- Many parts of the US were hit by unusual weather paterns. Here in northern parts of New England we had 70-80 mile and hour winds causing trees to fall and knocking powerlines out. The morning after we started getting heavy rain which rapidly caused the snow pack to melt to melt. We decided to go for a walk to assess the damage and see what areas of our trails will need some TLC come spring.
All the streams running and the mucking around in the water is really soothing to watch for some reason. Also something about diverting and/or draining water is always really satisfying.

Thanks, we are fine. Compared to most of the other places I've seen we've had it light. The wind took a few trees out but nothing major for us. Parts of out town/street lost power but that's about it locally. Funny enough its right back to being snowy.
I was just thinking, if someone happened across this video without knowing about your trail building, they'd wonder what the heck you're doing out in the woods in the rain with tools! 😁🤣🤘🏼
We got lucky over here in southern Maine. My parents up in Quebec got massive amounts of snow and blow downs...the Quebec fat biking is going to be insane once it's groomed up. You and the lady should consider a Quebec fat bike trip up at SDM, would be A+ content
Having done it in the past I don't love fat biking TBH. It's fun enough, but I personally don't get nearly the same enjoyment out of it and the process to get out the door is more effort than its worth. I'd rather be out on my snowboard, snowskate or use my approach skis

Hehe! I think you are misconstruing my words a little. These are two different situations. That spot In the last video, a single 4 inch pipe was more than enough. On the other hand i knew the area on the work road might become a problem. I figured I'd send it until it became a problem since all the stores had been cleared out of pipes at the time thanks to the pandemic. These 4 inch pipes are okay for most situations but, there's definitely a few times where you need a wee bit more :P

I’m in NH, and probably the worst storm I’d ever seen
It's pretty wild. These kinds of things pop up from time to time, but this one was wild for sure. I wasn't expecting there to be so much water flowing through. I thought we'd find way more trees down given how windy it was

Yeah, we just drove to Haileys family and the roads were horrendous.

You might want to consider a rainwater Catchment Pond, or several. Your forest is loosing valuable nutrients with such heavy rain. Great video.
This was the rain melting the snow that caused all that run off. Even in the worst of storms it's never this bad. That being said I've thought about building a few smaller retention ponds to help control the fluctuations of water. I have one at the very bottom that works great. The frogs and animals absolutely love it.

I'm not anti-12-inch-pipes, there's a time and a place. The first section that was a problem i originally wanted to put in a bigger pipe but it was in the middle of the pandemic so everything was out of stock. All i had was 2x 4 inch pipes so thats what i used. I couldn't even find more 4inch/6inch pipes anywhere. I'm honestly surprised it worked so well! 😂 i was planning on diverting some water like i did if it ever became a big problem.
The second section (thumbnail) is an actual stream that overflowed its embankment and there's not much i can do about. Judging by the erosion patterns, it's not the first time this has happened.

Good thing you've seen this. Now you can do a bunch of bridge and/or rock work. You now know that mother nature doesn't care about trail work. She'll make 'em where SHE wants!
Oh, and now you see why others had recommended 12" rather than 4". Yes, expensive, but stays open when this happens.
If you skip to 3:37 you can see the same section with the 4 inch pipes doing just fine even after the ungodly amount of water. There's plenty of situations where i use bigger pipes if needed, but that wasn't one of them.
Looks like time to get the digger out. Better make notes on where the water flows so you can mitigate it for the future.
Thats part of why we go out and do these walks. Luckily most of our infrastructure worked, but we will have rebuild a few things. That being said this was just a freak combination of heavy rainfall, and hot temps melting the existing snowpack.
What camera are you putting into the snow and water so casually? :-) Good luck with the repairs in the spring!

Where did all the water come from? Especially on top of the hill? Was it all recent rainfall or is there another higher hill that provided it?
Theres a bit more elevation up the hill, but a lot of this is a result of heavy rain melting the snowpack. Beforehand we had 5-8 inches of snow on the ground before, so this was an unusual amount of precipitation. We've gotten heavy torrential rainfalls before and I've never seen it this wet. Fwiw this rainstorm even overwhelmed federal and state funded drainages in our area.
@@PhilsWorld Ah, of course having so much snow makes sense. Hopefully everything can be repaired as needed. :)
