I could give you a hug. I’ve been borderline obsessed to the point of anguish because my hair never looked the same twice, I always thought I’ve side was thicker, uneven etc. I really hated my hair and wasn’t grateful for what I had. My husband says it’s the quirks and unpredictably of waves and curls that are so cute.
I tried so many of these! The “no poo”, the short haircut, air drying… It is so nice to find someone who addresses wavy hair and the differences. Plus you seem like a very nice person!
My biggest mistake is not being patient with my hair. I'm just starting to keep it wavy instead of blow frying it and forget that my hair has to relearn that it's wavy/curly! If it's not curling, I add more product and then it gets heavy, I try and scrunch it, it doesn't do anything but start to frizz cause I forgot to get it wet first so I end up throwing my hands in the air like "that's it... I'm done!" Then have to remind myself, my hair is in transition and it will take time.. and go have a glass of wine!
I recognize myself in these mistakes SOOO much when I first started on this particular journey with my hair. I’ve learned A LOT from you and a couple of other influencers over the years, but I’ll be honest it’s been mostly trial and error. We know no one’s curly or wavy hair is like anyone else’s. Mine defies all attempts at classifying it!! Even my curly friendly stylist is a little baffled by it. It’s baby, baby fine, wavy, curly when I work on it, frizzy is its natural state, has opposite curl patterns in almost every curl clump, has strange cowlicks and wave patterns in the most frustrating places, gets weighed down easily, gets too soft real easily, dries out by the end of day 2 usually, gets real producty feeling easily, etc. etc. etc. to infinity and beyond. BUT, I learn so much from you that I keep coming back and back and - well, you get the picture. I have found a routine and products that are working for now at least, but man have I blown a bunch of $$$$$ on stuff that just didn’t work for me. All that being said, I appreciate you and your hard work and your cute personality!! May God bless you and keep you!!
@@Manda698 I don’t know whether to congratulate you or commiserate with you!!! 😂. I love my hair when it acts right, but hate it when it doesn’t. I keep thinking that I’ve done something wrong at that point. But I don’t always have a clue what the mistake is. I’m working on the “embracing my hair in whatever state it’s in” attitude. My hair’s not gonna do much changing. It’s always gonna be unpredictable. I might as well enjoy the ride!!! I’m currently using the Bounce Style, Bounce Back pre-poo bond builder, leave in conditioner and Wave Activator. I swear by the last 2. I don’t use the first one every wash day. What products have you found that work for “our hair type”?
@sheryladams2399 the bond builder from curlsmith! Its great and also comes in a travel/sanple size so you don't have to commit to a full bottle. Also hair clips. Basically any hair clip. Basically i came to terms YEARS ago that my hair has just as much attitude as i do and i can either work with it or put it up hahahaha
@@amandawilson890 I hear ya!! My hair matches my personality as well. I tried taming it with heat styling for years, but just like me, it always had a mind of its own. Now, I’ve accepted the fact that I don’t do normal and that includes my hair. 😂
@@sheryladams2399 have you tried brushing it out after you style? My hair doesn't always like staying defined especially come day 3 or so, but what it DOES do really really well is the 1940s pinup style Hollywood waves. Wonderful tips! I think this is my issue. Believe it or not it took me till around age 60 to realize I was a wavy/ curly girl 😅 Then I fought it for 5 more years because it wasn't consistently looking curly.. I started with a new hair stylist 3 years ago who is a wavy curly girl herself and each time she'd color and trim my hair she'd love on my curls and patiently do this routine that I paid no attention to and I'd leave with beautiful waves/curls that I could never achieve at home! Asking her how to deal with my frizz on a cruise ship😮 made me finally understand when she explained it like you just did.. when are you gonna realize you don't have frizzy hair, you have CURLY hair.. quit trying to keep it straight and your frizz will get better😂So it's been a work in progress.. you happened to be the first one I started watching in February and gave great advice, but I started also watching 3 very curly girls and the same things don't work for me and my hair has gone downhill when I started trying different products. I thought I could make my mostly wavy hair very curly. Sorry this is so long, I just got an epiphany watching this video today.. I've made all the mistakes except a short cut.
I think I’ve made all of these 😂 but I’ve learned so much from your channel! I also really misunderstood the role of water during product application. I thought water was diluting my product but it’s actually distributing it! That was a game changer for me.
Yes, I'm guilty of cutting off a lot of hair thinking that it would give me more definition. It did not so lesson learned! One time when I was looking for a new hair stylist I saw one who specialized in wavy/curly hair. Her website said not to come to her until you always wore your hair wavy. I can respect that. I leave my hair on the straighter side a lot of the time so I know that I could never commit to a wavy haircut. I also hate layers so I just get a straight across haircut.
