I had a red 1998 4dr, XLT similar to this one. Leased new, then bought it. Loved that car. Sounded and looked a lot like this one (except my front arm rest was broken, not missing :) ). You gave me PTSD when you started it. Mine got me through blizzards, deep snow, and long summer road trips with ease and confidence. It made 3 feet of new snow fun! And looked sexy doing it. Something about that red/black combo with blackout trim, dark tint windows, bright alum rims, and white letter Wranglers just looked like-art. I think '98 is the year Ford got the body style right. Ran great, but needed care from someone with more auto skills than me. Auctioned it for charity a month ago, hoping it would find a new owner who shared my affection for it. She still looked great. It was bought by a parts yard to be picked apart. Deserved better. Breaks my heart. Prob best Explorer on the lot. Wish you'd had it instead.
I have a 1999 Explorer Sport 4.0l OHV it’s in excellent shape AC Is fantastic and I’ve towed over 4,000lbs for 6 hours straight and it does absolutely perfect it’s such a reliable truck a beautiful piece of engineering it was my dream truck for many years and the 2nd gen is the best body style in my opinion
plz someone see this comment and replied. ok so I'm wantong to buy a 1998 ford explorer sport. first vehicle that has 4x4 ive drove. the little knob was pointing to auto on the one I test drove like in this video. but the way this guy pulled out seemed smooth. the one I test drove seemed stuck in like a low gear like it was trying to drive through mud. took second for the vehicle to really get going. and felt sluggish. so is that because its automatically in 4x4 all the time? am I missing something? I dont wanna buy it and drive it wrong and mess it up? plz help
I don't care what anyone says, I love the explorer a lot. When I was 10 my parents got a 99 explorer eddie bauer trim with a 5.0 V8, I was a bit surprised when we towed home a 27' travel trailer with it. Unfortunately it got wrecked in December 08, right after it got paid off. I'm gonna start driving soon and am considering getting this as my first car. Only complaint I can see with the sport is the painted trim around the headlights, I would swap it for the chrome one on the XLT. Nice video.
My dad used to have a reddish orange 1999 Ford Explorer sport with grey leather interior until I was 2 and I remember it a little. My grandfather used to have a either a 95 or a 96 green 4 door explorer.
I just noticed that the driver and passenger doors on the two door model are longer then the ones on the 4 door model. This whole time I thought they were the same size.

Great video Kyle! If I may offer an idea, you should incorporate exhaust clips into every video you make. Every engine has their own distinct tone and you should capture that, no matter what engine is in the car/SUV/truck. Just a suggestion.
I know this is going to sound silly, but how did you open the rear glass panel? I've had my 2000 Explorer Sport for about 2 months now and I still haven't figured it out yet. XD Awesome video, thanks for uploading!
@jwjustlookin he started it with the door open. if you leave it running or something like the check engine light comes on that's the sound that chimes.
@jwjustlookin The sound following the initial chimes is the door ajar sound. Most Ford's of this time period and even still today (I think the Ranger only still makes this sound) carryout this tone sounding. I know its a little late, but I hope that this helps.
@jwjustlookin Im generally sure that it's not the door chime but it's actually the Check Engine beep that is warning you. I can't see for sure but it looks to me like the check engine light is on at the top of the speedo and tacho.
@jwjustlookin It is a sound that the car makes if the driver is not wearing his/her seat belt when the car is turned on. It goes away after a short while.
@jwjustlookin I think its just something telling you the chime is done or something. It happens on all Fords of the time, pretty much. Who knows it is weird though isnt it?
@henshalldood this Explorer has the base model 160hp V6 (4.0L Cologne pushrod V6) and yours has the optional 205hp V6 (4.0L Cologne SOHC V6). the pushrod version like in this one IS gutless. the SOHC is quick.
plz someone see this comment and replied. ok so I'm wantong to buy a 1998 ford explorer sport. first vehicle that has 4x4 ive drove. the little knob was pointing to auto on the one I test drove like in this video. but the way this guy pulled out seemed smooth. the one I test drove seemed stuck in like a low gear like it was trying to drive through mud. took second for the vehicle to really get going. and felt sluggish. so is that because its automatically in 4x4 all the time? am I missing something? @jlee5323 He's not selling anything, he just gives unbiased reviews so the people who are curious about these vehicles can see. Also a bit of his opinion. Your just a genius aren't you.
nope. the pushrod was standard across the line from 95-01 and was optional for all years and all trim levels except the limited...that came with the 5.0L V8 from 96-98 then the SOHC became standard in the limited from 99-01 with the 5.0L optional.
i own a 1999 honda civic lx it has a decent bit of problems my buddy wants to trade my civic for his 1998 ford explorer and it doesn’t need really any work at all. is it worth it though?
@saabkyle04 That's basically a chime for when ever a light on the dash comes on, like, if any of the doors are open it will be like that, my explorer does the same thing.
@saabkyle04 I owned a '96 Ranger that made the same start up chime. I seem to remember it only chimed like that when the vehicle was started with the driver's door open.
@saabkyle04 Lets compare a 2001 Chrysler 300m and a 2001 Ford Taurus. To me Chrysler always does really good with design, like the 300m was very stylish and still looks good to me, but the older Taurus is a sleeper. But you are entitled to your opinion
I'd say OHV 4.0l. I have a 2001 Sport Trac with the SOHC 4.0 and it clearly says 4.0l SOHC on the intake cover, this truck's engine doesn't, it has 4.0l embossed on the intake manifold instead.
wts up so have you ever had someone that watches your videos come down and buy a car from the dealership or even look at one!!! please answer! thanks!!!!
***** i know you have a dealership or something somewhere in northcarolina i believe, which city? because i really would like to get my next car from your family's lot
Kyle, you make me appreciate used and older cars more then ever lol. thanks for all the work you put into these vids, keep it up!

