Barn Find 1996 Ford Explorer - No Crank - FIRST START IN 10 YEARS!

- We got our hands on a 1996 2 door Ford Explorer with the 4.0L and 4wd. This truck has not run in several years (best guess is about 10). We gave her the revival treatment and gave her the first start since she was parked.
Once running we have to get passed a P1151 code, but we got her running and even got a valid New Jersey state inspection sticker on her.

I also had a 96 two door. Tough truck , I drove mine off a five foot high loading dock on accident, got some cosmetics fixed and kept driving it for years. To me the interior was very ahead of the competition back in the day.
You know what, I agree about the interior. It is very comfortable and put together well. All over it is a well built truck

Im a bit amazed, got a 95,for 300.00 one osner, everything works. Replaced sway bars an voila,, its Ford tough.

I got a 97 I was in a blizzard hit black ice on a mountain pass bucked into and out of the ditch on the right I saw my passengers head slam into the ceiling. We coulda spun back over the other side of the road and down a 100 yards into a canyon but somehow we landed back on the road just fine w a smashed front head lamp. Taped it back together finished the drive rode fine.

Love those 90s and early 00's explorers. Super reliable. We had one with the 5.0... love the way they drive.
The shop replaced a bad O2 sensor with another bad o2 sensor... That's why they musta thought it was a vacuum leak. Then they tested it for vacuum and that was good so they gave up... "Electrical problems".
Seems like it, right? Just another reason why it pays to work on your own stuff. Poor guys sent a good truck down the road over a $30 o2 sensor

I'm not an explorer lover, but I did buy one a 99, for two grand with 89k miles on it, just hoping I didn't waste 2k
Those steel hooks are for the factory jack to lift the vehicle up and no manual 5 speeds with the 5.0 liter option were ever built in these.That would have been way too much fun!
It was an option. I've seen them personally. Even with the 4 doors. It's a rare option, but it does exist.
@@SkylineFTW97 If your talking about the 5.0 engine with a manual trans in the explorer you most definitely did not see it.It was only avail with an automatic..Call Ford and ask them.Now they did make the 4.0 V6 with a manual and lots of them..I had a black 4 door manual once and still have two 2 door sports with the 5 speed.

@@SkylineFTW97 Like I said..call ford and ask them but I guess they will be wrong also..Look at it like this,what trans woukd they have used??They didnt have any for the 5.0 and explorer and these are past the years they could have borrowed them from the truck line..I'm not saying you didnt see one but if you did it wasnt ford that built it that way and they only had one ECM for the 302 explorer and that's strictly for automatic.

2001 Ford Explorer sport initially was a winter driving gift for the GF i started diving it and it's my daily driver ever since.
The fact that it still has body mounts is utterly amazing. Those are ALWAYS shot.
They're rustbuckets. My dad bought a '92 explorer 5-speed brand new, and it was already badly rusted by around 2000.

I got a red 98 explorer 2 door manual that runs and drives well, only a few sensors need replaced
I prefer the 1999 to 2001 four door Explorers.
I've had an explorer. My regret is getting rid of it. I'm a tride and true Jeeper but I do miss that truck.

I won't get rid of mine! I have 2002 Explorer sport, have had it 17 years and have 175,000 miles on it no issues with engine or trans but everything electrical is going haywire! LOL
its pretty much a modified PLAY truck now but ill keep it until its done
I have a 97 ford explorer 5.0 speedometer went out at 300000 miles amd still starts this day just need another power steering pump amd water pump lol
I have a 97 man I kinda wish this thing would blow up and leave me alone.
I had a 1998 xlt 4 door, was the second owner and it served me well for 8 years with no major issues, mine had the 5.0 v8. Had to sell it for parts because the rust was just getting worse and worse. I miss her though. When I sold her she had 223k miles on her and the engine was still going strong.
those old Explorers are pretty strong trucks. The pushrod 4.0L is a tank of an engine, they are hard to kill. The Upgraded SOHC version of the 4.0L is fairly strong, but has several flaws in the Timing chain setup. My stepdad has a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with 213k miles. It gets driven daily and never has let my stepdad down. All i can say is that he's replaced the control arms, fuel pump, water pump, radiator. Other than that the truck has been running strong since he bought it in 2015, Bought it with 150k miles.
The power steering pump went out on my dad's 94 Explorer once when my family was picking up our 1999 explorer from the dealer. How convenient!