I used the 4U gel you suggested on freshly washed, conditioned, & squeezed hair. After some scrunching, I used my new diffuser and have my hair up in a clip until I have to leave. The curls don't last overnight, but it looks great the first day. Air drying was the biggest mistake.
Hi Courtney, I don't even wear my hair curly anymore but still watch your videos as I think so much advice you give for getting healthy hair works for us all, and you always brighten the day 😊
I definitely jumped into the deep end as well. I started with the most moisturizing products I could get my hands on and it is NOT for my wavy curls. My hair looked so gross lol
I just recently started embracing my waves (I have 2a - 2b on the upper layers and 2c - 3a on the under layers). This video pretty much confirmed what I have been thinking. I have always cut my own hair, and I cut it in layers. I began to notice that as my layers grew longer, they gained more waves/curls. Your tip about hair cuts confirmed this. Thank you!
Pantene has a wavy curl cream, I switched to that for summer (it doesn’t say the heat protection temp) since I’d be crazy to blow dry when it’s 25°C 😂 I have POTS and other heat sensitivity I recommend ManesByMel, she explains air drying really well and the most important thing is: take off the plop and DONT TOUCH IT AGAIN Which, yes, works for me 😊 I use your average hair gel with “strong invisible hold” Because girl, curl cream has NO hold 😂 I also recommend strong hold foam, even if it doesn’t say “for curls”, although I do love the got2b mousse for curls
I found you just 3 months ago and have learned SO MUCH. I am 50 and my hair was going through some changes I didn't understand. For the longest time I thought my hair was super damaged. Then I watched your Curly Girl video (the hilarious one) and BOOM, I tried it for kicks and discovered I have wavy hair! I've had fun playing with various techniques and products. Seeing what my hair likes and doesn't like. I really appreciate your bonus tip and visual at the end of the video about why a haircut does not always mean the hair that is left will spring up like Shirley. My hair definitely looked curlier before I got it cut. Lessons learned. Thank you as always for your willingness to share and pass on your knowledge. Love it.
This was super helpful and I’ve done all of these! I LOVE the focus specifically on wavy hair since these are unique challenges that are not ’curly’ related. Grateful!
Wow, thank you so much for the $5! That’s not just coffee money-that’s like, ‘help keep this curl-obsessed person going’ money 😂. I’m seriously so grateful! I’m thrilled the video was helpful, and yeah, wavy hair really does come with its own set of special challenges. Your support absolutely made my day, and let’s be real, you probably just funded my next batch of hair products. 💖🙌 Thank you again!
Thank you for the hair cut tips! I’ve been thinking I need more layers but wasn’t sure about wet or dry cut. The way you describe your own hair is a LOT like mine.
I loved your visual of wavy hair and how cutting it shorter won't make it curlier. That's really interesting! I'm actually in the process of growing my wavy hair out, and I stopped using color and highlights about 6 months ago. Your videos have helped me tremendously, and I'm actually getting so many compliments on my hair now because I know how to "do it" now. Thank you for all of the great information!
A stylist thinned my layered hair out and point cut the ends, it was awful, fuzzy and sticking out all over the place. I went back a week later and got him to cut it shorter with blunt cut layers which helped but he said he was always taught to thin out curly hair. And he describes himself as a curly hair stylist.
Every stylist tried to thin my hair too. I always refused. I will take bulk over it looking like a rats nest! Sometimes we actually need the length to complete the curl pattern!
Oh my days! I went to a new hair stylist 6 weeks ago - she point cut my hair in the hopes that it would bring out the wave in my hair. I haven't had a good wash day since. :( Guess the next time I go (once it's grown enough - its between my shoulder and chin atm) I'll ask for a blunt cut with layers!
I am an exception to the air drying rule. My hair does so much better with air drying. I also refresh in the worst way possible. I spray with water to about 50% wet and add a few spritzes of spray gel. I usually have better 2nd day hair than first. However, I usually wash every 2nd day but I still have quite a bit of frizz but not nearly as much as when I don’t “style” it.
I keep hearing how diffusing your hair is better. But for me, my hair is a lot curler when i let it air dry, and i get a good gel cast. When i hover diffuse, i hardly get a cast, and it's less curly. Lol
Mistake #3 was me! I was just curious if you use heat protectant spray at anytime for diffusing the hair and if so what kind? I don't want something with a lot of extra conditioning ingredients in it because I already use a very lightweight leave in conditioner. Or could you use one in place of the leave in conditioner?
