I think the scene between Lady and Dante that plays out over "dead" Arkham is the best cutscene in the series.
I firmly claim it's why Dante started taking his role in all of the events more seriously. You can see how Dante demenor towards Lady changes after her "He was MY father, he was MY responsibility" outburst, the jokes end instantly.
So much character packed in about two minutes.
"Aren't ya gonna shoot? Well, that's a switch."
I think it's better for Lady to be a full human, it's important for me that there is contrast to the brothers. She's beneath them in terms of raw power but still very capable. Her being imbued cheapens her character and amount of skill she would have to constantly display in order to stay alive.
yeah but then the whole close range rocket launcher explosion or getting her main vein cut (along with half her leg when Arkham use her own weapon against her.)
She also the daughter of arkham who was descendant of the people who built the tower and the priestess sacrificed to seal said tower. Human my ass. We see what happened with regular humans.
They get killed. by dozens. See DMC 5.
I don't really mind cause it doesn't matter, but the physical abilities she shows are clearly far and beyond what a regular human can do.
Kalina Ann was the descendant, wasn't she? If Arkham himself had the blood, he wouldn't need Mary there at all. But yes, who said you can't be a "human" and have super strength, etc? Captain America is a good example.
I started playing DMC 3 today. I am at chapter 11. I haven't played the game in years. I am doing a million times better than when I played it years ago when it first came out. The explanation in this video motivated me to play again. Thanks you for the video.
24:00 In my opinion, you are absolutely correct. The threshold for what even _is_ "a fight" is very different to them as compared to a human's. Stabbing each other other with swords isn't any more serious than two boys shoving and grappling each other in the backyard. It can't even be called a fight and they're only really going to get a bit tired after a while.
I don't think they fail to understand violence as they are otherwise fairly well adjusted and intelligent. On the other hand, the experience of growing up with someone in those terms would of course carry on going forward. In fact, one of the reason they enjoy fighting with each other so much probably is _because_ they get to cut loose and stop worrying about consequences. They know the other party can take it and dish it back out; which is what makes it fun.
I mean, being descendants of devils you'd expect them to be more aggressive, violence and battle-loving than the average person. What makes them not outright mindlessly murderous is likely the fact that they are descendants of a very intelligent, high-ranking devil. But that savagery is still there. Kind of like people who are into extreme sports and the rush & thrill that comes with it.
I agree wholeheartedly on your theory about Lady Arche. There is a couple of things she does in the game that no normal human I think would be able to pull off, trained or otherwise. The whole climbing the tower with her motorcycle thing comes to mind. Also, in regards to the Trish thing, I have been saying that FOR YEARS. Trish was made by Mundus to resemble Dante's mother, to get him to lower his guard. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO HOOK UP WITH SOMEONE THAT LOOKS LIKE YOUR DEAD MOTHER?!? Blegh. Anyway, great Rumination Arche. Really loved it.
I just beat the game on normal. Vergil gave me one heck of a fight. You were right about this game. I started experimenting, stringing moves and weapons together. I also enjoyed the fact that their is platforming and puzzle solving as well. Fantastic game, one of the best. Thanks.
In regards to Lady. It's not Canon but it is from Capcom. In the game Project X Zone Lady has a unique healing skill called Priestess' Blood. The implication being that her, and by extension the priestess she descends from, has unique and possibly divine properties.
The developers also mentioned that while most people think that it's Lady's mother that's the descendant of the priestess, hence why Arkham married her, it's in fact HE who was her descendant.
Humberto Ugalde that explains why he became so obsessed.
oh shit I thought it was the mom, had no idea
Excellent analysis.
People think Devil May Cry does not have plot.
Devil May Cry 5 will expand the lore and I hope you do a video on 5.
I feel the need to note that DMC 3 has some problems with platforming, DMC 4's scene of Dante talking with Credo as the later one dies is... bad (IMHO) and that DMC 2 had some different Devil Triggers to experiment with, not borderline useless ranged weaponry and a whole separate stick for (however floaty) wallrunning moves.
I do have to agree on DMC 2 being generally not very fun though. The time restricted escape segments with crappy camera and small margins for error definitely put me off from finishing it. And DMC 1 has some pretty hard to get used to controls, in my opinion.

...I am pretty sure there is no mention of a god - or big G God - in DMC games proper. Unless I am misremembering some things?
My personal interpretation was that Vergil deliberately left a 'backup strat' in this guy (who was rather thickly suggested to be his son both in the original release of DMC 4 and in the most recent re-release on top of that) and may or may not attempt to permanently possess him in the future. Remember, Vergil is the one with not just personal and inherited power, but with the drive and knowledge to get into the demonology and magic side of things at the point in the timeline (as in, sometime before DMC 3 starts).

