There is no such a thing as a “secular Muslim” it’s a contradiction in terms. You can’t be a Muslim and secular.

May ALLAH ﷻ guide Ummah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to the right path so that we can be the light bearers of truth once again & can show others the way of ALLAH ﷻ. Aameen
Secularism is issue of whole ummah irrespective of countries.
These countries that we see are themselves a result of secular division of Khilafah that was the Muslim political unity/order.
May ALLAH ﷻ return Khilafah of mercy among Muslims ummah upon the way of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ & the rightly guided Caliphs ؓ.

Bangladesh since its birth was never an Islamic Country. You can find many practising Muslims here, true, but in essence it was always a secular country. From its education system to juristic system everything has been secular. The prime reason behind it is the 'liberators' of the country from the corrupt discriminating Islamic rulers were themselves corrupt discriminating seculars. And as history is written by vislctorians the bias against Islamic lifestyle has always prevailed in the country

Salaams Paul, I have always considered myself to be a “secular” Muslim without giving it much thought. Your short video has provided a very deep and thought-provoking quote that has fired up my intellect, Al'ham'du'li'laah:
“A Secular Muslim is someone who believes that the Creator was sufficient enough to set highly calculated Mathematical and Physical Laws that organise Planets in Orbit, but wasn’t sufficient enough to create laws that organise the human society.”
My initial apprehension with your quote was that it applies to me: I have always had the assumption, that I am a “secular Muslim.” However, when I pondered and reflected on your quote, I was then troubled (perhaps by the term “secular”); as a practising Muslim, I fully agree with the first half of your quote, namely:
“A secular Muslim is someone who believes that the Creator was sufficient enough to set highly calculated Mathematical and Physical Laws that organise Planets in Orbit…”
However, (fortunately) the rest of the quote does not apply to me (so, am I a “secular” Muslim?), because I firmly believe, in my heart, mind, body, soul and intellect, that:
-the Quran is the Word of God (Kalaam of Allah, Sub’ha’na’hu wa Ta’a’la)
-The Quran was applicable in the 7th Century, 610-633 AD (23 years of Revelation) as it is applicable today in 2023, as it will be applicable in a million years from today until the Day of Qi’ya’mah
-The Word of Allah (Sub’ha’na’hu wa Ta’a’la) can never be wrong, nor can it change. In the same way, that Gravity was the same in the 7th Century, as it is today in the 21st Century, as it will remain the same in the millionth century. Gravity does not change: similarly, the Word of God does not change. We as human beings and Muslims have to adapt and change to fit within the God-Given Laws. This change is difficult. The discomfort is the resistance to the Divine Will: Peace (salaam; Islam, Muslim) can only be attained when we submit our rebellious questioning will to the Divine Will. The whole purpose of hardship is so that we as feeble human beings can become extraordinary human beings. For surely, diamonds cannot be polished without friction, and character cannot be developed without trials. It was this philosophy, it was the Quran and the sterling and impeccable example (Sunnah) of the Noble and Beloved Nabi (Sal’lal’laa’hu A’lay’hi Was’sal’lam - Peace, Blessings, Mercy and Salutations be upon him), that transformed the rustic and crude desert Bedouin's from dust into diamonds. These very same Sahaba (may Allah be Pleased with them), then went on to conquer the two superpowers of their time: the Persian Empire and the Roman (Byzantine) Empire. The entire ethos of Islam is based on Justice, polished refined manners (wrapped with humility, kindness, selflessness and respect), and character (highest morals, ethics, loyalty and a steady moral compass). The same Quran with its same Laws was understood and applied by the Sahaba, and the same Laws of the Quran can be used today as well as in the future till the Final Hour, to unleash the latent potential within all of us so that we keep striving to be better human beings, through Ih’saan (excellence), and become “diamonds” - this is the duty and goal of a Muslim (Zhikr polishes the heart while love for the Prophet (Sal’lal’laa’hu A’lay’hi Was’sal’lam) with abundant Durood and Salaams, transforms us into outstanding glittering diamonds.
