I am owning my BYD Dolphin since 4 months and after already 11,000 km I am very happy with the car. I also have the impressions, that the sensors/software is too sensitiv (phantom breaking) in some conditions.
If you're coming from older cars without the so called half baked ADAS system, this phantom braking & steering locking does affect most cars with such system. A colleague of mine had a accident in a brand new Japanese car as a result of phantom braking & steering locking when he couldnt maneuver. Firstly the sudden hard braking out of the blue caused the vehicle behind him to rear-end his car & the impact shot his car forward into on coming traffic lane. He couldn't maneuver his steering following in rear impact as the steering was locked. Only after the car came to a stopped on the opposite lane can the steering be turned. The ADAS system detected him trying to cut lanes without signalling thus prevented him from turning! Fortunately he was not hit by oncoming traffic. I too had experienced phantom braking with a few rented cars when I forgot to turn the ADAS system off.

Hi, your channel has been a good source of info also being quite a big influence in my purchase of atto3 in nov16 2023 Having said that I’ve done road trips of 3600+ Kms round trip across deserts and heavy wind conditions. Passed 10k Kms on the 37th day of purchase and currently at 10600+ Kms Pushed it to 1% while beating the km range stats that was displayed !!! Great vehicle and of course awaiting the release of updates in uae Cheers and keep posting !
Nice im just about to book my 40000km service having owned the car since last June. They are so great for 200 - 350km daily use. Most I've done is 1200 km in 2 days with a single charge lunch break each day. Worked great but I would like to see towns with more than one charger as not much redundency in case of fault. Early days though
Great review! I've had my Atto 3 for 12 months now too and I love the car. It's been far better than I expected. The gimmicks... Spot on! 😂 I never rotate the screen, but I do love that I can use the voice assistant to control fans and climate when Apple Car Play is on. It means I don't have to swipe up and fiddle with the on screen buttons while driving. Those guitar strings are what I probably hate the most... Especially when I have my young nieces and nephews in the car. 🎸 🎸
The dealer told me that the one pedal function will be available in a few months. However, there is no news regarding the increase in charging power beyond 85 KW; VolksWagen did it via software on ID3 taking it from 85 KW to 115 KW.
I find rotating the screen to vertical really handy sometimes when using the navigation. If you are wearing polarising sunglasses though the screen goes to black. Phantom braking does add some excitement to the drive. I've learn't to cover the accelerator pedal when using cruise control so if braking does occur I can just stamp on the pedal to over ride it. When it most often happens to me is when I'm reversing down my driveway about 2 cm away from the fence. Changing the tyres to Sport Contact 7's made a big difference to the grip on the road
My Suzuki Vitara with all ADAS functions does the ‘phantom braking’ thing when overtaking too. It seems it’s not limited to electric vehicles. Anything with advanced ADAS functions seems to do something similar. Great review. Looking at either the Atto3 or MGZS EV… Some really good info here. Thanks heaps. I think this has helped make my decision.
Thank you for the creative presentation. This car was on top of my list for my next EV. But display software is also important. So I look for thoroagh software feature reviews... As well as the gimmicky bells and whistles that make a car unique. I know this car was modelled around a gym equipment theme... But as a flight enthusiast it gives me a bit of retro cockpit vibes, which is why I gravitate to this model. I'll watch your prior videos to see if I can find a more comprehensive software review. Great video😊
