Fixing A Seasonal Mud Bog On A Mountain Bike Trail

  • There's a low point on this trail that doesn't drain well. This creates a mud bog in the early spring and late fall and ended up rutting up. While this isn't a huge mess, it's annoying enough that we don't ride that trail as often as we'd like. To fix it once and for all, we're going to be rock armoring the base, and then creating a turnpike to get us through the low points while also elevating the riding tread of the trail.

Nothing more relaxing than watching Phil working on his trail! Love that Gator! Super useful!!

The gator might be a little rough around the edges, but it's proven to be an absolute workhorse. I've come to really like the extra volume tires, it doesn't rut things up.

@@PhilsWorld have you done any wrenching on it? How hard is it to maintain??

I've done very little tbh, just carb clean, oil, filters, fuel pump, tire change. It's a pretty simple rig, so for me it's a good thing the play around with. I got it 3 years ago and it was the first ICE Ive tinkered with.

The good news is that if you need rocks to build your trail, no matter where you dig, you get rocks. The bad news is that wherever you dig, you get rocks. A million year long freeze-thaw cycle of the ice age will do that. (By the way, we are actually still in an ice age but are enjoying a 10,000 year interglacial period at the moment. The ice will return but I don't think you have much to worry about!) As always, your trail work videos are superb and I always look forward to them.

I have one of those deer gators and it is so handy, love the dump bed on them, I use it to pull our manure spreader around

Phil I really enjoy these videos, the part where you stomped the rocks into the mud was incredibly satisfying! Very cool watching you work, taking some notes for the day I finally own some land

Honestly i don't have much interest in building a creek gap. I'm not ruling it out, but there's a million other things that interest me way more.

I would love to do a collab build together. We can do one at Everstoke or a place you would like to build. I would like to trade some trail building ideas.

Not out of question! I'm pretty committed to a few projects here for the time being, but it's always fun to see what others have going on.

😂 i noticed the bottle had wiggled loose and was about to fall out of the gator, and right as i grabbed it i hit a big root ball which jerked the wheel on me. This thing would really benefit from a steering damper!