-Ergo, the same Creator who formulated the Laws of Gravity, Newtonian Physics, Thermodynamics, Laws of Planetary and Stellar Motions, and the Laws of Atomic and subatomic particles, including the Laws pertaining to matter, anti-matter, spirit, energy, dark energy and black matter, then that same Creator, most certainly has the Skill, Knowledge and Supreme Intelligence to formulate Laws that govern human society and that govern Mankind, irrespective of the epoch or geographical GPS coordinates in which that human being resides.
-We need to understand that the Supreme Creator, has an Infinite Intellect. We as human beings have a limited and finite intellect. It is impossible for a human being, a mere mortal with a finite intellect, mind and brain, to grasp the Infinite Intellect of a Supreme Being Who is beyond time and space and is (not was) there before-the-before (before the beginning of Time and Space, and is (not will be) there after-the-after, after the end of Time as we understand it. Similarly, the finite human intellect cannot grasp God: Who is God? Chapter 112 gives us a beautiful explanation in a few cryptic verses, but many tomes and volumes can be written on this subject. The key phrase is: “there is none like unto Him.” God does not look like a human in any shape or form and He has no anthropomorphic traits. This tells us, that even if we bring together the best brains of the world, all the architects, designers, gamers, computer experts, CAD (computer aided design graphic artists), robots, algorithms, and produce billions of different understandings or pictures or likenesses of Allah (Sub’ha’na’hu wa Ta’a’la), we will be wrong, by default. The closest understanding we can have of God is that “He is the Light of the Heaven and the Earth.” But “Light” itself is an intellectual dilemma and enigma for the human mind. What kind of a Light? Sunlight? Moonlight? UV light? Neon Light? Star Light? Fluorescent light? Biolumninescent light? Iridescent light? Shimmering Light? Laser Light? Wrong, wrong and wrong again. It is a Light that is beyond Light and beyond the understanding of the limited human intellect since there is “no likeness of Him.” Ergo, the Kalaam of Allah, the Quran, is Pristine, Pure, Impeccable, Faultless, Perfect, Sublime, Majestic and Sacred. It is no wonder that it is called the Fur’qaan: that which distinguishes between right and wrong. In simple terms, the Quran is the Book of the Future: it is the most advanced Book known to Humanity, now and forever. Islam is easy: human beings make it difficult.
In the final analysis: thank you for this thought-provoking quote which made me deeply introspective. I would now say that I am a “modern Muslim” or even a “western-influenced Muslim”, but not a “secular Muslim.” I am modern or western in the sense that I love to wear a suit and tie, I love science, knowledge, space travel, robotics, AI; I love the modern lifestyle and I love the medical, scientific and technological advances, though I am firmly anchored in my deep spiritual love for Islam, Al’ham’du’lil’laah.
I wrongly assumed that “secular” meant “modern.’ However, this was cleared up when I saw the dictionary definition:
“Secular: not connected with religious or spiritual matters.”
In this respect, “secular” refers to someone who is simply Muslim by name but not by actions and deeds. Similarly, there are many Christians who are Christians by name and not by deed. In fact, many Pew Research polls demonstrate that many people who identify as “Christian” do not go to Church, do not read the bible and do not contemplate upon religion or upon the Hereafter or upon their purpose in life.
Thank you for providing us thought-provoking ideas and inspiring life examples, such as your oft-quoted author, Gai Eaton and others.
Keep up the good work. Stay well. Salaams and warmest regards, Dr Ahmed Adam, medical doctor, South Africa

If god has no anthropomorphic traits, how come he created mankind from clay? The clay creation myth clearly anthropomorphizes divinity by not letting it say "be", but makes it use a human creative material chosen for properties that allows shapes to be made by hands or tools.
If the quran is "Pristine, Pure, Impeccable, Faultless, Perfect, Sublime, Majestic and Sacred", then how do you explain the immature verses and surahs, like surah at tahrim, surah al jinn or the don't-overstay-dinner verse?
If you're firmly anchored in your deep spiritual love for islam, what would happen to you if you understood that islam is man-made?