Well honestly the stock software version for ME was fine, just that it didn’t have wireless Apple connect etc. but after V1.1 update for ME it become glitchy. A/C doesn’t go off!! Etc etc issues !!! And the voice commands just don’t seem as efficiently picked up by the car as before !! There’s a video about the current ongoing glitchy BYD atto3 software on UA-cam
Also, one of the significant software updates improved the charging and maintenance of the 12v auxiliary battery. Another was improving the Smart Charging ie, how it dealt with smart solar chargers. yet another was the Pedestrian warning sound became less intrusive. Great vid, thanks.
You can control temperature and fan speed with three-finger-movements directly to the screen. Two fingers stationary and one moving vertically or horizontally to activate either function. (I discovered this entirely by accident 😅)
Very nice video. Definitely would love actual dials for HVAC like my Mazda 3 or Nissan Pulsar. Wish they created a cheaper model with that. Very informative video. Keep up the good work.
This autonomous braking system when you edge too close is a feature of other cars too like my VW. However it is only active below 40 km. I have found it to be useful and have always activated in the correct situation, even if I know I will stop in time.
Thanks for making the video ED. You made me laugh so much with the gimmicks. Very helpful the 'swipe up'. I didn't know that. Yes, reconfiguring that wheel on the centre console would be a great idea.
If you're stoked about the wheel cam view - you should check out any of the eGMP platform models. They have a 360 camera system that shows left and right wheels simultaneously + birds-eye view (works for both front and rear depending on which gear you're in) so you don't curb them on either of the 4 corners. really helpful when you need to pass really narrow passages or parking close to a curb. the front view comes up automatically when you're approaching an obstacle / tight space, too.
I wish u could say more about charging behaviour of BYD. I own an EV in India and it has a very limited charging pattern. So would love to hear from you abt how BYD charging pattern works
The wife likes the extra volume control on the centre console, easy for her to turn down the radio when she wants to talk to me. Yeah, having it as a fan speed control might be nice. :) (yes, I know she can always say Hi BYD)
The door handle is better than the model 3. There are 2 door opening method. One is the press buttom. Which is very confusing for folks not familiar with the car. The other is the physical lever. Which intend for you to bail out while the press buttom fail. Ive been told using the lever too often will ruin your window seal.
I was thinking at one point speeding up and not maintaining that 3 second distance between yourself and the car infornt of you eventually you will need to Che k the mirrors and shoulder check. Imagine that's at the split second the car I front of you has to put on their breaks hard
Great review as always. I have also enjoyed watching your "snow video" with the Atto 3. We also own an Atto 3 in Germany since December 23. Since it is a LHD version it has other ADAS calibration and I am actually quite satisfied with it especially after the 1.4 update (which would bei the 1.6 in Australia as far as I know). The heating has been improved after the 1.5 update (I don't know the corresponding Australian software version however). I cannot recognize any phantom braking at all, maybe the European software also differs from the Australian one at that point, or I just have different driving behavior which helped me to avoid the phantom brakings without knowing it. 😄The traffic sign recognition is still trash though, it tells me I should drive 30 on a highway with sped limit of 130 km/h, therefore I have been ignoring the traffic sign consequently, hopefully BYD also improves the traffic sign recognition. I also love the suspension and steering. It does not differ much from the german cars we have driven before, but it only applies to the European version of Atto 3. However it seems that BYD removed the dashcam function in the European version, since it is controversial in context with the data protection laws in several countries. 🤔

