I just noticed that you only have 3.81K subscribers... I always thought you had 300K subscribers because your videos are of insanely high quality. I'm planning not to start out with violins but I'm watching this to learn as much as possible to make a Talharpa. Then I want to make a Vielle if I am successful at making the Talharpa not sound terrible. Planning to use gut strings.... I am partway through carving the mahogany top, and it's not glued together but one piece, so that simplifies a lot of it, being a big rectangle. Also using hide glue, but the titebond stuff in the tube. Is there any significant advantage to using the more traditional approach on the overall sound?
@@hellomate639 The biggest advantage is that if you use hide glue, you can "unglue" it later, but you can't do that with titebond. I heard there are people using titebond on guitars, but I'd prefer hide glue on acoustic instruments.
@@MekwokStudio Heh, instead of a Talharpa I actually am almost done making a lyre! It sounds a lot better than I thought it would sound. Classical guitar strings, but not nylon, rather gut and silk wound. I just have to glue the back on now (it press fits in, but it needs a little trimming and careful adjustment to be glued in the right spot).
I discovered your channel by luck, and started a couse to learn how to be a luthier. My first intrument is going to be finished in about 2 months, and then they will teach how to make a violin. Im loving this career, carving wood is sooo cool, and i can see myself in 30 years doing that
Awesome video, I love how specific you are with your recommendations. You give the tool needed, the purpose of the tool and any alternatives that may work. Very accessable. Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Your delivery is so concise and clear. Your video includes helpful footage. I always dreamed of being able to attend Michael Darnton's summer camp, and I was disappointed to learn it has stopped running.
thank you for making this video... .knowing the name of the tool.. to be able to seek it... is nearly as important is knowing what to do with it.... appreciate you taking the time... subscribed. Excellent videos.
I made a Sacconi Compass after seeing it in one of your previous videos. Even though I "only" build guitars, it's so useful! That Stanley vise is definitely going on my shopping list. It'll be super useful!
Very very useful. I saw a luthier in France sell a set of luthier tools for €1000+, needed exactly that video! Thank you so much for making it, and for including things such as hand creams :)
@@MekwokStudio I didn't haha, don't have that kinda budget, I thought I'd start small and gathering tools as I go :) They definitely didn't include hand creams 😁
I ended up making most of my own tools when I started. I think I'm going to have to add a sacconi compass to that list. I've been using some wide calipers to judge the archings, but I think that looks a lot better
Very helpful, I'm not sure I will build a violin (I'm more interested in building guitars or mandolins) but this is very helpful and informative. Keep the videos coming!
Great video! FYI you can find Japanese style pull-cut saws in the USA. I found some in a local hardware store and they weren't too expensive. Not easy to find, tho, for sure.
Where can I find the school of violin making . Right now I’m here in HongKong and I want to learn the art of violin making. I will appreciate so much thru your help if you can give me some information regarding on this matter. 😊
First aid kit should be close anywere 😂. Thank you for your explainery videos, your very kalm and funny just wat it takes. Im collecting tools and working towards my first bould. The nek and vingerboard dimensions were can you find them? Greetings from the Netherlands (Holland) 🇳🇱
Maybe the answer will be in Part 2 - I'm in Asia and for the most part the tools I can source within reasonable costs and delivery. What I have not yet found is a good source for wood - tonewood, blocks, etc. Yes it is possible to source from some worldwide suppliers but the shipping costs become very significant. Any alternative to this?
Yay, shipping is your biggest enemy beside taxes. There are no alternative If you are looking for European wood, because European wood is.. from Europe. But there are actually some tonewood on Alibaba and TaoBao that are not so bad; I’ve tried some, the maple is generally harder, and spruce is softer, compare to European wood.
I believe every time you go to an electric tool to make something easier or faster. You have a loss that art. Skill set. And then you've lost connection with the wood

Lyre! Sound cool! It actually reminds me of Da Vinci’s silver lyre, would be great to build one.

gotta be careful using a power drill for the coffee beans that you don't overheat the grinder and cook the beans while you grind them :)
thanks for the pro tip! Not going to make them too warm!
Do you have your address in HongKong . I wish I can pay a visit in your violin shop.
How long are you staying?
Im dolt that If you mix egg white with confectioners sugar (icing sugar) and apply it to a splinter the paste will remove the splinter from you skin.
Oh man I really wanted to make a violin but I am poor ;0; Do you have any suggestions for making an easier instrument?
Using 3D-printer I guess, we can design many objects so accurate. :)
Ah yes a portal gun, very inportant to find interdimenstional deals on tools
You think I’m going to use all these tools without a death crystal?

Very true, kind of like the different between using pens to draw and using OpenAi.
I ignored the gloves and just worked with what I had on hand. To say the least, I put a chisel through my thumb. I still won't wear gloves, though.
