There's just something peaceful and warm about seeing BBS screens render on an old CRT. I really miss those days! As others have said here - so much to learn and enjoy when you're a child!

Fantastic vlog. I was the sysop of Metnet BBS - Jon Witty - from 1988 til 1997 , before that was Metnet on Compunet. It was operated on an Amiga 4000 68060 with an A2232 and many hard drives. Ten phone lines ran into it from my little flat in Hull, UK. There was also an ISDN line in later years with telnet accessibility to it. It was the largest free system in the UK and no piracy was allowed. Those ANSI menus took a long time to create, especially the same space invaders animation for the games section. Metnet operated on Mebbsnet software and was the UK support and also support for MUD systems. Later became support BBS for Son of Spong that was the Amiga Format magazine. I recall they gave me a free hard drive for the privilige. Lots of stories and history. I have decided to create a website telling the story and hopefully to recreate the system (at least on a small scale) . You have inspired me today... Thanks..

I connected my A1200 to the net back in 1993. I remember the early web browser pointed its temp directory to the RAM disk. It would fill up and crash so I had to remap it to my hard drive which worked but blimey it was slow and pounded the snot out of my 80mb hard drive.
I still remember the first BBS I called. It was in Ireland and I downloaded the “Jesus on E’s” demo as my trader friend somehow never got hold of it. For that reason it’ll always be my favourite demo.

I remember using this computer as well as my Vic20. These were the early days of personal computing and Internet before the masses. We lived on public assistance and all my well off relatives gave me money for Christmas and I was able to buy one. This computer felt like some magical alien technology from across the universe which had the power to transport me to other worlds.

It's dead now, but I'm working on bringing it back to life, but my Amiga 3000 was permanently connected to the Internet from around 1994 till the early 2000's, and I ran a multi-line BBS.
It is also possible to get 802.11b drivers for the Avaya/Orinoco/Proxim 16 bit PCMCIA cards, for use in Amiga 600's and 1200's

My Amiga days, don't want to know the hours I've spend on them, from the 500 until the mighty 4000. You've done a great job showing and describing the BBS emotions, not being owned by big corporate dollars yet, I miss it. Subscribed!

Nice to see you back! There are a lot of highly polished, well produced channels these days, all of which I love. But I missed your casual style just hanging out in the computer room. Few people can do that style well. Usually its just someone rambling, with a lot of "umm" "ahh..." in a dark room. awkward jump cuts, etc. It takes practice to make scripted feel unscripted but still engaging, seem-less and fluid. I know its simple skills. But obviously practiced well.

I remember getting my Amiga 1200 and USR Sportster 14400 connected in 94/95 to a dial up modem rack at Dundee Uni where I was studying. Allowed a remote session onto one of the Sun Sparcs that was internet connected and Telneting into chat BBSs like Brinta and Skynet (and occasionally doing C++). So much study time wasted on chatting to people all over the world, was mind blowing at the time!

When I was in high school (Aus) in the early 90's I recall I did maybe 1 or 2 classes of creative writing on electric typewriters.
Then the teachers ushered us into another classroom from then on which was decked out with apple macintosh pc's.
With a choice of floppy or hard drive, it was alien to me, then within a few years again we had laser disc home theatre systems & home gaming consoles. My first was a nintendo 64 which came pre loaded with a game called "Alex the kid".
Could complete the entire game in under 40 minutes LOL.
Now I can connect to the internet from almost anywhere on the planet with a small device I can fit in my pocket.
My teachers would have put me in detention if I'd tried to explain modern tech to them back then.
At least my childhood taught me how to use a compass, read a street map & I knew exactly where all my local telephone boxes were in case of an emergency!

I remember my first connection (with my Amiga 500) to a BBS (2400 baud modem)... And it was a blast! Uploading something you just made, and perhaps (sometimes there was Down/Uploading ratio which sucked) downloading new stuff... I think it was my second time and I had hard time with the BBS menu system (I tried stuff I was not privileged to do basically... But I did not know that)... Anyway the BBS admin looked at my weird tries and tribulations and started to chat with me... I was OMG! this is cool! I asked me what I wanted to do... I told him and we had a small constructive chat and then he made me a privileged member (almost admin status :-). In the early 90's that was really great! So I had to make my own BBS on my Amiga (can't remember which terminal program I used, but it had a wonderful AREXX port in later development which was awesome) so I could relive that moment with a user and me as admin :-)

You could then select the files you wanted from the list and mark them for download. Also you could write messages and such in the program. So when you clicked activate bbs the program called up the bbs, did the login, sendt the messages, downloaded the files, and closed the line. Everything automatically, it saved us alot of money. I think theres still the free version of it around somewhere, maybe on aminet?

Issue with todays web pages is that they are very resource heavy to use and can't really be used without beefing up your Amiga, mine had a 68060 with 16megs of RAM and even back then in -96 it already had issues with web pages loading.

i was watching one of your earlier videos and i saw you have a dreamcast. Considering you have brought the mighty A500 back online, i think now it's time to bring the dreamcast back online, since there is now an easy solution to do that (the dreampi), don't you think so? :)

Brilliant video Dan, that modem is gold and lets make BBS popular again, no in-your-face Ads and constant distractions, the Internet used to be for geeks, its become a corporate, political awful place

I never got the chance to do any of this back in the days, never having owned an Amiga or in fact any computer that could have gone online. This probably sounds like a dumb question but how does Baud rate compare to kb/s? For instance what would 9600 baud be in kb/s?
