Awesome skills, however I almost lost my left thumb. Cutting wood on my table saw, just as you were in the video. I got a kick back, it happened in a millisecond. My left thumb hit the moving blade. I had to call my wife home from work. She had to take my to the ER to have it stitched back together. The Dr. Said he sees several cases a month, where people have table saw accident. I have at least 30 plus years of wood working experience. It only takes once to have a accident. Plus you might consider removing your ring while using the lathe I have also heard of accidents where people have their fingers severed on the lathe while wareing rings. Be safe, think safety first. Happy wood working. 👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😎
Very nice, as a wood turner that was a project after my own heart. May I suggest that if you do a similar project in the future you could use the double stick tape you used on the sound board to stick two boards together, then turn the neck out of them. Then pull the boards apart like you did with the bridge. Then you will have two necks instead of one and a pile of plane shavings.
It looked like it was a long process to create this instrument, but you have master it cause this is not the first time you do one of these!!! Awesome!!!
Bravo 👏 an odd duck for sure, but it has a unique style. The only thing I’d recommend would be to have hollowed out the inner part of the bowl more, shooting for back and side thicknesses of no more than a 1/4”. Most mandolins that size have backs and sides that are 50% of that thickness, just by comparison.
I've been watching a few episodes of this series and it's very cool work. You could try starting from a calebasse (like the kind of dried pumpkin they use for African instruments), your instrument bodies already have this kind of look and you would get a thinner body without having to remove all this wood.
Great video Dimitri, I'm not a luther, or a musician, but watching your videos tempts me at time to try my hand at it. But then I realize once again, that except for a mean stereo, I can't make music to save my life. A kazoo is more my speed, lol!
I thought the same thing, until about 5 years ago. Over 50 instruments later, I still don't play the best, but I enjoy building. The best part is the look on someone's face when I hand them their new instrument.
Great as usual.. I thought for a while there you were going to get to the end of the video and not going to give it a play... And then you came through. Well done :)
Dude its amazing to see you make instruments again! Can you do a balalaika? If it interests you. There is a pdf on how to make them out on the internet
Great Project, good to see you make an instrument again! (oh, and I liked the filming of the turning where (because of the speed) it looked like the chisel was in the middle of nowhere!) All the best from Portugal!
Так и хочется повторить! Особенно сейчас, длинными зимними вечерами. К сожалению, пока не достроена мастерская и вечера приходится работать в городской квартире.
That was a lovely video, Dimitri. I have made a couple of cigar box guitars and strum sticks. I love making musical instruments, but I can only play two songs :-)

Wonderful job mate and really entertaining vid. I love the sound of the instrument, so far away and evocative - the Greek version of the 'high, lonesome sound'! Didn't you make a thicknessing sander for the lathe a few years ago? You could have used the lathe another way there! Great job Dimitris, thanks mate.

I definitely want to try a pumpkin. I just didn't have the opportunity to get one so far.

Why not! Anyone can do it with a little patience.
nice video. please more instruments
thank you
Jonny/trash builder _ have you checked SWC's back catalogue? He has made lots of instruments - I think you'd enjoy them!
thank you really. i love that instrument videos. please share more. also i would like to see your solid body violin experiment. just a suggest ;)
Thank you. The violin is a good idea. I try to make more instruments when I can.

How would you go about making a wind instrument like a flute or sax out of wood?
You never cease to amaze, that was an awesome instrument build! And it also played well...... :)

Can you please make a pipa?!?! I would like to know how you would make it.
Yeah! nice video! and nice "guitalele"!
thank you

Wow,,, to the max...😆
Thank you
It's beautiful. The back and sides are too thick. I know you wanted to use the lathe and it is hard to get it thinner on the lathe.
That's what I'm like it.
