  • In this video, I will teach you how to use buses within Cakewalk by BandLab. Buses are a must use tool when it comes to mixing and routing audio in any daw. In this tutorial, I will teach you what buses are, why they are useful, and how to implement them within Cakewalk.
    So what are buses? In a real world scenario they pick up people and drop them off at destinations. This is the same case in music production except that the people are audio. You can look at buses as a middleman of getting audio to a destination. That can be getting audio to another bus, to a headphone mix, or to your speakers.
    So why are buses useful? Buses are useful for creating submixes and FX returns. Submixes are important as they make mixing much easier. They also allow you to create a more cohesive sound for the tracks you group together. FX returns are the most popular use for buses. This is where we put reverb, delay, and other time based effects. You want to look at using buses for your effects as opposed to putting them directly on a track.
    Implementing buses in Cakewalk couldn’t be simpler. For more information on how to do this properly be sure to watch this video in its entirety. If you have any questions feel free to leave a message in the comment section below.

    A great straightforward explanation about using a bus to apply reverb to a track and how to use busses in general. I just started using Cakewalk after a rather long break from recording at home and I seem to have forgotten how to do some rather simple tasks. I have a feeling I'll be checking out some more of your vids. lol. Great job Socerer!

    How much of original track volume is still played?

    Like everybody seems ta be doing now?

    I have a master bus and a lead vocal bus and a harmony bus. But when I try to export a mix the buses option wants to create three tracks made up of the three buses. I want a master bus mix... If i select master only, muting the vocal buses...I get a mix without vocals, of course. I have checked the routing and it is correct. Something simple I`m doing wrong here. Driving me nuts...Any advice ...?

    Just now watching these videos. I've been using Cakewalk for several years now (previously a Sonar user). Just curious, I've seen lots of videos (and this is typically the way I do it) where the effects on a bus, such as reverb, only have the wet turned up and dry turned all the way down so that the original signal doesn't come through the effect. I noticed that you didn't do that. Any particular reason?

    • @AudioSorcerer
      @AudioSorcerer  2 роки тому +1

      Your description is the proper way to use it. I don't use that particular reverb so I just missed it on it.

    May I know what is the advantage of using a separate bus for adding effects like this over giving effects to the same track itself? Is it simply for giving same effects to a group of tracks?
    Thank you

    • @AudioSorcerer

      You want to use busses for your effects so that tracks can share them. This saves on CPU power and it also makes for a better workflow. It also allows for bypassing effects quickly. 🤘🤘🤘

  • @zoltanbereczki8067

    Maybe a noob question but
    1. do i have to send the bus to the master bus? What if I send the bus there? Does it add double the original track's volume to it?
    2. What if i send the bus to an other bus? How does the master know, which bus was the last in the bus chain? (so it ignores the previous ones in the chain and plays only the last in the chain?). Or the master does take all buses and plays them all adding everything to the final mix?
    3. When i export the final mix Cakewalk lets me add onl ytracks not buses to the mix, how to export buses, where do they go at exporting?

    • @zoltanbereczki8067
      @zoltanbereczki8067 Рік тому +1

      Ok, i got the answer to my questions now :D
      1. The "Send" knob is used when you want to send only a part of the signal to the Bus or Aux channel (setting the amount with the knob next to it). This way you double the signal, and you will hear the original Track signal and the signal from the Bus where you sent the (newly created same) signal. The Gain fader below the Send row will interfere with the loudness of the track sent to the Bus. You can do anything with it then by managing the Bus settings, but you will still have the option to lower the sent amount of the original signal whenever you want at the original track's knob.
      2. and 3. When you unthick the "Post" button below the "Send", Cakewalk doesn't do any processes BELOW the Send row - meaning it won't process the Gain below the Send so it won't interfere with the track's loudness (it will be sent with untouched loudness).
      IMPORTANT! If you want to send the whole signal untouched to a Bus or Aux channel, it is much easier to set the "Output" (at the very bottom of the Track's view) to "Bus" - or the name of your Bus or Aux channel, so it will be sent there. This way the signal from the original track won't be included in the mix (it will technically be Muted without setting it to Mute) and it will go to the final mix only through the Bus you chose down there.
      You can set the Output of your Buses and Aux channels to any Track or Bus that you just want - any Track, Bus, Aux channel with it's Output set to "Master" will be included in the Final mix / Export.

    If I route multiple tracks to one reverb bus, how does that work once i want to export tracks to someone else for mixing? Do i export just the buses? If I do that, will they only get the reverb bus on it's own or do they get everything track that was sent to that reverb bus? Thanks

    • @AudioSorcerer
      @AudioSorcerer  3 роки тому +1

      Typically the mix engineer will apply their own reverb when mixing the song. If you have a specific reverb on a specific instrument that is a must and you want to export them together, just solo the track and then export it.