Love the following: - V2L - Cheap electricity prices. Looking forward to: - taking it to the snows like you did (perisher?) and having hotpot for lunch
I spent a long time comparing the the Atto 3 and the Model Y as we are planning to get a second car (currently have a Model Y) these were the pros and cons I came up with during all my test drives with the BYD, I would love it for some of these to be wrong (or maybe they fixed them?) as I would love to save a bit of money and go with the BYD. BYD CONS: No phone key, have to use a physical key (and you only get 1, $400 for an extra) Terrible tires (borderline unsafe in the wet) (decent tires are about $1800) No per person seat/wheel/mirror position memory No automatic driver profiles No support for multiple spotify (or any media) accounts Less power/performance The doors are heavy and low to the ground. Some people have trouble opening and closing. No digital childlocks Mirrors don't aim down when reversing Front wheel drive (feels worse to drive, you get torque steering when accelerating, less controllable) Worse lane centering/cruise control, felt very unreliable Much much less storage No real one pedal driving No semi-automatic indicators No always on dash cam (sentry mode) Barely any functionality from the phone app (looks like it might have been improved) Requires actual servicing (I asked what they did, basically nothing + some filters) 80 kw p/h max charge speeds (Teslas are over 200 kw p/h) Doesn't handle as well when driving, a bit touchy and jumpy both in braking and accelerating. Can't limit the height of the auto open boot by location Infotainment system is awful, software overall is terrible More reliability issues (still not too bad compared to other cars, but the common structural rust issues are concerning) Built in navigation is bad, satellite connection is spotty. Stuck using third party chargers, not able to use the Tesla charger network Speakers are pretty bad Less real world range than a similar Tesla Can't change the volume of the indicators, they are stupidly loud (This looks like it was adjusted in an update) ADAS is basically broken. BYD PROS: 20% cheaper than a new Tesla Android auto support Built in 240v powerpoint Has an OEM heads up display.
I am a model 3 driver and one pro I would add to the atto is 360 degree birds eye view. Why on earth Tesla do not have this is just beyond me. I agree byd has a long way to go but I think they will close the gap in coming years. I think they are also further down the track with home power storage integration from the car but I don’t know if that is a functioning option yet. I think the byd seal can be hooked up to the house power system somehow but could be wrong.
@@andrewmee8136 I have used both for parking and the Tesla's high quality tri cam view is soooooooooo much better than BYD's low quality 360 cam view. And yeah if you look at my comment I mentioned the power sharing as a pro for the BYD.
FYI: Try BYD OPEN THE WINDOW... Where you are that exactly window will OPEN... example your sitting on Driver or Passenger side... Seat and tell again... Also you can set Aircon in voice command. Tell BYD set aircon temperature to 22 degrees.
Nice summary. I haven’t had a problem with headrest other than having to wipe off some hair product from time to time. Am a bit triggered by seeing the tailgate opening sticker. That was one of the first things to go.
Thanks Ed. Absolute ripper! We have an Atto 3 and think it is quite extraordinary in general. Things I really dislike are the guitars rather than having a proper usable door drink holders instead. The drinks holders are always too small except for a cup of coffee. The Qi charging is very hit and miss. The original tyres are atrocious but easily replaced with decent rubber such as Continentals. Biggest gripe is no real Tesla like one pedal driving which should be included and be switchable so those who do not like it or want such an aggressive regen. This could be user selectable. For me, it's a huge miss not to have one pedal driving. Otherwise, until maybe a Zeekr SUV or the BYD Song L becomes available, I am very happy.
Finding out that BYD don’t offer one pedal driving was a deal breaker for me for their entire range. Some of the other quirks in their cars were hit or miss but I could learn to live with them but having owned a Tesla for nearly 4 years EVs now have to offer one pedal driving.
A comment on the BYD's door compared to the Toyota. Sure, the BYD's door might keep the area immediately around the door cleaner, but you can replace the Toyota's side skirt in case of damage in that area but, for the BYD, you'd have to replace the entire door.
FYI. The correct way to overtake is to indicate>accelerate to get closer to the car in front> then pull out. Pulling out before accelerating puts you in on coming traffic for longer - and trigger’s phantom breaking apparently!
The 12V battery sucks tho. We had the car just stopped working after a small pit stop to feed the little one. Now its at a workshop to get the 12V changed
My Friend bought one of these a few months ago and she loves it through if I had any complaints it would be the air con for a $50,000 car it's just not good enough my 12-year-old Golf has better air con.
That's probably not the problem with the car specifically. All EVs suffer from the same problem, air conditioning is just not as good as that in ICE vehicles because the heat generated from the ICE engine works together with the air conditioning to keep the car at optimal temperature and humidity. Some EVs try to mitigate this by adding a giant sunroof. (Or at least that's what I've heard.)
Hi Atto 3 community. My wife and I are thinking seriously of buying one of these. We live in a regional area in QLD. My concern is the range erosion when driving at highway speeds without any regen. What are owners experiences? What realistic range can you plan when at the maximum 100km speed limit? Thanks in advance.
The Atto LR is a draggy beast. However, it can go quite a long way under the right conditions. Going for maximum range I have found the best range speed, with cruise on, under good conditions (good road surface, flat terrain, no wind) is 80kmh. That gives an absolute range (100-0%) of around 430km. Practical maximum range including buffer is around 360km. Headwinds and driving at 100kmh can knock about 12% off these figures. Above 100kmh range can be reduced quite significantly. I regularly do a lot of trips up to about 300km between charge points and find the Atto is perfectly adequate for such trips. On very long trips I plan to recharge every 250km. Using fast DC chargers I stop the charge at 90%. I normally only charge to 100% using an AC slow charger (3KW).
I drove from Sale in East Gippsland to my home in central Vic, just south of Bendigo on a single charge and got home with 20% battery. A far bigger factor than regen in highway driving is gradient. I use half as much power going downhill into the city as coming back going from 700m to sea level and back.

