I am lucky to live near Harts Fabric in Santa Cruz. It is family owned since 1969 and is filled with a variety of great fabrics, from fashion to quilting to Japanese imports, silks etc.

I have a somewhat dangerous relationship with fabric-mart, lol. I love them. They are darling people, have thorough product pages, and have great sales. They are my main source of fabric, but I also enjoy my little coupon and Miss Matatabi. Shipping can be an extra expense and not the most environmentally friendly, but I have found great deals at half the price of shops in the US (where I live). If I am shopping in person, VOGUE. Not just because it's all we have in Chicagoland, but also for the experience and quality. Sure it isn't a giant wonderland of textures anymore, but the warehouse vibe is also cool and they still have a massive selection. Sometimes I have to limit myself to placing an online order and picking it up at the store because I will go a little crazy. To be honest, my textile research and collection is my primary hobby. Sewing is secondary, but garment sewing is just a small part of that, for me. I love this topic. Shameless plug... I am working on my own little shop. I was official in February 2023, but it's only me! There is only so much I can do in a wheelchair and while working a full-time job. Wish me luck, friends!

A million years ago, Vogue Fabrics in Evanston sure was a candy store for fabric addicts! When I lived in town I recall the rush of combing through the walls and bins full of one delight after another. It was hard to get out in less than 1-2 hours. Fishman's in Chicago is another old line store. It has been a few years now but I recall being impressed by their feather light ultra luxe wool and cashmere suiting and specialty silks.

@Lighthouse1852 100% agree I visited the old format once, and I lost my mind. It was the definition of "but wait! There is more." Thanks for the suggestion! I will check out Fishmans!

Wow. So disappointing how inaccessible sewing can be. ~$50+ per yard? Or pay for a membership/subscription to get discounts? 😞

I'm not sure where you're seeing $50/yard. The stores we're talking about in this video generally carry garment fabrics that are between $8-20/yard. Upholstery fabrics are where you'll find higher prices per yard.

These are all great and I shop most of them regularly. (Will definitely have to give the new-to-me ones a try!)
Minerva is also a favorite of mine for incredible selection, and they are also family-run.

I live in Canada. Unfortunately, shopping from American online retailer is cost prohibitive with shipping and duties. I resort to shopping from Canadian retailers only, which thankfully we have a decent selection of. Once in a while, for very special fabric, I will order from the UK. For some reason shipping from the UK is a lot more reasonable than from the US.

Core Fabrics in Montreal is a great online store (they partner with Closet Core patterns) for all types of fabric like linen,
deadstock & designer, knits, flannel, etc. - great seasonal choices. Their customer service is wonderful too. I live in Chicago & have ordered from them many times, very happy with their fabric.

Thank you for this! My favorite online store is Morex Fabrics. Very reasonably priced with free (included) shipping. I also shop at the chain stores like Joann’s but I’m looking for more shops like these to get more variety.

Before the pandemic i would order from Marcy Tilton and drive 45 minutes across Canadian/American border to pick up my parcel. Now i shop Closet Core and BlackBird, Five Arrow, in Canada.

Interesting content, but ... sorry ... to fast spoken and to quick changes of frames for my European, not English brain.

Emma Onesock is a great resource for unusual and not crazily priced fabric. Really nice people too. They are super helpful and professional. I’ve gotten such pretty fabrics from them I can’t bring myself to cut the fabric!

If you mean high end suiting, coating and shirting, Britex in San Francisco is famous. Fishman's in Chicago. Gorgeous Fabrics usually carries some fine menswear material. Mood Fabrics might, too.

Califabrics and Vogue Fabrics are my two favorites! Great prices and great quality. Emmas prices are too high for me. Stylemaker is out of my price range too. I sew to save money so I won’t pay a lot for fabric.

Beautiful Textiles is an online fabric store in Clawson, MI. They have wonderful goods. Also, Gorgeous Fabrics owner Ann Steeves carries great goods. AND Fabric Mart fabrics is a year round go-to online fabric store for me. They have rotating sales just about every day of the year.
