    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 4 роки тому

      For advanced use, go with UCRs instead, where milking yer berry is even more important. On an unmilked whoopie sling you might slip a little but it’ll tighten up of itself. On a UCR, not so much.

    I started into hammocks because of the simplicity. Bought a length of ripstop from ripstopbytheroll, seamed, gathered the end with paracord and hit the trail. (OK I hit my back yard first). From there of course you learn about tarps, tree straps, quilts, bug nets, and much, much more. So I was surprised to hear you say recently that hammocks are complicated. But as usual you are right. They are just so flexible there are all kinds of things you can do to improve things. I think that's what
    really draws me to hammock camping. There are just so many things you can try and many are easy and cheap. I just camped with the boyscout in 26 degree weather in gear that cost me about 160 bucks, a bit of DIY time and a few tricks I learned on youtube. (I couldn't do it without my coat zipped around my foot box, courtesy of the Shug).

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  7 років тому +1

      I say it is complicated as it seems so to many and want them to know what they are getting into. I always found it intuitive and fun.

    Good explanation! I have to say, you were the inspiration to get into hammock camping and whoopie slings as well, even making them myself, which wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be! On another note, I have to admit, I've never been to Dutch's website until the whole chameleon phenomenon, and what caught my attention was the 0° incubator, now I can't remember, and to busy lollygagging to search your vast library of videos, but do you have/used the incubator?

      Hang your continuous loop directly to the Marlin Spike and bypass the whoopie all together, in that instance. The continuous loop allows additional options vs. direct connecting the whoopie to the hammock.

    Is it okay to use 2mm, 1/16 uhmwpe dyneema for a whoopie sling ? I'm 95kg, 209lbs. That's only 20% of the mbs. If the hang angle is 30°, the force should not exceed that right ?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  9 місяців тому

      Yes. If you pull the whoopies to tight straight out it is very hard to loosen. They need some slack in the line thus the 30º suspension angle of the hammock suspension.
      Is you hammock suspension straight out? Do you have a ridgeline on your hammock?

    On your tree strap, couldn't you just thread the end of the strap through the strap loop instead of using a carabineer? Wouldn't that eliminate more hardware/weight? Is the convenience of the carabineer really worth it?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  7 років тому

      Of course you can. I like the speed of a biner and sometimes need to move the strap up or down the tree past a limb...biner makes it easier. For me...worth the 22 grams....shop.whoopieslings.com/Nano-22-Carabiner-by-CAMP-USA-Nano-22.htm

    I prefer straps to suspend the hammock and then a separate whoopie sling acting as a ridgeline between each end of the hammock. I don't think a whoopie sling on its own is safe enough to suspend the weight of the whole system.
    With the whoopie sling only deciding the hang of the hammock, if that fails then the hammock will still be suspended by the straps tied to trees etc.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  2 роки тому +1

      So many options for suspension which is nice. I've never had a whoopee fail on since hanging since 2007. That amsteel is strong. Replace them every few seasons. I have had a tree strap break though. Though I do use straps in Winter here in Minnesota as it makes having a bit easier with gloves in.

    I've got two 6 ft. whoopie slings that I carry with me, although I don't actually use them very much any more. It's kind of a security thing, that I still carry them, if I can't find two trees close enough. My suspension system now consists of mostly two 15 ft. 1inch webbings. Those don't seem to tangle and is quick to use. I use a marline spike knot and an easy release truckers knot on the other end for adjustments. I'm a believer in, the less hardware to keep up with, the better. I tend to loose things. Simplicity is essential to me. Once I learned how to use the easy release truckers knot, I seem to always use it. All it is, is a loop and a bit. Quick and easy. I torque it up and my hammock ridge line keeps my hammock at the right sag.

    It's funny, I opted for a whoopie sling when I bought my hammock. I saw a lot of videos on using the becket hitch to tie your suspension to your tree huggers. Doesn't work so well with a whoopie sling (unless you don't need to make any adjustments after you hang it). I just received a couple of titanium toggles in the mail today. Marlin spikes will be the way I go!

    Great video! I got lost, tho, trying to figure out why one would call a part of a rope sling a "berry". A quick google search showed me the error of my ways, as it is a "bury". (Color my face red! Curse those homophones!)
    A more serious newbie question: most hammock straps seem to be 10' - 12' in length. Why would a whoopie sling be only 6' long, please? Is there something about Dyneema (or whichever material) that calls for this shorter length?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  2 роки тому +1

      Whoopi’s extend to a longer length. A 6 footer will extend to 10 feet give or take. 6 foot is thewhoopie at its shortest.

      I have cynch buckles attached directly to my continuous loop. The tree strap goes directly to the buckle with no other hardware. It's simpler and allows fairly short distances but it means my straps are longer to allow for trees too far apart. But as I really don't like hanging on a long line I'm good with limiting balance.

    • @dannyh9010
      @dannyh9010 7 років тому +1

      I'm with Shug; I have 8" continuous loops on the end of my hammock. That way for a very short hang, I can forego the whoopee slings and put the loop directly on my tree strap. I've had to do that a few times.
