Now just wait a minute. I can sing a melody and have it converted to a midi track with an instrument assigned to it? That is totally sick!!! I'm going to have some serious fun playing with that feature.
I've said it before, Mike, you are da man!!

Yes, please. The more of these "little" tips the more valuable Cakewalk becomes. I've always been a menu reader so I knew about a couple of these features, but while it's instructive to peruse the menus and click things just to see what happens, sometimes you just want to make music. Thank you for sharing.

2 Quick tips some may not know: The pro channel modules have built in presets selected by clicking on the little greyed out icon at the top left corner. And right clicking on the title bar of a plugin windows allows you to access options for up sampling on rendering or play back.

I love videos like this - direct, to the point and very informative. If you're able to make more in the future I'm sure they'd be extremely popular. Also, a huge thanks to you for your continued support for Cakewalk. The music industry can be incredibly snobby at times and it's a very pleasant change to not have a great DAW dismissed because it's free of charge. A few more people with an attitude similar to yours would benefit everybody.

Sorry for the lenghty post but memory lane is much longer and winding than I had expected. For those that read, I hope it's entertaining enough of a journey. And in all honesty, I ONLY wanted to thank you for reminding me to click the like button in the MIDDLE of your videos as especially when I use the TV version, it takes time to get there, and those that say that at the end... well... THEN I have to go back and replay part since by that time UA-cam has went to the next thing.
But since I'm here... Add me to the count. Was using Cakewalk back when it was Twelve Tones Systems and midi devices attached to the joystick port on your soundcard. lol (OMG, TTS just popped in head when I was trying to think... way back when before Sonar, before Roland (still kinda want that audio interface/console they sold), before Gibson. Before Bandlab. I'd thought at one time it was Cakewalk BY Cakewalk (which then I think of the first two Seal albums, although talk talk was worse... song talk talk album talk talk band talk talk... sorry i tangent at the slightest hint, thank goodness I AM housebroken)
And when I say used, I should clarify that means I owned a legitimate copy. Along with Cubasis on the Atari ST. (i remember wanting 44 MEGAbyte burnolli drive. For anybody that remembers iomega zip drives, think bigger (physically only... lol) And SUPERJAM on the Amiga. When Logic was available for... windows. Did I EVER compose anything close to even being a demo of a song? Rhetorical, I hope you realize. Also got giddy last year when I saw mention of a casio calculator music keyboardy thing. Awesome in that, you could record in the notes, and then play them back on one key) And lest I forget, Novation's very first product the MM10 (mini keyboard that attached to the Yamaha QY10 a portable hardware sequencer complete with sounds) The closest to that songmaking endevour was on an Ensoniq VFXsd. (they somehow goofed at the factory, and put the sd version in a plain vfx box) And now realizing how many dead companies i've witnessed being bought out and either forgot about or they died as well. And honestly, while EMU being bought out by Creative Labs did result in some potentially decent hardware, even CL's claim to fame (soundblaster for those too young) had better drivers (and more feature rich) by enthusiasts.
Heck, remembering all of this, no wonder people have asked why I don't work in a music store. Simple. I can't play. Not that I play badly... I can't play at all. (I take that back I CAN play part of Silent Night... and will ALWAYS remember how to... 12-13-10... from an early 70s kids toy and the music sheet had corresponding numbers for notes, lol)
My last venture was 2009 or so and had a blast importing some depeche mode midi files into a... shall we say... an eyepatch wearing copy of Reason (i think RECORD was still sold separately as was Rewire... but ReBirth had been gifted to us by propellerhead) However insignificant that was, along with getting into 3d modeling, were I to be able to go back knowing what I know now... (besides, being very very wealthy with stock in many a company... lol) I would be a remixer. Anyway, that time in Reason was such a blast (heck, i still have mp3s of my versions on my phone, as occasionally i still enjoy listening to them.
So now... I've got the itch again. Over the past six months or so I've started acquiring things. But still have a few real world obligations and my new computer build that was on pause because I needed a new graphics card and with the chip shortage... unbelievable scalping... with even the manufacturers getting in on the "we can sell ANYTHING for as much as we want" action. Since I already purchased everything else for the build, I'm just gonna swap out the card from my last build (especially since I had no clue my old cpu had integrated graphics... lol)
As far as musical related stuff. Reason 11 (and while the half price discount was available, Reason+ sub for a year). An Arturia Microlab (couldn't pass up the all black version). Then the Presonus Atom SQ and the iostation 24c. Last week an NI M32, to get in on the Komplete half price upgrade sale, as I've wanted Komplete since the first version and mainly because I wanted Absynth before that and a combo that includes FM7. And pretty sure at that time they had their virtual Prophet-5 clone. While in Guitar Center and waiting for assistance (funny, you don't want/need salespeople as you just wanna browse, they won't leave you alone. You wanna just purchase something and get out... *crickets* But while waiting, what... a used s49 for $160??? And although I couldn't actually demo it and it did look like it had been around... allegedy it's fine and return policy has me covered. Heck, they even upsold me two years coverage on it for $30. Unfortunately, I can't take possession until July 5th for whatever reason. And since the sale on Komplete is only this month... I'll keep the M32 regardless, just to get that discount. Funds willing, I'll have Ultimate. If not, at least the regular version. Been watching the sales at Plugin Boutique, and picked up Scaler. Along with some other stuff. Like the recreation of the Moog that was sold at Radio Shack in the 80s. Sentimental to me as... I actually messed around with the real thing back then. Oh and pretty much ALL the old stuff from Cakewalk (minus Project5... *sniff*) off of eBay. But why, you ask? Don't you know most of what you get on ebay is pirated versions? I thought you were doing this all legit this time? Yup, I do. Yup, I am. Thing is, back between 2009-2011. I ALSO bought some of their stuff as well... Dimension, Zeta+, the Proteus collection for Dimension. Well, I didn't get updated into the new system with bandlab and doubt that they even have a download section for those things. But, through the power of gmail and me never deleting things, I still have reciepts that have... my legit serial numbers. :-) I think I have everything I need (although, if i DID get chance to get for cheap... EW Gypsy (LOVE those guitars) AND lastly but not leastly... ImpOSCar... as i have ALWAYS wanted the real one since it was introduced and I would never ever buy the real thing (except if i had money to throw away and even then... between the care & feeding and reliability... I'd just display it as art. lol
And got an imac off of woot for cheap, that... get this, was advertised as base config so i ordered more ram for it... but it came pretty much maxed out with upgraded cpu, ram and hd. Mainly to "relearn" macos, because i like this latest path their on with Apple's M1 chip and the convergence/integration between macos and ios. I've decided I just might want to try the Kool-aid again as my history with Apple in the 90s was quite bitter. (Don't get me started on all that. And glancing at how long this post is going to be, I kinda doubt anybody will dare. lol)
So NOW i'm faced with... what DAW do I want to use or more like what SHOULD I choose? I'm not even gonna mess with Ableton since all I own right now is 10 lite and that 4 track limit. I seriously don't understand all the hype behind it. Not that I think it bad, but just don't understand what makes it so special other than the scene triggering or so aspect. I'd research it more, but currently I have more viable options. I didn't mind the sequencer from Reason in 2009 and i'm sure it's even better and i'm primarily going to be working with those instruments. Well, now that I think about it, if all goes well I'm gonna be using quite a bit more. And since currently Reason doesn't let you use VSTs inside it and since the rack is now pluggable into OTHER daws... I guess barring any negatives (if anyone who actually does read this has any opinion, please share) I suppose I should just use Studio One Artist. Oh... lol I almost forgot... I could use... CAKEWALK... lolol
Any thoughts? I promise to keep my replies brief. lol (who am i kidding... lol) Okay okay, MORE brief. Baby steps.
Thanks Mike, at least I know you remember some of the stuff I talked about since, from one of the posts, I think you're like a year younger than me. And with you already being across the pond, were I to say... SAW or PWL am I mistaken that you'd know what/who I was talking about?
Again thank you for this channel. I do actually enjoy the videos and just your attitude in general. Now I just had a mini anxiety attack, as i feel guilty and almost don't want to post this quite yet. You are so polite and even when you ask for support, you even say it in a way that is grateful even if it is just $1/month. And here i'm trying to align stars and possibly even spend rent money on Komplete. And who knows if I even am gonna do anything more than I ever have or if the stuff will just sit and collect dust. My purpose for buying all these things was to not have to (since i know me well enough that... it would never happen) when the world starts turning more and I have to get a job and be a responsible adult again. (i.e. for the first time ever) lol Taking a deep breath and telling myself to relax. Everything will be fine. *sigh*

