Hi! New Dutch subscriber here. Planning on buying my first hammock and watching a lot of videos on hammocking! Your name came up as the to-go to source for instructions. So...storting here with the suspension options. Cheers for including metric system😁 Awesome juggling skills as well!

As a newcommer that wanted to buy from Dutchgear (because forums said I should) but ending up giving up because I don't understand what I'm ordering (Dutch, add pictures for orders!!!), Shug is an international treasure ! Thank you sir. Cheers from France.
@@shugemery hello shug, thanks for taking the time :) I get pictures when i browse for single products but when i go on the hammock page the customizations and suspension types are simple text in dropdown lists to select from. But now I know what they mean so thank you for that :)
I'm an avid tent camper but I've been looking into hammocks recently... Your videos are intuitive and entertaining thanks a lot, you've helped me a lot
Thank you for taking the time to go real basic for those of us with NO experience but the desire to try hammock hanging. Looking forward to further vids in this series.
Great video! Tip for anyone considering daisy chain webbing suspension: You can reduce weight 3 ways here. 1) Instead of the daisy chain being 100% of your suspension, considering using a tree hugger for the top half of your suspension that goes around the tree. Tree huggers are going to be much lighter as they aren't doubled up. You don't need the heavier daisy chain portion around the tree. 2) Consider lighter weight materials for your tree hugger and your daisy chain. You can get Dutchware Spider 1.5 webbing for your tree straps at 1.5 grams per foot and Dutchware Spider daisy chain straps at 4.89 grams per foot. For example, if I wanted a 14' daisy chain, I would instead get a pair of 7' spider 1.5 tree hugger and a pair of 7' spider daisy chain strap. You connect the daisy chain strap to the end of the tree strap via a larks head knot. Together this suspension would weigh 96 grams (3.4 oz)! This is as light or lighter than some poly/dyneema strap setups that rely on knots. 3) Replace the hardware pieces with 4x Amsteel soft shackles at 4 grams each. Use one for connecting the tree hugger end loop to the tree hugger strap and the other for connecting your hammock continuous loop to the desired part on the daisy chain. Hope this helps!
This will be valuable to new hangers. We are seeing more hangers on the AT and some without tree straps. A word about LNT and tree straps would be valuable in this series. Thanks for your videos.
Hey joker. Fell in love with your channel (and personality) about 3 or 4 years ago. Anyway, I was wondering what you thought about just making a daisy chain with some military paracord? I know it's a lot more than the J-Bend or Beckett Hitch, but just as an additional option for those "knot" proficient in what the mathematicians call "the science of topology," lol!
Hey Shug been wild camping for some years but have just purchased my first hammock. I appreciate your videos. They're super helpful. All done with a great sense of enthusiasm and humor. Many thanks. Mark
I’m doing 3 gift hammocks for a college friend for Christmas with some bargain Joanne fabric rip stop - because I wanted to keep cost very low I sent her a tutorial on Beckett hitch but also link to dutch daisy chain in case it makes her crazy annoyed. I use whoopie a on marlin spine hitch 99% of the time but now keep a CL on my hammocks to do a Beckett hitch in case I need to get closer to trees. Great video Shug!
I do car camping with a hammock and I like the ENO Atlas straps because they do not stretch at all and are quick and foolproof to adjust. I feel very secure using them.
Loved the video ... always good to help folks out with GOOD information! Not to mention it was might nice to see the camera toss in all it's glory again! Most excellent!
Love your videos Shug, Your original how-to vids taught me all about hammock backpacking. forget about the long trail!! Come on up to Maine and do the 100 mile wilderness!! Or the last 50miles of it. Great sauntering section of the 100MW
When I had my hammock I had the daisy chain ropes.. and I hated them. They were a pain in the butt. I heard that I needed a straight line when hanging . I have much to learn if I want to get a hammock sometime. I appreciate the video, thanks
I always learn something from your educational videos. I'd been hanging my straps dead center on the tree. Will try your way from now on, since your hangs always look so much more comfortable than mine.
