Why Secularism?

  • Before Europe became secular, it went through 178 years of destructive religious wars. From 1522 to 1700 the reformation and counter-reformation caused 17 million deaths in war, famine, disease, and massacres. The pinnacle was reached in 1618-1648 called the Thirty Year War that alone caused the death of 8 million people. Finally, from mutual exhaustion, the Treaty of Westphalia was signed in 1648. Slowly these wars came to a close by 1700. The Treaty settled on the doctrine of non-interference in each other's states and accepted religious pluralism. It was only then that the Age of Enlightenment began and Europe achieved 200 years of peace and enormous prosperity (which they sadly used to conquer the rest of the world but that's another story). Those who argue for secularism in Pakistan hope that we don't have to go through 178 years of war to realise that discrimination by the state on the basis of religion cannot bring peace or prosperity in Pakistan.

    • @MDVaashir

A secular Muslim is someone, who believes that Allah SWT was sufficient enough to create the universe and create highly sophisticated mathematical & physical laws
that governs planets in orbit but wasn't sufficient enough to create laws that governs the Human society.
A clear Warning to Seculars from Allah SWT in Quran 2:09 - 2:12
[ There are some who say: “We believe in Allah,” while in fact they do not believe. They are trying to deceive Allah and Muslims. There is sickness in their hearts and Allah will make them suffer a painful punishment.
And when they are told, "Do not spread corruption on earth," they answer, "We are only improving things!" Indeed, it is they who are the corruptors. ]
Allah SWT's advice to Muslims on Surah Al Baqarah 2:211
      || O Muslims ! Enter into Islam wholeheartedly and don't follow Satan's footsteps. ||
What Liberals don't understand is the basic fact that Islam is not limited to one's personal relation with God (like Hinduism/Christianity), but also has a political dimension and is a complete code of life.
Whoever believes that there is a guidance (Huda) more perfect than that of the Prophet of Islam (as spelled out in hadith and Quran), or that someone else's rule is better than the Prophet is a Kafir. We have our Hudud Laws from Allah SWT, and to apply Hudud laws we shall require Islamic state (Not secular State). In a secular state, it will not be allowed to take Jayiza fron non-Muslims.
As Mawlana Mawdudi rightly said, that the goal of secularists was not to ameliorate tensions and divisions in multi-religious societies, but to avoid the 'restraints of morality and divine guidance' and thus eliminate all morality, ethics, or human decency from the controlling mechanisms of society.
Lastly, I will end with another Aayat of Noble Quran 33:36
[ It is not open for a Muslim, once Allah and His messenger have decided a thing, to have any other choice in that matter ]

Are you telling us here how Islam can be replaced with something which has'nt been established? should we undergo secular experience. Why don't you give example of Indian secularism?
It appears to me that you haven't gone through Quan Sunnah and the Golden Islamic history !
It is due to secular states acts that world has become place with full of chaos.... is'nt it? is USA secular / liberal state? is UK or Europe is secular today? It is not because it has ruined the global peace by intervening into others mess in order to push their objectives / interests, not for peace, but purely based on accumulating and looting resources and wealth of nations by seeking upper hand / control. Europe, today by anydefination of secularism is not secular!
7:57 sir sir sir, wait,,, hold on!
It is not about the matter of minority rights, but it is the majority of majority rights! Isn't it the standard of same secularism according to which majority frames the rule?

This is the difference. If It was a mullah preaching/explaining why Pakistan should refrain from secularism then it would be at least an hour long video. An hour of shouting, criticising other cultures, unnecessarily questioning peoples imaan and what not whereas an intelligent secular-minded pakistani gives so much information within ten minutes, even that in a dignified tone.
Pakistan, the choice is yours. Do you want to see more of mullah tamasha or do you want some progress in the country now. If you want progress we need to adapt secularism and liberism we also need to understand that what happens in other countries (for instance the situation of Muslims in India) is neither none of our business nor our concern. We should not waste energy on useless arguments instead debate on progressive matters like education, health are, employment, business, technology etc, which you will never hear mullahs talk about

What is written in the Constitution has zero effect on the mindset of the people. Look at India. Most people in Bangladesh is non-communal. But most of them do not understand secularism either. Secularism is godlessness in public life and state affairs. Secularism is kufur. It is an alien concept imported from abroad.

