Ive said it before and ill keep saying it. To me Maiden Rock in Rio 2001 is their best show recorded. Bruce and Adrian back in the band. one off the best comeback albums with Brave new world. a setlist to die for. with alot off the classic tunes. the best epic songs from the Blaze Bailey area. With the best songs from Brave new world. im gonna try you do this whole show in order. Next up is the Brave new world song. Ohh for the reocrd. Nicko Mcbrain plays all the kick drums with his right foot. he trained that right foot for for weeks on end during the Piece of mind recordings for the Where eagles dare song in early 1983
Yeah, Maiden have recorded a LOT of great live footage over the years, but Rock In Rio may be the best. I just wish the audio and video quality was better. En Vivo and Flight 666 are both fantastic live documents from the post-reunion era too.
@@keefriff99 yeah likewise. Although i have heared they had alot off issues on stage. as Steve could not move as much as he watned as something was wrong with his bass rigg. ( can be heared during fear off the dark ) Also the cameracrew and editor company made alot off mistakes after the filming. they lost most off the footage from both the cameras on Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. they made weird editing choises. thats Why Steve took the whole project home. and learned himself how to edit it all.
Saw Maiden on May 3rd 1983, at Preston Guild Hall (UK), when I was 16. Saw them again, this year, at Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham, this year and was as blown by them now, as I was 40 years ago!
@@alexnadeau22 Holy shit, you’re right…I never knew they played it in 2010 and I consider myself a pretty obsessive Maiden fan, lol. I’ll have to look for live clips…thanks for the info!
Fastest right foot in rock. He tried twin bass drums on one track (Face in the Sand) and they had to tweak it as his left foot lacked power). Brave New World is one hell of an album
I swear this song has one of the best choruses they've ever made. Take my heart and set me free Carried forward by the waves Nowhere left to run, navigator's son! Chasing rainbows all my days Where I go, I do not know I only know the place I've been Dreams, they come and go, ever shall be so Nothing's real until you feel!
Concerning pure drumming and pocket and feel, microtiming ... The Parchment on their last record really got me. Listening to this track while jogging/running... it gives you a second breath. Its so ongoing, grooving, pushing you forward. To me one of the best drumperformances I ever heard on a rock/metal album.
To me, rock in rio is the best IM live show ever. In the same time my top 2 IM albums are Brave New World and Dance od Death. Would love to see your reaction to Blood Brothers, Dance od Death and No more lies. Cheers!
I was at this concert... Hard to believe it was 22 years ago already. "I was then a young man full of hopes and dreams"... Awesome concert, plus there are the memories that i got lost in Rio with only $3 in my pocket, without even a cell phone, 1600km from home
For me, Ghost of the Navigator is a classic on the same level as The Trooper, Aces High, Run to the Hills, Can I Play With Madness and The Evil That Men Do.
They are all very good, but ghost of the navigator more epic, more emotional, more dramatic, more beautiful, more melodic, more energetic, more dynamic! Most maiden songs are like that, but i talk about comparison! It’s relative
There are many great bands, very few of them are like maiden in the sense that every single member is a monster on their own. If you isolate every member they all have an incredible flare and authentic singularity, but the chemistry between them all is the magic that can't be copied. Beyond technical prowess these guys are sheer art and expression. The power of that has led them to be the biggest metal act on the planet with out any mainstream media support, or even radio play, going musically against the grain of everything mainstream. As a singer and songwriter they by far have had the greatest influence on me of all the great bands of my time.
Just came here to say… your channel is hands down my favorite UA-cam channel. I absolutely love it. As a drummer myself.. this is a perfect balance of humor.. entertainment.. and actual breakdowns of what’s going on without being too disruptive of the content you’re covering. I love it. Keep the great videos coming!
This and the title song Brave New World, in my books Classics. This song with it´s tempo changes is literally all over the place, the right way, a very dangerous sounding song. Perfect. Iron Maiden was at peak after the re-union with Bruce and Adrian, that time, around 2000, untouchable.
I've never heard this Maiden track before (I kinda checked out after the Seventh Son album), and while I'm not sure it stacks up compared to their older stuff, there's no denying they nailed the live performance.
6:28 Goosebumps all the way..... what an absolute awesome moment.... they're totally in a storm and the waves are crashing more and more relentless......these guys are pure genius the greatest of all time as far as sound goes live
i found a video iron maiden kids ghost of the navigator. 5 yr old brazilian kids dress up like the band and mime to ghost of the navigsator, complete with bruce scasly pants and fake adrian beard. they really have it down. amazing to see such little kids responding to maiden. sort of a mini school of rock
Just watched a fair chunk of your reactions and I have to say you get it dude, the thing that maiden have you have a good way of describing it. Really glad you are enjoying maiden. Here’s a strange one of the somewhere in time album there is a b side called “reach out” which has Adrian smith (guitarist) singing and Bruce backing vocals and nicko on the drums. Both for a display of skill and versatility within the band I doubt anyone has done a reaction to it and also it’s a rarity even for the diehard maiden fans