I will say, many of us are very religious but most of us don't really know about the reality of secularism. We are made to feel inferior by secular elite who mock us and demean us and they are constantly pushing to make our country more liberal. This year they have even added and promoted Transgenderism in our 7th class (generally 11-14 years old kids') textbooks and we did nothing. Sadly, we are not aware of the dangers of liberalism. In it, he argues that Shari'ah "is a Divine Ordinance, and as such, duly anticipates the fact of historical evolution, and confronts the believer with no more than a very limited number of broad political principles; beyond that, it leaves a vast field of constitutation-making activity, of governmental methods, and of day-of-day legislation to the ijtihad of the time concerned."

Usul al-Fiqh draw heavily from the ahadith and the custom of medinite people, not the quran istelf that is the word of God. The ahadith are not meant to be an authority in legislations. Even Umar ras prohibited the recordation and reporting of the Sunnah .
It has been narrated on the authority of `Urwah ibn al-Zubayr that when `Umar had intended to record the Holy Sunnah, he consulted the companions of the Holy Prophet, and they advised him to record. For about a month, `Umar set to seek Almighty Allah’s proper guidance in this regard. One morning, after Allah had decided for him, `Umar said,
‘I had intended to record the Holy Sunnah, but I remembered some past nations who applied themselves completely to the items they had written and, as a result, neglected the Book of Almighty Allah. By Allah I swear! I will never allow anything to interfere with the Book of Allah.’1
Yahya ibn Ju`dah narrated that after `Umar ibn al-Khattab had intended to record the Holy Sunnah, he changed his mind and distributed a missive in the countries ordering people to erase any item of the Holy Sunnah that they might have recorded

Secularism had roots in Judeo-Christian values. What you said is, I think, secularism from the perspective of Kalam or Theology since it deals with the eternality, relevance, and cohesion of God's Law (in Arabic "Shalahul Islam fi kulli zaman"). Other perspective views Secularism as a worldview in which the relevance of religion in life diminish because the Nature is desacralized and disenchanted. It had the taste of nihilistic values that later feed the Postmodernistic idea. For more perspective, I suggest you to read works of Prof. Seyyed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas: Islam and Secularism and The Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam.

A secular Muslim is the one who is a lay Muslim who thinks that Shariah needs to change with time simply because the West says so. They have more faith in the West (and its ideologies) due to its success than they have in Allah. However, as Muslims, we must believe that worldly success is something Allah has decreed for the disbelievers as this is their only Paradise. As Muslims, it is success in the Hereafter that we are after. And who would not want that success in lieu of this worldly life except a Hypocrite? A secular Muslim is that Hypocrite and some don't even hide it saying they are ex-Muslims or agnostic Muslims :)

If you enforce sharia, then where is people’s freedom to choose to do good or bad ? It diminishes their ability to act autonomously and move closer to god by resisting temptations and developing morally. In a secular/liberal societies, muslims can still choose to act in line of sharia … not because they are scared of punishment by humans, but because they want to live in line with God’s wishes. It is not about testing one's faith. Laws prescribed by Allah ﷻ are infinitely better than any man-made laws.
The idea that freedom is a priority is itself a secular concept. For many people today, they are hurled into struggles so imaginable, that practicing their faith is criminal. Rather than seeking illogical pain to one's self, the sharia is the only way to build a holistic, God-fearing society.

Examples: a secular Muslim believes in God (Allah) as the creator and the sender of the messengers to the humanity. He believes in the books of God, angels of God and the hereafter as the day of resurrection. At the same time, he doesn’t find the 5 daily Muslim prayers as compulsory! Claiming that prayers are hearty connection with God. No need to worship God with fasting during the month of Ramadan, because it’s enough for him/her to be kind to other human beings which is the objective of fasting (according to them).