Also, the implication that the form the Devil Arms take is wholly dependant on Dante being the one to capture them, with his personality at the time. Do you think Nevan would've transformed into an anime scythe telescopic lightning devil bat summoning electroguitar if Vergil killed the boss instead?
There is also a... kind of a running theme with the target demon coming into a sort of an accord, and / or submitting to Dante personally in some respect in most cases where boss characters get to have a hint of personality. I felt it was kind of a shame that Dante chose to enforce 'No talking!' on them; allowing further interaction after the boss battle is done, even if the demons in question lost any and all agency of action could've added to the franchise, I think. Especially if it went ahead and had a full-blown RPG installment.

If Xahn doesn't believe that an essential part of growing up as siblings of a close enough age is attempting to punch each other's teeth out and the personal character growth that comes with the experience, then she probably didn't see much of siblings growing up. :P
It is also notable that in no scene in the game they are actually actively trying to kill each other, not with the level of vitality and regeneration they have going on. While the player is confronted with a series of progressively harder boss battles, Vergil is (arguably) trying to force Dante to awaken his Devil Trigger, for example. Or (maybe, he may have well just lost his temper there) is suspecting that he will need Dante's blood and power to break the seal. Or Dante decides that he wants to stop Vergil from doing what he's doing for reasons besides 'I just don't like you'. When they actually mean to kill something dead, the final Arkham boss battle happens.
I have to absolutely agree with you that the interaction dynamic Dante and Vergil have going between them in this game is not only carefully measured and weighted from the storycrafting angle of it, but also is extremely believable as well. You could make them not look like identical twins with a color scheme visuals going, you could remove the naming theme, you could remove the mention of the same parents, but they will still come off as someone who grew up with each other, or otherwise got to know each other very well.
I would like to mention one other bit of personal interpretation in regards to them I didn't hear voiced here. Dante comes across as 'the glass is half full' kind of person. He revels in how powerful he is, he finds joy in what he can do, especially when compared to the human norm. Vergil, on the other hand, compares himself to their father. And constantly finds himself wanting. I would've liked to see how these character traits would've looked like if the series allowed a look in both of their personal development down the line with their approach to power as you've mentioned.
Would it endure unchanged over the years, tempered, colored, contrasted with their developing personalities but still essentially the same? Would change into something different? Maybe a total reverse of these underlying attitudes that drive them would happen instead?

While Mary comes across as the 'muggle' of the cast, she certainly shouldn't be running around with that thigh stab wound without /something/ to help her. Frankly, that wound should've been fatal through good ol' bleeding out, much less allowing for any kind of mobility.
So, either action movie hero tropes at work, or... alchemy, demonology or whatever other magic the setting has that item descriptions' allude to. If I remember right, Dante's guns self-replicate their ammunition by drawing on Dante's devil powers and using that to run some magic or another. So miraculous healing may or may not be at work. Some ancestral trait may be it as well, given how Arkham uses her blood in the ritual he planned, but I dunno.
It is worth noting that her playable appearance in the updated re-release in DMC 4 has her mostly keeping up with the other characters in what she can do besides rather slow and limited melee and no Devil Trigger, but that may be just gameplay conventions, for all we know.
XXX
It doesn't really bear out (and kind of takes away from the character, if it does), but my first impression of Arkham and the strange (glitchy?) video effect they showed off his facial scarring (or tattoo?) with involved 'is the dude possessed?'
I have since come to dislike that avenue of headcanon, but still feel it worth mentioning. He was deeply studying the demon lore, after all. In all matters shown but for the part after 'break the seal' of his plan he was more informed than all other characters combined.

I am of opinion that no pairing stuff happens between anyone in the cast, besides Nero and his love, but whatcha gonna do about internet and people with shipping goggles? :D
XXX
The bar / club / stripclub / whatever that's right by Dante's joint does have a bunch of uptruned furniture and smeared blood on the walls, doesn't it?
One other idea I've had is that the neigbourhood is just... empty. Abandoned. It may just be the engine limitations, but most buildings shown look borderline condemned, most cars like they would never go anywhere under their own power again. Maybe people left it because they've felt uneasy with all this supernatural stuff directly underground, maybe actual demon attacks happened. And while Dante apparently has a working telephone landline, he may have chose to settle here because he doesn't need to pay for much else? :D

