I have started an Iron Maiden playlist | ua-cam.com/play/PLqspKksRqaUXelfPThRPADmUB1cO7LT3K.html
I think this could be the beginning of a love affair similar to that I have had with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin :)
Fully on board with this potential Maiden obsession.
Definitely worth checking out Clive Burr stuff from the first three albums, there's still a good amount of footage of that era online, and Maiden aren't arsey about use for reaction vids.
I just found your channel but for a drummer I think the song you need to check out is where eagles dare off the piece of mind album. It was the kick ass introduction of nicko as Iron Maidens new drummer and its killer on drums.
No other musician ever looks as happy as Nicko when he's playing.
I can just think in one, Marco Minneman, another drummer who’s always happy while is performing
Kai Hahto is often smiling too while playing
No kidding huh. Every video
You really can’t beat Iron Maiden for a live show. Amazing combination of chops, crowd interaction, band interaction, theatricality. And they always look like they’re having a great time. Brilliant, From the beginning, and still today.
One of my very first concerts was Ghost, Slayer and Iron Maiden in 2013, I was 13 yrs old and I remember I didn't eat anything during the day because I was so exicted lol, it really didn't hit me until Maiden set ended, I just remember it being one of the most craziest experiences of my life, the setlist was insane too, best show I've ever attended
Epic. I said after the last Maiden video that you could pick any song from this show. This was a great choice. "Sign of the Cross" is another epic song from this show.
True.
Nicko is one of those people that actually qualifies as a good human being. He's one of those guys that you hope you'll run into in a bar somewhere and can just shoot the shit about every day stuff and feel better when you leave.
Nicko is naturally funny, I went to a benefit gig for Clive Burr at Hammersmith and before they started Nicko comes on stage in his dressing gown with a cup of tea and proceeds to tell jokes, what a nice way to start the gig, lovely fella
Amazing
Nicko was always a single kick guy barring one song on the Dance of Death album - Face in the Sand
True. Lovely song, by the way.
True, I believe it was a double pedal borrowed from his son as an experiment! I read that he tried it with single but couldn’t last the whole song, so he’s human after all 🤣
He hasn't played one-kick for a long time, it became clearly audible on the "brave new world"
Yes, and there is a lot of double kick on the "factor x"😉💙💛💪✌️
No it is not. Even the Ghost of the Navigator kick lick was one-kick. First study then talk please. Thank you.
@@zdenkonouzovsky6947 "Dream of mirrors"🙂
In addition, one bass drum does not mean that there is only one pedal for it. There is such a thing as a double bass pedal.
I've seen Iron Maiden up close, from the nosebleeds, and everywhere in between, and they're always one of the tightest and most joyously fun live bands I've ever seen
I'm in love with Maiden since i was 13. i am 32 now and the more i watch maiden in rio 2001, the more i'm convinced it's a perfect show. Everything and everyone are so on point that i'm truly honest when i say this is, to me, the best rock and metal concert ever.
I feel the same, you can tell they were having the time of their lives and genuinely left speechless by the crowd partecipation
Yeah this is so special and authentic
As always a lot of energy in an iron Maiden concert, absolutely brilliant 😊
Hey hey from New England...Yes Nico is a single kick player and he also plays barefoot so he really can feel that pedal...I saw them in 2019 and although they only played for under 2 hrs the show itself was amazing 🤘✌️🧐
Rock In Rio was my introduction to Iron Maiden and I have been a die hard fan ever since! The Wicker Man from Rock In Rio is an outstanding track to see Nicko’s insane single kick speed and power on the chorus. They are outstanding live, they are band that cares so much about their fans and putting on the best show they can, even Nicko after his stroke this year felt bad about not being top notch for the first leg of the tour, they respect the fans and this is why a Maiden show is incredible. Also this show had 250,000 people. And Nicko is only single kick, never played double except on song in the studio on the Dance Of Death record, he has a workshop video where he goes over his single pedal technique. More maiden!