That was a video that got me nodding and feeling validated 😂 Now, does anyone have problems with the Bluetooth/Spotify connection? The music stops playing in certain areas when I'm driving. I owned a Fiat 500 before I bought this one and never had this issue. The same goes for the ACC stop working when the driving conditions aren't really bad. Is this a common issue?
Just wanted to ask if you have noticed the fact that the battery management system ie cooling or heating does not function if the car is off but the doors are not locked. I have a bad habit of not locking my car as crime is so low we don't worry about where we live. For some one like me this could lead to damaging the battery pack.
Hi. I just wanted to add on few things. 1. Both volume control buttons are not the same. Press and hold the steering wheel one is mute, but hold and press the console one is turning off the entire infotainment system. The passenger cannot reach the volume control on the steering wheel too, therefore both controls are just find. 2. You haven't mantioned any major technical issues. You said about the build in camera? I don't think my Atto3 has it. How this works. Thanks.
Good callout. I suppose I only use the scroll wheel for volume control, though the ability for the one to be customisable means you can assign them to best suit your needs....are you based in Australia? Different countries may have different options and specs

Also, your one month ownership video highlighted the sensitivity of the "Forward Collision warning" alert. Has there been an OTA update or improvement in the situation?
I think the forward collision warning is still there but because the warning sound is so much more tamed now I can live with it. Good new is these are software issues so hopefully being able to turn off Lane Keep Assist completely will come through in the next updates

Hi, your channel has been a good source of info also being quite a big influence in my purchase of atto3 in nov16 2023
Having said that I’ve done road trips of 3600+ Kms round trip across deserts and heavy wind conditions. Passed 10k Kms on the 37th day of purchase and currently at 10600+ Kms
Pushed it to 1% while beating the km range stats that was displayed !!!
Great vehicle and of course awaiting the release of updates in uae
Cheers and keep posting !

@@tomkimber9072 This remains a major issue, it seems the world over.
我就知道!😂从第一次看到那些吉他弦出现时,我就想到了这种可能!孩子们的天堂,其他乘客的地狱!
The dealer told me that the one pedal function will be available in a few months. However, there is no news regarding the increase in charging power beyond 85 KW; VolksWagen did it via software on ID3 taking it from 85 KW to 115 KW.
Love the "gimmick" segment!!! Great review, glad I found you.
Changing the tyres to Sport Contact 7's made a big difference to the grip on the road
hahahaa excitement...that's one way to put it. I do the same, hovering over the accelerator when using CC
Fun video, especially the last section on the gimmicks. 👍
The last part of video is very creative and fun
Yeah, I'm with Raymond Mumford 6255. Nice review.. still happy 1 year on, which is good to hear as I pick mine up on the 8th!
Cute and funny 😅 thanks for these lighthearted takes
Thanks for making the video ED. You made me laugh so much with the gimmicks. Very helpful the 'swipe up'. I didn't know that. Yes, reconfiguring that wheel on the centre console would be a great idea.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have driven the EV6 and Ioniq 5. Both incredible cars! Will def check out the cameras next time I get in one
I wish u could say more about charging behaviour of BYD.
I own an EV in India and it has a very limited charging pattern. So would love to hear from you abt how BYD charging pattern works
There are reports in Australia that the ATTO3 rusts badly due to insufficient or no anti-rust treatment during production
Honestly I think the sickest thing about the Atto 3 is the sunroof + moonroof combo, with a shade cover thing. Like idk, but to me that's super cool.
The wife likes the extra volume control on the centre console, easy for her to turn down the radio when she wants to talk to me. Yeah, having it as a fan speed control might be nice. :)
(yes, I know she can always say Hi BYD)
This video was brilliant. I hope you come back and do more? Subscribed!
The door handle is better than the model 3. There are 2 door opening method. One is the press buttom. Which is very confusing for folks not familiar with the car. The other is the physical lever. Which intend for you to bail out while the press buttom fail. Ive been told using the lever too often will ruin your window seal.
Excellent review, as always….🎉
So phantom braking actually improves your bad driving behavior.
I was thinking at one point speeding up and not maintaining that 3 second distance between yourself and the car infornt of you eventually you will need to Che k the mirrors and shoulder check. Imagine that's at the split second the car I front of you has to put on their breaks hard
I really did enjoy this video, very informative and fun to watch. Thank you