It's incredible how you didn't understand yet that Nicko uses just ONE SINGLE KICK 😅Also, it seems like you do it on purpose to react to all the songs on Rock In Rio 2001, except "Sign of the cross". 😅😅😅 That one is the best about drums of the entire live!
Just to mentioned Bob Gatzen passed away. Drummer but mostly known for creating and crafting drums and percussion. He has some video's on youtube but prefered craft and creating above touring around the world. Still he' was a great drummer.
ANDREW- For the MOST incredible of Bill Ward's magic try doing a reaction video to him in Black Sabbath- the song is DIE YOUNG, a phenomenal VIDEO as well!!!!!🥰 His drumming there comes thru several times!!!
Iced Earth with Brent Smedley (but others are very good too) one of the greats, try anything from Alive in Athens if you don't know them Metallica + Maiden evolution/progression
I'm old school AF. Never heard this song. Early Maiden Kicks serious ass. Bruce is worth $130 million...no dummy and played his card right. He is/was also a pilot. The guy is amazing.
Btw, Marco Minneman and the Aristocrats are actually Steven Wilson's "band" on some records. I went to this video to hear the guitar solo, which is fab, but then get struck by Marco's drumming. Unfortunately the only snip of youtube video I could find where we can actually see Marco, is when the song ends and the guitar solo iis performed. There is a great keys solo before too, also with great Marco playing. ua-cam.com/video/IaH2C2Qe97Y/v-deo.html
Nico plays a sloppy fast double on a single pedal to give the illusion of a double bass gallop. The Snare he mainly uses is a 1975 Ludwig. He plays Pastie Cymbals and uses drums from The British Drum Company
Although on the Brave New World tour he was playing a Premier kit with the fantastic signia snare drum, which has a wicked cutting crack to it . He played lots of different shares from yes his Ludwig, to his beast of a bronze snare when he used to use Sonor in his earlier days. But yes he now uses BDC gear. He went Sonor, Premier, back to Sonor then BDC 😉
It can be argued that as strong as their album body of work is, there VHS/DVD/Streaming concert body of work is even better. Starting with Beast Over Hammersmith in 1982 and going through the Book of Souls Live Chapter in 2017, it's incredibly good. Hard to rank them in order. And this doesn't even include what's still to come from the recent touring, which might be their best shows ever.
He's definitely not as clean as Dave or Adrian, and is my least favourite of the three as a soloist. There are some solos on older songs that Janick's taken over from Adrian and I wish he hadn't. But he's also got FANTASTIC stage presence and is a writer on some of new-Maiden's best songs, so overall I think he was a good addition to the band. He's still a great guitarist, just not quite as good as the other two in my opinion.
You mention before about click tracks. I am anti click. And Iron maiden is why. If you listen close to any live song. You say how good and in the pocket they are. But you can still hear hick-ups in their playing and to me that's makes it all the more better and genuine. If you play to a click I think it sounds robotic. Especially in Christian music with allowing the holy spirit to move. Or like this when it's an over all experience..
If you search 'An evening with Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain [FULL SHOW]' on youtube - there is an hour of Nicko - drum solo, a couple of Maiden tracks, and then him talking about his influences, why he doesn't play double-kick, and the one time he did record double kick with Maiden (Face in the Sand)... very entertaining stuff.
Ive said it before and ill keep saying it. To me Maiden Rock in Rio 2001 is their best show recorded. the whole "Brave new World" album is a masterpiece
Absolutely. Saw them at Red Rocks in CO on this tour
My first Iron Maiden album, did find them on later age, now fan of their whole produktion ❤
Ghost of the Navigator is a GREAT song off BNW.
That chorus and harmony section are criminally underrated…I wish they had played it again after 2001.
They played it for a bit in 2010, right before The Final Frontier came out (Wicker Man + Ghost as opening songs)

You need to react to WHERE EAGLES DARE. Nickos debut song and comes out with killer drums to make a statement that he was there to stay!
Such a great performance.
How are we this deep into metal without Holy Wars?!?!? Keep it up! Loving the reactions!
Great album and Adrian Smith's return
Nicko has only used a double kick on face in the sand
Winery Dogs with Mike Portnoy, the song Time Machine has a cool tempo change. And there’s even an “official video” for you to watch!
In this Very Live he used the double pedal . The introduction for Face in the Sand...
Nicko = single kick drum

Nicko plays with the butt of the stick to give the snare more punch 👊
Cool that you ended it with Italian ciao, because in Portuguese we have tchau, which is exactly like the Italian ciao. And well, it was Rock in Rio.

5:45 - How come some people say that Janick gers sucks as a guitarist? I love his style. He's a true heavy metal god.

yes, Nico is adamantly single-kick ... he's on record saying that double-kick is "cheating" and refuses.
cuz he's just a badass like that.
ugh I can't stand crowd clapping either....it's inevitably always off beat
The crowd clapping and chanting is great. But yeah it needs to be handled carefully.
And not encouraged too much IN songs
For me the last album where Nicko played drums was Fear of the dark... after that he has been very boring drummer.