Rebellion looks an upsized, kind of overdesigned version of the bigger of the two scottish swords that are referred to nowadays as a 'claymore'. Personally, I would've liked it more if it sported completely realistic dimensions - that would've allowed Dante to show off some of the wonderfully brutal and cool looking irl techniques in both cutscenes and gameplay in addition to his over the top magical moves. Yamato is presented as gorgeous, lovingly crafted 3D replica of a mostly plain katana, why can't Rebellion be the same?
Also, it may have been worth it to cover the differences between description of weaponry that appears in multiple games and just the whole evolution of the arsenal over the years. Hmm... I should go find a wiki to refresh my memory.
Great analysis. I don't know why there isn't more traction or discussion about this video
Personally my favorite weapons are Agni and Rudra, the talking swords of fire and wind respectively, mostly because of the fact they shout one liners while you swing them around XD
It is possible to make no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is LIFE.
This game is one of my favorite games. I've played plethora of games in my life.
The Rumination I've been waiting for!
Genuine thankyou Arch :)
Ugh Dante should not end up with Trish. She looks exactly like his mother
I wouldn't say Nero has Vergils soul ripped and placed straight into him, I think it's much more likely that he is Vergils son, it would help explain why dmc3s events didn't occur straight after their mothers death if Vergil had a lover and a son, that couldn't take the beating he and his brother could, that would spur him into his power hungry quest.
Also in the book version of dmc4, the scene where Nero awakens his devil trigger and takes yamato is changed to where he loses consciousness and finds himself talking to an ominous figure. It asks what Nero desires most, he responds by asking what he wants instead and it says "Power... I need more power", it ends with Nero agreeing that he would like that to.
By the way, devil may cry 4 has a special edition, a book, a mobile game and two pachinko machines. Just found it funny how the games that got milked the most was the one that was widely considered half finished in the first place.
he officially the son of vergil. it EVERYONE ELSE in the order that got nero angelo body parts inside them.
Such a shame that we will probably never get Lamentation Analysis on DMC2.
If you want to see more depth to the characters Arch, especially Lady and Dante, check out the DMC anime.
Love your Rumination series.
Been a minute since I watched your videos man! Very good Rumination here
KH2 isn’t just “hit reaction command to win”. There’s a whole mess of combos you can and need to do. Especially if you’re doing the post-game content, like Sephiroth and Lingering Will.
please do these ruminations as often as you can.
gameplay wise I like them in this order DMC 4,3,5,2,1 in that order and liked them overall it's 3,4,2,5,1 in that order
Have you ever played ninja Gaiden black or its sequel? If so did you like them? The game play fits most of your points here but a bigger need for defense.
Ooh, Chronicles of Riddick reference...
God I love this game.
I'd fucking kill for a ruminations analysis on dmc4 se or the Og dmc4
I have a theory about the lore of this game and pray for a DMC5 to at least address it, if not confirm it. Again.
So, Vergil basically tries to emulate Sparda in every way, he wants to inherit all that his and Dante's father had, including power. And what would he do if he achieved that goal? Dante even hits a nerve when he asks Vergil that question directly. The theory is that Sparda started the whole conflict between demons and humans and eventually ended it himself, siding with humans. DMC4 even goes out of it's way to confirm this - vilains in that game open the portals to Hell and cause all the destruction and then fight demons themselves to appear as heros in the eyes of the people. They even erect a statue of Sparda and refer to it as a Savior.
That could be why Dante refuses to acknowledge Sparda as his father. That could be what Vergil was trying to do in DMC3.
I see the story of Lady as a reflection of Dante's, her struggle against her fathers intentions are the same. And they both shed a tear after they kill their relatives for the same reason.
Arch..good piece..can you do a rumination on golden sun and/or golden sun the lost age? GBA classics and i'd like to hear your insights.
Hey arch are you interested in the Legacy of Kain games?
I'm surprised that none recomended for you so far.
Here I thought Vergil was Nero's father
Now you can uso motocycle in the game play lets see how skill base DMC5 will be.
really like the game, very fun too play
Jackpot!
Still haven't played DMC1, 2, 3 yet. But I absolutely loved 4. Too bad the DMC3 port is really bad.
No it isn't.
store.steampowered.com/app/6550/
User reviews say otherwise.
OhManTFE
Sooo?! It's still not bad.
If you get the Style Switcher mod it makes the PC version infinitely deeper than any other version.
Can't think for your self?
JACKPOT!
Yay dmc3!
I played the reboot on PS3, I liked it, but I hated the story
Oh god 2 was terrible. I played 5 missions and I said ok seen enough.
duuude.wtf happened to your hair... funno why... but your videos looked better with the white/coloured hair. concrete brick wall... bedsheet on the window, headset and all (half life rumminations ). I think becaise it felt like a one on one late night discution.
This feels ... artifficial....you got too "in your face" and artificial , as in "You watch me talk..." rather than..."what you can't sleep eighter? what do you think about this game that i'm sure you played over and over again, here's my outlook on it"
This design loses intimacy...
Dmc 2 sucked
the Rumination Analysis i love to see u do is two but in the same series Xenogears and Xenosaga
