I think people definitely stop introductions too soon because it looks scary or someone is getting 'picked' on. When in reality it is just guinea pigs communicating and working out their order. I know I have done intros where I hate to see lunges or face offs but you have to see how far they will go. Sometimes all it takes is a few lunges for them to decide they are happy with the arrangements.

Yes, this is SO me. Anthropomorphosing the guinea pigs. I was watching Minnie's introduction video on Little Adventure's channel, and kept thinking "oh no, it's like they are a gang, and jumping her in! She sounds so distressed! They keep bullying her! No way I can get guinea pigs now; it's too scary!" But, sure enough, all's well, and I see the proper "whys" we must give them time and space to be guinea pigs.

I definitely get now why it wasn't bad or scary. It was totally me being an overreacting nutcase, because I didn't understand it, yet.

skinnypigs1 I followed your instructions with bonding piggies, and have been really successful! Even when they are bonded, as you say in your videos, they can still teeth chatter at times, but as long as it’s not going on too long, it’s okay. You guys both, you and Scott, have taught us so much, and you, Skinnypigs1, have been my golden standard of care that I follow. Thank you both, and Saskia at LA Guinea Pig Rescue, for helping us guinea pig lovers, and taking time to teach, so these precious little laughter and joy-inducing bundles of love can get the care they deserve!! I find myself helping others with what I have learned from all of you. It’s overwhelming at first to try to understand what the piggies truly need, get a routine going, be able to read your piggies’ signs and language, etc. you guys have been out life jacket, and now our ship!! 🐹I am just kind of worried, hoping my piggies defy all odds and live long lives, lol. How long is the average lifespan in your opinions, of healthy piggies? Scott, I’m not trying to be rude to you by commenting to skinnypigs1 on your video!! You are both so awesome! Thank you for showing us Timmy’s bath video too!!! His little face!!

My bonding experience with my two girls went very bad. It was a fluffy tornado! I separated them as fast as I could and turns out one guinea pig went for others throat and there was blood. After that I’ve been too scared to try again so they just neighbors.

SO much different from bonding boys. Girls chase and lunge for hours and then calm down like nothing ever happened. Boys never stop if they don't like their introductions. And I liked what you said about not getting our emotions involved in the bonding process. Whenever I do a playdate, I always tell the potential adopters that what they see may be scary to them, or even disturbing. I assure if I suspect that the pair is a threat to each other, that I will separate when necessary, and I talk them through the process. I tell them what rumblestrutting is, and gently remind them that guinea pigs have their own way of sorting out differences when they get worried.

I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I'm in the process of bonding my 2 rescue girls with my newest girl. There's been lunges, teeth chattering, mounting and chasing but this video was so reassuring to know that it's all standard behaviour. Of course I'm still watching over them but I can see a successful bonding for them.
    Love your videos!

Yeah my friend came over to see my guinea pigs and went into full blown anaphylaxis almost and she didn't even touch or pick up my guinea pigs. She didnt know she was allergic...we thought it might of been the hay and turns out her allergy to guinea pigs and rodents was severe when she went to get an allergy test after that. It was crazy she had to go to the hospital.

We have four boy pigs, tried to bond them all a while ago, 2 babies and 2 a bit older. Nope, now they live 2 and 2. Our one bossiest pig made life miserable for the others in a foursome, but with just one buddy he's a lot more chilled out. Fun times!

Awwww, they are sooo sweet. Goes to show that the ladies do work things out. I just bonded four girl piggies. My two dominant girls did have some issues at first. It was tough to see and hear. I slept beside the cage for a week. But they did work it out and they are devoted to each another. A captain and her number #1 so amazing to see.

I have a very dark brown guinea pig I thought she was male at first her name was count chocula but once her nature became apparent and her gender I renamed her Countess Bathory. She's really ornery. I had to put her in a separate cage. They can rub noses but she can't attack. I have pitbulls that are scared to death of her. I wear welding gloves to clip her nails. She's healthy not in pain, she's been examined. Even the vet said that is one mean guinea pig.

Blondie and Rocky aren't the biggest fan of orchard grass. My hubby is allergic to Timothy as well, so I tried some orchard grass to try to relieve his sniffles, and no one would touch it. When I mixed it with Timothy, they would eat it, but their poops got smaller and softer because orchard grass is not quite as fibrous as Timothy. Julie was telling me they need to adjust to it, :)

We just went through an into on Monday. Went from 4 to 5 girls. One of the calmest intros we've ever done. Just one more to go. We have a boy we're getting neutered so he can join the ladies. He was mis-sexed at the rescue. We were going for all girls. But We love him and he so wants to be part of the group. Went through a ton of research and are going to the best exotic vet in our area. I'm still nervous, but he is clearly unhappy alone.

Interesting. I keep seeing vids on how difficult it can be to introduce new GP into existing herd but I haven't had that problem.
About 2 months ago, I, welcomed and introduced 2 girls into my existing trio of girls and had no problem at all. Guess I was lucky. Although, I should note that I made sure to there was a ton of space for them to run around and also placed several 2-way
hideys so they can run/hide/escape if needed (wouldn't feel cornered/trapped) which causes the reaction fight and/or flight.
To date, my herd of girls is doing great, each knows their rank. At any rate, good luck and continue making informative GP vids to educate others with less knowledge about GPs.

