nice clear vid thx, its like a morning juice power drink, just throw in the blender some dyneema, titanium, dutch, webbing, toggles, ripstop and add shug to taste. breakfast done :)
I started into hammocks because of the simplicity. Bought a length of ripstop from ripstopbytheroll, seamed, gathered the end with paracord and hit the trail. (OK I hit my back yard first). From there of course you learn about tarps, tree straps, quilts, bug nets, and much, much more. So I was surprised to hear you say recently that hammocks are complicated. But as usual you are right. They are just so flexible there are all kinds of things you can do to improve things. I think that's what really draws me to hammock camping. There are just so many things you can try and many are easy and cheap. I just camped with the boyscout in 26 degree weather in gear that cost me about 160 bucks, a bit of DIY time and a few tricks I learned on youtube. (I couldn't do it without my coat zipped around my foot box, courtesy of the Shug).
Who every thought that hammock camping would be so complicated. It's going to take a week just to learn the terminology. I told my wife I would need to milk my berry, and she told me I would be sleeping on the couch for now on.

Hey Shug! I have been watching your channel for years and this Christmas we were gifted our first hammock! I immediately thought of you and your channel when we opened it. I can't wait to give it a go in a couple weeks. thanks for this great info! here in Texas it shouldn't be terribly cold and hopefully we won't need all the down you need. :) thanks for being so inspiring to just get out there and do it.
Thanks for the info, extremely helpful as always! Also, I really liked the look of the bug-net you had hanging with that orange hammock outside. Can you give some details about that?
Hey Shug , I’m from South Australia and I can’t thankyou enough for teaching me about hammocks , I’ve made my own continuous loops , whoopsie slings and adjustable structural ridge line and gone from a novice to a self confessed pro.
Righto and fair dinkum~~ Does anyone truly say fair dinkum down your way? Consider yourself a splicer/hammocker. Was in Australia back in the early 1990s. Loved it. Never got to camp though.
@@shugemery Yes, fair dinkum does get said though seldom nowadays compared to culture in the 90s, but the true meaning of the phrase is perhaps lost to most who use it. Thanks for your excellent videos, Shug. Much appreciated!
This video is so delightful and overwhelmingly informative that I can't help but saying "whoopie sling" multiple times out loud while laughing to myself.
In another video, I think Shug you said that you usually take straps/buckles in real cold conditions. Is that right ? Are full length straps better when it is cold ?
I see. Not because the cold affects the whoopie slings, but that they are fiddly with thick gloves. Thank you for answering that, and thank you for sharing your wisdom in these videos. You make them fun to watch too.
Hey shug, Maybe a strange question? But do you know who that is, that painting in the background, the gentleman with the pipe on his mouth. that's Dorus Rijkers. from Den Helder, the Netherlands 1847-1928
This video was so helpful. I watched it before buying whoopie slings, after, and after landing on my derrière. Each time I learned something new or understood with more clarity. So well done!
Very good info.. I'm testing the whoopies for the first time for weight savings. The only minor problem is that you loose about 2 feet for hanging on trees close together compared to the cinch buckle/straps setup.
Hang your continuous loop directly to the Marlin Spike and bypass the whoopie all together, in that instance. The continuous loop allows additional options vs. direct connecting the whoopie to the hammock.
Is it okay to use 2mm, 1/16 uhmwpe dyneema for a whoopie sling ? I'm 95kg, 209lbs. That's only 20% of the mbs. If the hang angle is 30°, the force should not exceed that right ?
QUESTION; your preferred drip line? You mention the Dutchman.....if you were to recommend your all time favorite, most successful, drip line set up, what would it be?
7:30 AM EST8/18/19 Links won't work ?? I'll come back to see if it's just a fluke. Just Letting you know because it all supports your channel.....great video. Nice them being premade now, never knew what they were called. Easier than a spike' n needle fishing the line through.

Yes. If you pull the whoopies to tight straight out it is very hard to loosen. They need some slack in the line thus the 30º suspension angle of the hammock suspension. Is you hammock suspension straight out? Do you have a ridgeline on your hammock?
Nice video! Great info. I ran my static end of my whoopie sling through my end channel to remove one component. Otherwise it's your same setup. I use Dutch buckles and am not pleased. Fell on my tush because they were apparently upside down. Grr. Almost went to a Marlin Spike Hitch that time to get it done. Thinking of getting the new Beatle Clips. Liked the idea of tying the tail end as a redundant water break. So many more comments but I'll end there. Love your stuff. Thanks Shug!
It was funny and a bit embarrassing because I'd talked up my nifty new suspension to a guy using spare rope and Harbor Freight ratchet straps. Only thing wounded was my pride. Hehe. Still not thrilled there is a magical up and down unlisted on the product.
On your tree strap, couldn't you just thread the end of the strap through the strap loop instead of using a carabineer? Wouldn't that eliminate more hardware/weight? Is the convenience of the carabineer really worth it?
Of course you can. I like the speed of a biner and sometimes need to move the strap up or down the tree past a limb...biner makes it easier. For me...worth the 22 grams....shop.whoopieslings.com/Nano-22-Carabiner-by-CAMP-USA-Nano-22.htm

