I SWAPPED THE CAM IN THE FATBOB & IT'S STILL CRANKY!

- After building the Fatbob a couple months ago using a CR540 cam from Cycle-Rama I decided to swap out the big 540 cam for something a little smaller to see what would happen.
Why do this you ask? I want to see how it responds, You guys want to see what happens, I wanted the content & finally, why not!?
Shout to my apprentice Mitch for getting the work done for me & letting me film him even though he was a little nervous.
Great job mate!
Future plans for this bike included an exhaust system swap to see how that responds.
I will be using the Screamin' Eagle 2-1 from the catalogue part number 64900828

I know that you fellas in the upside down land of Aussieworld drive on the wrong side of the road, but being stateside it always gives me a slight heart attack when you pull out the way you do 😂😂
I know u rite make ass pucker every time especially when he’s going
Left and another vehicle turning right
You're unstoppable mate. Keep em coming. 🤙
Cheers mate!
I recently replaced the 540 cam from my 131 for a Wood 22XE cam...same thing happened...more torque earlier. I could not be happier! The valve train is quieter and my fuel mileage is better too:)
The 540 is known to be 'noisey' cam that for sure.
Glad you're happy with your cam swap.
Makes sense. Smaller cams really are best for 90% of riders
Absolutely
Pulling a cammed bike up a ramp isn’t easy sometimes 🤷♂️
I ain’t hating on the apprentice for it
He has such an amazing opportunity to apprentice there
He's doing well & really starting to enjoy himself. He's still in his first year too.
He got a bit anxious with me filming it all & probably let the nerves get to him. All good, we had a laugh.
Congratulation Tommy on 10.000 subscribers that's awesome, keep the great work com'n
Thanks mate!
I just built a 124 with the same cam in my RG. Down low it’s no slouch and anything near 3k and hold on so much fun.
It's a great cam that's for sure!
Great content. 👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video, keeping it real.
I’m waiting on you to do a vrod cam upgrade and tune please
Would really like to see a comparison with the Andrews 485 next! Great video.
Thanks for the idea!
Nice as most know it all depends where and when you want the power when choosing a cam. Yes still cranky but not as cranky as the 540 i still love the short of the 540 idling nothing beats that thump
Absolutely
Hello from Michigan! Great video I just put a Zippers 468 in my 114 heritage and love the low end power. Keep up the great work.
Hey! Thanks for watching 👍
Awwwwsome vid!!
Got some great tips!
Would love to see you put an APE 515 cam in their too and do the same dyno graph comparison
It's on the cards!
Youre gathering a ton of real numbers across your multiple videos. Quite a library of real street numbers!!
Cheers mate
Awesome video!
Would love to see a CR515 in the same engine for a comparison!
It may just happen yet
I just put in the cr540 with a 12.1 131 and man that thing is nasty.
never had a bike that would lite up the rear tire in 3 gear.
that cr 540 shines with lots of compression.
The 470 really sounded great idling and highway. That 5 HP would only be missed if you were racing and maybe not then .👌
Good Stuff!
Go on, test all the CR/APE cams in this build. Thinking bout that 483.
The 483 is a great choice for a perfect blend of low end torque, peak HP & that choppy sound everyone wants.
Can you do an experiment for us? Dyno a stock 114 street bob for example, and then tune it without modifying anything else? I'm curious what kind of improvements you can see with stock hardware (pipes, intake, etc)
was hoping the 515 was gonna be the one you swapped to. All of its its interesting though..great video
Might do that too? We'll just have to wait & see if I have the time.
hey mate, i have a 20 fatbob with 6k on the clock, now in the shop with a failed bottom end, is oil pump failure common on a 20 model, and mine has a 468 cam, awesome of the line
480mt on Dyno, stat!
I got a cr485 in my 2021 Ultra it rips for fat cnt on fat bike lol but thinkn cr 483 may be better but yehhh dose me i rev it out so it works.