@@o_0264 , I am not doing any baqwaas. Secularism has no single monolithic meaning. Not even in the West. The problem with the people of the sub-continent is that they pompously think they know something even when they don't have deep understanding of anything.
Root of the word secularism comes from Christianity where secular means "worldly" as opposed to "godly" or anything related to Church. Such a dichotomy does not exist in Islam (See Quran verse 6:62 Surah al-Anaam). God will call you to account for all your actions in the hereafter, even the actions you have taken as a public official. Islam is holistic and such a dichotomy or any similar idea is kufur. However, by this I am by no means advocating for a Shariah state at all, against which I have other objections.
During the barbarian French revolution this Christian idea of secularism has been taken to a height by banishing God and Church from the public life altogether. The Church, as an institution, had been doing things which were supposed to do be done by govt. e.g., taxing people and running educational schools. The French Revolution has thrown out baby (God) along with the bath water (Church). The American Constitution intelligently mentions the separation of the Church and the state. But their President takes oath by placing hand on the Bible and on their currency is written "In God We Trust". Secularism is not mentioned in American Constitution.
The foolish low IQ politicians of the sub-continent and many uninitiated people like you equate secularism with non-communalism. There lies the problem.

(Addressing to Kuffaar) "And I'm not the worshipper of what you (plural) worship. And you (plural) are not the worshippers of what I worship. FOR YOU (plural) IS YOUR RELIGION AND FOR ME, MY RELIGION".

Napoleonic wars occurred in late 18th and early 19th century which were devastating. It's also called world War 0 by some historians. Anyway it wasn't based on religion but ideological differences so peace really wasn't established but the reason for fighting changed. In the end I'm not against secularism but I advocate for it but we truly don't know its ramifications. Just like Napoleonic wars in which France was secular and everyone who fought them had a different idea shows that's that ideas will always and people will kill each other for them. So is secularism truly a solution. I believe no but I think it's better than a religiously biased govt.

Suppose Pakistan becomes a secular state how will you tolerate the different religious jamaats. Will the state allow them to preach religion freely ?

Will zakat be implemented and interest be dismissed ?

    • @waqas729
      @waqas729 4 роки тому +1

If you provide full freedom to religion then there will always be people who would oppose secularism and there will always be conflicts between the state and those religious jamaats.
Say for example Turkey. Its people are muslims ( though not all of them practising but that is true in Pakistan too ) but the state is secular and there is a ministry of religious affairs now what is happening there that when the state people were not religious or religious ( with only believing in islam and not practising ) then there were jamaats and people who could not practise their religions I mean they could pray namaz and perform other obligatory things but they were not allowed to preach or read certain types of religious books even not allowing Quran in those people's houses.
On the other hand if the state people are religious like right now Erdoğan then I hope you know what is happening between the secular and Erdoğan's people.
So my thesis is that in a secular state religion can stay in mosques and only with minority that is also with the constraints that the state cant allow them to preach and practise openly otherwise there will be this conflict specially in countries like Pakistan where most of them are religious.
      Q. How do you avoid these potential conflicts if you bring secularism in a country like Pakistan where most of them are religious ?

    • @Taimur_Laal

Yeah that is the point then when you talk about secularism you have to first take away the religion, divine moral and social values and then sit and make yor own values which you can never be sure if they are useful for the soceity or not, especially for a religious soceity like Pakistan.
You know better than me that secularism is not just separating religion from the state it is taking aways " other worldly " things altogether which I think is impossible in a soceity like Pakistan where 95 - 98 percent believe in God and other world.

