    Interesting mate, thanks for your vid, I have a Isuzu diesel Ute that now sits retired and mostly dormant under the house thankfully now I have a wonderful Atto and I had a similar problem with it failing to start when I was using fast phone chargers. If I had my phone and iPad charging from my 12 volt system it dropped the start voltage so much the starting circuit would not engage due to perceived low voltage. Of course unplugging instantly resolved the issue took me quite a few embarrassing RACQ call outs and a bit of online forum sleuthing to sus this one out any way my Atto not missed a beat since purchase, it’s just coming up to 5 k service no issues to mention so far good solid well built car.

      I feel exactly the same. Love our Llewelyn despite the rather weak charging cycles of the 12v battery.
      We've already travelled to the southeast of WA several times and are always reminded how nice it is to drive. You know, now that you mention it, I think I was also charging up phones and action cameras the night before we had our flat battery. With proper care and attention we might just middle through.

    Great video and faultless research. I often sit in the car and use the stereo and screen for movies and have not had a battery issue yet. I assume I am providing a large enough draw on the battery that the traction battery needs to charge the 12v battery.

      G,day, you'll find that the 12v battery is being constantly charged (from the traction battery) whilst you are watching those videos as the car must be in the 'on' state. Having said that, I've been told there is a way to set the car to an 'accessory' mode but I haven't confirmed it myself yet. As soon as I'm back with the car, I'll let you know.

    Very easy for 12V battery to die.
    Thank you for letting viewers know and hopefully find ways to avoid a flat 12V

    Sorry for a stupid question - your video is long and I saw the end (someone said at a Atto 3 forum that I should).. so I see that the BYD finally charges the 12v battery - did you have to do anything in order for it to do so? We got stuck one time already because of this and my wife (who was driving at the time) didn’t forget anything turned on what she can remember..
    Is that what you imply? That it should work itself out if you don’t mess up? :)

    • @evtorque
      @evtorque  Рік тому +1

      Well, I can't be absolutely certain yet but it seems if you are leaving the car for any length of time (even overnight) then all must be off and locked up. We used to leave ours unlocked as we have pretty tight garage security but now we always lock the car and remove the solar smart charger. If all is left as it should be and you have charge in your traction battery then yes, it appears it should pretty much look after itself. As shown in the video, 5 mini-charge cycles & test at or below 12.2v will trigger the charge up to 13.8v.
      I'm going to set up the time-of day-charging in the Atto 3 to only look for a charger well into the day. That way we should be able to leave it connected as the car won't look for it until it can provide the charge its looking for.
      Cheers.

      Further to my last response I thought I should add: ... We found ourselves in a similar situation in our Outlander PHEV. The battery setup seems very similar. We had sat at the drive-in happily listening to the radio and the monitor I was using at the time showed a steady slide so we ended up using a phone as our drive-in radio. Sometime later, when we had already purchased Llewellyn, we had a full flat in the PHEV. We'd parked it in the backyard until we were ready to sell it and what do you know? ... 4volts! same as our recent flat in the EV! I'm pretty sure all we had was a single light on for a while. Once again, can't be sure. After we had that recharged, we connected a tricke charger for the next 2 weeks it was in the backyard and all was good.

    This video inspired me to fit a battery monitor. I was shocked at what I saw! Whilst idle and off, the car was continuously trying to charge the battery and showing 13.7v for 2 hours. Then a sudden drop to 10.9v whilst not charging for exactly 30 mins, then would resume continuous charging at 13.7v for another 2 hours, followed by 30 mins at 10.9v, and so on.
    If you turn the car ON to drive it, the charging at 13.7v continues for the duration of the drive, then as soon as you put the car to OFF the 2 hour cycle starts.
    If you granny charge it, same behaviour... continuously charges the 12v battery at 13.7v until the main battery is full and granny charger stops, and then the 2 hour cycle starts.
    I'm assuming I have a bad battery. It's booked in for 18th April for them to take a look.
    You would think they could build in some kind of "Check 12v battery" software notification based on this pattern, right? If I hadn't installed this monitor, I would have had no idea of any problems because the car seems perfectly fine. I wonder how many others in same position but don't know it?
    Happy to send you screen shots of my graphs if you want to see an example of what a bad battery looks like, but not sure how to get in touch? I'm in the various BYD Facebook groups maybe you can find me there. Thanks.