Glad I found your channel! I’m so confused! 😫 I love wearing my hair curly, especially in the summer, but I need to figure all of this out because I usually end up with crazy frizzy curls! My husband calls it my “wild girl” look! 😂😂
Great video! I’ve definitely done most of these. The using curl creams/leave ins was a big one for me. I did the CGM thing maybe 10+ years ago (and then stopped due to having very short hair) and am just now getting back into it. That was definitely the recommendation at the time. You had to have some sort of cream product underneath to avoid the crunch. I definitely did the cowash and deep condition every week. And henna (lovely stuff, but it can loosen up your curl pattern/make it “too healthy”). I currently have a chin length bob, so I’m definitely feeling the last one.
My hair is a 2a wave pattern. Some might be 2b.. lol. It’s not curly , it’s wavy. My stylist didn’t even know because she washes, brushes and dries it straight. Type 2a have straight pieces and can be dried straight very easily. I just tend to think my hair, being on the fine side, looks far fuller when worn with wave. I may have one or two ringlets in my head , but I will never acheive Shirley temple and that is ok. When I walk in my salon with waves , my stylist comments how she loves it and I told her it’s 90.% natural. We all have to find what works for us and while I prefer minimal heat, I do use a little and that is ok. A diffuser can make my waves looks wonky and again I have 2 a. I can hover and that is ok. I basically get out of the shower , throw in some leave in , then salt spray ( either r and co or earth harbor .. or wave spray by curl smith ) then scrunch with my t shirt or micro fiber towel, then I put it In the towel for about 5 minutes. I then let it air dry while I do house stuff or work. ( I do work at home ). Then I curl the roots and maybe a few pieces that are straight or wonky and it takes minutes. That’s the best I use. I may do like 5 or so pieces per side. I use a heat protectant as well. I get tons of compliments as this way makes it look like I have the fun varying patterns like Carrie Bradshaw. It’s a mix because most is wave then I add some curl and it gives it great lift and texture , and very little heat. No heat is great but my hair is also lacking the volume alone and when I add just a tiny bit, my hair actually looks thick and full. Takes very little. We all need to find our balance and what works. Having zero heat can work for some , but it’s ok to get a little help also. I live in a desert , so when I go to the beach , my waves are good enough to not use an iron as well. Sorry so long winded here. lol.
To sum up my personal wavy hair journey: find products and a routine that works for YOU! I'm a gym rat with an oily scalp so I need a stronger cleanser. I also feel tempted to go straight for leave in conditioner after washing my scalp, and I have shorter hair too.
I have been trying to enhance my curls and waves for 3 years now and just found out for my hair I need the moisturizer shampoo with c 14 16 or c 13 15. My scalp has been itching for the whole time until I started using 4you by Tia moisturizing shampoo and garnier pure clean shampoo which seems to have some oils in it also Shea moisture daily hydrating conditioner . My hair curls better and actually stays curled past the first day. My scalp doesn’t itch, I don’t have an oily scalp. I’ve tried curl smith Jessie curls, verb ghost shampoo kinky curly ogx zotos, Giovanni, mop top (love the curl enhancer gel and leave in conditioner). A lot of product lines Were not possible for me because of the heavy perfume fragrance. I can handle mild real scents like orange peppermint coconut not musk sandalwood or straight perfume. You just have to look at videos for your hair type and think about your own hair and how products are working for you. It is very much trial and error. Thanks for the videos and a place to start.
What do you think of Ouai Detox shampoo? It seems to be gentle but also removes impurities and mineral build up. Would love to hear you talk about the ingredients list.
What is a good dry shampoo for very fine hair? I know you said there’s no award for going longer between wash days, but to save time it would be nice if on day 3, I could spray dry shampoo instead of washing.
I always follow you! thanks for your advice! Unfortunately I can no longer do scrunch due to annoying tendonitis in my fingers! What could I replace scrunch with?
I’m a male been so hard-I don’t really like the male hair videos I see, so thanks! These are more informative, and helpful. Although don’t know what to do with products I don’t need lol
Should you try multiple different products to try and find a mix that works? Ive just started to take care of my wavy hair and started with the Marc Anthony Strictly Curls line, which seems to do decent on my hair. Should i keep experimenting with different products?
Watch some of Swavy Courtney's videos...and try not to do what I did, which is buy EVERYTHING. LOL. But, she has a really awesome range in her videos from dollar store products to drug store to the fancy stuff.
My hair is all messed up it is short right now 😔 I told my hairdresser not to thinning it out so I can grow my hair back 🤣 I'm going trim for 2 months hopefully I'll get my wavy and curly hair 😅 do you have a recommendation what shampoo to use while I'm growing it out
You mentioned that you can’t air-dry your hair. I have relatively short hair and air drying is super fast and doesn’t seem to negatively affect my hair. Is short hair an exception?