The single kick on the chorus of Wicker Man is mind (and leg) blowing. Utterly amazing
@@pillarhood471 I remember my best friend at the time and me loosing our minds when we first watched the DVD (it took me two months of saving my allowance to afford it) and we watched Rock In Rio every single weekend for two years straight, and it never stopped blowing my mind.
@@matthewpoburyny5147 Hahahaha, right on! It’s an amazing concert
Nicko lives in my state and has a little BBQ place in south Florida. I've been to his anniversary celebration for Rock n Roll Ribs and been maybe 10 yards from him watching. Single kick and just awesome seeing a world class drummer up close
Hallowed be thy name 1982 live in Hammersmith. Clive burr on the drums
greatest heavy metal band ever. You get amazing rock ‘n’ roll with a history lesson with the most unbelievable energy you can ever ask for. It is a must to see these geniuses live, and I can’t wait for the next tour to go see them again.
There are so many things to say about Maiden. I bought their Number of the Beast album solely because of the album cover, which was so cool, and after hearing the music I became a fan. Nicko is the crazy one, in a good way, in the band. His interviews show his personality. He always calls himself the "good looking one" in the band, and that they keep him hidden behind the drums. lol. He's the character..And even though he had a stroke in January 2023, and says he is only back to around 70% but still getting better, he is still amazing at 71 years of age. Maiden puts out a lot of videos, would love to see an isolated video of Nicko for an entire show. And I am not even a musician. Just love seeing his drumming. loI I have always loved their tempo changes in their songs. Have seen them over 20 times and have never seen them "phone in" a show. It always felt like the show I was seeing at that time was the most important show they ever played. It's obvious that they still love what they are doing. I always thought their shows were amazing in the 80's, but their recent tours that I have seen, Book of Souls and Legacy of the Beast were even better. Am looking forward to seeing their Somewhere Back in Time tour when it comes to the US. Maiden got to the level they are at, without support from mainstream media. Maiden did it their way. With constant albums and huge tours in the early years. Steve Harris had a vision and made it happen. The ultimate success story.
I'm 60 and this is one of my all-time favorite bands. ALL are equally good in their own field, all topped with one of the greatest rock singers' voices ever. I can't say enough about this band I was smoking weed at age 12, where their songs and playing took me to another world. No, it was not the weed, for I still feel the same for this band. They still are wildly skilled.
Nicko has recorded one double bass song with Maiden; Face in the Sand off 2003's Dance of Death album. But he has repeatedly said he just doesn't feel the desire to play with double bass - citing; that there are so many other great metal drummers already doing it this way. I guess the single bass is part of the maiden sound and one of their points of differences
Listening to Iron Maiden is like being at home. 30 years listening to this band...fucking great
Maiden are an absolute joy live. I’ve seen them 13 times since 2003 and they’ve delivered every time.
As you said, you can feel the camaraderie and fun radiating off the stage.
And believe me, Nicko’s foot IS that fast…any time you think it might be a double, just remember it IS a single kick.
I've had the privilege of seeing Iron Maiden live 4 times. To this day, the best concerts I have ever been to. I've loved them since the early 90's and wish I had discovered them much earlier. Thanks for the reaction!
This is the best Live-Performance from Maiden EVER!!!!
Remember this was the tour when Bruce and Adrian re-joined IM. That is why there is such a jovial and renewed happiness within the band. This tour after the release of Brave New World was probably one of their best after the Powerslave tour in '84-85.
I love this song, the performance is amazing. Nicko super
That Rock in Rio show is regarded as one of their best, with a great new album at the time, really only let down by the shoddy film crew - Maiden had to spend a lot of time salvaging the footage to get that DVD together, still awesome.
I never heard that about the film crew…I know Steve edited the footage himself, and he does himself NO favors with his frenetic cutting style.
It’s still a fantastic show to watch and listen to, but I wish Steve had let professionals edit it so it would linger on some cool shots longer.
@@keefriff99 I believe some of the jumping around for this DVD was due to the poor quality of footage - at least that what I read in the 2000s.