Shug I have heard you say a million times where to have the webbing in relation to the biener or webbing when wraped around the tree, but it wasnt until this video that I coudl see why or really understand the physics behind all this. Maybe it was the upclose and personal with different types or that I could see the stretching of the threads or webbing that drove it home. Thank you for that. For the dummies out there that still dont get it: when the strap is pulling on the beiner your whole weight is beign placed on the beiner when it is wrapped around the tree the frictionof the tree and strap take most of the weight adn the biender is pulling on the strap for the rest of the weight. The same way horses were held to a hitching post in those old western movies.
I have watched about a dozen of your videos and I am very impressed. I have noticed a particular skill set of your's that doesn't involve Hammock Camping. What is your DAY job.
I'm excited to see the rest of this mini series! I've never used anything other than daisy chain, although I've made my own variations out of Spectra Cord, 3/8" webbing, Kevlar String, and Paracord. They work really well and are all definitely much lighter than the full Atlas Straps, but I want to see what else hammocking suspension is available.
depending on where you hang, there is a 1" minimum for your suspension. This is to keep the suspension from crushing into the cambium layer on the tree. LNT
Another good video. I'm currently trying to come up with a quick and easy way to attach webbing with cinch buckle or something similar to a CL on my hammock.....that way I can keep hammock and suspension separate. I'll be watching the rest of your series. Keep up the good work.
I have mule tape but never seem to use it as a suspension. Just don'y like the looks. I know...picky. I'm still a strap/marlin spike/toggle/ whoopie sling guy too.
ive been wanting to experiment with a knotted amsteel line, so instead of like a daisy chain its more a line of knots, now i imagine it could work with either a larks head on the continuous loop which you could thread over the line until you reach the knot you want to stop at and place it there or perhaps make it also work with perhaps a dutch whoopie hook or a titanium micro hook. i have my own home made daisy chain that i like to use because its long enough to also work as a structural ridgeline for the hammock aswell but ive been wanting to drop the weight without sacrificing the foolproof quality of a daisy chain, might not be as adjustable but it doesnt matter too much with structural ridge line. its quick and simple
Go for it. I do know amseel is a bit slippery and knots degrade amsteel strength by a fair amount but my Warbonnet hammocks have some amsteel with knots that have held. Though they do have some shrink wrap on them to help with slippage.
@@shugemery ya know what I had forgotten that amsteel doesn't play nice with knots but hell, experimenting is experimenting I'll just have to remember to cushion my fall.
I've been using something very similar to the Daisy Chain Webbing from Amazon and I am super happy with them. They are probably heavier than yours but tough as nails. . . Rallt Tree Hammock Straps is the name of the product. Still lovin' your videos Shug!

(snarls)
well yes there is that i suppose tbh but i have purchased quite a bit of hiking and camping kit this year so i thought it would have been ok..never mind i'll sort it for the new year
I'm still on daisy chains, and one thing I've found is I can usually put them on double duty to hang a light weight diamond tarp a few loops above my hammock.
Not badly. It's a sil-nylon tarp with a piece of webbing running length as a ridgeline. Since it all has some stretch to it, keeping the tarp higher up puts some good tension on it. Here's a pic, with my crappy underquilt (I currently have an order open with hammockgear for an incubator 20!): i.redd.it/s3w6klt12kcz.jpg
In my opinion the best kind of webbing for hammocking is covered dyneema because it is light and strong and doesn't stretch but still is easily knotable and the dyneema is protected from friction and UV-rays
Great videos, just started using a hammock so your videos have helped me a lot. I have a daisy chain strap but also bought two whoopie slings after watching your video on them. I use a toggle in the daisy chain strap and hook my whoopie sling to that. Just wondering if that is safe or should I use a regular tree strap and use the marlin spike and toggle. Also like hiking on the SHT, just haven't done any hammock camping yet.
Going to be in the Florida Keys for a few weeks and realized..why didn’t I bring my hammock...palm trees and a hammock...dang...any who great video..as usual🌴**🌴
omg... is that cam jams on your ridge at 2:40minw? If it's not, you just gave me a great idea either way.. that would be a lot easier to tie off my ridge line under my hammock.. dude... you are awesome
SHUGG HI! WHAT'S THE BEST / PERFECT SPREAD FOR YOUR HAMMOCK ! I'M PUTTING A CLOTHES LINE BACK UP IN MY MOMS BACKYARD. I KNOW THEY COME IN DIFFERENT LENGTHS. WORKING ON GETTING A LONGER ONE SOUNDS LIKE A 11' ER IS REALLY COMFORTABLE ? BUT JUST WONDERING WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD DISTANCE BETWEEN POLES! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! BE SAFE! HAVE FUN! GOD BLESS YOU & YOUR FAMILY ALWAYS! ENJOYED!