My definition of a "Secular Muslim" is different. First of all, for me a _"Secular Muslim" _*_is not_*_ necessarily someone who believe that the "Creator wasn't sufficient enough to create laws that organises human society."_ Rather *_a "Secular Muslim" is a believer who believes in the separation of the Church and the State, i.e. that the State and politics shouldn't get involved in the imposition, enforcement, practice or interpretation of any particular religion and it should stay completely neutral vis-a-vis religion and religious issues and provide equal protection, safety and space to every single individual citizen irrespective of his/her religious views, persuasion or lack thereof and guarantees all his/her individual freedoms and rights, including freedom of conscience, speech, thought and the ability to practice his/her own belief or his/her own take on these issues as long as they do not obstruct other fellow citizens from doing the same._* Whether or not someone _"believes"_ that "Creator wasn't sufficient enough to create laws that organises human society" is a different issue and merely a personal view which the individual is entitled to hold.. Secularism is about the State and its laws, principles and policies and that its position should be completely neutral on any such personal or group views and beliefs. I think this is the best safeguard for all citizens - religious and non-religious alike and especially for the religious from their religion getting corrupted or hijacked by unscrupulous religious or religio-political demagogues, charlatans, fanatics, fascists, totalitarians, terrorists and by the simply wrong.

Interestingly God's laws changed even within the timespan of a single revelation (the 23 years of the Qur'an) let alone from revelation to revelation.
Lots of dogmatism in dealing with an issue that is way more complex than most would like it to be.

Yet you and others ignore the fact that MANY religious Muslim scholars, especially since the 19th century, have called for the separation of religion and politics. Who are these scholars? Google names like Mustafa Fazil (19th century), Abd-al-Rahman al-Kawakibi (died 1902), Ali Abdel Raziq (died 1966), Khalid Muhammad Khalid (1920-1996), Taha Hussein (died 1973), to name but a few. Before the 19th century, several Muslim scholars had made similar calls such as Al-Bayhaqi (994-1066), Dhiya’ al-Din Barani (c. 1285-c. 1357), and Qadi Sa’id Qumi (died 1691).
Al-Kawakibi called for the separation of religion and politics “because the vigorous nations have progressed only after isolating religious affairs from worldly affairs and turning religion into a matter of conscience only, which has nothing to do with worldly issues that operate according to the laws of nature.”
In his 1925 book Islam and the Foundations of Governance, Ali Abdel Raziq argued that “all political functions are left to us, our reason, its judgements and political principles. Religion...neither commands nor forbids [such things], it simply leaves them to us so that in respect of them we have recourse to the laws of reason, the experience of nations and the rules of politics.”
In his book From Here We Start, published in 1950, Khalid Muhammad Khalid wrote: “We should keep in mind that religion ought to be what God wanted it to be: prophecy, not kingdom; guidance, not government; and preaching, not political rule. The best we can do to keep religion clean and pure is to separate it from politics and to place it above [politics]. The separation between religion and the state contributes to keeping religion [free of] the shortcomings of the state and its arbitrariness."
What is interesting is that even in the 14th century, Dhiya’ al-Din Barani (c. 1285-c. 1357), a political thinker of the Delhi Sultanate, saw a direct clash between religion and state, stressing that religion requires the ruler lead a life of poverty and sacrifice while kingship involves a life of luxury. He concluded that "prophethood and kingship...are opposed and contradictory to each other, and their combination is not within the bounds of possibility." Persian philosopher Qadi Sa’id Qumi opined that Prophet Muhammad was “a servant-prophet, not a king-prophet.”
Wise words by great scholars who wanted to save the Muslim nation from its intellectual, moral, political, and economic crisis.

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

33:36 It is not for a believing man or woman-when Allah and His Messenger decree a matter-to have any other choice in that matter. Indeed, whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has clearly gone ˹far˺ astray.
