Amiga 500 on the Internet via Plipbox

- Well over a year ago I made a video on getting an Amiga 500 online with a Raspberry Pi. It works well but its slow and needs some configuration on both devices, as well as there is quite a bit of cable management to deal with :)
Well there is a newer and better solution, and thats by using a Plipbox.
Plipbox is an Arduino-based device that allows to connect low-end classic Amigas via Ethernet to your local network. It bridges IP traffic received via PLIP on the parallel port of the Amiga to the Ethernet port attached to the Arduino
In this video i show the hardware as well as configure it on my Amiga 500 setup and do a little bit of testing.
It's a great solution and definetly well worth looking into. I recommend this over the Raspberry Pi solution.
Of course this is not my design, you can find everything you need to know about the Plipbox at:

Ive been using Amiga since 1988 and still to this day im amazed at what it can do! I just got my A500 with the older Kickstart 2 on the net and working with Miami and a Plipbox and couldn't be more impressed with it! Amiga Explorer works great. Everything just gels so well. Cheers for this video MVG. This helped me setup Miami DX for use with a Plipbox. Amiga!! :)
Thanks for these videos. I am pimping out my Tandys now but when done I'll get an Amiga. Loved the A600 vid you did.
I don’t have the time or wherewithal to retro Amiga things these days but I had an A500 through my high school days. This is the first time I’ve watched footage of an Amiga in action since then. Man the pings and clicks going off in my nostalgic brain watching this. The wrong OS won back then.
I bought one of these a week ago but could not get it working. After watching your Fantastic, step by step tutorial, I finally got it up and going. I found that I could not simply connect it to my network, as I have several routers. It has to be connected directly to one of the 4 ports on my NBN Router. Also I am using AWEB 3.5 Browser, coz iBrowse just crashes on my system, running OS3.9 Thanks Again.
this is certainly not a vanilla A500, can't remember that it was shipped with 128mb fast-ram ;-)
Good video. Maybe make your hardware specs more readily available beforehand though.
+1, but you should definitely share what setup this is on, versions of software, etc.
Cool gadget for the A500 and great video! Well explained :)
What Dell monitor is that? Capable of support 15 KHz screenmodes or do you have a scan doubler attached?
Nice video! Whats that "autocomplete" function you are using in shell? Never saw THAT before! I want it! ;)
Great video! What is your Amiga setup? I thought that IBrowse 2.4 do not work on 68000?
Very impressed with the speeds, much better setup on all fronts compared to the pi. Its got me interested in having it. I wonder if this could be used with Amiga Explorer as a way to transfer files from PC to Amiga as well...
Shot97 good call..ill set up Amiga Explorer and see if i can make this work. in theory it should. I dont really use Amiga Explorer these days since all of my Amigas either have compact flash or some kind of networking and i just usually FTP to my PC
Interesting little gadget.
This is helpful, getting me to understand better the various options...
Since my A2000 doesn't have an accelerator card, the MiamiDX won't run on it... :(
I was wondering if you used a terminal program with it.? I have the gurunet that uses the same device driver and got it working after I figured out that I had a bad cia chip.. I want to use telenet for a term program and to run a bbs.
Awesome review!
Nice! I need to get one of those. Or maybe two. :)
how you got miamidx working on a500 ? Have you got accelerator?
Same question as some of the others. What is the config of this A500?
Thanks,
Robert
Awesome video! I was wondering if you were going to pick one of these up. I saw a guy on A.org selling them recently.
Todd Gill yeah i think its the same seller whos selling them on eBay. good guy and the hardware is solid. definitely recommended
And...¿What key or combination of keys do you press, to access the quick menu and choose files?
Is this a stock Amiga 500 or does this setuo require any accelerator?
would this work for connecting via ssh to a remote machine where i have IRC etc running?
Is this still the best solution for A1200 (030 128mb)?
How did you intsall iBrowse on your A500? The 2.4 version available right now just will not install for me. Any advice is appreciated.
How do I get ip, gateway n netmask info with Amiga?
have you tried odyssey browser?
Is it a vanilla 500?
what more people want its faster than dialup back then and floppies still same fast
How can I get telnet working for my bbs?
Anyone got a tutorial on setting up a virginmedia router for the plipbox?
Is there a wifi solution yet?
use this and an ethernet to wi fi adapter
Now all you need is Hunter game, made to online version :D
Not a stock A500
This is a disgusting misdirection. This is NOT an Amiga500 - Don't waste your time following the instructions only to find out a bog standard A500 or A500+ doesn't have enough RAM when it came out the box.
Why all this farting around with old dead computers? I can get online in seconds with my smartphone, set up ebay ads and be gone before the police officer sees me texting! My friends' computer repair business failed because people aren't even buying computers anymore!
Jeff Karrow, because we can.
you never had an Amiga, did you? You can't understand
why you watching if you aren't a retro guy? Just a Troll looking for a place to whine about $#!T you know nothing about? Thought so...
Are you aware that people have hobbies?