David Stillman I would be very careful hanging off clothesline poles unless you know for sure they will hold the weight in a hammock. But I like 15 to 17 feet.
Have you seen a setup using the daisy chain loops where the straps from each tree are connected in middle via carabiner or cinch strap and stretched tight. Then use that as tarp ridgeline and hang hammock from loops as normal. I was told about this but I picture the whole thing sagging too much ...
So when you get in the hammock, it sags. So when you talk about the "rule of thumb" 30 degree angle of the suspension, is that 30 degrees before you get into it or 30 degrees after you get into it? Thanks!
What about using a daisy chain on a stand that has a hook at the back where you have to put the strap through a fork guide? Would the fork help with the stress? What would the stress be like on a thin hook instead of a tree?
so i have a question for you, im going hiking in February because i love winter camping. im usually go in a tent but this year im taking my hammock, im going to try out the cocoon by snugpak. and ill bring a pad as well and my 20* quilt. im going on the ice age trail northern Wisconsin think ill be good?
I would love to get a hammock but I worry about ending up with a cheapie. I want a good one. So, what would be a good one? I want one that is going to stand the test of time
Ok Mr. Shug have seen all your videos already of all the channel many times... Shugmery's UA-cam follower I declare myself...NOW... I'm wanna know something: How many lbs. do you think it must be able to support or stand EACH suspension line of each side of the hmk to support a person of under 200 lbs. Because I bought 5mm polyester cord and it supports 800 lbs. (Single). Do you thing I can use it like that or you recommend me to double it so it support 1600 lbs. (minus the knot). THANKS Martin from Argentina by the way.
Shug, can you cover what to do when you’re hammock ridgeline is too loose or too tight. i.e. raise /lower the suspension on the tree or lengthen/shorten the suspension. I think that’s an area that confuses people and not a lot out there on it.
This is NOT criticism! Just a different perspective. Myself and I'd guess a LOT of other folks, watch your Humourous, Fun, Entertaining and Educational videos, but don't ever backpack. But I gotta say, all these camping videos you backpackers create, make me laugh every time the SCALE comes out. HAHAHA - I Motorcycle camp, and am somewhat concerned about bulk, but splitting ounces is NOWHERE on my radar. And it's just my guess, there are probably a lot of us non-backpackers that have never weighed their gear. I want easy, small, fast set up, less "Fiddly" :D -Cheers brother!
If a hammock comes without suspension and you don't want to spend $30 for a suspension system then buy 30' of webbing, cut in half, tie a simple loop on one end and feed around tree and through loop. At the loose end double up the webbing and make a double loop and hook 'biner through double loop. Secure other end of hammock the same way making sure that the distance between trees is what you desire. Before you put weight on hammock place a stick in double loop with 'biner, this will prevent the knot from becoming too tight. Perfect system for those ENO hammocks.
Another fine lecture there Mr Emery. I feel a bit of a heel to point out a blooper, but I think it needs to be done... soz. @1:55s you say, "the polyester, or some people call it a polypro strap" Polypro is short for polypropylene, it is cheaper and weaker (by some degree) than polyester. It stretches less than nylon, but more than polyester. I feel like such a nit-picky-nitwit now. I just don't want the Shug to feed the confusion. You da man for the straight dope!
shugemery - you can pick up cheapo polypro webbing at hardware stores. A lot of the low quality tiedown straps use it. You can use the stuff, but you need to check the load capacity. To be strong enough, it will be heavier than polyester. But it will be cheaper.
I have this strap on my Beetle Buckles...mix of dyneema and polypro.....dutchwaregear.com/dyneema-polypro-tree-straps.html Use them in my Nut Hut for hammock naps. Took them on a trip but did not like looking at them hanging at the end of y hammock. My eye kept going to them. So back to my all black polyester strap.
