Building a pole barn on a budget. This week we're grading the barn pad and bringing in a bunch of dirt! We're pouring concrete footers and standing the poles!

Lol right! It’s crazy how much control they have over something you own.
There are a lot of things about America that I discovered after 40 which completely destroyed my image as a patriotic American
It's not your land it's theirs and they want to make sure they get the most out of it should you not pay your rent/taxes
Permits here are thousands of dollars and they throw every roadblock in front of you they can to squeeze more out if you.

For sure a little tricky to keep straight while building but worth it
Now this is going to be helpful to watch! Just finishing up a deck build and I am hoping to start on a small 14x24 post and beam barn/tool shed. What I have in mind, you just confirmed the starting process. I wish my town building codes are as easy as yours, but my town has every finger in every blueberry in a blueberry pie.

Pro tip from a crane operator...
If you tie a rope to the loop end of your choked strap, you can just give it a yank from the ground instead of setting up a lader on every post. Speed, safety, and efficiency all in one!
Thanks man I thought about that but didn’t know exactly how to tie it. You got a recommend knot for that?
I like to use a Bowlin knot, but as the old guys say, "If you can't tie a knot, tie a lot," lol.
Thanks for the tip! I’m actually hiring a crane for the roof install. I’m running engineered trusses my plan is to assemble all the trusses and purlins on the ground and lift it in position. Maybe in two sections 🤞🏻 any experience with that?
Yes, I've done lots of trusses, the operator should have long chains and make sure they bring a SPREADER BAR also when you put your chains on always make sure the back of the chain hook faces the middle of the load. The operator will show you if you're doing something wrong
Also, always use a tagline on one end of the truss so you can turn it from the ground and don't book on a windy day

I am building a pole barn very similar to the one are building. It would be helpful to describe the barn in some detail in this first episode so we know what you are trying to accomplish. I am using a concrete slab with metal roof and board and batten rough lumber. Hope to pick some tips watching your progress. Good luck.

At 67y.o. It’s not a do it by myself job but looking like that’s the way it’s going to be.

Looks like a good start. I like the idea of putting the wood on top of concrete... seams when you concrete them in the ground, they will rot in 20 or 30 years maybe...
wrap your posts before putting them in the ground and they will outlive you, and your barn will be a hell of a lot stronger in a big wind. Why put posts on top of grade? Its cheaper and stronger just to pour a pad and stick frame it.

We have to full footings with 2" extruded polystyrene hard board 48" on the outside. This is $1,600 to get that far. It is best to compact the soil, then rock in lifts. Without wire mesh & rebar and 4" minimum concrete slab cracking will happen. I did a garage at my first house in half of the floor at a time using a 9 bag mix & 3,000lb test limestone or basically state highway mix. A hoist company will require 24" square footings 12" deep under the slab and they drill core samples to test strength otherwise they won't sell or install one if you decide to put one in. Used at auction, they run $1,500-$2,000 as the expense comes in the installation. I bought the house my wife wanted and never looked at the garage. My heart sank to find a small 1.5 car garage with a low ceiling. Stupid me making money and staying busy fixing cars until 9PM.

Wir betonieren immer u stahl ein. 1m hoch schaut der oben raus und 80cm in die Erde. Daran der Pfosten mit 2oder 3 bolzen. Fundament aber 60cm. Eingespannte Stütze heißt das. Da kann der Wind ruhig kommen!!!!👍🇩🇪

I've never seen footers that are more narrow at the bottom. Isn't the whole point of a footer to be wider than what's above it, in order to spread out the weight per square inch?

Where I live there is no permit requirements for agricultural buildings…until you add electricity or plumbing, you need a permit for those but not the building…it’s weird.
Ours is kinda similar they really didn’t care to much.
Could you go more into the boom lift set up ?
lol, built a few buildings on top of that hard clay a few inches down, no fill dirt... have had no issues... rock then concrete ...

Did you contract someone to put your construction drawings together or did you buy the plans set?
I will be following along as I'm in process of building my man cave/storage, 60x120x18. We just got all the rock pad done and will be pouring the piers late next week if the weather holds out, it has been so wet and super hot lately!

I have a fairly private property. I don't ask permission anymore I just find the best possible loopholes/plausible deniability and do/build what I want. (responsibly) we need to change our mindsets and act as a community.

Tie a string line or small rope to your sling and you can just pull it down instead of grabbing a ladder next time
Good video! Don’t understand the removal of the dirt ? Grandma’s barn stood on black dirt, built over 100 years ago. Stood just fine no problems with the foundation. A Tornado took the barn down
Newbie here - Why did you use anchor brackets on 4 poles and sink the rest?
The power poles were a lot longer and will hold most of the weight

total hogwash, I've pulled posts in concrete that have been in the ground for 30 plus years with no rot. Water is not what rots a treated post its the aerobic microbials in the first 6 to 8 inches of SOIL. Seen too many barns blown down by leaving posts on top of footers. A serious hinge point.
Dont know if its an optical illusion but your poles look like they have large bow to them.
There’s actually one that bowed pretty decent when it dried. But also I’m using a go pro a lot so it might be the fish bowl effect also from the wide angle.

How did you get the height of your footers established and all level?
I used a string with a bubble level.

Is it better to do it this way than to stick the poles in the ground?
wrap your posts with a post protector and stick them in the ground in concrete, trust me, barns are much stronger that way. in a big straight line wind those brackets are a serious hinge point.
Learning a lot watching your videos, but i dont understand the wetset brackets, they look cheap and like they dont hold very well. They also dont have any cross members to keep them from pulling out, not to mention they are almost $100 each! Why not get a longer post and sleeve it for that price? Seems like the way to go in my opinion.
Concrete retains moisture and gives it strength. Wood rots with constant exposure to moisture. Wood below grade tends to rot and then you got a headache to solve

It was 19k and financed through kubota for 5 yrs at 0%. It’s the best payment I’ve ever had👍🏻
@@ProjectDadLife Nothing against you having a good tractor. it's just frustrating when all the videos about homesteading and doing things yourself. Start out with thousands and thousands of dollars worth of equipment. To some people nineteen thousand dollars is a lot .

It doesnt seem like much concrete for this big of a building.
It’s a 8-9” -3’ deep hole with a 3-4” deep 12” circle on top filled with concrete. No formula really just twice the depth of my frost line. Fingered it was plenty for a barn