Can you do a video with tips/explaining how you manage to brush your hair while wet? Probably sounds like a dumb question. In every wavy/curly hair video i watch, you guys brush your wet hair without any problem. I brush mine *before* i get in the shower and its like water just automatically turns my hair into a rats nest and i cant brush it wet without breakage and hair falling out. I dont understand it. Plus, brushing it while wet completely ruins my wave pattern as well. I dont know if im doing something completely wrong or if its just the way my hair is
Right now I am taking a break from curl coaching. Summer at home with my wonderful kiddos can be a little hectic. But here is the link with more info: calendly.com/swavycurlycourtney
Only compare your hair to your hair. Comparing your hair to anyone else's will set you up for disappointment. Also, you will definitely have less consistency until you learn what your hair needs and you've been doing this for a while. And even then, it will still be different every time you wash it.
That visual aid. That's my hair. My waves start at my ears so I can't have short hair or there would be no evidence I had wavy hair at all. And, for years, my mother brushed out my hair so I could wear it in braids.. because Florida heat....so we had no idea I was wavy until four or five years ago. So, summer comes along and I can either cut it, or wear it up all the time. *whines in 2A hair* so, I am toying with what can be a workable length. Right now, it's BSL and wearing it down only at night. *shrugs*
I have learned that my hair loves rice protein but HATES linseed. I wanted to love the curlsmith edfortless waves but it has linseed which always makes my hair stringy instead of clumping.
Other beginner mistakes: buying a million products right from the get go and thinking higher cost items will make your hair curlier; using too much or too little styling product; inconsistent application of styling products (missing spots).
Mistake i made and what i learned is your hair doesn’t always have to look “perfect” and it’s okay for hair to be wild and free and still be beautiful

Courtney, you and your hair look even prettier than usual in this video. What products did you use please? Blessings from the United Kingdom. X
I really agree with you on that, Courtney's hair has got extra volume in this video 🙂
Please tell us what products are in your hair in this video. Some of the best results I've seen on you!!!
Agreed...best results I've seen on you! Maybe it's the result of a washday video you have coming up
Your hair looks awesome! That's a great cut!
My biggest mistake was buying product after product after product thinking that it was the product that wasn’t working and not the hair damage.
I learned, very quickly, about over moisturizing. Never knew it was a thing. Apparently it is. 😬
Thanks!

Have you ever used shampoo and conditioner bars for curly/ wavy hair? Anything you might recommend?
Great video, very helpful. Xx 😘
I’m a male been so hard-I don’t really like the male hair videos I see, so thanks! These are more informative, and helpful. Although don’t know what to do with products I don’t need lol
I would do a consultation, but I'm pretty sure I'd cry the whole time 😂 thank you for the video!
Just btw that brand is not CG method/ingredients (marc Anthony)
My hair is all messed up it is short right now 😔 I told my hairdresser not to thinning it out so I can grow my hair back 🤣 I'm going trim for 2 months hopefully I'll get my wavy and curly hair 😅 do you have a recommendation what shampoo to use while I'm growing it out
Hi I purchased the curly hair guide but cannot find the download. Where can I access it? Thank you!
Please shoot me an email and I will get you the download
Same.
You mentioned that you can’t air-dry your hair. I have relatively short hair and air drying is super fast and doesn’t seem to negatively affect my hair. Is short hair an exception?
From the video, I think if you can dry your hair without touching /playing with it, you'll be fine
I dont know if im doing something completely wrong or if its just the way my hair is
From what I can gather, you put product in, then brush, then squish/scrunch to get your waves back. Google bounce curl brush tutorials 🙃
Do u still do curl coaching? If so, how much
Right now I am taking a break from curl coaching.
*shrugs*
Try a pixie
I have learned that my hair loves rice protein but HATES linseed. I wanted to love the curlsmith edfortless waves but it has linseed which always makes my hair stringy instead of clumping.
Same! My hair and my allergies did not like the Curlsmith spray...I expected it to be the opposite. We buy, We learn. :)
I learned that my hair HATES coconut oil! And every other curly product has coconut oil! Ugh!!
I feel your pain. My hair hates anything coconut. It feels like straw when I use it. And it’s hard to find products without it.
My hair hates shea butter and my skin too
How do I measure 90% dry? I know, it’s a semi-stupid question, but I honestly don’t know…
Haha I totally understand! I am going off of feel. Really it is just a guess.
Other beginner mistakes: buying a million products right from the get go and thinking higher cost items will make your hair curlier; using too much or too little styling product; inconsistent application of styling products (missing spots).
The mistake i was made it's not do a clarifying.
Ur hair is the perfect collarbone length.

Wavy and Curly hair is not bad hair. This is a very problematic idea to promote. It's hair. And it's amazing.
