Nicko has gone through a lot this year.... a stroke, partial paralysis, extensive therapy to recover, and then hitting the road again while still recovering. Long may he continue! It's impossible to imagine Iron Maiden ever going on without him.
HEAR! HEAR! when the time comes that Nicko can't go on the road I hope and prey that maiden then call it a day as far as touring goes , I'd hate to see any one of the six replaced on stage , it wouldn't feel right .
They are the reason I started playing bass at 14, on top of already having been a drummer/percussionist in the school band since 6th grade...Love Maiden Soo Much! UP THE IRONS!
This is from Chile; the footage from Dortmund is also a great, very different stage show as it was filmed on their tour in support of the album "Dance Of Death." You may be aware yet, Andrew, but Iron Maiden is coming to Auckland in 2024!
Maiden is great live, of course. But you should listen to the studio version of Where Eagles Dare (probably transcribed on Drumeo) It was the fan’s introduction to Nicko when he replaced Clive Burr. As the first track on Piece of Mind, it loudly said, “Hello, I’m Nicko, the new drummer. You’re gonna love me!”
Nicko has a lot of videos playing alone in drummer events, he cover full songs and the camera stays all the time on him, it would be amaizing to see you covering that.
Hey hey from New England...When I saw them in 2019 in Hartford Connecticut they played this tune...Nico is such a fluid player it seems like he isn't doing a lot but in reality it's all about finesse and his kick work is legendary ✌️🤘🧐
😂😂11m20ish sec "Irish-jig sounding" ... my brain went to the "Darby O'Gill & the Little People" cave scene! Thanks for that, just found you today reacting to Mike Potney doing Pneuma... always Love drummer's, I miss playing! Thanks for doing what you do, only 3 videos in and Loving your input😁
Spot on about no click track. Most of the guys don't even wear in-ears, just regular earplugs. And yeah, they sometimes play too fast, but that is just because they get so pumped from the crowds. And as you said, it is a good thing. It's organic. It adds to the excitement of the show.
11:24 they do incorporate some Celtic Folk elements in their more modern tracks. I think Janick may have brought that influence to their music, I don’t recall much, if any, Celtic influence before Janick joined, and he wrote Dance Of Death too. And then of course there’s The Clansman (which you’ve already reacted to) and Death Of The Celts, which are both very much Celtic all the way through, not just musically but lyrically too.
Totally on the nose. Janick loves that stuff. Just look at the way he does his own jig while playing it. And the crowd eats it up! Some of the purists turn their nose up at Janick's playing. But the dude can shred, and he is really entertaining. I always set up on his side of the stage when I am up close for a show. It's just more fun over there. Plus he comes up to the front of the stage and interacts a lot with the people there.
Hi Andrew. I am really glad you have found iron maiden. Such a iconic band. Please could you check out PowerSlave live from the live after death concerts. Back in 1985. I believe this is Iron Maiden at the peak live. Especially Nico. Just phenomenal.
Hi, Andrew! That was super cool! That crowd! WOW. I guess if you're a Maiden fan you are for life. Your Jack Black reference was excellent and totally applicable, very reminiscent. School Of Rock is still one of my favorites.
This song's DNA is based very firmly in the poem of Rabbie Burns - Tam O'Shanter... a tale of a drunk that catch's sight of a witches Covent and is then chased by said witches. He escapes by jumping over a fallen down bridge... at which moment the witches almost have Tam and manage to pull off the horses tail. This song is 100% a modern, Maiden equivalent. This is also why the "Irish" jig style music is in there, the Traditional Scottish folk music that would accompany such a tale as Tam O'Shanter. One of Maiden's all time greats.
Saw Maiden when I was about 15...I'm now 56 and saw them again, in July. My head was blown! They're as good now, as they were in the '80s. I know that Nicko's drumming isn't as technical, as it was before his stroke...but he's still a super solid backbone for the band.