@@DEInTheGarage They good reliable dailys for most part. Take mine off road ground clearance what always gets me in a tough spot tho. Only explorers that came with limited slip is the limited explorers I believe in the rear. Auto its rwd until slip then sends power to front. Can definitely feel when it does.
I was geting 20 mpg in this thing last week in 2wd mode! I was blown away. great little commuter truck
@@DEInTheGarage Damn! I avg 15.5 in my 99 limited but got falken wild peak a/t tires, and all city driving. Just gotta hunt down my abs light problem guessing wiring since has all new sensors and computer and got passenger airbag light occasionally popping on only when its 90 degrees or hotter. But can't complain. Paid 700 bucks for it year ago and nvr left me stranded and nothing has broken since I've owned it.
If you can pick it up cheap , like D did , go for it . Nice little truck , for as long as they last .
My Explorer is a 1993 4.0 and it has 233k. Driven daily I love it.
That “hook-thingy” on lower control arm... is for the jack that comes with the exploder... it’s a bottle jack
My first vehicle was a 92 Explorer 4WD 4 door with the 4.0 and I still miss it. They are slow, but those 4.0s are faithful. Survived 2.5 years of my stupid high school shenanigans and still ran like a top when we sold her on at 212k miles. To this day probably one of the most comfortable vehicles I have owned. Have been on the lookout for another one, but they are tough to find in good shape.

I got a 95 Explorer Expedition Sport Trac 4x4 v6 4.0 OHV. (One time made with the weird name lol). Has moon roof, leather seat, number code pad on door for locking/unlocking. Super clean no stain or damage on inside even door panels. 145k original miles not bad for a 95 vehicle. Not a single sign of leak. Guy gave me for $200 because transmission gave up. I rebuilt it myself slowly only bad part was bands. Now it runs like a champ!

I love these old Explorers, and I daily a 98 locked 4Runner lol
The Second Gen 4WD Explorers as far as I'm aware came standard with Limited Slip in the rear and that fancy variable locking center. The Auto mode wasn't necessarily all time 4WD but it did keep the front hubs locked so that it could compare slippage from both Front and Back and correct as needed. The 4.0 OHV was not very powerful (160hp) but it was enough to get it going and was very dependable. From the factory a lot of your important stuff is already gonna have skids underneath so just grabs some tires and you're ready to hit the trail. I have a 97 4WD XLT and you can push these things very far, I worked in Cable in very rural Country in South East TN and GA and I could climb a mountain if I wanted to.
People give these old Explorers a hard time but the Second Gen had some notable historic importance to the US Car Industry. Continuing the US's SUV Crazy while also being the first Vehicle in the states to feature a 5 Speed Automatic. Their specs and my personal experience with them both on/off road for work proves that these were some of the last true truck based SUVs, and imho a worthy successor to the Old Body Style Broncos.