Hi Geoff! It's 11pm here, and past my bedtime. I wanted to respond, as the tools here on UA-cam don't allow me to 'bookmark' a comment to reply later.
I can't respond in length, as I really am in bed and about to drop off! However, I wanted to thank you for that trip down memory lane. I was both an Amiga and Atari ST user back in the day, and many other things you mentioned took me back in time.
I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be answering a question or not! But I didn't want you to feel ignored, so, I'll just thank you for being a great supporter of this channel.

Great tips, and some things I didn't know or maybe forgot after using Cakewalk for two decades.

Thank you Mike, I've been using Cakewalk since Cakewalk DOS, where afterwards I synched it to a 8 channel multichannel tape deck for the audio, it was only MIDI. I just bought a plugin 3 days ago that I just put in last night. Your video has inspired me to go to the studio and start recording today. I'll have to buy your merchandise, and I just purchased that reverb. I just can't seem to buy enough reverbs. I emailed a few people to check your video out, Have a great weekend and thanks. You're going to save me a lot of time.

They're all useful, especially number 5, but number 2... Mike, you have literally just changed my life.
I'm using the word literally very intentionally. From a stroke many yrs ago, I have limits to what my right hand can do, and I don't have the skills to just sit and write music on paper, hearing it only in my head, ala Mozart. In fact, using a pen or pencil can be a real fight. This will change a lot of things for me, starting today.

Absolutely 💯 thrilled with your videos. After nearly 25 years I'm returning to Cakewalk, my fist DAW I used. Mostly for midi in those days. And it's great to have your video's to help.

Hello, Mikhail. About my question about the Navigator. I figured it out - it was necessary to install Advanced in the workspace. And I had Basic... Live and learn forever! Good luck to you!