There are indeed synths parts - not triggered but (until very recently when he retired after 40 odd years with the band) played live by Steve's bass tech, Michael Kenny
Great reaction video Andrew, I live in the UK and have been lucky enough to see Maiden many times since their early days, you must see them if you get a chance the production is amazing and as a band they are so tight. I also totally get the Niko comment, if you play so well then the music just seems to flow over you? Keep it up and thank you. 🤩
Iron Maiden has literally made me dive into different aspects of history through the story telling of some of their songs. Passchendaele being the main one, WWI Battle that NZ was actually a pivotal part of \m/
Great reaction and spot on Andrew they are all stars in their own right. I was singing this to myself earlier on today. The easiest way to sort the guitarists - Janick does the prancing and leg up on the amp/speaker, Dave the chunkier one and was the one that got patted on the head and does the interaction with Janick on most of the songs and Adrian is the one that stays around his part of the stage centre right looking outwards
Maiden is 1.9.24-13.9.24 in Australia and 16.09.24 in Auckland. Get a ticket and show them live. It‘s worth. In my eyes Maidens best Tour (I was on 12 different tours live). Nicko is good recoverd from his stroke in January. Saw him in Juli in Munic.
Nicko in another live video of this does the jig in the beginning. At his restaurant he has a full kit and will play maiden videos were the drum track removed, he plays perfect. They also rehearse 2 months every year b4 touring.
They're going to New Zealand next year, I heard! By the way, the "like Vincent Price horror intro" is a quote from Shakespeare's Hamlet, just doesn't say here ", Horatio"... 😉
Grew up on Maiden, had my bedroom wallpapered with Eddie, when I took world history as a senior in HS, I already had Alexander the Great covered because of the song from Iron Maiden. Steve’s songs have a lot of references to actual historical figures, literature, etc. Iron Maiden is a history lesson to song.
AND NICK MCBRAIN STILL NAILED IT CONTINUING THE TOUR, PERFORMING TOP LEVEL AT THE INDIO CALIFORNIA FESTIVAL, THE DEDICATION IS JUST ON ANOTHER LEVEL, UP THE IRONS, TIME IS PASSING AND THERE WILL BE A MOMENT WHERE IRON MAIDEN WON’T BE ABLE TO CONTINUE 😭 BUT WELL, EVERYTHING HAS IT’S TIME😢, BUT ANYWAYS, ENJOY THE MUSIC, ‘CAUSE AS BRUCE SAID IN THAT 2011 CONCERT ANY FAN THAT LOVES IRON MAIDEN IS PART OF IRON MAIDEN, SO AS LONG AS WE KEEP THE LEGACY ALIVE, IRON MAIDEN WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON❤❤❤💪
Yeah, Iron Maiden is SUCH a live band. Nicko listens to Steve's bass and all of the guitars. He's always been such a "responsive" drummer, even in the early days (the early 80s =), following Steve's aweome bass rhythm and the basic rhythm of all the guitars. Since Bruce and Adrian re-joined in late 1998 (iirc) the whole band has just come together more and more with every album, even though they've naturally had individual struggles and what-not (ffs it's been 25 years and they've made awesome album after awesome album) and the last few albums have been that they just share their songs with eachother and then they come together in the studio and main-take the recordings simultaneously and then there are fine-tunings and extras recorded.
I boldly predict there will never be such a band ever again in living memory, unless people start appreciating them more for what they are =) There certainly won't be a similar band in the next 30 years, there simply ISN'T the environment for an actual instrument-playing band to gain the live experience of nearly 40 years of playing gigantic stadium audiences on tour and honing their craft to this level. Please remember i'm saying this with sadness, also remember i hope i get to see THIS band live for many years to come =) Nicko is 71 years old, he's had a stroke but he's 90-95 percent back, so i SINCERELY hope i get to see Maiden live at least once more! My confidence is about 99%! Up the FUCKING Irons!
You should react to Dire straits - Sultans of swing, make sure it is the Alchemy live performance. One of, if not the greatest live performance ever in my opinion, and Terry Williams kills it on the drums!
You mentioned keyboards that you heard and are right. There are lot of keyboards in maiden songs and they are played by the bass tech stage left in the wings
@@AndrewRooneyDrums yes they did a documentary film about this tour called behind the beast that goes in to all the people behind the scenes as well as all the background about their plane ed force one that Bruce Dickinson flys them around in on tour