Hey Scott! I love your videos and they are a lot of help. I am in somewhat of a predicament. I have two young female guinea pigs that get along very well. I want to introduce a third due to the outstanding results of having females in threes. There is a beautiful adult female around the age of two at my local shelter and I think she would be a great addition to the group as well as a good role model to my other guineas that don’t hand feed yet. Is this a good idea? And how long should I give the New Guinea in a separate cage before I introduce her to the babies? Thanks!

That went much better than my bonding did a couple weeks back! I had 3 pairs and a single to go together, one pair was from pretty cramped and stressful place though they only had one and a half ears each.. the more dominant one decided to rip hair out and throw the others on their backs. So I have a happy herd of 5 rather than 7. The other 2 are much happier with each other and able to see the other 3 the other side of the room so it all worked out in the end!
Our little baby bites at the moment, poor thing has a cyst/abscess on her ear we have to keep gently squeezing out which she isnt happy about, but thats getting better :)

The only alternative was to have the ear removed but as it's not actively infected its not causing much issue 🙂 I introduced 2 new babies to the herd this week so she's no longer the baby of the group! She's very much enjoying having companionship after spending so long alone at the place I got her.

minimum 8 sq ft, like a midwest or a C&C even better. girls do great in 3's. 2 can be tricky if they don't love each other. Keep trying unless there is real biting or hair clumps. Many experts are commenting, too!

They seem to ignore each other and when they do go near each other it seems to be lots of chasing and squeeking! I know this is a dominance behaviour. But how long should we let it last. There doesn't seem to be any major fighting going on that we have seen, small nicks in the nose of one but not serious! Any advise would be great on how long we should give them to sort it out?

As long as there are no major injuries Let It Go on as long as it needs to some pigs will squabble always. That is the main thing how harmonious is it and remember to think in terms of guinea pigs not humans

Hi Scotty what wood bedding did I see in the video? I am new and I read pine is no good. Thanks. Please tell me where to buy them.

Kiln-dried Pine is okay. It should say kiln-dried and be intended for small animal bedding. Never Cedar. Aspen is okay but not as soft

Hi Scotty, I realize this is an old video but I do have a question that I very much hope you can answer. I adopted 2 pairs of girls. Long story short, I committed to the adoption of a 7year old and a 2 year old. I knew the 7 year old was not going to live much longer and decided to adopt 2 other girls (both 2 years) for the purpose of being bonded with the 2 year old so she wasn't ever alone once the 7 year old passed.
The lady that gave me the 7 and 2 year old bought a brand new cage for them so that we could have neutral territory for them to meet. I loaded it with hay for burrowing in case they wanted to hide out. I put in a bunch of romaine so they could be busy and happy when they met. Then introduced all 4 simultaneously.
Squirrel is the dominant of the 2, 2 year olds. And she has been not super nice to anyone, including her cage mate paprika.
I think honestly what they are doing is normal. Squirrel is all up in everyone's butt. She is rumble strutting. No chunks of fur that I have seen. I did however put a divider in after several hours because my golden girl, Frankie (7) was acting a little stressed out and squirrel wouldn't leave her alone.
I am wondering because of Frankie's age would it be best to just leave them side by side until Frankie passes? Or do you think it would be ok to let them work it out? My only concern really is causing stress on such an old gal.

I recently tried to introduce a new guinea pig in my herd. However one of them started fighting, I know that is normal, but she started to draw blood to one of my pigs. I had them in cages next to each other for a couple weeks. I don't know what to do now. My new one is very dominant and so is one of my other one. Im scared my new one wont be able to merge into my herd.

What if there is a little hair pull between to girls. I'm trying to bond mine and I seen some hair pull one is pregnant I rescued her that way. Should I wait till after the baby's are born??

Oh no I'm sorry that you are allergic to timothy hay! That's very unfortunate. My mom is too and always has to wear gloves when she pet sits for me to do the hay so I know it's common.

Hi Scotty. Does it matter what age girls are for bonding? Or can girls be added to a herd at any age? How long should you wait to know that all will be okay to leave them alone? Thanks 🙂

I really wanted to keep them together as herd but my poor aby is always crying and 1 of the Americans humps and nose punches her im starting to think they are both biting her have found scab like marks on her skin and they constantly kick her out of her hidey despite them each having their own. What should I do??? 🥺

What if I got a brand new baby and the other one is older and is already trying to take over but the baby can’t run away because she either can’t push the house up and run or she can’t find a hole to get through

And I put my hand in front of the more older one and she accidentally bit me on accident instead of the other one and now I have a tiny tear in my skin so I don’t know if I should put the baby back in

2x4 is fine for 3 sows but that's minimum, more space is better!

Are you going to get allergy shots to build up your resistance to hay because you cannot eliminate the hay from your life.