A friends s10 trucks needed 4low for the same hills my 94 ranger with the 4.0 v6 4x4 just needed 4 hi. Very capable platform
Limited slip was optional. The "variable locking center" was a clutch pack in those that had 4 auto mode. It engaged the front axle, and used the wheel speed sensors from the ABS to sense speed differences front/rear to variably lock the clutch pack in the transfer case to send power up front. The system functioned pretty well, it was the vacuum locking front hubs that were the failure of that system as well as the Ranger's 4WD system, both were plagued by those same vacuum locking hub failures for several years till Ford finally woke up and just went to a front live axle like the Jeeps have. There are ways to circumvent those vacuum hubs of course.
Their 5 speed automatic was plagued by failures since they continued to use a terrible transmission base as they continued along....they took a C3 and turned it into a A4LD, which was a 3 speed with electronic overdrive, they then turned the A4LD into the 5R55E and continued with the terrible electronic gremlins throughout. Course there are now shift kits and rebuild kits that fix all the shortcomings of these transmissions, but to keep running a stock transmission in them is at your own risk, they're a ticking time bomb even more so if they haven't been properly maintained, have been overheated, and have been overloaded...many don't have an auxiliary transmission cooler which is another great way to overheat them....adding an auxiliary cooler and a good rebuild and they'll last a long time.
@False Flag Depends on the year of Explorer, some had auto locking vacuum actuated hubs, later models had no hubs. The clutch pack was a better option to a point, but when the clutch pack failed you had no 4WD, where if the viscous coupler failed in the V8 AWD models you had 4WD just more of a part time system as severe binding was an issue with a failed viscous coupler, same thing that plagues the NP/NV249 transfer cases in Jeep Grand Cherokees.
Found a 2000 2WD 2 door on the side of the road and bought it. Was sitting for two years. Luckily has the older OHV engine. Threw a battery in and drives no problem, no CEL.
Needed new shocks all around and the wheel bearings repacked but they are tanks! Been driving a ‘98 Ranger for 12 years with no issues.
Basically the same condition as mine! needs shocks and possibly another leaf in the rear
D&E In The Garage the Monroe extra load shocks with the coil over springs fixed my saggy butt issue. The 2wd has that problem worse than the 4wd and no need for an extra leaf now.
The part about Iowa where you drive 4 counties over with no plates or anything is totally accurate.
A few years ago I drove 4 hours in a 1998 Oldsmobile 88 I paid very little for and passed countless state troopers and cops. Now tinted windows don't even think about it lol. But I love this Ford you got! But I'm a Ford guy who somehow found your channel interesting 😂

Great add to the family fleet, those old 4.0’s were fairly built proof motors. The transmission was the weak spot, believe it or not they are 5-speed autos that behave as 4-speeds. If your going to keep it I suggest a pan drop and filter change.
Also side note the sound was fine on my end, a little rattly on the test drive but I heard every word.

This truck will have the 4R55E since it’s the 1996 model. The 5r55e came out with the junk 4.0 SOHC. 4r55e was decent. It may even have a drain plug on the converter. The V8s got the 4r70w - one of the better transmissions ford ever made

D , your a loyal Jeep guy , I am too , don't hurt , Jeeps got feelings . I got three now , my two CJ5 projects and my " trusty " '92 XJ . The XJ leaves it's mark where ever I go , everytime I close the door . Rust droppings . But i still love it . Changed parts that I've already changed , but still love it . A/C wiring harness under the dash flaked out AGAIN , but I still love it . Can't beat the 4.0 liter , AW4 , np242 and 8 1/4 Chrysler . It's still not its time . Everytime I fix it , it says " hell no ! I won't go ! " .

This explorer is absolutely lovely and tough for sitting a decade. My dad has one of them from the same year that is also a 2 door and it probably has around 400K miles on it by now though the odometer went out a long time ago so we do not know for sure if it really has 400K miles on it but unfortunately it has seen much better days compared to the condition this particular Explorer is in. However, the car still runs and can still be driven today despite the car being worn out. In fact, I am considering driving a car like this when I am old enough to start driving because of how cool it is and how dependable it is.
Edit: I also want to mention that I have memories of riding in my dad's explorer as well when I was a younger kid so these really are nostalgia boxes.

I just purchased a 1997 Explorer XLT 2WD with 90k miles on the 4.0 Liter. It's my every day driver now. Replaced the Cruise Control buttons on the steering wheel for less than 20 bucks. Needs a headliner, that's about it!

That hook is an OEM Jack Lift Point I use is for the jack stand sometimes if not under the Lower Control Arms I own a 98 XLT 4 Door.

Nice truck. I'm particularly fond of Fords myself. HOWEVER.... I've been keeping my eye open for a gen-1 Nissan Pathfinder. The two-door with the little triangle windows. I bought one back in 1987 when they first came out and I have always regretted letting it go. If I EVER find another one....

From my years of working on the second-gen Rangers and then being told 4 years ago the 1991--94 Ford Explorers used the same motor and transmission, I was sold on the first-gen explorer. I had 2 that had this problem if you have no start on the key switch. The first thing to do is drop the column and replace the neutral safety switch. It's the one thing that feeds power to everything after you turn the Key switch.
Nice find Doug, i love the Explorers and have had a 98 and a 2000 when i was in Ontario and now in Alberta Calgary for 8 yrs and bought a 2001 Limited with 133,000klms when i was 1st here. Now has 265,000 no rust and no problems with regular oil changes etc and everything works, i love it.

