I shouldn't have to look for videos on transitions, they should be completely intuitive. Transitions should be the fist thing that the developers developed to be 100% intuitive. Davince is NOT the least bit intuitive in this regard.

I have been having this issue for, well long enough, and for the life of me I didn't understand why. last year I found a video that sped through the how to but he was not clear at all so I just gave up, sometime times I would get it by mistake! after fiddling with it. and here you go showing us how to do it and I had no idea the answer would be in here! I'm a bit disappointed though, as I was hoping for an explanation as to the difference between additive and non-additive dissolve. That one has always bewildered me. Thanks!
Thanks! here's what the manual says for those transitions: - Additive Dissolve: Style lets you choose what type of cross dissolve you want; choices include: Video, Film, Additive, Subtractive, Highlights, Shadows. Start Ratio lets you adjust how far along the transition is when it first begins. End Ratio lets you adjust how far the transition gets at the very end. The Reverse checkbox reverses the direction of the transition. - Non-Additive Dissolve: Start Ratio lets you adjust how far along the transition is when it first begins. End Ratio lets you adjust how far the transition gets at the very end. The Reverse checkbox reverses the direction of the transition.
Love your videos, but timeline resolution does affect the output render - to prevent a loss of quality, you have to click the "force sizing to maximum" (or something like that), in the Advanced section of the output in the render tab
Awesome video! Thank you. Have you tried using pushes with directions instead of slides? I find them a little less disorienting. However, slides can be useful to replicate a camera whip/pan and more movement.
Yes, it is really a great video. Quick and lot of informations. But i had a problem when it came to the transition curve to add a new point, the symbol at the right corner "Lozange" between brackets is not appearing unfortunetaly, at any moment on my screen. Does someone knows why?

I don't know if you can help me with my issue as it is a bit odd. When I try to use transitons on certain clips, instead of starting where I have cut the clip it starts on the frame before it that I have cut out, the frame before it appears on the timeline preview bar but it is not actually in the video itself and even if I cut out that frame it still doesn't seem to help, sorry if this makes no sense but was wondering if you know what the problem is
Sounds like it's because the transition will use a frame or few frames on either side of the cut, depending on the transition you've selected. I've noticed that happen before as well, depending on the transition.
Hi, while creating overlap #1 5:50 you extend the clip duration, but what happens if the extended part is is trimmed because it is not a good shot, so i am overlapping with a bad shot? what to do then? to overlap just the trimmed parts? sorry if the question is dumb im a newbie. Don't know if you can help me with this, Jason. I'm trying to remove an audio track from a video of my friend's band, I want to save and send the audio only to another friend. I have Resolve 19 the free version. I unlink the video and audio tracks, delete the video and then open the section to render. I click on Audio, but in the top right, it says, "No Jobs In Queue." So I can't render as it's greyed out. Should be simple, but I'm probably missing something. Any advice would be gratefully received. 👍
Capcut already does the transitions for you. You just drag and drop and it doesn't care if you "used your clip" or whatever that means. It just works. Davinci is the only editor that makes you manually do this teeth-pulling process.
it seems they changed someiting with installing non installer video transitions , the folders you should copy your files in do not exist and if you creat them like they looked in davi 17 they dont show up. has anyone a fix for this?
Hmm, confused about the troubleshooting starting at 4:19 where the Transition is rejected. Well, wait, maybe I got it. So if you drag two raw clips onto the timeline and butt them together, you will never have a Transition drop rejected? The only reason your error example occurs is because you have placed a cut mark in the clip(s). Is that it? Well, why does Resolve simply not back up from the ending cut of clip 1 50% of the transition duration, then continue the transition at the point of the cut mark in clip 2? What's the big deal, Resolve? I heard your comment about maybe it doesn't work this way in other edit programs but I don't know any other programs either so I can't relate to that. Appreciate a little more explanation to help my brain get around this.
Hi! Basically if there needs to be some overlap between the two clips. If the first clip is at the very end of the clip (when you stopped recording) and the second clip is at the very beginning (when you started recording), you won't be able to place a transition on it. You need a few frames before or after the cut you've made on the clip in order for the transition to work.
I don't like it. It is so much work for something that program should do it just like some other programs do. Just think if you have a 100 clips to do. It's good what you saying but come on. Plus I try the way at 5:00 and did not work for me. I just give up. In "Powerdirector" is so easy. Overlapping I can right away give a Crossfade. I know this one has a lot of other stuff that other programs don't but I will stay with Powerdirector for now.
I have subscribed and upped the video and I think you do an excellent blow by blow explanation, but please ease off the caffeine. The 100 mile a hour verbal’s is doing my head in, how you manage a 20 min+ video on half a dozen breaths is beyond me. You are like a tic toker on speed. 😁👍
Thank you for explaining why transitions wouldn't always fit between clips, that had me completely baffled when I ran into it! Even as a beginner I'm loving how much you can do in DaVinci, but at the same time there's so many options and so much to learn it can be overwhelming without videos like this to explain things.
You’re welcome! There’s so much that resolve can do it’s almost endless. The learning curvest deep but keep working at it and eventually you’ll figure out how everything works. I’m still learning to and I still feel like I barely know anything about this program. 😜

