- We're tackling the most demanding projects yet. We're building a backyard MTB trail from the top of out property to the bottom. But to maximize space, we have need to bridge across a creek to an a completely overgrown part of our property. Building the bridge was the easy part, clearing the tread, and building up the infrastructure was the hard part. But this was just the first part of the build we still have to cross this creek a second time.

Time Out: I love these trail building videos even more than your purely bike videos. Ironically, I was going to work on reducing my huge pile of brush with my chipper-shredder this morning but I decided that watching this was more fun. I wish I could do the time-lapse work in real life. (Now, back to the video and I'll see if Hailey is OK.)
I'm happy to hear that , thank you. I found there was a huge divide in the audience when i posted trail work to SWP, some people loved it, some people hated it. I figured it was best to just start a new channel and target a different audience with this channel. I honestly really enjoy this stuff, but it's hard to do on a consistent basis. The only thing consistent about this channels is the inconsistency :P
Nice Job!
Thanks Allan!
Backing up with a rock rolling along makes it look a bit like a dung beetle :)
Haha so true 🪲
You're pretty proficient on that mini excavator these days!
Somedays i feel more in tune with it than others, but it's been a fun learning process. Also working on irregular terrain has made the learning process a little spicy
It's kinda interesting to watch these knowing that this all happened this summer. Super sick with the rock work on both sides of the creek! That's quality stuff!
Hoping when this coming season rolls around, I can take some creative liberties with a new trail being built near me
NICE build...I really like these types of vids.
Thanks man! I kind enjoy making these videos more but the projects are waaay more labor intensive so unfortunately i can't release them too often.
During the fallen tree cut time, I was waiting for Chris Pratt and the raptors come rushing out of the woods
Bridge turned out looking nice, my only critique or advice for you would have been to lay what they call a couple of Deadman boards. You dig a channel into the dirt on each side lay them down in it, cover them over by dirt and they had extra stability and strength so that if the rock happens to give away the bridge itself won't fall. I love watching your videos and that new bridge and the trail will just make your whole trail system that much better.
Phil your videos inspired me to get my own Trek hardtail and start my MTB adventure. Thank you
I'm stoked to hear that man. It's a great way to unwind :)
Dude what an amazing build. Great stone work.
Thanks a bunch!
Good educational video, thanks 😊
Thanks for watching!
Great job, this bridge looks nice and strong.
Thank you!
Sick to see your trails coming along. Giving me a ton of inspiration for this summer on my own property. I have roughly 350 feet of elevation to work with so it should be fun.
That's about double the elevation that we have! You should be able to do some really cool stuff!
I just wish MN had more vertical so I could also build some cool stuff..!
Awesome vid dude!! Love these second channel posts!
Yeah we are lucky to have a good balance of terrain here. We don't have huge mountains like out west, but it's still plenty for the kind of riding i enjoy most.
G’day Phil,
What a great vid.
You share the concept and then using all your cool toys put it together.
How long did that video take in real time?
Thanks
Why are you destroying your dirt jumps Phil! 😱
The jumps are still there. The side of the jump was lined with rocks which were only there because I didn't have a use for at the time.
Nice bridge and rock work. Cool that your property has so much rock to incorporate into trail building. Now that you've put a good amount of time on your excavator how do you like it? Was the decision to go with Caterpillar based on bunch of research, friends recommendation, or because of proximity to the dealer? Would you buy the same model if you were to do it over? I can see that some of the bigger trail building teams have multiple machines but for someone getting started that can't afford a quiver of heavy equipment do you feel this size excavator is the best if only able to have one machine for everything? I enjoy the content on this channel a lot, thanks.
I did a little bit of research to know the gist of what i wanted but differences between the different brands and models was quite overwhelming. I talked to a few builders locally and used their experience to guide me. I was hoping to get a 302cr but the lead time was over 24 weeks and this was pre covid, but they did have a 301.7cr on hand which was a slightly less powerful version of the 302 so it made sense. I looked at other brands but many don't come with thumbs and the cost of the aftermarket add on put it right in line with the one i got.
I could see myself getting a bigger machine in the future. The biggest thing I've learned is that reach is more important than you think. You want to avoid tracking over things too much, the more you can do without moving, the better.
All in all, this has been a good investment and I'm hindsight I would definitely do it again.
@@PhilsWorld Thanks for the in depth reply, appreciate it. I like that the smaller machines don't need a heavy duty truck to tow them. Agree that looking at and comparing the spec charts between models can be overwhelming. Thanks for your input about the importance of the reach. Have been looking at a LiuGong 918f which comes with a thumb and 4000 hr. warranty for 25k, but has less reach than a lot of the alternatives.
Why so many bridges, make some gap jumps ;D
I knew somebody was ask :P. Tbh I really enjoyed building stuff that i can share with hailey and people who don't ride at my level. Toad's road sees very little traffic because I'm the only one who rides it. And it can be sketchy on wet days. We also use these trails for XC skiing in the winter so i was trying to balance fun and utility.
In the future i might build a creek gap. I have a better sense on how much speed we actually cary through some of these sections. Honestly i had no idea if building anything on the other side was going to be feasible at all.
@@PhilsWorld a log skinny across the stream works great as a chickenline ;)
Love watching videos of trail building even tho I can’t ride due to ankle injury in September and having surgery in a week … probably won’t be riding till June 😢… You need a chainsaw sponsor 😊 #stihl
Sorry to hear that, hopefully you can make the best of time off the bike and do some cool stuff you haven't had the time to do.
Also, it's nice not having sponsors for everything. I enjoy buying things and not having to owe anybody anything. There's no such thing as a free lunch 😉
@@PhilsWorldthanks … 2 1/2 months Jon weight bearing … ye i understand the sponsors thing make sense… I got a new puppy 2 days ago and I have been working on my racetrack