We still have ours it's from 2000 and it still runs
I have a 1999 Explorer Sport 4.0l OHV it’s in excellent shape AC Is fantastic and I’ve towed over 4,000lbs for 6 hours straight and it does absolutely perfect it’s such a reliable truck a beautiful piece of engineering it was my dream truck for many years and the 2nd gen is the best body style in my opinion
I love the Explorer so much V6 or V8, I grew up with the V6 one and love the sound of it on a cold start.
Man that Sport was clean! Such a great condition car! As a child, my old babysitter used to have a 2 door Explorer Sport that I loved.

Who would dislike this, good old saabkyle04 babyyy
I have one and they do not die. Great car!
Like I said before, I really loved these SUVs and I find that they look so nice and also I must say that it is in very pristine condition.
I like these vehicles more! Terrific job bro.
i wish they made 2dr things like these right now.
KyleTVProductions I
The 4 door SUVS are better than the 2 door one
The 4 door ones are way cooler then the 2 door ones
Avian Reynolds ?
Awesome. I love me some Ford Explorers.
nice suv kyle in great condition!! LIKE AND CLEAN AND SHINY!!
makes me miss my explorer
I just noticed that the driver and passenger doors on the two door model are longer then the ones on the 4 door model. This whole time I thought they were the same size.
Just picked a ‘99 for $1k! It has 156k miles but still running strong
My brother has a '99 Mountaineer V8 with only 127k miles still running good