Hello again Mr. Shug... you suggested for me to ask you my question about hammocks ,on a hammock video so, here I am. Better yet it is not only a hammock question in a hammock video but a hammock suspension question in a hammock suspension video... here we go... first I will ask the simple question and then I will describe the situation. ( if you have already answered the questions in previous videos please feel free 2 just direct me to the videos if you want.) #1 what kind of rope Flash
Oops... I accidentally hit send way too early. #1 what kind of rope / cordage/ sewing thread or twine should I use? #2 what kind of rope / cordage does not stretch? #3 how and what kind of cordage should I use for hanging a hammock between too far points?Being lightweight and space conscious is not a concern. Here is my situation. My family and I rented a vacation house for the week and wanted to set up are hammocks in the backyard. There were plenty of trees in the back yard but they were quite a far distance apart. I went to Walmart and bought some Diamond braided poly- something a rather rope. Thinking I would be good to go. And I was wrong. It's stretched more then a snake's mouth eating a moose. I could not get it tight enough or it's not to sag and have your butt on the ground.
I would recommend straps.....dutchwaregear.com/product-category/hammock-gear/hammock-suspensions/ Straps protect the tree more and don't stretch.....dutchwaregear.com/product/cinch-buckle-complete-suspension/#cinch-buckle-and-amsteel-loops-pair
Hey, Shug! I'm a viewer since '08. Love your vids. Thought you should know, 468 grams = 1 lb and .5 ounces...not 5 ounces as you stated. Keep 'em coming!
Warbonnet hammocks suggest 12 to 18 inches higher...and that comes from the designer. Go higher than you think you might need to and go from there....higher, lower...until you find what you like.....ua-cam.com/video/-Cvj0ISjzl8/v-deo.html
so the whole weight issue is no issue for me when the gear use is multipurpose. meaning one stone many birds. (2) 15 feet webbing = 30 foot ladder + 4 rated beener endless possibility or 2 emergency harness's , 1 full body harness, 1 rigging system to raise / lower / carry a person.
I bought a Chinese Atlas strap knock off just to play with as a beginner. I used the last loop and it ripped straight through. My GF fell straight onto concrete. It was terrible. After looking closer at the straps the last loop wasn't structurally sewn but was indistinguishable from the others otherwise. It really should have been left un-sewn or sewn together, not in a false loop.
G'day Shug, Yay Team ! That was interesting... I have a Hammock, but it lives permanently strung between two Posts, accross a corner of the Verhanda of the Hut I live in...; perfectly situated to watch the Windmill & Solar Panels while drinking a Beer in the afternoon. Segue Warning... Two days ago I was able to video a "Walla-Battle", ie a pair of fully-grown Swamp Wallabies having a serious fight...; during the first 3 minute "Round" I was between 25 &15 yards, so it's not a bad view..., and I was 50 - 75 yds off during the second Round...which went another 4 minuets... If you want to be amazed by some natural strength, skill, stamina, and some savagery...; then feel free to either backtrack me to my Vid's scroll, or title-search YT for "Duelling Swamp Wallabies...; Marsupial Martial Arts !". Both the Combatants were essentially unhurt, and I've also (since) posted videos of their (separate) visits to share my food. I think you'll be interested by how polite and timid they are when dealing with me, compared to how explosively-violent they can be whenever they feel like fighting among themselves. Enjoy... Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !

I'm still on daisy chains, and one thing I've found is I can usually put them on double duty to hang a light weight diamond tarp a few loops above my hammock.
Does your tarp not sag?
Not badly. It's a sil-nylon tarp with a piece of webbing running length as a ridgeline. Since it all has some stretch to it, keeping the tarp higher up puts some good tension on it.
Here's a pic, with my crappy underquilt (I currently have an order open with hammockgear for an incubator 20!):

Looks good!
Hey there Shugedy shug shug shug. Great Video feller !
Whoooooo Buddy....
In my opinion the best kind of webbing for hammocking is covered dyneema because it is light and strong and doesn't stretch but still is easily knotable and the dyneema is protected from friction and UV-rays
Not sure there is a BEST....but there is a preference to each person.
shugemery Sure, that's why I wrote "in my opinion", but the polyester covered dyneema has a lot going for it.