Yes! Also this will stop the 'alert vibration' on steering when stepping on the line.
this gimmick video got you a new subscriber. keep up the good work.really fun to watch
why is byd seling for so expensive in europe

Rotating screen is pretty useful for me. I use the split screen function a lot.
Ive had mine for 1.5 years (since oct 22)
I've had the following gripes:
- The doors are heavy! Oldies have trouble opening and closing.
- ADAS is stinking hot trash. It is downright dangerous. I always disable. Looking forward to an update where we can permannently turn it off.
- The suspension just doesnt feel right. We feel every bump when driving semi sealed roads.
Love the following:
- V2L
- Cheap electricity prices.
Looking forward to:
- taking it to the snows like you did (perisher?) and having hotpot for lunch
hahahahaha taking it to the snow with hotpot for lunch sounds AMAZING!!
BYD CONS:
No phone key, have to use a physical key (and you only get 1, $400 for an extra)
Terrible tires (borderline unsafe in the wet) (decent tires are about $1800)
No per person seat/wheel/mirror position memory
No automatic driver profiles
No support for multiple spotify (or any media) accounts
Less power/performance
The doors are heavy and low to the ground. Some people have trouble opening and closing.
No digital childlocks
Mirrors don't aim down when reversing
Front wheel drive (feels worse to drive, you get torque steering when accelerating, less controllable)
Worse lane centering/cruise control, felt very unreliable
Much much less storage
No real one pedal driving
No semi-automatic indicators
No always on dash cam (sentry mode)
Barely any functionality from the phone app (looks like it might have been improved)
Requires actual servicing (I asked what they did, basically nothing + some filters)
80 kw p/h max charge speeds (Teslas are over 200 kw p/h)
Doesn't handle as well when driving, a bit touchy and jumpy both in braking and accelerating.
Can't limit the height of the auto open boot by location
Infotainment system is awful, software overall is terrible
More reliability issues (still not too bad compared to other cars, but the common structural rust issues are concerning)
Built in navigation is bad, satellite connection is spotty.
Stuck using third party chargers, not able to use the Tesla charger network
Speakers are pretty bad
Less real world range than a similar Tesla
Can't change the volume of the indicators, they are stupidly loud (This looks like it was adjusted in an update)
ADAS is basically broken.
BYD PROS:
20% cheaper than a new Tesla
Android auto support
Built in 240v powerpoint
Has an OEM heads up display.