Older explorers are tons reliable, (surprised this one wasn’t working) my grandmother had one for 20+ years and ran great.
I bought a 96 sport just like this new off the showroom floor. I love it, but my stepson has it now. Yours is so much cleaner. The headliner in mine is a lot worse. I replaced the 96 with a 01 XLT. Great video!

My 1988 Ford Bronco 2 has its own separate rear washer reservoir as well. Took me a while to figure it out because its not like you can remove a door cover to see it in my Bronco 2, yeah you can remove the interior trim & molding from the inside to get to it but its a PITA. The wiper hadn't worked in it for I have no Idea how long, possibly since new. I was messing around with it one day, thought I'd start tracing wires, pulled the rear molding down off the ceiling, found a connector that goes back to the wiper/washer/defroster, started testing more, traced a dead wire which turned out to be a ground wire which was just flopping around back there in the ceiling, not attached to anything and obviously never was as there wasn't a hole anywhere that it could have been screwed to....so a wire eyelet and self-tapping screw and I have a working rear wiper...the rear defroster still doesn't work though which I was really hoping I'd get fixed as that rear window fogs up pretty bad in cold weather, as does both side windows. I love my Bronco 2 (the predecessor to the Explorer...err Exploder). My parents had a 95 Ford Explorer and apparently was rare or something because I've yet to find another anywhere. It had 2WD, 4auto, 4hi, and 4lo...everything else I've ran across has 2WD, auto, and low, or auto, and low, or 2WD, hi, and low. So many weird combinations I guess they were just throwing whatever transfer cases they could find in or something.

I had no windows on my explorer. Checked all the fuses and power to the window motors and found that I had a bad gem module. No interior lights, power windows, cruise or anything really. So glad I got it fixed it is my favorite vehicle
had a 98 sport, was a complete piece. that being said the truck was a absolute beast in the snow, and that's all i have to say about that.
Dude thx I just bought this same car for $300 alive and running well but you helped me find out how to diagnose a couple things.
I have a 1998 Eddie Bower 4 door explorer limited edition, it has 156.000 klm"s and its in mint condition until a hail storm did some real damage just to the hood and roof. It also knocked out the drivers side mirror and the 3rd tail light. Here in Ontario Canada its not easy to get parts for these things but mine has no rust, the four wheel drive has driven in severe snow storms without any problems. It still runs like new and its 26 years old. I wouldn't give it up for anything. Just need to find those two parts. They really do just keep running.

I have an Explorer myself. Mines a 2007 Eddie Bauer with almost 136k miles, however mine has the SOHC version of that 4.0 V6. With yours being a 1996 I'm guessing it has the OHV 4.0 V6 that many adore. Great trucks and are absolute tanks in the snow
Yes, I believe this is one of the last OHV 4.0's I am told there are advantages to both motors