I love Ford's
NWS storm chaser sorry to hear that
@jwjustlookin tht chime u heard after the door chime is to remind u tht the one of the doors is open. :D
Great video Kyle! If I may offer an idea, you should incorporate exhaust clips into every video you make. Every engine has their own distinct tone and you should capture that, no matter what engine is in the car/SUV/truck. Just a suggestion.
I own 1 of these and she still runs good
fords are awesome.
@jwjustlookin it is the "Door Ajar" chime. It just lets you know that a door in the vehicle is open
Second gen Ford Explorers (including the sport version) are very interesting vehicles because its interior dash reminds me of the Ranger.
Couple of questions:
1. Do the rear seats fold flat?
2. This one was 2WD?
Yes
Yes
@CascadiaTrucker Hmm, I love the painted trim around the headlights on my Sport. But to each his own. I'd kinda like to see that swap though.
This is the car I wanna buy once I start driving.
How much would it be to put a stronger engine in it ? And how much would it cost ?
@jwjustlookin That sound lets you know that your door is open, or if both are closed then opened or one is opened it makes that noise.
@jwjustlookin The sound following the initial chimes is the door ajar sound. Most Ford's of this time period and even still today (I think the Ranger only still makes this sound) carryout this tone sounding. I know its a little late, but I hope that this helps.
Awesome trucks , i have a sport in black and its pretty good on gas
@jwjustlookin Im generally sure that it's not the door chime but it's actually the Check Engine beep that is warning you. I can't see for sure but it looks to me like the check engine light is on at the top of the speedo and tacho.
I think they should have called the Explorer Sport the Bronco 3
🍊🍊🍊
not a bad name
@doinken Pathetic name!
It's an okay name.
@Joe0079 I think there is a release under the nook for the lisence plate and u pull that and it'll release.
@jwjustlookin this chime sounds when a door is open
@jwjustlookin it might have been either a seatbelt, or maybe airbag chime.
the 2.9L and 4.0L are both cologne V6's they are in the same engine family
@jwjustlookin yeah that's the door chime, we've had Fords for years
I can tell a lot of that stuff are options. I have a 1999 Explorer Sport and it doesn't have the cruise, the electric seats, or 4x4.
@jwjustlookin It is a sound that the car makes if the driver is not wearing his/her seat belt when the car is turned on. It goes away after a short while.
I thought that the 4L Cologne pushrod was discontinued since the previous model and that the 4L SOHC was standard?
is this still for sale? if so how much? and where are you located?
@jwjustlookin Ford made a different door chime for when the doors where open.
@saabkyle04 I believe that it's the chime for not having a seat belt, but I may be wrong too.
@saabkyle04 The last long chime only sounds if the door is open as you're starting the car

@saabkyle04 it lets you know that the Initial engine startup check passed and you are ready to roll
@jwjustlookin That sound is the warning that one of the doors is open.
@jlee5323 He's not selling anything, he just gives unbiased reviews so the people who are curious about these vehicles can see. Also a bit of his opinion.
Your just a genius aren't you.

nice video, and i really liked the four door, except that the engine didnt sound to good
i own a 1999 honda civic lx it has a decent bit of problems my buddy wants to trade my civic for his 1998 ford explorer and it doesn’t need really any work at all. is it worth it though?
@saabkyle04 That's basically a chime for when ever a light on the dash comes on, like, if any of the doors are open it will be like that, my explorer does the same thing.
I own a 99 sport in blue (fading). 300k+drug dealer (previous owner)=still running.
Now that's what I call built Ford touch
@tonytiger2004 yeah the 4.0 sohc have timing chain tensioner issue , the 4.0 ohv does not period lol.
Is it possible for you to make a comparison test to the 93 explorer?
its missing the cover for the engine on top....
It seems someone tried to yank it off instead of unbolt it, so it is missing the other half that must have broken off.
@jwjustlookin its the suspension leveling
the 1995-2003 Ford Explorer Sport was assembled in
Louisville, Kentucky, United States
St. Louis, Missouri, United States
Valencia, Venezuela
nice cd player. mine is still running. STR8 GEAR
@jwjustlookin i believe it's for the driver to know that his seatbelt is off or so i always thought :p or it could be the door chime too
that thing looks brand new
@Annihilator1111 The Cologne? So that's the Same Engine (Or at least engine block) as the 2.9L Ranger?.
But you are entitled to your opinion
the engine on the 1995-2001 1995-2001 for Sport Ford Explorer
Engine
4.0 L Cologne V6
5.0 L Windsor V8
any dealership updates coming soon?
Do the back seats fold down
hey kyle have you found any ford ecursions yet
Dude, at 1:36...Leaking water and White smoke??? That's a big red flag that there's a problem with the head gasket
I can't tell does this have the OHV 4.0 V6 or the SOHC 4.0 V6
It's the OHV V6.
I'd say OHV 4.0l. I have a 2001 Sport Trac with the SOHC 4.0 and it clearly says 4.0l SOHC on the intake cover, this truck's engine doesn't, it has 4.0l embossed on the intake manifold instead.
Got one today same color
I am a Ford fan.
Tyler Johnson me to
@jwjustlookin I dont think its any thing, I had a 95 and it did the same thing, I think its to warn you your seat belt isnt on.
If i were you it would be so hard not to take some cars for myself
mine is a 97 sohc and its automatic and its so much louder than this one... i wonder why? cuz this sounds really gutless and i have no upgrades either
we have two of these
@saabkyle04 Seatbelt chime maybe?
I Want The 2017 Explorer But Black
@SocietyFailing nah man the check engine light is in the bottom right corner.
@jwjustlookin its the car computer beeping