So I guess in your opinion, a secular system is best for Pakistan, even though it would mean the suppression/oppression of Islam in a majority Muslim country. We don't need your secularism, thank you very much.
You mentioned the religious violence that goes on in Pakistan, but you conveniently forgot what to mention that Pakistan is predominantly a secular state, it has been ruled by secular minded people like yourself sent It's Beginning for the most part. So clearly secularism does not solve the problem of religious violence within the country.

You talked about having a Secular state to ensure the equality of its citizens. I'm sorry, but this is nothing but Western secularist propaganda, which you have unfortunately accepted without questioning.
Let's do a thought experiment, shall we:
In a Secular state, would it be possible for a "religious" Head of State to pass laws based upon his religious values? The answer is NO.
In a Secular state, would it be possible for a "secular liberal" Head of State to pass laws based upon his secular values? The answer is YES.
Conclusion: A secular-liberal has more rights than a religious person in a Secular state. Therefore it can be argued that religious people are second class citizens in Secular States. That's not equality. In fact, the harsh reality is that equality is not possible under any system, whether religious or secular.

If we look back in history before the 14th century, we will see that the Catholic Church occupied most of the land in Europe. Roman Catholic Church was the strongest and influential organization of the medieval period in Europe. So powerful that if any king says anything against the Church, the Church will decree some rule, and the people would be turned against their king and overthrow their king. However, in 16th-century, people got fed up with the Church and decided to Revolt against the Church in a protest led by Martin Luther King. (the people who protested against the Church were later known as protestant).
On one side, there was reformation, and on the other side there was counter-reformation. In the 1522 century, the war between the Church and the protestant started, and that war lasted for 178 years. They fought in the whole of Europe, Central, western, northern Europe. In fact, a period came known as 30 years war, during this period the protestant and the Church fought for about 30 years from 1618 to 1648. It is said that it was the longest-running and the most exhausting war in Europe's history at that time. Many people lost their lives, there was a lot of bloodsheds, and almost around 8 million people died. After this continues fighting and exhaustion, many European countries came together. They said, let's sign an agreement, Many people at that time were with the Catholic Church like the Habsburg empire and Spain, and on the other hand, many people were with protestant Sweden Denmark Holy Roman Empire and France. France itself was Catholic but joint protestant because it hand grudges against Spain. At the end of 1648, they signed an agreement call Treaty of Westphalia. In the Treaty of Westphalia, two things were decided.
    1.No Religious wars:
They won't fight with each other in the future because of religious reasons.
    2.State affairs:
They decided that they won't interfere in each other state affairs.
Treaty of Westphalia happened in 1648, but even after that, the war and the fighting lasted for many years up to 1700 century. Finally, in the 1700 century, people accepted that they wouldn't fight with each other for religious reasons and interfere in other states affairs; thus, came the age of "Enlightenment." According to historians, the age of enlightenment started in 1715 and ended in 1785. Many great philosophers like denis Diderot, Emanual cat, Rousseau, Adam Smith, Voltaire came forward who made Europe what it is today.
    Conclusion:
The religious war that lasted in Europe for around 178 years. Provided nothing but bloodshed, misery, and loss of economic progress in Europe. But when they decided that they won't fight each other for religious causes and that they won't interfere in each other state affairs, only then Europe started to make actual progress. And after this, no other big war occurred in Europe before world war. This 200 year period Free of War in Europe resulted in great progress in social Sciences, science, literature, arts, etc. Their capitalist system expanded, and they conquered many other nations in the Middle East, North Africa, which started the period of colonialism.
On these basis secularist people, argue that, if we can tolerate each other and state on the basis of religion won't treat people differently, and that if the state doesn't have its own religion, then the people of different race and religion can live and establish peace among themselves and this type of peace we need. We need peace of 200 years to make progress in Science, literature, Arts, Social science, Humanities, etc.,

I think it is very foolhardy of an Academic to break up blocks of a chain and present a single block as having the same weight of all the blocks.
