  • We have had this Ford Raptor for 6 months now and my wife loves it! I however have a few things to point out about this truck.. it's NOT perfect! Follow on Instagram for all updates on the channel before it's actually on UA-cam: / autovlog
The Ford Raptor has a 3.5L twin turbo charged Ecoboost 6 Cylinder with a LOT of power! It does however lack in sound and good fuel economy.. In todays video we will cover the good and the bad with this Ford Raptor. The recalls and the quality defects.

Man.. The 10 gears is what makes your truck drive so smooth, and always keeps it in the power band during acceleration.

Shouldn't it give the truck more towing capability?

Gears 8-9 & 10 are overdrive gears. Only gears 1-7 are less than 1:1.
This helps keep the turbos in the sweet spot for torque & boost.

Alon Elhadad few things like torque management, weight of vehicle, durability of internals of the drivetrain. The 10 speed that was co produced by GM and Ford is better than what it was using previously.

Going from 8 to 3 as you were talking about is actually pretty awesome feature of this transmission as it can skip gears directly to 3rd instantly from 8th. It doesn’t have to go down through all the gears to get there. I am getting over 16 with my raptor and I always use sport and punch it at every intersection it’s interesting you are getting so bad mpg. As far as towing well you can’t have off road plush suspension and expect high towing capacity. The 2nd gen raptor has very soft leaf springs

Love my 2017 Raptor! I’ve put 17k on it with no issues outside of a couple recalls that took about 15 minutes to resolve. Fit and finish still like new and absolutely the most comfortable truck I’ve ever owned. When towing I use the tow mode and that automatically locks out the top three gears. When I’m in a lot of traffic and there’s a lot of stop and go happening, I’ll normally just manually lock out the top 4 gears. That will alleviate all the searching for gears but not sure what it does to the fuel economy.

I think the softer suspension limits the towing/payload rating. Same thing with the Ranger Raptor here in Asia.

I just picked up mine last month with the 801A package and it's factory roll off date is July 2018. Haven't been in the dirt yet but in the old days after four wheeling we washed the underside and we'd spray the leaves with diesel or kerosene to prevent the squeeking. Since there are so many synthetic things to use today if I run into this issue I'll try one.
Yes the mileage sucks but I didn't buy it for economy.
It's not a work truck so I didn't plan on towing a trailer full of tools. If towing was my main concern, I'd buy a Super Duty f-250.
As far as the shifting is concerned, the owners manual tells you specifically that the gears may not follow the consecutive patterns equally and that it may shift from 1st to 4th (example) depending on your acceleration.
I've had zero issues and my only gripe is with Ford for raking all their 4X4's 2inches lower in the front which will require a leveling device (which are out now but overpriced just like they were when they were first made available for my 2015 F-150).
Many of the F-150 2015 add on parts fit the Raptor which saves additional cash, is: floor mats/liners, seat covers, etc.
All that being said and being a 6 time Ford owner, the Raptor is the best designed, most thought out, and most well built factory truck that rolls out of the assembly line in the world today.

People are saying they need to put a V8 back in the Raptor and I completely agree but if you want that then just go to Paxpower in houston and they will convert most trim levels of an F150 with the 5.0L V8 into a fully fledged Raptor and supercharge it too
And you get everything you would get on the raptor besides maybe the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel

And has a transmission that has too many gears -- considering they dont help increase cruising MPG over a 6-speed V6.

I have a similar 2018 Raptor, but have the 12 inch shorter wheelbase SuperCab version. The shorter wheelbase makes a big difference in turning ability, it becomes a nimble vehicle. However, the 12 inch reduction in length makes the back seat quite tight for adults. My opinion is that a true Raptor race truck has the short wheelbase, the longer CrewCab is the compromise “stretch” version for carrying passengers.
The tiny V6 is quite powerful. No complaints regarding lack of power. It even feels powerful before the boost gage reports any pressure boost.
My mileage is consistent 19.5 MPG driving around suburbs on gasoline with 10% ethanol.
I really love the Raptor, I can’t imagine life without it!

It's squeaking because you've got dirt in the suspension bushings. It's a sign that you've off roaded it and in my opinion it's a sort of badge of honor. Either that or they are warn but with the miles you have and the driving you do with it that shouldn't be the case.

You can’t defy the laws of physics. In an internal combustion engine more torque and more horsepower usually means more fuel consumption. It doesn’t matter if it’s a V6, V8 or V10, turbos or naturally aspirated. And those power numbers are insane for any engine and really quite the achievement from those folks in Dearborn. The theory of EcoBoost is that you can achieve Eco and Boost just not both at the same time. Also the Raptor BFGKO2s don’t help either and would most certainly negatively affect fuel mileage on any truck. It will be interesting to see how the fuel mileage will sort out on the new 2019 Limited trim with this same engine but with better aero and without the KO2s.

    • @jaredchampagne2752

I think the “horrible” gas mileage is from the way the truck is, it’s lifted, has 35s and also has a high horsepower engine so I think 19 is great for a truck that’s built for 60mph in the desert, I’d be lucky to get 20mpgs out of my 2010 F150 with the 4.6 and that thing only has 300hp. So consider yourself lucky as I’m sure other raptor owners may have way worse mpgs, and this isn’t hating on you I’m just saying why it may not be great gas mileage. And by lifted I mean higher than factory, and also great vids keep up the work, let’s see your F150 btw!