Don't remember anything about bad footage. I do remember lots of complaints about Steve's editing when this came out. I do know the TV broadcast of the show is so much better visually. The actual filming quality might not be as great, but the editing and composition doesn't give me a headache.
They are the greatest metal band of all time without doubt. 🤘
To anyone who hasn't seen Iron Maiden live... Just make it happen while they're still touring! They're SUCH a live band, the spirit and the feeling at one of their shows is incredible. STILL to this day, they're killing it live! I've seen them live 10+ times since june 2003 at the olympic stadium in Stockholm and my latest show was in Gothenburg at Ullevi stadium in 2022. That show was just awesome and very emotional as well. I bought the tickets in the fall of 2019 iirc and the show was supposed to be in june of 2020 but it was pushed back twice. The setlist and the delivery were just epic.
I'm 35 and I god damn wish I had as much energy as Bruce has on stage 😅 My knees ain't doing those dances anymore.
They made a whole live DVD of their performance during the Rock in Rio festival in 2001 where this is from. The entire set is just as amazing as this.
I was 17 when this live album came out, it just awesome!!
🙌
There is a reason people watch them live time after time...9 times for me. They always deliver with energy, joy and professionalism and you know you're in for a treat. Even watching them on video proves their mastery. Even today, close to their 70s, they still deliver. Amazing.
Nicko said in an interview once that he will never play double bass drums. He doesn't want to, though it sounds like it sometimes.
Yes! Looking forward to this one!
Hope you like it!
If my memory serves me, the only instance of Nicko playing double kick was in the song "Face In the Sand". Other than that, I believe he considers the double bass "undrummerish" or something to that effect. You should check out "Dream of Mirrors" as well. His bass work in that song is incredible.
Maiden is hands down one of my all time favorite bands, both studio recording, and live. If you have not seen them live DO IT while they are still touring. the on stage presence, energy and love they have for the music and the friendship they have with each other can be seen and felt in the audience. I've been a fan since I first saw them in 1982 with the Scorpions and Girlschool
One of my favourite bands ever. I still remember crowd singing Fear of the Dark at a concert back in 2004 and it was just amazing. The atmosphere there that night was something I'll never forget!
Greetings from Brazil ! I was there, right in front of the control tower !
I’m still amazed at what Nicko does with a single bass pedal.
Yup! Great right foot!
Great reaction. One of the reasons they look like they are having so much fun, is because they are. Bruce and Adrian had left the band in the early 90's. The band reunited in 1999 for a short tour. Put out a brand new album in 2000 then followed that with a massive world tour with sold out shows. Which ended with show in front of 250,000 people.
YEP - Nic is a single kick player. The ONE exception was a studio recording of a song called Face In The Sand, which he tried (and by his own admission failed) with a single but had to give in and use the double. Other than that - single kick all the way
The best concert of theirs.
Proud of my local boys.
I adored their Brave New World. 💯% Rock. I love that everyone gets involved
I’ve seen Maiden on every tour since 1995 and their shows just get better.
The Future Past tour was ridiculous.
Nicko has always been a single pedal player.
He said himself he can’t play double peddle.
Although the did use one for Face
In the Sand off Dance of Death.
Great video mate 👍🏻
They are so together and bet really good friends.
Andrew, to truly appreciate Nicko's single kick mastery, you must check out "loneliness of the long distance runner" album track off of Somewhere in Time. You will be amazed, I promise.
I have seen Maiden 164 times from the first time i saw them in 1977 & the last time i saw them 2023 at the 02 Arena in London i can honestly say they are just the same as the first time i saw them listen to The Wicker Man live from the same concert UP THE IRONS
Thank you so much for your touching reaction.
Iron Maiden is the best story-telling Metal band, in my opinion. Still, after all these decades. But their music is a lot more refined, since they started in the 1980's, and obviously there are a few more people watching. ;-)
Iron Maiden produced *tons of Metal masterpieces* in the decades of their existence.