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻👌🏻
Awesome vid the fat Bob is the best Harley out there
This bike's in your demo fleet? I hope it or a built Road Glide is available for a test ride in June. I'll definitely pop in to say hi and see what it's like.
It sure is in the demo fleet. June, might be getting a little far along for it to still be here.
I'll have something else by then though
I’ll help out the channel ,I’ll pop in tomorrow morning if your about , looking at my streetglide getting a 128kit done
Sounds great! Looking forward to it
Hi Tommy, am new to the channel but slowly getting through your content ,some amazing results from the builds and some great info too so i have subscribed as im a newbie to the M8 world ,had a ducati 848 evo corse ,then moved to first Harley a 48 ,did the usual spend too much on it before deciding to take advantage of some awesome deals from a Harley main dealer here in England so have just traded the 48 in for a FXLRT 23MY with 4 miles on it in Black with traction control so same spec as 24MY ? . My 48 had V & H mufflers but the bike ran terrible and sounded awful , put a set of Cobra RPT mufflers on and it improved no end especially with the stage 1 .
just wondering is there an optimal size for the header pipes for the likes of the 131kits some systems say 2inch stepped down others 1 7/8 i have to say i prefer the 2-2 long pipes look , but to get some with performance headers ive only seen the likes of Jekyl and Hyde or Kess tech which are over double the cost of most 2-1 full systems so around £3500-£4000 . whats the difference in achievable results torque/power between a 2-2 with /without connector pipe and the 2-1 systems basically will a preferred look and sound restrict to much to be viable
do you have to get the Cycle rama cams direct from USA or do they have distributors and cant seem to find any in UK/Europe when google them we just seem to have S&S Screaming Eagle or Andrews in retailers here
thanks ,looking forward to the next one Ian.
rule no1 . . fcs don't stall it half way up the ramp!! That bike sounds really nice. That tq curve is even more impressive than the last one. Would the big tyre on a breakout help with traction??
The apprentice was a little anxious with me filming everything. I think the pressure got to him a couple times lol
@@MasterTechMiller pls let him know its all tongue in cheek. . and the reason for the smart-remark is because I did just that in 1978 and it cost me a new windscreen!!
@ihateemael Haha, yeah he's all good. He'll have to get used to me filming him working on things.
I have a 20 fatbob. Standard housing but with screaming eagle filter and will be putting on bassani pro street turn out pipes. Reading the other comments and replies, I like the sound of the 483 for mid range, and did I read some where it makes it sound a bit more choppy !!
Was planning on getting a power vision tuner and auto tuning. Would this set up work ? Presumably I can get these 483 cams shipped to the uk.
Or is there a different set up that you recommend ? Not bothered about top end.
Thanks in advance, great content 👍
Thanks for watching 👍
Yeah, so the 483 is a great choice for a good idle sound, and all round good blend of grunt & peak HP.
It can be a tricky cam to tune so make sure you have a decent, reputable tuner do the dyno tune.
Your setup with the proposed pipe will work fine with it as will the powervision tuning device.
All things considered you should be making somewhere are 120hp & 130ft/lbs of Torque.
What rev range will that be producing them numbers
my guess more low torque less Hp. I was close lol. Can you try the Cr473? lol. what is The size of that engine? Thanks for sharing
It's a 128ci
I'm thinking about trying a CR515 next
@@MasterTechMiller get all the testing done before i bring my bike up. lol
@@kanenaysmith9287 🤣😂
Im undecided on what cam to put in my 23 lowrider s
For a stock engine cr483
Or 480 if you want closer to the bottom end and less top end
483 is happy medium
Yes 👆
Weapon!
Do you think the 480mt or a cr512 for a 131 build.. looking for good blend of HP and torque
If you're leaving the comp ratio stock on the 131 go for the CR512. If you want a little more than go for the CR515 with a slight bump in comp.
The CR480MT is not what you want for HP
Do you ever work on Ultima motor,s ,,an how do u rate them
No I don't.
I've never really had much to do with them at all.
Can we go up to the 590 cam next?
