    Hey Shug , I’m from South Australia and I can’t thankyou enough for teaching me about hammocks , I’ve made my own continuous loops , whoopsie slings and adjustable structural ridge line and gone from a novice to a self confessed pro.

      Righto and fair dinkum~~ Does anyone truly say fair dinkum down your way? Consider yourself a splicer/hammocker. Was in Australia back in the early 1990s. Loved it. Never got to camp though.

      @@shugemery Yes, fair dinkum does get said though seldom nowadays compared to culture in the 90s, but the true meaning of the phrase is perhaps lost to most who use it. Thanks for your excellent videos, Shug. Much appreciated!

    I started into hammocks because of the simplicity. Bought a length of ripstop from ripstopbytheroll, seamed, gathered the end with paracord and hit the trail. (OK I hit my back yard first). From there of course you learn about tarps, tree straps, quilts, bug nets, and much, much more. So I was surprised to hear you say recently that hammocks are complicated. But as usual you are right. They are just so flexible there are all kinds of things you can do to improve things. I think that's what
    really draws me to hammock camping. There are just so many things you can try and many are easy and cheap. I just camped with the boyscout in 26 degree weather in gear that cost me about 160 bucks, a bit of DIY time and a few tricks I learned on youtube. (I couldn't do it without my coat zipped around my foot box, courtesy of the Shug).

    • @shugemery

      I say it is complicated as it seems so to many and want them to know what they are getting into. I always found it intuitive and fun.

    I just got myself a pair of whoopie slings as my experiments with hanging the hammock direct to the daisy-chain tree huggers revealed the limitations of having regularly-spaced fixed anchor points and I wanted something that I could use for fine-tuning the hang. Thank you *so* much for explaining what the beads on my whoopie slings are for - it seemed blindingly obvious once you pointed it out, but I had no bloody idea.
    Great watching the variety of ways you can adapt the hang with a combination of straps and whoopie slings. I'm hoping that with 2 daisy chain straps and 2 whoopie slings, I should be able to adapt to any variations in the spacing and diameter of trees where I plan to hang my hammock.

    Nice video! Great info. I ran my static end of my whoopie sling through my end channel to remove one component. Otherwise it's your same setup. I use Dutch buckles and am not pleased. Fell on my tush because they were apparently upside down. Grr. Almost went to a Marlin Spike Hitch that time to get it done. Thinking of getting the new Beatle Clips. Liked the idea of tying the tail end as a redundant water break. So many more comments but I'll end there. Love your stuff. Thanks Shug!

    I've got two 6 ft. whoopie slings that I carry with me, although I don't actually use them very much any more. It's kind of a security thing, that I still carry them, if I can't find two trees close enough. My suspension system now consists of mostly two 15 ft. 1inch webbings. Those don't seem to tangle and is quick to use. I use a marline spike knot and an easy release truckers knot on the other end for adjustments. I'm a believer in, the less hardware to keep up with, the better. I tend to loose things. Simplicity is essential to me. Once I learned how to use the easy release truckers knot, I seem to always use it. All it is, is a loop and a bit. Quick and easy. I torque it up and my hammock ridge line keeps my hammock at the right sag.

      Hang your continuous loop directly to the Marlin Spike and bypass the whoopie all together, in that instance. The continuous loop allows additional options vs. direct connecting the whoopie to the hammock.

      I see. Not because the cold affects the whoopie slings, but that they are fiddly with thick gloves. Thank you for answering that, and thank you for sharing your wisdom in these videos. You make them fun to watch too.

    I watch many of your videos. Love them all, but you out did yourself in this video. This was a whoopie sling tour de force. If they had an award for whoopie sling descriptions, you'd be pinning it to some strange part of your clothing right now. Just kidding! You always brighten the day.

    Hey, Shug. I find that once I get my hammock up I have a hard time adjusting my whoopie sling (like it creates to much pressure and it's locked in already). I have to grab the end of my hammock and pull it toward the sling to make adjustment, where I looks like you're sliding yours up and down no problem. Wonder if I'm doing things wrong? PS: Thanks so much for taking the time to help us new hammockers out.

      Yes...either empty your hammock so it is lighter or grab end of hammock like your doing.

    Shug my hammock has webbing through the end and was thinking of putting my whoopie though instead.to lighten the load.do you think doing that would put pressure on the stitching and cut through or doing like you're done binding the end then use the loop of whoopie to put on like you have.great vid as always have a wonderful Christmas and a jolly new year cheers shug

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 4 роки тому

      For advanced use, go with UCRs instead, where milking yer berry is even more important. On an unmilked whoopie sling you might slip a little but it’ll tighten up of itself. On a UCR, not so much.

    Greetings and salutations to everybody in sector 7. I upgraded my suspension system last week to a pair of DD tree huggers and a pair of DD whoopie slings. I already had the light weight beeners.
    After much fiddling around Ive now set up my suspension system the following way: tree hugger goes around the tree trunk according to its diameter, ends with a marlin spike hitch. Then I fed my fixed loop directly into where I used to have my continuous loop, and fed the whoopie sling through the fixed loop. Now all I do is attach the adjustable loop onto the hitch, not the toggle. So I have no need for beeners and no continuous loop.
    It wont rain again where Im at until winter so I wont need a metallic rain breaker. I thus have less stuff to carry, less to attach and change I just attach my whoopie sling to the tree hugger and Im good to go.

    Hey Shug! I have the Becket 1 inch, 15ft straps from Warbonnet. I am thinking of using a marlin hitch from these straps to a whoopie sling to the continual loops. I noticed you prefer to use a polyester strap for your marlin hitch. Is there a reason you don’t use the dyneema becket straps?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 роки тому

      I have just not need the dyneema one as I have a lot of poly straps. That's all.....

    Ok so when you milk your berry is there a chance that the Whoopie Sling could still move out of place depending on how heavy you are and how much you move on the Hammock?

      Not if the bury is correct length....6 to 10 inches.

    I just received my first whoopi slings. Is it possible to have them too tight! I had some trouble loosening my line. Or, maybe a technique thing?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  11 місяців тому

      Yes. If you pull the whoopies to tight straight out it is very hard to loosen. They need some slack in the line thus the 30º suspension angle of the hammock suspension.
      Is you hammock suspension straight out? Do you have a ridgeline on your hammock?