      Thanks for this feedback and info. Good on you for installing a battery monitor. Almost all EV models have had similar reports so being aware of the battery condition means you can be pro-active in getting it checked BEFORE you get into a tight spot. What you've described is similar to what I had seen prior to the recent Atto 3 software updates. Please make sure your software is current. The 2 hour cycle however does sound like you are post-update so as you've suggested your battery may be on the low-side. 10.9v is low-ish but not too low to start the car. Charging at 13.8v is just the beginning. If you start with a low charge, you'll have to charge up for longer (sorry for the egg-sucking lesson). Also, do you have anything that might be loading the battery more than standard such as a Dash-cam in parking mode? Right now, my car is sitting at 12.6v after 19 hrs idle since our last drive. I'm presently testing the effect of having the BYD granny plugged in but not turned on. The video will also compare the previous graphs from before the software updates. If you'd like to share your graphs, please post a screenshot and send me the link within these comments. A site like imgr.com works well or Google Photos. I am not on Facebook but am on the Whirlpool Forums as SlyFred. I'm active on the BYD General Discussion thread here: forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9kpyqxml
      Cheers.

    Good work Sly, those lows down to 9V is very low, even for headlights on, in fact I reckon it's close to the voltage that an ICE would use for a starter motor. I haven't seen an Atto 3, but does it have a very small 12V battery, are the cables going from the battery to the DC-DC charger small gauge ? I also wonder though what the cause of your 4V situation was, as most modern cars will turn off the internal lights even if left on...and also given the graphs consistency you'd think the charger should have kicked in...more research needed ! 🤠😎

    • @evtorque
      @evtorque  Рік тому

      Agreed! More research needed. I feel we've nailed the trigger for what I'm terming the 'Internal Charge' as I can't bring myself to keep calling it 'Self-Charging'. But the reasons behind those other issues are still a mystery. I have seen the lights causing a fast drain but I agree, the lights should turn off eventually. I'll report back what I find. As far as the connection to the DC converter I can't tell you as I haven't traced the wiring ... yet. Thanks for your input.

      The battery monitor I'm using is called the Ultimate9 BM & purchased at a Auto Pro shop. It and similar bluetooth models are available online. This model has battery leads that can connect directly to the battery and the unit itself tucks away into the fabric of the battery cover. I don't receive any kick-backs for mentioning this product. You can setup charging start and stop time in Atto 3. Right? If I overnight set time: start charging at 23:00 and end charging at 7:00. And lock the car, leave the charger connected so it can start charging at 23:00 and go to sleep. Car will be fine? Or I will have the similar (battery) situation like you mentioned in your video?
    Thanks for the video by the way and all the tips you have 🙂

      Thanks heaps for the feedback. I'm sorry to say I've just this evening proved the same situation happened with the Reservation Charging enabled. I've posted the battery monitor graphs on the Whirlpool Forum site. It makes little sense to me as I expected the car to be sleeping until the start time. The checking or dialogue is still happening but deeper and for longer periods than normal. The pattern looks exactly the same as when a non active charger is connected. I'll post that link for in a following comment. I think it's time to raise this with BYD. Having said all that, being aware of the issue and monitoring the voltage I'm confident of not having any more flattening experiences. Cheers.

      Here's the link to tonight's sad experience. I've included trend lines to show the direction the volts were heading before I disconnected the inactive carving cable. Also I found a disclaimer starting that if non BYD chargers were used they won't cover for loss of energy or damage.

      @@evtorque thanks for this. We only use the BYD-supplied granny charger. My partner switched it off at the wall yesterday but didn't remove plug from car, and it sat like that for a couple of hours. I was a bit shocked when I got home and saw it like that - thinking the worst (my partner's not up with all this discussion about 12volt battery issues and wasn't to know...). Thankfully the car started just fine, but are you aware of any issues with the BYD granny charger being left in an "off" state for extended period?

    • @evtorque
      @evtorque  Рік тому +2

      @@benjohnson5897 Hi and thanks so much for this question as I believe it has been on the minds of many.
      First of all, the good news. A software update has corrected the main issues we were seeing with the poor maintenance cycle of the 12v aux battery. That is not to say there won't be any further problems but I'm confident after tracking the charge cycles that things are much better now. I would have liked to provide a video earlier than this but rest assured one is on the way, I will directly compare the charging charts so everyone can see how well BYD has managed the fix. The specific case of leaving a charger connected but switched off has other implications now for some chargers but I can't be certain yet of the BYD granny charger. What I saw after the update is that the car now has to be in control of the charge. So, with a solar-aware charger that is set to start charging as soon as solar is available, we now have a potential issue. I have the answer and will provide that in the upcoming video. Thanks again for you question and keep enjoying your Atto 3. Regards, Sly