Dude that slot car track is awesome! I had a few tyco courses growing up and id constantly be rebuilding the layout but i never had a cool space and scenery like yours. I loved the smell of them, reminds me of Christmas.
@@PhilsWorldthanks .. I had them as a kid .. became an adult and decided to build the track I wanted as a kid .. kinda how it came to be
Great job with the bridge Phil! How did you attain the knowledge necessary to make that structure sound?
This is the best explanation I've seen.

I just like tinkering and doing stuff. Sometimes the things i do work out great and and sometimes they fail. If they fail, i like to see how i can fix it, and then avoid repeating that mistake in the future.
Phil, do you run into many snakes? I know Vermont only has one pocket of venomous snake, timber rattlers in Rutland County, but I have heard the hog nose and garter snakes can be plentiful
It's very very rare. I can count the number snakes we've found on one hand and the biggest was maybe al 18inches.
Nice. Also, bought my son a hardtail gt based almost entirely on your videos and advice. Great bike. Keep the content coming!
Hey phil, I might have missed it and it might have been in the video, but when was this project finished around? I lived in Michigan so knowing North North America, it usually still has snow until April. Great video!
This took place around june of 2022. This is part of a larger series so if you'd like you can see the first episode here

And yeah early April for us is often snowy or cold but with warm days mixed in. Our riding season doesn't kick off until may. For context this is what this most recent April looked like. ua-cam.com/video/t4824dWKOJg/v-deo.html
@@PhilsWorld Thank you! Love the videos so much. Cant wait for you to upload on the main chanel again.
Wait so that was last summer, how did that fare in the recent rain. Was this in your rain damage video?
The rain in this video was from the biggest storms we had this summer/. It was not the same as the "flood" from December. That being said, it held up great to this flood, so I'm confident that this will was sufficiently built up to hold up to just about anything. 😁
atm u would pay 7.25 usd for a gallon in germany :D
Our fuel is heavily subsidized compared to the prices you have overseas. Honestly we should be paying much more for fuel but I'm also not complaining.
24:00 are the rocks painted?
No definitely not painted, you might be seeing the teeth marks left by the excavator bucket.
How did you secure the bridge to the Rock? Did this all hold up to that huge flood you showed a few videos back?
The bridges isnt bolted into anything but with the way it's built around the rocks there it's not going anywhere. I might make a few minor adjustments to it this spring but they probably aren't necessary.
As far as the flooding goes, this held up great. I'll take a closer look to the footings in the spring just in case but even at the peak flow, there wasn't anything that concerned me.
@@PhilsWorld awesome to hear. I like this content more than the main channel (no offense). Reminds me of Andrew Camrata (sp?)
Funny enough we know his sister from mountain biking in the area. We got to talking on the trail and she mentioned her brother also had a UA-cam channel so i checked it out and was subscribed ever since.
But yes, the story telling is definitely by his style. I've found myself appreciating the side of UA-cam that's a bit more cut and dry. I enjoy watching people do things and learning from them.
@@PhilsWorld Hey Phil, on this thread you've been talking to me on my personal account. I'm Evan and I build MTB bikes on my YT channel. I also live in Bentonville! I noticed you don't have any Bentonville videos that I could find and if you ever visit here I'd love to show you around on the real fun stuff!
Oh Hey Evan, I've seen your channel grow over the past year. Nice work!
Eventually I'll make my way out that way. I've got to be honest, as much as i enjoy traveling and seeing new places, i get pretty bad anxiety whenever i travel to unfamiliar places. That's one of the reasons i don't travel much as id like. But I've been trying to visit more places lately so we'll see!
off road diesel has more sulfur, you pay extra for the flittering and tax. Here only farmers and some heavy equipment can use it and it is not sold retail. You need to build buy. They sulfur was removed out of most fuel to stop acid rain in the mid to late 80s. I doubt your projects will detrimental to our water supply
As far as I know, there was more sulfur in off road diesel up until 2014 when a new EPA regulation went into full effect. Since then, according to what I've read, the two are identical minus the dye. Though I'm definitely not an expert on this basing this off the posts and articles I've found regarding this. But maybe farmers can buy less processed fuel in bulk quantities? 🤷♂️
@PhilsWorld I am Canada myself I am not sure exactly of what and when. It also may have changed as my information can be out of date
@PhilsWorld btw nice video. I kept thinking about when open your own park what type will it be? 🤔 lift access or shuttle? Convert ski hill?or like that place in Quebec, one team makes trails and you pay for access, the land owner, ski hill sells lift tickets.