Hey Jason, thanks for another great video. I got a transition tip for you. You don't have to drag n drop the transition; if you place the Timeline Selector between the two clips, go over to the transition, & double click it. The Transition will automatically drop between the clips. I'm glad I watched your video because I learned a lot. Thank you & have a great day.
This is nice but you missed one topic that is how to import transition pack. If you cover with another video then it would be good. sometime we need to go to the folder for external transitions
Hi Jason how do i CLOSE a time line without closing the whole program? I have upgraded through FREE 18.6 , 18.6.1 and now I'm on 18.6.2 and there are few videos showing how to close a timeline but all are pre 18.6 and have a CLOSE option if you right click on the project in the home screen however it has never been on any of my downloads. There should be a close option under FILE in the menu its so frustrating.
You can go into timeline view options, turn on the item to open multiple timelines, add a tab for a timeline, it will be blank, then you can close the tab for your current timeline. That should work.
Hey Jason! First to say I subscribed after the first Resolve Con, but I couldn't follow your style. Now for the last two days I'm watching the sht out of your videos and I find the pacing excellent!!! So this is like a milestone for me and shows my progress.. I really love your style and how much effort you are investing in these videos. The showdown of all the things we can do with Davinci in your own videos is excellent! So if I have two clips that you just don't have any spare frames. What do you do? I solved it by making a short clip using my camera. I left the lens cap on and turned down my audio all the way. Shot about a second (or any time you want). I now just insert that clip between my clips that have no spare frames. I just becomes a short black "transition".

Yes, you can add keyframes to the audio. You can add them using the inspector volume or you can ctrl (might be alt) click on the gain line on the clip where you want to add a keyframe.
I am using iPhone pictures and mov videos, mov’s fill the screen but iPhone pictures are centered…I use the blanking fill but unhappy with the looks. Is there a way to fill the screen with iPhone pictures?
Sure, you can either zoom in on the photo using the inspector or if you go into the project settings, then Image Scaling on the left, you can change the input scaling where it says Mismatched Resolution Files to another option like full frame with crop. You can also change the same thing in Output scaling if you need to.

TBH Davinci is very frustration with the whole transition dropping on the timeline not sure what's going on but I have clips that I didn't trim and it still wont let me drop the transition I end up having to move one clip or the other but then I run into the issue where it's only on one side or the other.
Do you know why I'm able to place transitions but not view them? I'm not sure if its just a me problem, also overlaping the clips by clicking and dragging won't show the exactly white box while your triming it, hope this gets resolved if its a glitch.
Maybe they are disabled? If you are in the edit tab, along the top of the viewer, there's a colored circle, this will toggle on/off thinks like the color grade and FX. Maybe that's turned off....🤔
I’m on an M1 Mac Mini with 16gigs of ram. If you have the free version, it will not run a smooth as the studio version because it doesn’t use your graphics card.

How to add the same transition across multiple clips (say 60 of them). Need to do this on the cut page. Cut page will add the transition to the video and the audio track. Or is there a way apply transitions to audio track as well on the edit page?
Ctrl (cmd on Mac) + T = transition on both Alt (option) + T = transition on video only Shift + T = transition on audio only. Select as many clips as you want, and use the appropriate keyboard shortcut above to apply a transition to all those clips. The transition that is applied is the one you have set as the default transition.
Hi Jason As a beginner I find Da Vinci very problematic. Your video shows its easy to to add a transition. But when I try it and then play back nothing happens just two clips with no transition
Sounds like it might just be a playback issue if you can see the transition on there. If you don't see the transition, just shorten the clips a bit and try adding the transition again.
Everytime I add a transition on the timeline, and the marker gets to it, my video lags and resumes couple seconds after the transiton was suppposed to play. Any tips on how to solve this?

There’s a lot of things and resolve that are not intuitive off the bat. Part of the reason why the learning curve for Resolve is steep.

Try shortening the clips by a few frames. There may not be enough overlap for the transition to drop on.

What do i do if i get a red flash when trying to add a transition?
Maybe delete the transition and add it again? Or try reinserting the clips again or making a new cut on the clips.
When your video started, you added "icons" "text" and graphics , is that a feature you can recreate in Davinci ?
Yes, it’s easy to create all those things in resolve. They’re all assets that I got from Motion Array. 😁👍

My transitions won't drag and drop onto my clips, what am I doing wrong? I can get them to drop onto Titles, but not my video clips.
Try shortening the clips by a few frames. You need some overlap of the clips to be able to add the transitions.

Hey Jason, thanks for another great video. I got a transition tip for you. You don't have to drag n drop the transition; if you place the Timeline Selector between the two clips, go over to the transition, & double click it. The Transition will automatically drop between the clips.