Always good to double check your rigging.
Just don't hang right off the toggle. Hope you get to the trail.
Going to be in the Florida Keys for a few weeks and realized..why didn’t I bring my hammock...palm trees and a hammock...dang...any who great video..as usual🌴**🌴
Watch for falling coconuts and have fun!
omg... is that cam jams on your ridge at 2:40minw? If it's not, you just gave me a great idea either way.. that would be a lot easier to tie off my ridge line under my hammock.. dude... you are awesome
by the way.. I cut one of my straps in... ummmm... less than half... and tied mule tape to it. makes it lighter and is still easy on the trees.
That is just some shock cord and a small biner.
well, it still gave me a good idea for my ridge line inside that tarp. Thanks for triggering the idea
ENJOYED!
David Stillman
I would be very careful hanging off clothesline poles unless you know for sure they will hold the weight in a hammock.
Not something I have done...or would do.
So when you get in the hammock, it sags. So when you talk about the "rule of thumb" 30 degree angle of the suspension, is that 30 degrees before you get into it or 30 degrees after you get into it?
Thanks!
About 30º before I get in. More or less. Just a starting point.
Thanks for the info Shug!
Y'elcome and thanks.
What about using a daisy chain on a stand that has a hook at the back where you have to put the strap through a fork guide? Would the fork help with the stress? What would the stress be like on a thin hook instead of a tree?
C0deH0wler
I think you would be fine. But I have really never done that so I am just speculating. Never know until you try.
Try try fall on ya butt :P
so i have a question for you, im going hiking in February because i love winter camping. im usually go in a tent but this year im taking my hammock, im going to try out the cocoon by snugpak. and ill bring a pad as well and my 20* quilt. im going on the ice age trail northern Wisconsin think ill be good?
You should be OK. But you'll know for sure out there. Test before you go!
I'm going to try to get out there be for hand. Ever hike that trail before?
Thank you very much. I extremely appreciate it.
Y'elcome and have a right good trip.
I would love to get a hammock but I worry about ending up with a cheapie. I want a good one. So, what would be a good one? I want one that is going to stand the test of time

You have great information on hammocks, however, security in sector 7 may well be questionable :) THANKS
Locked down tightly!

Thanks Mr. SHUGMERY though...
Liked the music .whooo budy.
I bow here.
Shug, can you cover what to do when you’re hammock ridgeline is too loose or too tight. i.e. raise /lower the suspension on the tree or lengthen/shorten the suspension.
I think that’s an area that confuses people and not a lot out there on it.
North Country Outdoor Guys
Check the very end of this video there is a link that comes up to my Ridgeline video. That may give you some clarity.
That is why I prefer an adjustable RL much like a whoopie sling
lower it on tree some. May help
I want easy, small, fast set up, less "Fiddly" :D
-Cheers brother!
For all that don't count grams and ounces there are Many that do and they make sure to let me know that. So I do it when I can.
There ya' go. If it works then right good!
This is very similar to how I do it.My problem has become that i need as much as 25' just to get around the trees!Getting too heavy.
Another fine lecture there Mr Emery. I feel a bit of a heel to point out a blooper, but I think it needs to be done... soz.
@1:55s you say, "the polyester, or some people call it a polypro strap"
Polypro is short for polypropylene, it is cheaper and weaker (by some degree) than polyester. It stretches less than nylon, but more than polyester.
I feel like such a nit-picky-nitwit now.
I just don't want the Shug to feed the confusion. You da man for the straight dope!
Thanks. Not even sure anyone sells a polypro strap. Maybe though. A lot spews out of my mouth...bound to be mistakes!
shugemery - you can pick up cheapo polypro webbing at hardware stores. A lot of the low quality tiedown straps use it. You can use the stuff, but you need to check the load capacity. To be strong enough, it will be heavier than polyester. But it will be cheaper.
I think Hickery uses that. He likes yellow so he can see it and not forget it.
Yella-strap!... hangin' on a tree,
Yella-strap!... won't get lost too easily.
I have this strap on my Beetle Buckles...mix of dyneema and polypro.....dutchwaregear.com/dyneema-polypro-tree-straps.html
Use them in my Nut Hut for hammock naps.