My webbing is showing signs of wear. I think it melted while in the marlin spike hitch once. Any advice on buying replacement webbing at a hardware store?
Pretty sure the whoopie hook needs to be vertically oriented to preform as a water break. Tested it last night in light rain. The continuous loop felt wet on the side where the hook was horizontal.. Hammock was still dry though!
Shug my hammock has webbing through the end and was thinking of putting my whoopie though instead.to lighten the load.do you think doing that would put pressure on the stitching and cut through or doing like you're done binding the end then use the loop of whoopie to put on like you have.great vid as always have a wonderful Christmas and a jolly new year cheers shug
Thanks, Shug. I thought this going to be more basic stuff for Noobs, but I actually learned a bit. (Wait, does that make me still a noob??) Always happy to learn from the master lollygagger.
I prefer straps to suspend the hammock and then a separate whoopie sling acting as a ridgeline between each end of the hammock. I don't think a whoopie sling on its own is safe enough to suspend the weight of the whole system. With the whoopie sling only deciding the hang of the hammock, if that fails then the hammock will still be suspended by the straps tied to trees etc.
So many options for suspension which is nice. I've never had a whoopee fail on since hanging since 2007. That amsteel is strong. Replace them every few seasons. I have had a tree strap break though. Though I do use straps in Winter here in Minnesota as it makes having a bit easier with gloves in.
Do you think it is OK to use a larks head to attach the whoopie Sling to the continual loop? I just started hammock camping and my hammock already has a continual loop and I would rather not add any hardware.
I've got two 6 ft. whoopie slings that I carry with me, although I don't actually use them very much any more. It's kind of a security thing, that I still carry them, if I can't find two trees close enough. My suspension system now consists of mostly two 15 ft. 1inch webbings. Those don't seem to tangle and is quick to use. I use a marline spike knot and an easy release truckers knot on the other end for adjustments. I'm a believer in, the less hardware to keep up with, the better. I tend to loose things. Simplicity is essential to me. Once I learned how to use the easy release truckers knot, I seem to always use it. All it is, is a loop and a bit. Quick and easy. I torque it up and my hammock ridge line keeps my hammock at the right sag.
I find a toggle easier to tie in and pull out. Check these out. Easy peasy.....Dutch Buckle for whoopies....dutchwaregear.com/dutch-buckle-complete-suspension.html dutchwaregear.com/the-dutch-buckle.html
Completely off topic, but my girl and I are going to the Snowbird Extravaganza tomorrow! I'm not sure when we'll get there, but hopefully we won't miss you performing!
I'm sorry I wasn't able to make it in time to see your show Shug, but I'm glad I was able to meet you and talk for a bit. That was awesome. I'll prepare better the next time you're in town! Oh, and I've got an idea for a video that I think you'll want to check out. I'll send you a link once I've made it. Spoiler, in involves stickers and a motorcycle.
It's funny, I opted for a whoopie sling when I bought my hammock. I saw a lot of videos on using the becket hitch to tie your suspension to your tree huggers. Doesn't work so well with a whoopie sling (unless you don't need to make any adjustments after you hang it). I just received a couple of titanium toggles in the mail today. Marlin spikes will be the way I go!
I really like the marlinspike/toggle/ tree strap/whoopie suspension. Just near and dear to my heart. So many suspension options.......ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZJ8QsJqWwRN4_MaZ8UAyzWm.html
@@shugemery I was trying to avoid using hardware like toggles because it's extra weight, but the Dutch toggles I got weigh 6 grams together. 3g each! Worth the weight.
Great video! I got lost, tho, trying to figure out why one would call a part of a rope sling a "berry". A quick google search showed me the error of my ways, as it is a "bury". (Color my face red! Curse those homophones!) A more serious newbie question: most hammock straps seem to be 10' - 12' in length. Why would a whoopie sling be only 6' long, please? Is there something about Dyneema (or whichever material) that calls for this shorter length?
shugemery just happened to not find any in the campsite I chose.. after that I just went back to cinch buckles where I can get right up to the tree.. I can't wait to try out the new beetles Dutch has coming
I have cynch buckles attached directly to my continuous loop. The tree strap goes directly to the buckle with no other hardware. It's simpler and allows fairly short distances but it means my straps are longer to allow for trees too far apart. But as I really don't like hanging on a long line I'm good with limiting balance.
I'm with Shug; I have 8" continuous loops on the end of my hammock. That way for a very short hang, I can forego the whoopee slings and put the loop directly on my tree strap. I've had to do that a few times.
Hey Shug,I know ya don't like alot of questions and I have gone to The ultimate hang,My question is this? I'm a big fan of Warbonnet gear and have a Wookie UQ, Not a big fan of the black rubber band and want to replace it.Any ideas. Thanks for any ideas.Whoo buddy.
Another great video, thank you Shug. I noticed you had the tape measure out, and I was thinking, if you were looking for another reason to make another video, I would like to see another video on ridge lines, and the use of the tape measure to get the correct or nearly correct length of the ridge line.
Ridgeline is about 83% of hammock length. Give or take. Start there. ua-cam.com/video/xrfBrIEH2-U/v-deo.html www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeHammock4.html theultimatehang.com/hammock-hang-calculator/

