One of my favorite scenes in an SNES title. Man, this was fucked up at the time it came out. This game in general was beyond the pale as far as typical Nintendo standards go--the brutal slave trade, the roasted pig, the game of Russian Glass--but the death of the Jackal was by far the most twisted event.
The whole game basically presents you various different answers to the question "What is life worth to you? How far are you willing to go for it?" I'd say most modern story-focused games rarely go this existential.
This scared me when I first saw it. Just... holy shit... In fact, first time I saw it, and heard the boss music, I thought we'd have to beat him to death while he burned. Funnily enough, my older brother thought so too when he played.
John Gallagher That kind of reminds me of back in the past Game Show called Legends Of The Hidden Temple where the player tries to match the Symbols in The Chamber Of The Sacred Markers.
If you exit the room and come back in, it's just bones. BONES
I love how Will's grandma's melody is a soothing song that winds up causing someone to catch fire and burn to death.

I was expecting an epic fight with this guy but no...he was just torched right there, just like that....poor Jackal...he wasn't that evil...
One of my favorite games, but no one talks about how messed up it is
Probaly since he can't touch her; Whenever he tries to, she just backs slightly back making him unable to reach. I dunno.
That's one of the most violent death in a jrpg...
Brutal AF. I remember this scene from like 20 years ago (can confirm the game was called Illusion of Time in Australia)
Jackal looks really evil when he's first consumed by fire, don't he?
Lol ;)
I wish there was a fight against the Jackal...
@@lorddoomer501 That would be really cool :)
That was brutal.
i'm suprise kara doesn't catch on fire considering how close she is when he's crawling towards her! XD
@NyxRain You're welcome. Glad it helped.
i loved this part of the game!! i miss my gaia :(
Shit is gone real. Like holy shit...
The hieroglyph order is in Will's Father's Journal for future reference.

It doesn't help that Will's father's name is Olman and the big statue on that game show was Olmec (I think).
Me: BURN IN HELL, Jackal! *Evil villian laughter*
Kara: o.o?
you dead...try again^^