I would recommend straps.....dutchwaregear.com/product-category/hammock-gear/hammock-suspensions/
Straps protect the tree more and don't stretch.....dutchwaregear.com/product/cinch-buckle-complete-suspension/#cinch-buckle-and-amsteel-loops-pair
I rarely hammock camp anymore but still interesting
Hey, Shug! I'm a viewer since '08. Love your vids. Thought you should know, 468 grams = 1 lb and .5 ounces...not 5 ounces as you stated. Keep 'em coming!
Yeah......I am no math quant.
Numbers perplex me......
Folks..take heed....always double check my math....!
How is it perfect if your feet are above your head?!
It slides me back to my sweet spot. Always found it the way to go.
@shugemery ok thanks Shug, I'll have to give it a try 😎
Warbonnet hammocks suggest 12 to 18 inches higher...and that comes from the designer. Go higher than you think you might need to and go from there....higher, lower...until you find what you like.....ua-cam.com/video/-Cvj0ISjzl8/v-deo.html
I used to use the 'Charles Atlas' straps, but it was too much of a workout!
Set you up for that one!
Awesome!
👍
it was simple for me to choose a system. it had to be climbing rated no sense on caring extra gear that inst rated.
so the whole weight issue is no issue for me when the gear use is multipurpose. meaning one stone many birds. (2) 15 feet webbing = 30 foot ladder + 4 rated beener endless possibility or 2 emergency harness's , 1 full body harness, 1 rigging system to raise / lower / carry a person.
Sounds beefy and strong for you.
What about the hammock.
You made it yourself ?
Maybe a video about making one ?
If I ever make another I may.
Search making hammocks here on You Tube, many tutorials.
I used these directions....tothewoods.net/HomemadeHammock.html
Is this green bean back from the dead? I thought green bean bit the dust!
Chris Jordan
That is Greenbean the new 2.0. I made that hammock right after I destroyed the original Greenbean.
Sad .. but yes even hammocks eventually die :(
Well Mr Shug, you're finally getting prolific with producing videos again. Sometimes you just need a break from the internet.
No time to camp but time for this. Squeezing it in.
lol! When you gonna cut that dead tree?
steve sumrall
Next week.
I'm in the tree business down here in Louisiana
steve sumrall
I got a local tree guy coming. Tree died quite a while ago.
Strangled, I betcha!
It really should have been left un-sewn or sewn together, not in a false loop.
justsayin
Could go through the second loop. We shall see.
well explained shug
Thankee.
I put my hammock daisy chain straps around the tree today and my girlfriend tripped out. She been reading some Shades of Grey novel.
Good Times!!!! Dual use.....
My suspension is different every time. I just bring two pieces of 3/4" tubular webbing and improvise every time.
There ya' go. I'm a whoopie sling user.
WOOO BUDDY
Aye!
How the HECK, do you not have snow Shug???
Danielle Patenaude
Soon I suppose. Warm spell today.
Polypro is polypropylene, it’s a different plastic from polyester.
Slang. I thought I said poly. Maybe not as I say a lot.
shugemery 1:57 ish. Misspeaking can happen!
👍👍👍👍👍
I thank ya'.
wOOOO Buddy.
Yessir!
I am always hanging my hammock too high and then can't get out...
Swing low!
No need for a drone to get the ariel shots. Just chuck the camera in the air.

Thanks Shug! I am loosing my hair...

Rogaine.
G'day Shug,
Yay Team !
Enjoy...
Have a good one,
;-p
Ciao !
We sure lack a good Wallabie fight here in the States!
Did you know you have a hashtag on instagram???
#shugemery
Haaa....I don't even have instagram!
Isn't this a video from several years ago? Even greenbean is still alive here
bliblablublublublu
Nope… I just did this video today. That is my new green being 2.0 have that hammock for a while. You’re mistaking this video for my Ridgeline video from a year or so ago.
Thanks for the correction, Shug! Happy to see new videos of yours!
i like how you suspend them balls
Motivate the material. Thanks.
Daisy chain webbing. Had me worried for a moment. Thought this was gonna be about gay spiders.
Your a great teacher! Thanks
I do enjoy teaching folks. Had good teachers help me.
