    The Oud is one of the few instruments from the stringed lute family that has yet to be standardized some five thousand years after we first knew about it (its probably older).
    Each oud maker has their own dimensions and their own methods to make each oud truly sound different.
    Huge respect for this marvelous video.

    • @arsene737
      @arsene737 4 роки тому +2

      True, although Turkish ouds come close to being standardized. After Manol redesigned the instrument over 100 years ago, Turkish / Greek / Armenian ouds differ in looks only; the basic construction has remained faithful to Manol's design (and in fact came to be the "Turkish" oud's distinctive feature).

    • @GamerDudester
      @GamerDudester 4 роки тому +3

      @@arsene737 In appearance, yes. In internal construction completely different. I visited many Oud makers in Turkey and the dimensions of their bridges and spacing differed greatly. What I do find interesting is that most ouds from one region will tend to aim for a certain sound, and the search for this sound is usually what drives construction. For example the tonality of an Iraqi oud, or the depth of an Iranian oud, are very different from the high-sustain and pitch of Turkish counterparts as example.

    • @mo7.7
      @mo7.7 4 роки тому +5

      No one wants standardized ouds tbh, ouds in syria have a type of mold or shape, iraq has different shapes, egypt has a different shape, there was an old Egyptian mold that was big, the bahrain factory produces in several shapes including pear, iraqi, egyptian, didnt see syrian yet tho.
      To me it makes each oud unique and keeps the ouds origins traceable

    Finally a relief! So many guitar and other instrument makers on youtube none of them I saw used a dovetail joint,until now! Its such a simple step to make it more strong. Thank you!

    Congratulations ! I am about to build a western baroque lute, but I learn many things by watching your video. The tradition of oud's making still can teach many interesting things. And the music of the video is full of feeling and beauty too !

      Well, depending on the area of Canada you live in, it can either be extremely easy or extremely hard. For example, I live in Alberta, where there's a pretty large presence of Syrian immigrants like myself, and the oud can be a pretty big part of Syrian traditional music

    (35 idiots gave this a thumbs down ---- why, because it's a "foreign" instrument from the Middle East? (Without which we would not have guitars, of course). Or jealousy at the level of concentration and focus exhibited by the maker, which they"ll never have? Sheesh, some people.....)

      @NJGuitar  7 років тому

      The book is written quite well, however I recommend you to check out any oud making related video on youtube and resources on the web, too, to see different ways of doing things and selecting what fits best your abilities. A good selection of (sharp) tools is also a plus (big and small hand plane, files and chisels). There are some steps which require some woodworking practice, especially joinery (joining the ribs, the two pieces for the top and the peghead slot), also lots of patience in making does things fit well :-) And last but not least it is important to find a good wood supplier, if possible a local one where you can look and feel all the pieces before buying. Anyways, I would like to encourage you to try, it is a fun project with a lot to learn.
