How to make a tin can baglama ( mini bouzouki )

  • This instrument is inspired by people in Greek prisons before world war two. They used whatever materials they could find in order to make music while locked up. I made mine out of a food tin can, basswood and mahogany.
    Tools and materials I propose:
Wire Brush Kit For Drill: amzn.to/2pQSdYS
    Jointer planer: amzn.to/2IQZ3WR
    Speed square: amzn.to/2YoU9XE
    Circular saw: amzn.to/2pJu9Hf
    Table saw: amzn.to/2RBf0nT
    Chisel set: amzn.to/2pILO1B
    Rotary tool: amzn.to/2IKdUSS
    Bandsaw: amzn.to/2pHj49v
    Cordless drill: amzn.to/2A6fTOy
    No4 hand plane: amzn.to/2CnmTrZ
    Block plane: amzn.to/2RLiAMf
    BeaverCraft Sloyd Knife: amzn.to/3mM832Y
Cobalt Drill Bit Set : amzn.to/3kjMsgl
    Cabinet Scraper set: amzn.to/2EqCH0H
    Flat file: amzn.to/2RHIMHH
    Round file: amzn.to/2RHJ80Z
    Spoke shave: amzn.to/2IjIALM
    Fret wire: amzn.to/2y9E0L4
    Flush trim saw: amzn.to/2PnkoJM
    Wood burner: amzn.to/2pHkAbG

Thank you for showing us your work of art. I became interested in DIY musical instruments a few years ago due to a personal tragedy. I'd been hit by a car. After the hospital, I was sent to a nursing home. It took me a year and a half to fight my way home to my house. I had no musical instrument when I was in the nursing home. I was very lonely and bored. I decided to take advantage of my current freedom to learn to make musical instruments from whatever is available, so that i can make something to play even in a nursing home. I've made a tiny ukelele, but it is difficult to play. I should have made it full-sized. Anyway, you are a kindred spirit. Thank you for keeping traditional skills alive.

And remember there's the Irish bouzouki too. I know it sounds like the start of a joke but there really is. The Irish bouzouki has a flat back and usually has four courses. It was popularised by bands like Planxty and The Bothy Band in the 70s.

@@gnomepilled103 I actually bought a kamence a couple years later and yes, similar idea. Mine used a tin can for both the body and resonating surface (instead of skin) with a neck that pokes through so the strings are attached to the other end. It looks most similar to a Kazakh style with the cylinder type body. My Persian kamence body is walnut turned to the shape of a gourd.