It will work. May be hard to get in loose in time.
I came here to learn about hammock suspensions, not to watch another man milk his berry!! Sheesh!
Touche´.
What flavor of juice do you get when you milk your burry?
Tomato juice.
I have never seen you using webbing all the way from tree to hammock. Any comments?
I do all the time in sub 0º weather with my pod system.....ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZJsrfxqF0h6OeCVQY1WGnXG.html
That is my comment.
What's the point of the toggle? I'm thinking I could use a stick for the same job
Sure you can use a stick. I just prefer my toggle.
Nothing to say about the Wookie in the background eh? =-)) hanginyaker here
I'll be saying it later eh'
Aye milk ye bury
92.7.5% of the time. What would that be in millimeters?
Yes. Though can be computed in inchworms.....
Careful.....Whoopie Goldberg may sue you over this title......LOL!!! Whooo Buddy!!!
Whoopie don't Sling.
Boom!!! Correct answer!!! Love me some Shug!!!
Hey Shug, did you add that ring yourself onto your whoopie sling?
No, it came on there. You could always put a key-ring type on there if you needed.
I am not comfortable with the term, milking your berry.
Touché
Just because you enjoyed saying woopie so much iv subbed 😄
Whoopie ad infinitum!!! Thankee for the sub.
That link for the whoopie slings isn't working for me
That company went out of business. But here...www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/whoopie-slings/

Whoopie sling supremacy
Still my suspension of choice~~
the threads on the berry at 1:30 (on the right side) look stretched?
mine look like that, I thought id damaged it. ¿
Kinda common to look like that where they come together. All mine still hold.
Bury? Berry? Shug, it's just a splice!!
"Milk you splice" don't have the same ring
Inverted truckers hitch ,Chinese finger trap
Haaaa
Are woopie slings lighter than straps with marlin spike hitch
Yes...but it all depends on the kind of straps and lengths each person prefers.
Whoopies and tree straps are less bulky.
Great video! Thanks. Show us how make one!
I just purchase mine these days. Plenty of videos on how to make them....ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=how+to+make+a+whoopie+sling
Funny 😄
Yessir. Sounds good.
How can you not subscribe with an exit like this 😂
Thankee and Whooooo Buddy)))) Ching chang walla walla bing ding.....whoopie sling~
Is there an advantage to using a toggle vs just using a carabiner?
I find a toggle easier to tie in and pull out.
Check these out. Easy peasy.....Dutch Buckle for whoopies....dutchwaregear.com/dutch-buckle-complete-suspension.html

Can be little confusion left on this topic after this video. Bibsoutdoors
Completely off topic, but my girl and I are going to the Snowbird Extravaganza tomorrow! I'm not sure when we'll get there, but hopefully we won't miss you performing!
I am on at 10:45 AM
Oh no! It looks like I'm just barely going to miss you! I'm about to leave right now. Will you be hanging around the event after you perform?
I'm sorry I wasn't able to make it in time to see your show Shug, but I'm glad I was able to meet you and talk for a bit. That was awesome. I'll prepare better the next time you're in town! Oh, and I've got an idea for a video that I think you'll want to check out. I'll send you a link once I've made it. Spoiler, in involves stickers and a motorcycle.
WHOOPIES!!! so easy, even a Shug can Do it!
shug how did you figure out what length of tarp you needed
I have 11' hammocks with ridgelines. 11' tarp covers it fine.
Some use a 12' tarp.
Why do you need a whoopie sling if you have a ridge line
It is the suspension for hanging the hammock. The ridgeline is fir setting the hammock sag. ...ua-cam.com/video/xrfBrIEH2-U/v-deo.html
I love your videos so much! You are such an awesome teacher! Thanks! Def subbed!!!
Thankee for the good words.
DOOD.
You Outa Breath there Shug ? Take it easy Fella. Must get a Carabeena for the Whoopie Slings great things that they are.
Been shooting me gob off a lot of late.
Curse those homophones!)
A more serious newbie question: most hammock straps seem to be 10' - 12' in length. Why would a whoopie sling be only 6' long, please? Is there something about Dyneema (or whichever material) that calls for this shorter length?
Whoopi’s extend to a longer length. A 6 footer will extend to 10 feet give or take. 6 foot is thewhoopie at its shortest.
@@shugemery Many thanks, good sir!
Wow, I remember those Chinese handcuffs. Cool reference, great video.
I tried whoopies but my trees always seemed to be too close and even closing it all the way up still was too loose
Ian Frye Why not try trees that are further apart?
shugemery just happened to not find any in the campsite I chose.. after that I just went back to cinch buckles where I can get right up to the tree.. I can't wait to try out the new beetles Dutch has coming
Ian Frye yes I have some of those beetle buckles and they are very nice.
I've had to do that a few times.
good vid dude. I'm new to hammocking, this will help me get started. thanks.
Thankee and carry forth!
Bungee.....thick shock cord....
shugemery Thank you and thanks for all your great videos!
