    I still find nail clipping to be an "all hands on deck" chore...no matter how many times I do it I lack the confidence - especially on those back paws! I swear it looks like I'm going into surgery...all the lights on, my son as the nurse to hand off towels, veggies, clippers, I even dust off my reading glasses for this task. :D

  • @bunberrier

    Yep.... I dread this. I use a helper ( daughter ) to hold them. For the black nails, I use a trick I learned from a dog nail video. Clipped black nails have a grey colour in the exposed cut part. Clip a bit, look at the end of the nail, and look for a black dot in the middle of the clipped end. If you dont see one, clip a bit more. When you see the dot, stop. The dot indicates the quick is not far from it. This makes extra work, but to our credit in several years of clipping 4 pigs Ive only generated a drop of blood perhaps twice. Still hate that job with a passion because Im fearful of causing them pain. Plus they hate it inspite of bribes, petting, and soft talking.

    I really like that you've filmed a this even though you struggle, it makes us feel better when we struggle. It's also nice to see that my guinea pig isn't the only one to yell (weak) while having nails clipped.

    Scott I've found the easiest way and safest way to clip their nails is with a Pedi-Paw. Basically it's a pet branded drum sander. It works so well and gentle that you can let it touch your skin for a sec and it doesn't hurt. I use my fingers and finger nails as a stopper so the sanding drum will start sanding my fingers before it sands thier nails to far. It's also faster in my opinion and while the sound is scary to them it's not loud.
    There is a plastic safety guard that covers the drum just take it off and throw it away. The safety guard is for dogs but even with dogs it's easier to use it without the guard. Only caution would be with long haired guinea pigs because their hair (or yours) could get caught in the drum. Please consider using this because it's sooooo much better and easier. You can find the Pedi-Paw in any pet store or Walmart for $20 to $35.

    • @bunberrier
      @bunberrier 5 років тому

      Just want to add one thing in case some DIY scientist decides to use a Dremel for this purpose... NOT THE SAME!. The difference is in the level of heat generated in the work. The Pedi Paw is slow and weak by design.

    I think Nate did great for it being his 1st time....he sure was vocal but that probably wasn't from fear but more like him saying "what the heck are you doing to me man!" I only have 1 easy piggy to clip but she's older so she is used to it. My other 4 go WILD like I'm trying to kill them LOL. Thanks for another great advice video, I love how you want to make sure we can really see exactly what you're doing instead of just telling us how to.

    Hi Scotty, my piggy Kleve was so scared of having his nails clipped he used to cry and jump, pulling his foot/paw away before l had even done anything, so l know l hadn't hurt him! One time it took three of us to cut them - one holding , one cutting and one with the grass! I have not even tried with my new rescue piggy's yet, who I've had for about 7wks. But I feel more confident since watching you struggle Scot!

    Thank you Scotty... I know this is an older video but I'm still new at this and anything I can learn, I am trying to. I've made my piggies bleed every time I've clipped their nails... about 3 times now. I did try using a high table of sort, similar to what Saskia does, to do my last boar cleaning and it worked much better than anything else I've tried. So I'm going to do that the next time I do nail clipping and see if it helps. She is so comfortable with everything. Maybe if I do this for 20 years I'll get that good too. If I'm not 6 feet under (I'm 66 y/o). 😆

    Looks like me trying to trim nails. I don't know how Saskia does it, I don't have her mojo either!! And that one little curvy nail on the front paw is so hard to get! Maggie makes a little fist, so I first have to uncurl her tiny 👊 then line up the trimmers and wiggle wiggle squirm LOL ugh, try again. The more often you do it tho, the more practice you get, the calmer they get and the quick draws back as well making the next trim easier. That poor little one.....you'd think you were murdering him.

I use a cat nail clipper-works better for me. I have styptic powder pads from Drs Foster & Smith. Also, flour works well. I have had my share of mistakes and they just bleed so much!! mm the best way for me is to sit in a tiny stool so my knees are 90º or less to my torso. okay, then i put the pig spooning your body, its back leaning fully over my chest and stomach. sitting there at my lap, like a tiny potato, peacefully. now give it grass or veggies to eat,not too big something it can chew without loosing it because of its weigth, and take its tiny paws and cut carefully with a nail clipper.obviously Gpig must be accustomed to sit like that short periods of time without stressing out.

    I recently brought in a new pig from a shelter and her quick is fairly long on all her toes. How do I go about bringing that back so her nails are shorter?

      You can't. I had a piggy with the same issue once. She didn't have trouble with it though, never broke off a nail in her 6 years. All you can do is keep them as short as possible without cutting too far

      If you cut them as short as possible without hitting the quick, it is said by many that the quick retreats over time. IDK if that is true. Its just lore as far as I know. If its safe to do so I have heard of people putting the top of their piggies enclosure on a concrete porch, so as they walk around they abraid their nails naturally. I cant try this where I live because red shouldered hawks are all over the property.

    I have a question, I have Abyssinian pigs and their nails are more hairy, will that be a problem?
    Also I’m laughing because my pig Peanut can hear Nate whimpering and she started wheeking and rumble strutting- then Sock started screaming and running around. Their about the same size as Nate, I’m surprised- Sock is so much louder than him, and Peanut is so much more quiet and behaved. I’m not exited to cut their nails tomorrow.

    I have one guinea pig with all white nails, and she isn't squirmy so it is simple to cut her nails. My other guinea pig has darker nails and i can't really see the quick (the front ones are easier to see). I would guess her previous owner never cut the back ones because they were long when I got her (she bites her nails so they don't curl in the back). I got her 7 months ago and I only trim the back ones down the tiniest bit when its time to cut their nails, and they are very long compared to my other guinea pigs back nails, and I'm not sure if the quick grows so idk if I should cut them down to the same length as my other piggies...could anyone give me any tips on cutting the back ones? (The front ones are regularly cut by me, so they are as short as my other piggies nails)