This is nice but you missed one topic that is how to import transition pack. If you cover with another video then it would be good. sometime we need to go to the folder for external transitions

Little by little take it one step at a time. There's a steep learning curve with Resolve, but you will get it!
Hi Jason how do i CLOSE a time line without closing the whole program? I have upgraded through FREE 18.6 , 18.6.1 and now I'm on 18.6.2 and there are few videos showing how to close a timeline but all are pre 18.6 and have a CLOSE option if you right click on the project in the home screen however it has never been on any of my downloads. There should be a close option under FILE in the menu its so frustrating.
You can go into timeline view options, turn on the item to open multiple timelines, add a tab for a timeline, it will be blank, then you can close the tab for your current timeline. That should work.
The tip for saving transition presets was legendary for me, it was more complicated before, this was gold!

Hey Jason! First to say I subscribed after the first Resolve Con, but I couldn't follow your style. Now for the last two days I'm watching the sht out of your videos and I find the pacing excellent!!! So this is like a milestone for me and shows my progress.. I really love your style and how much effort you are investing in these videos. The showdown of all the things we can do with Davinci in your own videos is excellent! That's pretty important and I appreciate the extra mile you go and invest time to really implement these though they might not be necessary, one would argue, in a tutorial like this. Really happy to have you here and can't wait to progress enough to dig into Fairlight.

So if I have two clips that you just don't have any spare frames. What do you do? I solved it by making a short clip using my camera. I left the lens cap on and turned down my audio all the way. Shot about a second (or any time you want). I now just insert that clip between my clips that have no spare frames. I just becomes a short black "transition".

Mmm I have studio version and I’m on m1 MacBook Pro 16GB ram. Am I doing something wrong or is it cause I shoot 4K
I edit in a 1080 timeline to make it easier on your computer. Then before you export, change the timeline back to 4K. That might help.

wow I just switch to this program and was having all the problems that you talked about with transitions. You saved me a huge headache, Thanks a lot great video!!! I was just wondering if there is a way to adjust the audio level on a video by adding points like you do in power director 365 and just raise or lower sections of the audio and not all the audio at the same time from a video clip? Yes, you can add keyframes to the audio. You can add them using the inspector volume or you can ctrl (might be alt) click on the gain line on the clip where you want to add a keyframe.
I am using iPhone pictures and mov videos, mov’s fill the screen but iPhone pictures are centered…I use the blanking fill but unhappy with the looks. Is there a way to fill the screen with iPhone pictures?
Sure, you can either zoom in on the photo using the inspector or if you go into the project settings, then Image Scaling on the left, you can change the input scaling where it says Mismatched Resolution Files to another option like full frame with crop. You can also change the same thing in Output scaling if you need to.

TBH Davinci is very frustration with the whole transition dropping on the timeline not sure what's going on but I have clips that I didn't trim and it still wont let me drop the transition I end up having to move one clip or the other but then I run into the issue where it's only on one side or the other.
Sometimes it gets wonky, I don't know why if there are enough handles on both clips.
At first it was quite difficult to follow....but when I could (follow) it's great. Thank you!!!

Do you know why I'm able to place transitions but not view them? I'm not sure if its just a me problem, also overlaping the clips by clicking and dragging won't show the exactly white box while your triming it, hope this gets resolved if its a glitch.
Maybe they are disabled? If you are in the edit tab, along the top of the viewer, there's a colored circle, this will toggle on/off thinks like the color grade and FX. Maybe that's turned off....🤔

What spec computer are you using? I can’t get my transitions to playback that smooth at all 😂
I’m on an M1 Mac Mini with 16gigs of ram. If you have the free version, it will not run a smooth as the studio version because it doesn’t use your graphics card.
you are THE BEES KNEES, I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't let me, long story short the sound was muted and it wouldn't let me add overlaps. I don't know if that is a thing but you helped a lot. thx

low all the instructions on youtube on how to fix the transition problem but davinci 18 won't let me add transitions at all.

How to add the same transition across multiple clips (say 60 of them). Need to do this on the cut page. Cut page will add the transition to the video and the audio track. Or is there a way apply transitions to audio track as well on the edit page?
Ctrl (cmd on Mac) + T = transition on both
Alt (option) + T = transition on video only
Shift + T = transition on audio only.
Select as many clips as you want, and use the appropriate keyboard shortcut above to apply a transition to all those clips. The transition that is applied is the one you have set as the default transition.

As a beginner I find Da Vinci very problematic.
Your video shows its easy to to add a transition.
But when I try it and then play back nothing happens just two clips with no transition
Sounds like it might just be a playback issue if you can see the transition on there. If you don't see the transition, just shorten the clips a bit and try adding the transition again.
I am unable to drag and drop? I mean I can drag it over into the timeline but it won’t apply. I’m on a new Mac. Any tips?
You probably need to shorten your clips by a few frames.
imagine if you wanted to do these transitions in premier pro, It literally takes f*king hours to do.

Everytime I add a transition on the timeline, and the marker gets to it, my video lags and resumes couple seconds after the transiton was suppposed to play. Any tips on how to solve this?