You mentioned your wife feels "Safe" in the Raptor. I want to comment on that. While the heavy curb weight of the Raptor makes it safer for it's occupants in an accident (and deadlier for people in smaller vehicles, great job there), it's top heavy center of gravity makes it more likely to tip over. Also the F-150 has a good crash test rating, but other full size pickups don't. Just because the Raptor is big and tall, doesn't mean it's necessarily safer.

The Ford Raptor actually sits pretty wide with an aggressive stance and it takes curves pretty well. To flip one is going to take a great deal of effort. The Raptor finished second in a Baja competition with only factory stock equipment.

The 10 speed trans. The reason you have that in the Turbo charged version is that it keeps you in the powerband. Turbos are notorious for lag and the close ratio off sets that lag. As far a gas mileage, I have a 2017 with a 3.5 and on the hwy it hit 22.5 mpg. That's on CC at 78 mph with AC. Smaller engines with turbos are only economical if you're not in boost. Once in boost mileage goes down the drain. Driving the truck in sport mode is a gas guzzling mistake if you're looking for mileage

My 2017 F150 XLT 5.0 V8 / 6 speed SelectShift. . . Average fuel economy on 'trip meter A' , not reset in more than 3000 miles = 20.2 MPG overall - city, highway, traffic jams, hills, putting the pedal to the metal now and then (the 5.0 sound!!)
Average fuel economy on 'trip meter B' , not reset since the truck was purchased new = 19.7 MPG overall... including all of the above driving conditions, plus running studded tires five months last winter to minus 35 temperatures.
I'll stick with the 5.0 and 6 speed for simplicity and economy... and the SOUND.

buys raptor, complains that bushings squeak.... also you just "feel" like it has too many gears? do you notice it hunting for gears where it effects the trucks driving? does it sometimes shake or is this all just based on the idea of so many gears. I say this because people have no idea what it takes to develop vehicles in 2018. its not the good ol days you might not like the fact that it has so many gears but if it helps return 4% efficiency then its a no brainier. every system is getting optimized for small gains just to be able to sell vehicles like the raptor. so we can keep complaining about the smallest things like if ford had it there way they could just put a two speed powerglide in it like its a race truck. Manufactures understand what customers want they just dont live in youtube fantasy land where trade offs have to be made. So to help you review something usful to people who might want something like a raptor ask yourself, Does this effect performance, is it really annoying (esp to the average buyer of THAT vehicle) or in theory do you just not like something based on your pre conceived notions of how something should be done. there is room for opinions for sure but this update was really off the mark to truck owners. these are complaints i expect from people driving german cars.

Spray leaf springs with Fluid Film ... (lowe's) no more anoying noise. I use Fluid Film usually to spray my cars whole frame before winter time ... keeps rust away ... frame, differentials and all underside looks brand new (someting similar to Krown Pruduct). Works great on leaf springs. Product does not dry it gives you oil like coating and all salt, water and elements seem not to go thru the coating.

Your mileage is probably a bit worse. Calculate your mileage via the pump method. Full tank, drive miles and refill. Divide the miles by the gallons. At that point, you might have a number different from what is shown on the display. Take your hand calculated MPG and divide it by the display MPG....then multiply by 1000. Example: 15.3 and divide by what is shown 15.9 to get .9622xxxx and x1000 = 962. Now we program your onboard MPG meter to be more accurate. Start with the engine off, close the door, wait 30+ seconds until all dash lights, interior lights, and exterior lights are off.Press and hold OK Button on the left side of the steering wheel and don't release it yet.Push start Button only (no brake pedal) to turn on Accessory Mode.Once the message “Full Accessory Power Active” appears, release the OK button, then quickly press the brake pedal and turn the engine on.Engineering Test Mode appears instantly.Use the down arrow to scroll to AFE Bias (32 presses of the down arrow) and push OK to change it to the number you calculated, then push OK again to save your value. Once done, turn off truck and it will update your mpg, including your Trip 1 and Trip 2. You'll see it has changed the next time you start the truck. The above method is for the Raptor. The F150 has a method but it is a little different.

Jason Rios Thank you! I own a Toyota FJ Cruiser and I have driven the Tacoma TRD Pro before I drove and bought the Raptor. Honestly, there is no comparison! The Raptor hands down is the best truck on the market when it comes to performance! I cannot even find bad reviews on the Raptor! Even Ford cannot compete with all their other pickups against the Raptor! The V6 Raptor with twin turbo is amazing and very powerful! You need to drive one to understand.
My Raptor is black as well and only $56k brand new from Mullinax Ford - check them out. I bought mine while deployed overseas online and had them ship it from Alabama to Florida!

@@jasonrios664 Well, I picked up my brand new 2019 Raptor on 24 August at Mullinax in Kissimmee and what an amazing truck! I took it to a dive site for 3 days of diving and had plenty of room for the dive gear and all our luggage. I will be taking the truck from Kissimmee to Orlando to Miami Beach then back to Virginia on my vacation/road trip. So far it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned and puts my 2008 FJ Cruiser to shame! I traded in my 2017 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack and a 2012 Toyota Highlander for the Raptor and I don't miss either of them! What I really like about mine are NO LEATHER SEATS, NO MOON ROOF!!! As a military guy I hate bling bling and impractical options in my 4x4 trucks! My Raptor is the no frills edition (:

The deal on the 10 speed - a way to comply with government fuel efficiency targets (if you drive the vehicle really softly). 3 overdrive speeds.
a 7 speed would probably be more practical - but, at least, with the fact that few end up in transmission shops, it seems Ford got this one right.
