The Oud is one of the few instruments from the stringed lute family that has yet to be standardized some five thousand years after we first knew about it (its probably older). Each oud maker has their own dimensions and their own methods to make each oud truly sound different. Huge respect for this marvelous video.
True, although Turkish ouds come close to being standardized. After Manol redesigned the instrument over 100 years ago, Turkish / Greek / Armenian ouds differ in looks only; the basic construction has remained faithful to Manol's design (and in fact came to be the "Turkish" oud's distinctive feature).
@@arsene737 In appearance, yes. In internal construction completely different. I visited many Oud makers in Turkey and the dimensions of their bridges and spacing differed greatly. What I do find interesting is that most ouds from one region will tend to aim for a certain sound, and the search for this sound is usually what drives construction. For example the tonality of an Iraqi oud, or the depth of an Iranian oud, are very different from the high-sustain and pitch of Turkish counterparts as example.
No one wants standardized ouds tbh, ouds in syria have a type of mold or shape, iraq has different shapes, egypt has a different shape, there was an old Egyptian mold that was big, the bahrain factory produces in several shapes including pear, iraqi, egyptian, didnt see syrian yet tho. To me it makes each oud unique and keeps the ouds origins traceable
Beautiful craftsmanship by the hands of a artist. Having built a few guitars I can appreciate your attention to detail & the patients of a saint that's required in the making of such a fine and beautiful instrument. No doubt it's blessed with the sounds of the God's. My greatest praise & respects. You are truely blessed
Well, depending on the area of Canada you live in, it can either be extremely easy or extremely hard. For example, I live in Alberta, where there's a pretty large presence of Syrian immigrants like myself, and the oud can be a pretty big part of Syrian traditional music
Congratulations ! I am about to build a western baroque lute, but I learn many things by watching your video. The tradition of oud's making still can teach many interesting things. And the music of the video is full of feeling and beauty too !
Finally a relief! So many guitar and other instrument makers on youtube none of them I saw used a dovetail joint, until now! Its such a simple step to make it more strong. Thank you!
one of the most beautifull things I've ever seen! not only the piece, but the process... perfection at it's very best! you're a tremenduously gifted guy. thanks for sharing.
Not only is this a beautifully made instrument but I must say this is a well made and extremely informative video. I have learned a lot from your craftsmanship. Thank you
Great job!!! You are an incredible craftsman with skills that are not taught anymore. My grandfather was a cabinet maker from Denmark, he used all hand tools to do amazing work. Thank you for showing us.
I watched your video more than 3 time , you are doing great, I visited many oud makers in Syria and Iraq and never saw accuracy in building oud like you.
Beautiful workmanship and attention to detail. I loved watching you plane the dovetail join (4:45). I can't believe it only took three hours to cut the sound hole - that is exquisite!
Beautiful intrument, thanks for the details build footage. It sounds great, I love the brightness and deep base tones. I'm thinking I'd like to include a rosette like yours on my next classical guitar build and see how it sounds and looks.
@Jean Claude Peeters Are you sure he didn't? There are scribed lines on the tail and it looks like he used similar measurements to rough in the pin til he got the join he wanted.
Well done, you made the oud. Thank you for your wonderful efforts in manufacturing ancient instruments, because you made the oud, and the oud is beautiful and produces beautiful sounds, that is, it is a string. Thank you very much for your efforts ❤❤❤❤❤
It sounds as amazing as it looks. Night before last, I fell asleep contemplating the esoteric meaning of a glyph I believe to be a luthier's chisel, though Egyptologists have not identified the object.
Beautiful build. I Love the sound holes. The only thing that bothers me is the sharp angel of the head stock. Absolutely a beautiful sounding instrument.
Beautiful workmanship, very calming and soothing to watch; and it sounds lovely. Many thumbs up! (35 idiots gave this a thumbs down ---- why, because it's a "foreign" instrument from the Middle East? (Without which we would not have guitars, of course). Or jealousy at the level of concentration and focus exhibited by the maker, which they"ll never have? Sheesh, some people.....)
Really beautiful! Where would I be able to get an oud fingerboard like this? I have an oud that has high action and the fingerboard was removed and then something else was stuck on in place of the fingerboard. I think if I put a new fingerboard on top of it, it will cure my high action. Maybe!

I close my eyes for the moment, and I fall asleep. I dream for the moment and I am somewhere in the past of the middle east.

WOW. I'm really impressed by the quality and sound. Wonderful.
I watch the video again and again. Your work and the oud is wonderful. I play oud and i can say this is the most perfect oud making i ever saw.
Unlike any stringed instrument, the sound of an oud brings up very specific images of desert life.
Beautiful video!
I have fallen in love with the oud! I hope to get one for my birthday. Although it is very hard since I live in Canada lol

Mohammadi brothers in Iran make incredible ouds and craftsmanship is out of this world. they also do the Persian version called Barbat.
One of the most professional Oud making and detailing
Beautiful work. Nicely done. The laminate neck and dovetail is a great design. Will make the neck virtually indestructible.
Beautiful workmanship and attention to detail. I loved watching you plane the dovetail join (4:45). I can't believe it only took three hours to cut the sound hole - that is exquisite!
الفن ليس فقط في العزف بل في الاتقان في العمل جميل جدا❤

At 9:22, Funny to see the building of an ancient acoustic instrument right next to your amp-repair bench, complete with oscilloscope!
It sounds as amazing as it looks. Night before last, I fell asleep contemplating the esoteric meaning of a glyph I believe to be a luthier's chisel, though Egyptologists have not identified the object.
What is the background music?
