After watching your videos I've recently picked up singing while camping. My wife and I just did a few multi-day trips on the AT and she asked, "What the heck are you doing?" "I'm singing. Like Shug! He's hilarious!" "He sure thinks he is", she responded flatly. While she may not be impressed, I am. Keep up the good work.
It's been a few years since I used the Marlin-Spike hitch... such a simple thing, but I had to come back and watch again because the old brain just wouldn't pull it out of the archives! 👍 Thanks for everything you've taught us over the years Shug!
I have a potentially stupid question... with the Marlin Spike and toggle you could hook your continuous loop from your hammock right on the knot (not the toggle!), no? Why bother with the whoopee sling then, and not just use webbing long enough for your hanging needs? Thanks for the videos Shug! They've helped out this noobie quite a bit.
I just did that and di it when I have a short hang. On my foot end. See it in this video at 7:13 in......ua-cam.com/video/nWFgHNwnG-M/v-deo.html I prefer whoopies over webbing. Just a personal preference. Webbing in the deep winter though. Easier with gloves on.
Thanks for this mate, I know it's old but I'm only just starting to use whoopies and I always have way too much slack and a short hang. this way I can tie the marlin spike riiiiiiiiight up to the post / tree 🌲
Just got back from an overnighter with friends, took out Dutch's new speedhook system. I'm convinced it will replace whoopie slings, saved myself 40 grams of weight and it can't be simpler. Speed Hook
Thank you that solved a problem no one else's explanation was making clear to me! (on the KNOT, *not* on the TOGGLE lolol) This'll save me much aggravation!
Shug, I'm swapping my ENO continuous loop and biner with a whoopie sling. My plan is to lark's head the fixed loop end of the whoopie sling through the ENO channel (passing through channel twice), as shown in various youtube videos. My question: if I use the marlin spike hitch with a toggle on the adjustable end of the whoopie sling, what should I use for a water break? I don't want to use a shoelace, but I also don't want to get wet. Should I skip the MSH and toggle in this scenario and instead use a Dutch biner to connect the whoopie sling to the tree strap, where the Dutch biner would also serve as my water break? Or is there a more elegant solution for a water break for those of us who like to hack our ENO hammocks with a whoopie sling?
Maybe the answer lies here? www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php/9420-Drip-Rings-and-Marlinspike-Hitch "we hook the suspension loop underneath the hitch and toogle. This pushes the hitch and the toogle underneath the webbing and the suspension line and forms a drip spout for the water to run down and drip off" In practice, does this work? I don't have the equipment yet to try this out with a cup of water.
All you have to do is reach down and get a stick and put it through the loop. Since the whoopee sling hangs on the knot and not on the toggle a stick will do just fine. And you don't have to pack it in with yo.
Say, is it possible to use a karabiner instead of the toggle and then attach the hammock to that karabiner? If not, would a clove hitch or other knot allow to do this?
shugemery wow, i though my smart alack comment would likely go unnoticed. By the way thanks for all the info on your channel. Been camping since I was a kid but new to hammocking. I like it so far but haven't had the opportunity to venture much farther than the garage.
As I develop my hammock system I'm learning what works with my budget I'm starting with a Winner Outfitters hammock so I'm planning to keep the loops, get 2 12-foot straps, put the marlin spike hitch in the strap and hang the continuous loop to the hitch (not the toggle).
Have you ever replaced your toggle with a carabiner? No toggle worries, no slippage.. attach biner to loop instead of inserting toggle and run whoopie from biner to hammock.. Just wondering if youve ever tried it out that way? I wanted to try it to see lol
I wonder what is the advantage of Marlin spike + toggle vs Becket hitch (used with conjunction with whoopie slings)? You prefer that and i wonder why: more hardware, danger of hanging it wrong (on the toggle).
Oldcoinsandstuff1 I have some. Not used them since I went to hammocks. I was looking for a more comfortable way to have breakfast whilst laying in the sleeping bag. Also...I like sitting up to put on my boots.
What is a good material and source for the tree straps if I am using the Marlin Spike knot? I am using 1500lb Polyester from Ripstop by the Yard and it's great for buckles but doesn't take a knot very well.
I had to watch this knot tutorial after your last July 12, 2019 video on the tarp pitch, and I just noticed the "Madam Mystic, Palm Reader" sign at 3:20! Pretty cool! Was it for Halloween?
Shugemery thanks for the demo! Question: what does the whoopie sling look like on the other end? Do you use a dutch hook to clip to the hammock continuous loop?
I used the toggles for awhile after seeing the How-To series, then switched to the Dutch Buckles. Not as easy to adjust, but I won't loose them! So what do you do for deep winter?
Good timing i am just sorting it out for myself this morning for my first hang. I think i am going to try a carabina as the toggle into a marlin spike hitch. Then slippery hitch after the MSH to be sure not to slip. I am using a knotted webbing like (think atlas strap) from my hammock so then just clip into the biner then adjustment and clip on is easy. If it doesnt work i an just use the biner in the end of the webbing straps :)
I got a question that hopfully somone could answer. Instead of putting a stick threw the loop could you just stick a caribiner threw their? And if so how much weight could be held? Im 280. Could that hold 400 pounds?
NOT on the toggle... got it. So.. why not? I am thinking about getting a hammock again.. and getting the buckles from Dutch. My first hammock I was using the carabiner and the knot on the rope.. but it was a major pain in the butt. NOT on the toggle.. >_o Thanks for the video