Try: hey BYD, I'm cold😊
I bought yuan plus(atto 3) in China for my wife, good car still details to be improved
Nice summary. I haven’t had a problem with headrest other than having to wipe off some hair product from time to time. Am a bit triggered by seeing the tailgate opening sticker. That was one of the first things to go.
hahahaha don't know why I still have it on to be honest...
Hope you review someday about the battery capacity vs range. Thank you.
I think as a minimum it should have a third setting with greater regen, going from my Model 3 to the Atto takes a quick adjustment.
Finding out that BYD don’t offer one pedal driving was a deal breaker for me for their entire range. Some of the other quirks in their cars were hit or miss but I could learn to live with them but having owned a Tesla for nearly 4 years EVs now have to offer one pedal driving.
Hey Juic’d Ed, would be really interested in seeing a vid of you test driving the Seal/Dolphin to give your impressions as an Atto 3 driver 😊
Coming soon!
@@juicdgarageyou’re in for a treat, the Seal especially is a lovely car. You might be dangerously tempted!
Better than expected...
A comment on the BYD's door compared to the Toyota. Sure, the BYD's door might keep the area immediately around the door cleaner, but you can replace the Toyota's side skirt in case of damage in that area but, for the BYD, you'd have to replace the entire door.
Thanks for this great review! Is there a workaround on the Forward Collission Avoidance Breaking concern?
Try not tailgating the car in front of you!!
you are a genius , well done. pro level, one of the best in the car industry videos... cheers from Israel
Does nobody use navigation and play video in split screen? Going vertical is the only option for that.
FYI. The correct way to overtake is to indicate>accelerate to get closer to the car in front> then pull out. Pulling out before accelerating puts you in on coming traffic for longer - and trigger’s phantom breaking apparently!
I have driven my BYD Atto 3 23000km its very good
Fun and informative, thank you!

Is it worth it for seldom use? like 400km a month of use? I would like to buy a car but I dont really go that far
(Or at least that's what I've heard.)
aircon is pretty ordinary but if you turn on the aircon 5 mins before returning to the car it will be cool enough
being able to pre heat and pre cool an EV via an app is a game changer
@@dusty_giraffe2111 are you talking about heating rather than cooling?

@Juic'd Garage
Is there any settings to turn off that "Forward Collision Braking system"...?
Hi Atto 3 community. My wife and I are thinking seriously of buying one of these. We live in a regional area in QLD. My concern is the range erosion when driving at highway speeds without any regen. What are owners experiences? What realistic range can you plan when at the maximum 100km speed limit?
Thanks in advance.
Oops just saw all the other vids on range. never mind. Subscribed!
1 years of ownership I wonder how many km you've put on, I had mine since November 23 up to now already 6000km
WOahWee that's a lot of driving you do. Definitely getting your monies worth!

Hey Mr Ed! I watched a review of the BYD Dolphin and witnessed a total of SEVEN prods at the touchscreen to turn of Lane Keep Assist.
As it defaults to on every time you start the car, this is a dealbreaker for me unless it can be made easier. Can you say "Hi BYD, turn off the lane keep assist"?
Also, your one month ownership video highlighted the sensitivity of the "Forward Collision warning" alert. Has there been an OTA update or improvement in the situation?
You can turn off land keep assist via the steering wheel too 🙂
I think the forward collision warning is still there but because the warning sound is so much more tamed now I can live with it. Good new is these are software issues so hopefully being able to turn off Lane Keep Assist completely will come through in the next updates
Lane keep assist can be turned off in the dolphin. Not sure if it's the same for every country
Any chance you already had your hands on the sealion 6? In my country we do have it not only as a PHEV but also as a full EV :)
God those buttons. When will I EVER need to turn the blind spot monitoring on and off in a pinch?? Make it a singular fan speed button seriously who chose this design haha
I agree. Love physical buttons, but they should be for commonly used functions. Seat heating/cooling buttons should be physical since you use it often and it would be nice to have a direct physical control versus going into a screen every time.
What has servicing been like? Cost? Intervals?
5,000 and 20,000km were complimentary. I have had no issues with servicing, the servicing includes a written report on work done, vehicle condition and advisories.

My wife and I like the look of the outside of the car, but the inside is a little bit too funky for us. So we went with the Dolphin instead. Waiting to pick it up
I'm looking at this Atto 3 inside and out, it's certainly not designed by Franz von Holzhausen that's for sure.
Can you tell me how to get voice activation on speed. So it warns me if I exceed say 30mph. I can only set to 35mph with no voice. When I had a test drive the vehicle warned with voice. Thanks
Any feedback regarding spares and parts? a recent crash and can you actually get it fixed within and reasonable time?
