Gaia was an emotional game for me. So many scenes struck chords no other game could in those days. I was eight when I played this - and that scene atop the Tower of Babel, where you talk to all the friends you lost, the people you tried to help and even your own father.... That scene broke me. I could never bring myself to defeat Dark Gaia after that moment.

Hello there. I want to applaud you for making a fab review on a game that is beloved and cherished by me. I watched my dad play this while I was still in diapers and eventually played it on my own a few times. You make valid points about it being almost linear in such with the gameplay but with a great story behind it. All your reviews are entertaining and you converse so humanly normal I guess lol thanks again!

I have to say that I disagree with what you said about the graphics in this game. This game has better graphics than Secret of Mana and A Link to the Past (more detailed at least). It came out in 1994 so yes there are other games that look better (don't tell me FFVI has better graphics than this game since it had less detailed chibi characters but the environments might be better) that came out in 1994 and later but nothing in 1993 or before had better graphics than this game. All that being said the rumination didn't disappoint. Interesting points. I think this game may have influenced Final Fantasy VII (the comet or meteor, Gaia).

The way I interpreted it was that Will was only changing forms, but he kept his consciousness. Thanks for this Rumination!

My favorite of your Ruminations are on classic games from the SNES and PS1 eras - glad you made this one and thanks to whomever requested it! Would love to see a Rumination on Lufia II and Ogre Battle sometime down the line. I enjoy binge-watching these while working :)

I heavily agree. I'm waiting myself on Lore's run or rumination on Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars, or Paper Mario TTYD, a Gamecube title. Another modern title that is getting a remake is Radiant Historia. I loved this rumination, and it helped me understand the game a lot better.

I'll put in a vote for Lufia! :) Cody, do you just like Lufia II or the whole series?

Tiffany Shank For me, Lufia II on the SNES and the DS remake game were both incredible. I had a hard time getting into the first one though, and never played the GBA game. What about you?

I should note, the first half didn't wow me either. Second half is like... Total shift in tone and story.

If remember correctly, when Will transforms, his spirit is combined with the spirit and body of the warrior. Its kind of like the form masks in majora's mask. I think gaia herself actually mentions it the first time you become freedan.

Apparently there's a retranslation in progress, something the game really needs I think. I like it for the most part otherwise, except I found the pacing better in both the other two games.

The game’s title, “Illusion” of Gaia, is very fitting.

Terranigma may be quintet best game but my fav is Gaia. The former is a better game but emotionally the second struck me harder as a kid. Gaia is deffinetively not an RPG (no stats or xp) but a adenture/action/puzzle game. The game was for kids and keeping that in mind puzzles while light had their thing going on, the only part where I got stuck was the mushroomlike maze, damn I wasnt able to get out of there for a while.

This was awesome -- I loved your description of the raft scene. I played this game almost all the way through as a kid and haven't played it since (so I was going to say that while I agree with your take that the other forms are just sophisticated Magitek armor for Will, I'm not sure that I remember well enough to have a detailed opinion). You actually made me want to play it again, lol. (Which I can do, I have an SNES cartridge and a retro system, so maybe I'll try to take that on soon.) (Alicia here, Tiffany and I share the computer.)

I wonder where that kind of raft scene/sequence originated. I never played IoG, but a similar scene appeared again in Xenogears (right down to the bit about catching and eating raw fish) and was quite memorable there too IMO.

I remember renting this constantly when I was young, of course it was Called Illusion of Time in my part of the world for some strange obscure reason I have never figured out.
I got closer and closer to the ending each time, obvioiusly starting at the beginning each time so I am fairly familiar with the story such as it is. The raft is one of my favorite scenes too, I was hoping for more of a romance between Will and Kara, which IS there I believe and might blossom in the "new" world.
AND it was the first game that had a character with MY name in it. Not the american/english Eric but Erik. Which was rally cool. Sadly the character really do not get much of an ending as I recall, though I do get so save him from the vampires so there is that. I liked to go the extra mile and save him as Freedan so he sees me change back to Will.
Speaking of... I feel that Freedan IS Will but not just the shape. That it is the promise or ideal version ow Will as the can become. That is just my interpretation of it though. As for shadow I have no theories, but since he/it comes in fairly late in the game. I DO love the Will/Kara becoming the ultimate being to take down the comet/dark gaia.
Twice I tried to make a short story out of it, the last time it got to over 60 A4 pages or so. Not any GOOD I think but still. I might try to revise and finish it one of these days, but it has been over twelve years since I last looked at it so probably not. Good game. Good job"

One of the best snes RPGS. Very dark storyline and philosophical story I've loved since I got it in 1994. Yes, pretty awful English translation, even the beta had different text

I also hate this kind of twist in the story. Too many times have been used this type of plot twist. I do not understand why they have to be so attached to earth. Not just this one planet exists in the universe.
