I completely agree with your take on the narrative theme of the game being fear, and I've often thought in similair patterns.
It's somewhat obvious with how the bosses of each dungeon are called nightmares, but what's really important to mention is how the final boss of the game, who's name is nothing more than Nightmare, goes through sevreal itterations of bosses that Link fought in ALttP. It starts off with a bot from Zelda II, which I can't explain, but then goes on to look like Agahnim, who zapped away Zelda in front of his eyes, who's tyranny led to Link's uncle being killed. It then resembles the moldorm, Ganon and a lanmola before ending up with Dethl - this indefinable thing. So it goes through Link's known fears before ending with, what is to me, the embodiment of the Fear of the Unknown.
The only way for Link to wake up is to overcome these fears, instead of trying to escape from the fears by living happily in a peaceful village with a beautiful girl and all these fun characters. I.... I really like Link's Awakening.
This game is really, really good when it comes to the narrative if you ask me.

I really like your theory regarding Link's thievery, especially how it further fleshes out Link as a character. I've always believed Koholint to be a product of both the Wind Fish and Link as well, though I've only ever cited the Mario and Zelda references as my proof, so thanks for opening my eyes to the far more involved lore significance of the game's other aspects. I feel like I'm really gonna enjoy this series of Ruminations!

Thanks for the great analysis. "Fear"...I didn't think of that as being the theme of this game before. But now I can see it! I just finished this game for the first time an hour ago or so. It's themes are very relevant to my life right now...and you helped me understand it a bit better.

Captain - I believe I speak for everyone, Sir, when I say: To hell with the lighting. Seriously though I think you're the only one that cares about that 1% production quality that is the three pixels of messed up greenscreen and you being a bit more pale than a minute before. Record whenever you feel like it! - Taygren

I love this game. I also just replace it as part if my replay of the zelda series...it has aged very well. I like the item mechanic. The ability to switch out everything, even the sword, and was great and I wish more than just oracles had done this. On the lore bit...I agree that Link is affecting the world and the idea of ending the world with the dream is an ethically troubling one. I am not sure if fear was the only theme. Maybe it was for Link but for me it was sadness and loss. Very rarely am I sad to finish a game but here I delayed ending because of the consequences. Very meta for me.

Man, if Link is willing to shame himself by calling himself Thief for the rest of the game, then he must feel incredibly guilty.

When you streamed this, I actually learned so much, not just from you as well, from Muffin and a few other people in chat. I really hope to replay this game soon, and experience it again. This was a good rumination arche! :D

This (in its DX version) is my favourite of the classic 2D Zeldas. It's tight, well designed and crafted. And the interface is close to as slick as it can be given the buttons on the GB.
If only those damned acorns didn't put up a flow interrupting messagebox... Those items are my only irritation when I play the game.

I actually acquired the bow through the path of most resistance, by tediously acquiring the necessary amount rupees needed to purchase it. I didn't even know you could steal it!

+LordMalice6d9 I heard of a special bonus you get if you complete the game without loosing a life.
But i never researched it does anyone know what that might be?

@@bazzy5644you probably found out in the intervening 7 years but the ending is slightly graphically different, you see Marin flying at the end or something similar, I can't remember exactly what it was

I've made it a rule to try my best to avoid the guardian acorn and piece of power like the pest. I can usually go through the game only picking up like one or so :D. Only because of that damn music.
I like this game so much and tend to consider it my second favorite Zelda (right after alttp).

The Wind Fish is the developer, and Link is the player. Together, they create something new neither expected, which explains the combined dream :O

Only halfway through (so forgive me if you touch on this), One thing I find very strange in LA is that everything is a dream (very obvious) but for you to get the ocarina you have to lift some rocks and go into a building to (oddly) go to sleep. That part just always feels weird to me.

Re: Nintendo stuff.... My take on it is that Link is dreaming the Nintendo stuff, and the player--by "linking" with Link--is responsible for the Nintendo stuff. If you know where and how to look, Zelda can be surprisingly meta.

Has to be my fav Zelda, 2D at least (not that I care about the 3D ones much). So many firsts and it's insanely polished and well paced. Only a bit limited by the hardware really.

10:40 or so - the problem being that the only mini-boss who knocks you back to the entrance is also the one you must beat BEFORE getting a warp point back to the room he was in....

Koholint is a dream the Wind Fish is having; I don't think it's accurate to say he "created" it, because dreamers usually don't have much influence over what they dream. It's likely that some elements of the geography of Koholint were taken from things the Wind Fish saw on the ocean as he was flying over, and perhaps Link's mind also impacted some of the details. But I don't think there was intentionality in any of it.

About 10:20 , i think existentialism is about life's meaning (which is maybe metaphysical or ethical). the question of how do we know what is real is a different issue, but both have to do with justifying knowledge

A rumination about the Oracle games would be interesting.

  • @EnvisionerWill

It never occurred to me to steal the bow, even though it's 980-rupee cost is literally 19 rupees less than the maximum that you're physically capable of holding. While it takes some major tedious grinding to reach the cost early and have the bow for convenience, if you avoid squandering your money, you should be able to hit 980 at about the time you actually NEED the bow in order to get into the Face Shrine (which is also where you find out that the island is a dream). I always figured the main purpose for the bow's existence was simply to give you a way of spending the money which you've been finding throughout the game; stealing it would have seemed pointless (and not worth giving up the ability to buy Bombs and Arrows if you run out).

Any chance of uploading the play-through? I could sit through a much longer video about this game! It's so perfect- a great example of technical limitations giving rise to tremendous creativity!
And it's nice to hear someone acknowledge the awesomeness of the Tal Tal Mountain song! When I was young I used to just pause the game and listen to it. So epic!
