Yes. I was thinking about getting one for my son when he hits highschool. Safer than most SUVs, can fit some friends and thier stuff, and a good father-son hot rod project with the 5.0 engine. Jeep would be a waste of money, not as reliable, and not NEARLY as fast ;)
These were excellent vehicles & lasted a long, long time w/just good basic maintenance. The 4.0L SOHC engine was very good too lasted well over 200k mis just comes dwn to good basic maintenance.
@@plushbatfan yup was used in movie becsuse this was THE most popular SUV of 90s for good reason. Ford started the whole SUV craze! I still buy new Explorers to this day great reliable high tech vehicles .
I love these old Explorers. Lots of people say they hate the old ones and love the new ones, but I'm the exact opposite. I'm not really a car guy (prefer a truck), but I do love those 01 and older Ford cars.
Watching this video makes me miss the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer premier that my family had when I was growing up. It had the same 5 L V8 and it was just an amazing little SUV.
Matthew's Car Corner we have a 2008 Ford Escape Limited and a 2017 Hyundai Elantra. And if you want, you can chec out my crazy cold start video on an old Suburban and a 1993 Ford.
I love my V8 Explorer! I wish Ford made something like this today. The 302 and 4R70W are very reliable and thios is probably the best version of the Explorer, besides the first generation, which is still my favourite. I love the fact that you can literally bolt-on Mustang parts for more fun! You can do that with the 4.6 Explorer, too. I miss the ride and handling of the 3rd Gen Explorer, but I love the more solid/rugged nature of the older Explorer!

Almost sht myself when popped the hood... my 2001 Limited 5.0 engine bay is no where near that mint but is well taken care of. This Explorer had to have just sat in a garage, barely ever driven. What an extremely rare gem.
I have this exact car, in black with gray interior, with the SOHC 6. It currently has 232,000 miles. Owned it since 2000. I love this car. Perfect size, parrallel park into the tightest spots, versatile enough to treat it like a pickup truck hauling junk to the dump, or refined enough to take friends out to the hockey game. I plan on keeping my 97 Ford Explorer Limited for a long time to come.
Hey Kyle,This is a great review of this gen Explorer/Mountaineer but I've noticed you don't have a review of a Mountaineer of this gen. It would be awesome to see one! Love the channel and keep it up buddy!
I have an Eddie Bauer that's just this clean, and it's my pride and joy and I love it, the engine is bad currently so I'm driving a rougher 5.0 V8, intentions are to restore it and also V8 swap the Eddie.
Dammit... I'm so mad that I flipped mine 2 years ago... I honestly love the 2nd Gen more than my current 2011 Explorer... It's just something about it.
I have the 2004 Ford Explorer as my Daily, the only car we have that's giving us little trouble during this cold snap, the biggest problem is that the gas gauge doesn't ever work right but it's manageable.
My dad has one of these, same year, same engine, and it's AWD. The only difference is his is an XLT and it's white. Nice truck, we've had it forever and it still runs fine.
I miss a lot about this design of the Explorer and the first of the Mercury Mountaineer. It’s V8 (5.0 liters worth of V8) and the Ford Door/lights on/seat belt chime being 2 of those things.
That 5.0L coyote is what you want in this generation of Explorer. The 4.0 SOHC that was introduced in '98 was notorious for timing chain failure due to plastic timing guides. This design wasn't fixed until after '02.

I remember my 98 V6 Explorer, it was a piece of junk, paid 2k for it as my first car. Thinking it would be reliable with 4WD, fully loaded with extra features, garage kept and 79,000 miles, it has so many issues. I was working on it all the time in my auto shop at school. Replaced the hood latch cable, brake pads, front shock absorbers, leaf springs, rear glass door hydraulic things(they hold the trunk open, have no clue what they are called), gear shifter cables, radio, fuse box and the driver side motor window. Even though I did not buy all the parts myself, I still put too much money into it to sell it back. I luckily scored $3500 for it, and recently, with my grandparents help, bought a 73 Chevy C10 which has needed some work, and still needs more. But I'd rather put money into a truck I enjoy driving.