I had a sport just like this, but with a five speed. I loved it, and drove it all over. Packed up my room in college many times with all the space the folded down seats gave.
My first car had vacuum leaks , 84 Chevette, and we used electrical tape on every vacuum line, the whole way down. Ran it that way till the head cracked. And had the engine rebuilt 3 years later. And this was in the 90s
I have a 99 xlt with the 4.0 and auto and it’s nothing but reliable fun. I’ve put some mud tires on it and have a blast in the woods here in central jersey. Been daily driving it for almost two years with no major problems just general maintenance. It’s got 128k miles(101k when I bought it) and it just goes and does what I need it to do. Love this truck.
Nice find, Doug! Yeah, Explorers will always have a place in my heart ever since having bought a 2002 back in April of '08 when my ZJ's trans was about to give up the ghost. I drove that '02 Explorer XLT daily until I sold it in mid 2018. I used to see them as "the enemy" being Grand Cherokee's main competition and all, but that sweet '02 with the 4.6L V8 treated me quite well, doing everything I ever asked of her and giving very few problems the entire time I owned her. I will say that Ford has always looked dated with their interiors on the explorers. The ZJ looked far more modern inside than that 2nd gen Explorer you have, and even a little more modern than my 3rd gen. Anyways, enjoy, I'll bet you end up falling in love with it like the stray puppy that finds its way to your door step in a rain storm that everyone swears they're not going to keep!
Yea bud. I can get behind the explorer. Definitely a main running mate for the GC. Their evolutions have kind of synced up and they are super similar today
I’ve now purchased 4 of these body style - all 5.0 V8s - 96, 97, 99, 00. All but the 97 were AWD. Unfortunately they never offered a Stick with the V8 nor selectable 4WD. Either AWD or 2WD for the V8s. And they are BEASTS in the snow. Two I sold to a very good friend in Syracuse NY for winter rides - I live in SC. So while the interior will be baked as much as the paint, the drivetrain will be fantastic. That 4.0 was a carryover from the prior gen - and thankfully the better engine - 4.0 OHV. The 4.0 SOHC they released in 97 is the biggest pile of junk - toilet motor. While the SOHC is faster, it’s garbage mainly for its timing chain guides that fall apart. Then ford made it worse when they put a chain and tension on the BACK of the motor. The 95-7s had some nicely trimmed out interiors. By 98/99 you could tell the quality was dropping - cheapening out. The cruise buttons always do that - they sell brand new replacements on eBay and Amazon for $20-30 - easy to replace. You scored well for a Jersey truck. Enjoy the ride!
Yea, from what I understand only 95-96 got the 2wd option. I am a big fan of it. I forgot to mention in the video that I was getting 20 MPG commuting in that thing!
I disagree my first car/truck was a 03 explorer sport 4x4 being 15 with a learners permit and thinking I was Ken block, drifting, burnouts, 0-100 pulls more times then I can count. And never had a single problem except the thermostat housing. Fast forward two years after I rolled the 03, bought a 02 explorer sport 4x2 for stupid cheap. Guess what 17 now and aint shit changed except my job drove all over florida with a trailer and usually a lift/elevator on it. Flooring it onto highways, dogging it in swaps and mud, running from cops in forests. Also racing it in the town I lived in almost everyday. Neither of these trucks had one easy day without being floored or beaten and I seen 180k out of the 03 stock everything death by rolling, and 205k out of the 02 death due to my sister not ln knowing wtf a temperature gauge is. One of the best beater/ cheaper trucks you can buy. #fuckblazers. 4.0ftw
I have a 98 2dr 4x4 besides few minor issues its been very reliable for the last 3 yrs had it and only paid $1600 for it. Good work truck and good in snow/ bad weather
Love the find, still have my 95 running with now over 200k miles. Lol even though it’s old I never want to get rid of it. Same engine as well. Easy to work on. Also just to let you know that rear washer fluid res hose will leak where it exits the rear door. Mine did and had to remove the liner to fix it.
in Maryland once past 20 years old (1999), you can register it Historic ( no inspection / no emissions) check your state.
I think it is 25 here in Jersey, but not a bad idea for a clean truck like this

That's the 4.0 OHV, the longer lasting IMO. The other is the SOHC that never seem to last past 190k cuz of timing chain issues

@@tomahawk350 I'm working on a 96 right now. Massive oil leak. Valve covers have holes near the screws. Lots of salvage ones have the issue. I got a a pair I'm restoring. Runs perfect otherwise.
There was 2 4.0L engines available. The SOHC was less reliable than the OHV but made more power. I just grabbed a 4 door just like this for $1200. Guy I got it from got it to daily drive because his 79 F250 was not good on gas. He did all sorts of work to it. He said it needed injectors. I towed it 3 hours back home. Only has 3 little spots of rust. Oh the headliner thing? Well I think they all do that. I'm jealous of that clean console lid. I currently have a light for Bank 1 and Bank 2 too rich. Not sure why. Sometimes it'll randomly shut off. Only happened about 4 times. Completely restoring this thing.
a couple of years ago i picked up a 2002 Explorer Sport from a junk yard just under 250K for $750 its electrical issue was the premium Sound systems soft on and off failed ( an internal transistor fails to on) so the amps were on all night killing the battery and a leak that lets the rain in. it seems that mine was loved as well because it was built a couple of months before the timing chain tensioners got upgraded by Ford making the 4.0 SOHC more reliable. as for the leaf springs it looks like you have the single leaf i have the 3+ overload and it sags as well so I'm currently looking into new springs if yours is spring under axle the arch is the 6" spring over are 4". please film the wheel bearing job as that is something i have not done before but need to do to mine. (big secret ford only changed body work and interior between our models). and yes it has become my favorite to drive too. Good video keep them up.