I'm thinking the CR515
Tommy, I'm a twin cam guy, new to the M8 stuff. At what point in these builds do you run into CCP issues? Thinking TC stuff much over 205CCP can be cranky to tune in certain situations so you had to be careful with really early IVC. I see alot of M8 big bore stuff still using relatively low IVC cams and it doesn't seem to be an issue or at least it's not documented as such. I know a stock M8 CCP is much higher than the TC was but whats your safe threshold for these builds?
Great question mate. I could type out answer here in the comments but I'd prefer to do a video on this topic!
Thanks for the question, it's given me a great idea for a video.
.........❤💯
What breather is that
Screamin Eagle Ventilator Extreme
@@MasterTechMiller thank you so much for all your information
I have a 23 breakout, stock aside from freedom turnout exhaust. Looking a 483, anything else you would you recommend at this early stage of my build?
That's not a bad pipe to run. I've used it on stage 2 applications & big bore 128ci combos with head work with great results.
If you're after the 'Stage' modification, you'll be looking at a Camshaft install.
Depending on your riding styles it will break down to 1 of 3 choices.
A torque cam (CR480) for great low end grunt with a respectable mid range.
Then you have a balances mid range cam (CR483) that provides decent low end grunt with a strong mid range power band & 'choppy' idle sound.
For more top end inspired HP junkies you should consider the CR485. It has an incredible mid range to top end power curve.
@@MasterTechMiller thanks for the quick reply. The eventual plan will be a big bore kit, yeah I'm thinking the 483 for that 'happy medium'. Would you suggest adjustable rods as well, or not really required just for a cam replacement? And what about a tuner? Are they worth it? Or get it tuned properly?
@@MasterTechMiller I've removed baffles from them, and now (think) I have the old low back pressure crackle... that won't hurt the engine will it?
@jason5111 definitely go with adjustable pushrods!
They save having to open up the rocker boxes.
The OEM pusrods are chopped out & the adjustable ones slip straight in & get adjusted up.
It much faster to do, plus you have the added benefit of being able to change out your Camshaft later on with ease should (you decide). Not to mention they are far stronger than the OEM pushrods.
As for tuning devices. You WILL need a tuning module/device. That allows communication between the ECM & Tuning program/s.
I highly recommended having the bike dybo tuned once you get the cam kit installed.
There is NO WAY there is a reputable 'Flash tune' out there that will accommodate the needs of the state 2 CR483.
@jason5111 does it backfire & pop on deceleration? If so, it may have an exhaust leak somewhere. If not it's more likely lean when deceleration occurs. This is an easy fix with tuning adjustments. Just add fuel to the deceleration part of the VE tables or deceleration enleanment tables.
This goes to show what a lot of old school engine builders have said for decades about cams. Bigger is not always better
It’s simple you either want top end power (big cam) or you want low end torque (small cam) everything has its good and bad you can’t have it all. It’s all about the right cam for the right combo that’s how you get results
Ya can do this shit in yer sleep😀🍻
you must be using the queens metrics bc you aint getting 145 outta a simple cam swap. nuh uh. no way. youd also be snapping belts and burning up clutches every week. nope. absolutely impossible!!!
The engine is a 128ci. Did you watch the first build video?
@@MasterTechMiller nope. didnt know of your channel til 10ish minutes before i typed my stupid comment
Holy Christ your mate can’t even find neutral himself lol. Should have left that out of the video. Kinda blows the whole “knows what the hell he’s doing “ mind set.
I bet he has fitted more cams than you. He's just an apprentice mate & was most likely a little anxious about being on camera. Cut him some slack.
I actually enjoyed that bit. It shows we are all human and silly stuff happens to us all.@@MasterTechMiller
@carlbruhn1772 I thought it was good to leave in there too. It shows its authentic & as you said, we're all human.
The guy is only 9months into his apprenticeship
@@MasterTechMiller 9 months?!
Bloke is crushing it.
I reckon you'd be fun at parties...