After having listened to Iron Maiden for about *40* years now, I got to know the Japanese Metal band "Lovebites" a few weeks ago. They are an absolute recommendation from my side. Whoever is excited of Iron Maiden, should give Lovebites a try, by all means. "Metal witout remorse", I always say about Lovebites. They were founded in 2016, in Japan, and released 4 studio albums up to now, with *not one bad song* amongst them. What an achievement. 5 female world class musicians, re-defining Metal.
I NEED to see them one last time before the end is here.
Only saw them twice, both time front stage. Amazing moments!!!
Do more. More. And more!!!
An excellent reaction to Niko would undoubtedly be "Moon child" live in Puerto Rico by Fly 666...
Nicko is the master of the single kick!!! One of a kind!
Absolute God tier. All of them.
I believe that no other bands love doing it as much as these guys
I've seen every tour, or close to, since mid 80's. Great energy even when e.g. Nicko is 71 years old and he had cancer earlier but got better before the 2023 tour.
RS eu estava nesse show, foi no Rock in Rio no Brasil, primeiro show do Iron que eu assisti...
The band has fun, the crowd have fun and we have fun #FunAllRoundWithMaiden
Yes!
15:09 Listen to "Caught Somewhere in Time" single kick.. he told in an interview it is "un-drummerlike"to use double bassdrum, he uses high-hat to count.. very prominent in studio version of Rhymy of the ancient Mariner
One of the tightest live bands I ever saw 🍻
Saw these guys in '19 and was truly impressed with them as a live group in their 60's. They really can bring it....still.
Drummer Nico is such a laugh, such a nice bloke also, not a bad drummer🤘🏻😁😁🏴
A Hale and Pace clip at the start, didn't see that coming!
LOVE Hale & Pace!
Best live band for me and i'm talking different genres. I listen to a lot of different music but these guys... they're special. I'm in my late 40 so might be biased lol
There was 250.000 peoples in that concert. It was amazing...!!!
YIKES
Andy, that is pretty much every Maiden show. I’ve seen nearly every tour since Piece of Mind and every show is high energy. Dave always has that smile on his face, Nicko is always putting on a show behind the kit. You always get your moneys worth at a Maiden show. 👍🏼
Nicko has only ever used double kick once, on the song Face in the Sand from the "Dance of Death" album. And he apparently hated it. Everything else- EVERYTHING- is single pedal only. He is a monster.
Iron Maiden, referent for many generations, always delivering amazing performances, I saw couple of times and the atmosphere they create is totally mindblowing, one of my favourites bands ever, Up the Irons
Wow. What a fun performance.
That's a +1 from a McTaggart (BTW, love Dunedin and Puget Sound; that's the correct landscape for a celt)
If you want to see/hear Nicko's lightning fast single pedal, check out the songs The Wicker Man or Ghost of The Navigator
@AndrewRooneyDrums this is the Famous Rock in Rio 2001 liveshow, over 250.000 people were there. it was the first live album with Maiden as a 3 piece guitar band band. this whole show is a joy to watch from front to back. so i really hope you will watch this show as a whole. Cause its a near flawless show. my first live show i ever bought at 15 years off age ( im almost 35) this is Maiden at peak form, Live Album was recorded at the Last day off their Brave new World tour. Both Adrian Smith and Brice Dickinson came back to the band after years off absence Smith left in 1990 Dickinson left in 1993. did a short tour in 1999. Recorded Brave new world in late 1999 early 2000. this live show cemented Maiden as one off the best live bands in the 2000 area. as this show progresses you can see moist appearing above the crowd thats how much the crow was sweating as Rio is quite humid. Nicko has always been a Single pedal kicker. Nicko even had to practice the drum pattern for Where eagles dare before the recordings off the peiceo off mind album started.
my favourite band since I've ever remembered,
IRON MAIDEN...
Love Iron Maiden!!!
You will definitely have to go and see them if they go near you, they are awesome live.
Can I recommend a couple of others for you to try
When the wild wind blows - such a complex song
Paschendale
14:49 the only time Nicko has ever used double kick is on the song “Face In The Sand” from their 2003 album “Dance Of Death”.
