  • A Hybrid (Deep Cycle) battery replaces the underperforming 12 volt unit in our BYD Atto3. This unit is physically larger and requires a little work to get it installed. Watch this video to see how easy it really is.

If you add a zip tie to the rear ‘rod’ you can ensure it won’t drop down through the hole in the base if you disconnect the bracket for whatever reason … good video

Please follow up with a video showing the performance of the new unit using your monitor data would be really interesting…..have replaced my 12v with an equivalent century unit but would love to see your data . Cheers

I've now got the Battery Monitor Graphs of the new battery in several scenarios. Now to put it all together - video coming, thanks.

Great video Sly. I notice the plastic box/frunk. Is that a Bunnings box? If so, what size is it. Maybe a quick video on it as well...

Ha! Yes you got it. There was some talk on the forums about a different Bunnings box but the end result was it just did not fit very well. Reason is, they all tried an east-west fit. This one is North-south with the addition of some firm foam strips. The final mod was to shave the rear lip of the lid, so that one just has to lift the front of the lid's lip and pull forward and there it is! Ok, I'll do a video.

Thanks for that. It looks like a worthwhile addition.

Hey mate just wanted to say I have followed your video and have also installed the exact same battery using the same battery clamp.
I found that I didn't need to use shims at all, the connectors fit very nicely around the terminals.

Well, that explains why I had to use a sizable screwdriver to open the clamps. Mind you, they were very secure after that! Shims were fitted by Travis at the store, so maybe he saw it a bit either way and erred on the safe side. I'll pass this on to him for future reference. Cheers, Sly.

Hi. Interesting video. I replaced the lead acid original battery from our Atto 3 over a year ago, with a LiFePo4 battery of about 30A capacity. It's worked faultlessly and I keep a check with the battery monitor and it's just a flat line of over 12V all the time.

That's great to hear. The lower charging volts compared to what a Lithium would normally use might end up with a less than fully charged battery. But still would offer great performance especially in our situation. It will be interesting to hear how long a lifespan this will give you as there are various opinions on this. Personally, I think the doubts come from situations where cranking is required, so I think you've got a good setup. Did you find one at a good price or did you go for one of the $$$$$$ units?

I think I would also go the LFP route due to more charging cycles. What brand and model number did you use?

I think you could happily do a LiFe battery - it would just always sit at around that 13.8V which is about 3.45V per cell in a 4S configuration. That's close enough to fully charged as not to matter. A 100Ah 4S would be perfect. That should give you roughly 1200W available for things like power steering and the wipers.

Yes, I agree however LiFe at this price point did not seem to offer quality packaging. I do think that would potentially be a better solution, the simplest for most people is an off-the-shelf solution whilst still encompassing a move toward deep cycle rather than cranking. I'm happy to be proven wrong and that good quality low cost yet robust LiFe packages are now a thing.