Why can't the loop be on the toggle if the toggle is strong and the knot is tight? I think this knot was originally a rope worker's knot used to put a spike in a line so you could have a handle to pull hard on the line. (Animated knots shows it being used to make a ladder from two ropes and a bunch of dowels, so you actually stand on the "spikes".) I try to put the loop on the knot mostly because I just use any old stick I find on the ground that doesn't look too rotten.
I think it's mostly because the toggles made for this purpose are made to be as lightweight as possible, so having the weight further out may cause it to fold in on itself. It would also be more slippery than on the knot(which would keep the knot tight), not sure if that would have any real world effect though.
Do the tree's ever get angry with you for using them as a hammock support device? Thankee for a yet another fantastic video! I'm off for some French fried pertators and some potted meat product, emmm hymmm...

***** Since I'm not a fan of the Marlin Spike I came up with my own solution. You may have seen it on the www.Hammockforums.net The Line Locker! Being a rock climber I don't like bunching up my webbing. You loose tensile strength doing that. The Line Locker is used in climbing and an off shoot sport Slacklining. My Line Locker is attached to my whoopiesling, (acting as a stopper so I can't pull out the loop). It is made of two links of chain welded at 90° of one another. Let me know what you think. goo.gl/ZHbtQi
Tried it out last weekend at our Fellowship of the Woods Rendezvous. Fantastic results. No more fiddle farting around with atlas straps for me. Got some 1.5 inch straps from AHE and cut an old crossbow bolt for the toggles. Now I need to find the right type of nylon to make my own 11 foot hammock that will hold my fat ass. the ENO Doublenest just isn't long enough for my total comfort.

Bet some body will still hook it to the toggle instead of the knot.
Mike Eddleman They always do.....kaboom.

Laochri That works for you..cool. I am quicker with the Marlinspike and have not had a strap problem or snap yet. Carry forth.
Was it the knot or the toggle? He didn't make himself to clear. Oh well. whoooo buddy
So basically the Marlin spike hitch is just a slipknot
with a stick or toggle in it.
Tried it out last weekend at our Fellowship of the Woods Rendezvous. Fantastic results. No more fiddle farting around with atlas straps for me. Got some 1.5 inch straps from AHE and cut an old crossbow bolt for the toggles. Now I need to find the right type of nylon to make my own 11 foot hammock that will hold my fat ass. the ENO Doublenest just isn't long enough for my total comfort.
uhmmm-hummm, so yer sayin' that I put my whoopee slang in that there toggle? That's how we did it up the nervous hospital.
I reckon.
Ffs... I got it !!!!!