There’s an interview he did with comedian “The Pub Landlord” Al Murray which he talks about that song and how they had to do some studio magic because his left foot was a lot quieter than his right.
They act like this all through the concert it's😊 you have to go see them live
Incredible energy
Amazing
Nicko plays with one pedal and is the best in the world! Rock In Rio is one of the best live shows of all time! Just more Maiden reaction videos! Up The Irons🤘
Besides Face In The Sand from Dance of Death, Nicko has always used a single pedal. His quote as to why is classic Nicko. He said it feels "Undrummerish."
I was there in 2001 ! Amazing
There are only three bands playing that you will not feel complete without attending a live show: Iron Maiden, Rammstein and Nightwish. Not necessarily in that order, but really they are a must for anyone who claims to love music. Trying to absorb the all package is almost impossible, such is the quality of visual effects, the music and interaction between band and public. No other band, right now, is capable of beating them.
Seen them 4 times.
Puerto Rico
Los Angeles x2
Rock in Rio ‘23
Insanity.
Andrew, I hope you get to see Maiden before they retire. You will not be disappointed. I've seen them 5 times. Phenomenal. Up the Irons!
You’ll need to check out Run to the Hills with Clive Burr on drums who was in Iron Maiden before Nicko. Not sure what the best footage is but it’s a drumming tour de force.
When next in the uk I will see them,my youngest daughter will get good tickets one of the guitarists twin daughters are her friends and godmothers to her son Elwood
The first time he ever recorded a song with a double kick was AFTER this concert, and I'm pretty sure it's still just that 1 song he double kicks on. Absolute monster.
You should watch "Sign of the cross" from this "Rock in Rio" concert.
Fear of the dark live,it is perfection
Rock in Rio 2001 my fav from maiden 💜✨🎸living legend here
UP THE IRONS 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
13:54...up to halfway 2013 there was only one band that rivalled them in a full show, still Maiden 1...but Nightwish on 2...and both learned alot from Pink Floyd and Cirque du Soleil
Great video, probably one of the best showings of Nickos ability, the bass work, hitched snare etc is awesome, but considering the video is done by a drum teacher, I'm disappointed that more has not been made of Nickos performance.
This song strikes differently now that we will "own nothing and be happy".
Thank you for doing this
Thanks for watching!
I've been fortunate to see Maiden live 4 times. The best was without a doubt in Oslo in 2003. They pretty much played the Rock In Rio set, and I got a hold of one of Nicko's drum sticks that he threw out to the audience. Their music gives instant goosebumps.
oh yes if you want to see bruce play the drums he does on bruce dickinson dive dive live no lies. it was a small stage so when wasn't singing he'd go back and bang away on the drums.
Still one of the best live bands on the planet - if you ever get a chance to see them live, do not turn it down! Amazing musicianship and they put on a great show every time.
Yes, he's always been a single kick guy. Only in two songs he used a double bass: Face in The Sand (Dance of Death) and in the *intro* of Satellite 15 (The Final Frontier). And that's only in the studio recordings, cause those two are never played live (the second was, but not with the live intro). Also I'm pretty sure that those two are ok to play on single pedal, he might have recorded that way cause of the way it would sounds in the album (just opinion here). He's kicks on Out of Silent Planet, Dream of Mirrors and Fortunes of War are awesome.
I was there ! The good thing of getting old is that concerts you went as a teen are now classic performances 😊
It was the first tour of maiden with three guitarists right after Bruce and Adrian Smith got back to the band. They left rock in rio to be the last show of the tour so they could record the DVD.
Maiden don't tour between albums, they release albums between tours!
on the history of iron maiden pt 1 they talk of nicko when he joined and said he th9ought a double kick is undrummerly.
on the same one the bass tech said at the end of a show water would be pouring out of steve's shoes. they all must lost a lot of water
In that concert were around 250,000 people
If you want to see Nicko play drums without any of the DVD recording production stuff, watch him play drums at on of the anniversary gigs for his restaurant Rock n Roll Ribs.
Erik Sandin from NOFX uses single kick. And he'll play punk beats ALL night, perfect every time!