My first ford was a 93 Exploder.....it has the 4.0 v6.....i liked it. Even enough to do a head job on it.....the Transfer case was Solid.....I beat on Mine.....

I drive a black '99 every day, 231,000 miles on it. Had to watch this. That's one clean interior and engine bay to boot. That power steering leak may have just been some mechanic turning the wheels with the engine off and then not bleeding out the air that gets sucked in. It'll really "boil" out of the reservoir on those things.
I have a 2001 mustang 3.8l and it was running rich on both banks all the time until it finally did not stay on. Changed the maf sensor after testing other things with tools like fuel pressure guage and vacuum guage. Ended up deciding the maf was the culprit and it's been fine ever since then.

Then went from a 1991,1998,then 1999 explorer, loved them all.Escapes aren't that bad for what I do, got a sport trak, fender bender . I was never a Ford fan until I bought awd 98 with the 4.0 for 1200 bucks it sat for a little bit but I drove it home on a dead battery lol it was running funky I put a new battery in it and drove it for 2 years only putting new spark plugs and fluids in it and then the timing went out one day I've loved these since I owned the 4.0 and now I own a 97 mercury mountaineer 5.0 4 door awd I love them they are very reliable and hard to come by nowadays throw a couple of seafoam cans in her and run it lol
My dad had a 99 explorer exactly like that one but different wheels and his 4.0 had 18 timing chains and it through a rod
Yea, they changed the 4.0 from OHV to SOHC the year after this one. Made for a slightly more powerful motor, but it had 3 timing chains which were known for going bad
D , so I was mistaken . Didn't do my homework . Your truck has an OHV engine . I get an F . Embarrassing . You know what ? I stand corrected . If it pans out , the truck is a keeper . Hope I didn't bring any thumbs down to your channel . For shame , ON ME. 😢
P.S. - the FWD SOHC engine had FOUR timing chains as there were hydraulic balancing added to reduce bottom end vibration in 4LO .

D , when you get that money light to stay off , a new starter in it , SHIP IT ! Make a profit BEFORE the chains start rattling . You know the 4.0 liter SOHC v6 is notorious for it . I don't think you got the time or space for another tear down . Been there , done that . I think the truck lasted about three years before it lost oil pressure and we installed a new oil pump well before the timing chain job . regardless of opinion whether it really needed one . The jacks shaft probably seized a bearing . We had our fun , the owner is done . Don't be that guy . Make a buck on it . That is unless you really would be into a 5.0 liter swap and all entailed . This truck is sweet , granted , but the rust bomb that hailed from upstate New York that we spent way too much time under the truck and the hood , well , he called it quits . I applauded him . He saw the light . And some of that light was right through rust holes . Fix the eye candy , be happy it still sounds good and the a/c cranks . SHIP IT ! They don't call them " exploder " for nothing .
CORRECTION : in 1996 , the 4.0 liter was an OHV engine , NOT an OHC ! Apologizes to all !!!!!

I leased a 97 with the 4.0 SOHC back in the day. Intake seals didn’t make it to 30k. Your 4.0 OVC is definitely the more reliable choice. As a side note, today I sold a 2003 WJ that’s been in my family since new. 206k and still going strong...
No kidding on that WJ. If time travel was a thing, I would use the technology to buy a WJ new from the dealer. haha
My man, please keep this thing as a daily. Get a matching colored door, fix the window, replace the tires, do rear shackles and possible leaf spring bushings and that thing will keep running until the end of time! Great find!
And of course because it’s a late 90’s Ford, you gotta throw in some new wheel bearings 😂
