  • 1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.0 SOHC with 4WD. It was a two year project that had in the high 200k miles when I purchased it and it needed differential work from day one. I completely rebuilt the front and rear differentials with all new parts and put in a solid spacer to replace the crush sleeve. I put in new front and rear drive shafts and painted them Ford blue. The transmission and transfer case were low mileage from junk yards, and the engine was completely rebuilt from a speed shop bored out .002 with light weight pistons and polished crank. I initially used Evergreen brand timing components, but redid all in Ford brand because of noise. The oil pump was a Ford old stock from Germany and the oil synchronizer was old stock from Italy. All components on the engine were replaced with AutoZone parts and all sensors were replaced with Ford components except for the fan clutch which was motorcraft, and the starter was a TrueTorque brand.
    The interior was completely redone with new front seat cushions and leather bottoms with the rest being re-dyed. The headliner was done in suede and the moon roof in matching leather (medium prairie tan). I ordered the carpet on eBay and got the thickest carpet with premium backing that was sold and matching custom mats. The tires were Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza that would not put a ripple in a drink at 90 mph - I mean they were perfect.
    The only thing I didn’t do was have it completely repainted and I wanted to do a Ford remanufactured transmission. Overall, this was a hobby that I funded by fixing and selling other Ford Explorers and I had less than $1,000 tied up in it when I sold it last year. I could be biased, but I think it was one of the nicest second generation Explorers not in a museum.

    I'm still running my Eddie Bauer 1999 with a V6 SOHC. I bought it with 50,000 miles in April 2003 and it still runs fine with 162k miles in 2021.

    Nice to see a fairly recent post on someone fixing one of these up. I have a black 99' XLT 5.0 with sunroof I bought from original owners (who kept it garaged!) after my 96' 5.0 was totalled by a lady who ran a red light. Love this body style, they run forever.

    I had a 98' eddie bauer with the forest green paint option with only 60,000 miles on it when i bought it, got it from the original owner and had all the original dealer stickers, paperwork and service records. Bad thing was the first owner never really changed anything on the car besides the oil+filter. Car still had its factory tires and ball joints and it almost killed me in a roundabout. Ended up selling it at the same price i bought it at.

      @@jmclick.6349 they are if you take care of them. Do not neglect oil changes. If you hear any rattling, have your mechanic take off the valve covers and check the timing cassettes and check out the timing tensioners. Those are the 2 main issues with those engines. If you do have damaged cassettes on the back of the engine, be prepared for a huge job and expensive labor fees. I just rebuilt the engine in my '99 myself and it was a big job because the engine has to come out to do it. I had a blown head gasket, cracked head, and my main timing tensioner was completely gone. This truck only has 114,xxx miles on it, too.

      Corey Kalkman this was $1800 when I bought it in 2016 and had 278k miles. Everything mechanical was replaced or rebuilt and the odometer was not reading the speed correctly and I had to replace it. The only thing left I wanted to do was a pair job but it was out of sight.

      @@bmddlton mine currently has 205,000 I'm selling because I bought a 2015 explorer. No mechanical issues. Just a minor exhaust leak that causes the check engine light to come on, the gear indicator is a little off (for instance, when it's in reverse it will look like it's in neutral. Other than that it's a solid engine and very reliable. It's 3000 dollars I was wondering if you think that's a fair price I'm just looking for a 2nd opinion is all.

    • @bmddlton
      @bmddlton  5 років тому

      Corey Kalkman if the AC is cold and the paint and tires look good $3k is a fair price and you might have to settle up on $2600-2800. Ultimately it’s based on where you live. In a metro city it should sell quickly.
