Our family has bean wearing hand-made clothes for 20 years, and the pieces from 12 years back look still as good, so we keep wearing them and expanding our wardrobe.
I’m so happy to find a Michigander on UA-cam. I live in Grosse Pointe Park, and I remember when Habersham was in Royal Oak, and I always wonder where they moved to. I know where I will be going this weekend. I have great luck at thrift stores in estate sales, that works very well for me.
Thank you for the great delivery in your videos. You're intro is short and to the point and every nanosecond of the whole video is informative. Thanks so very much!
Hi Casey! Thanks for the shout out for me and for the store 🤗 really good info in this video we must be on the same wavelength I did a similar video last week.
It’s my goal to be able to sew well enough to make a blouse with liberty. Someday 😂. I am glad Joanns makes it available. But it is expensive for sure!
I live in the Cotswolds in the UK, and it’s very limited in fabric shops. I usually have to buy online, which is time consuming, as I need to buy samples first. I’d love to have half the shops you have! We have a few little shops, but they tend to be craft type shops. Thank you for your channel, I’m really enjoying the content.
Absolutely spectacular! Thank you sooo much! I have been telling so many people about your patterns! I was actually wearing a dress of yours while I was in Denver at a fabric shop. Told the ladies all about your patterns! Also, still want to treat you and your hubby to a sightseeing flight! Have a fabulous week!
Always great information! I’ve sewn my children a lot of clothes but now I’m ready to start sewing for myself now that I am done growing humans. I tried once when I was pregnant to make a maternity outfit and that was a mess and a ton of fabric 🤣
Thanks so much for this video! I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can about choosing fabric for garments so this came at a perfect time for me. Love your channel!
I recently discovered your channel, and I was impressed, mostly because you kept having the same weather as I was. Then I discovered that you were living in Lansing, and it started to make sense because I also live in Lansing! Thanks for the heads-up about the Seams store and I'd love to know which thrift store has fabric. Finally, I have seen very nice but expensive fabric at the Novi Sewing Expo from Fabrications located in Richland near K'zoo. Finally, for a fabric-feeler like me, Vogue Fabrics in Evanston, Ill. near Chicago is bliss. It is where I go to say, "NO, I'M NOT READY TO LEAVE!!!"
Oh it's a small world! Hello neighbor! :) Yes, definitely check out Seams...it's a great little shop! The thrift store is the St. Vincent De Paul over in REO Town. They have a great little craft/sewing/knitting section that is very well organized (I was just in there a couple of days ago and picked up some vintage sewing patterns). They also have a fun vintage clothing section. Basically the whole store is very well organized--it's small but I almost always find stuff there and really enjoy perusing. And thank you so much for the sewing expo recommendation! And I have ordered fabrics from Vogue Fabrics and they are great--it's been a while, ,so thank you for the reminder! I love those types of places! :)
I’m so grateful you turned me on to Cali Fabrics! They are so great for knit and athletic fabric. Lately I’ve been loving Core Fabrics, I really appreciate knowing the story behind the people who made the fabric when they share that info and their videos showing how the fabric moves and giving pattern ideas.
super helpful video! I've never purchased fabrics online ~ so it's great to have a personal review. Clever idea to keep a box of labeled sample fabrics... When I was college age, I recall going to Cali Fabrics in San Francisco with my mom to find fabric for a special occasion formal dress...it was like Disneyland for fabrics...and such a popular store that the warehouse controlled the number of people allowed inside so we waited in line for our turn ( which added to the anticipation and worth every minute). Thanks for all the tips!
I'm so glad it was helpful! I have become much more comfortable with ordering online over the years and have found some really great fabrics that I can't find locally. Love the story about Cali Fabrics! Thanks for watching! :)
I love Fields Fabrics! One of their locations is only about a five minute drive from my house, and I have gotten to know a few of the ladies who work there. They are always willing to dive in and help me with even my weirder projects - a lion tamer jacket, a Jem costume, or an inside out Sherpa sweatshirt that keeps stretching out and fluffing all over my house. Besides Fields, though, I shop at JoAnn and am online shop called Sugared Sage. The latter focuses on eco-friendly fabrics, and I have been incredibly happy with all of my purchases from them. I got into garment sewing because my now-twelve year-old daughter wanted to learn, and I think she and I are going to have to take a trip to East Lansing one of these days to visit the fabric store you mentioned! 🥰
I definitely agree that the folks at Field's are super friendly and helpful! Thanks for the recommendation for Sugared Sage--I hadn't heard of it and will look it up! And for sure check out Seams next time you are in town, I always find something pretty there!
If you are ever over here in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and find yourself Hamilton. Moreland fabrics, davids emporime and backstreet bargins are good options
I didn’t know you’re Michigan based as well - and yes, Habermans is awesome but note Discount Fabrics is RIGHT down the street and super affordable including their upholstery and home dec fabrics which can be crazy money (and sometimes will work well for coating)
Thank you so much for your videos. I’ve done a fair amount of sewing when I was younger, waited a lot of years and now ready to start in again. So, I do have a minor comment… has anyone mentioned that you speak incredibly fast? Possibly I feel this way as I’m not young anymore, but a senior. I can only listen to one or two videos without needing a break. Again, I really enjoy your videos and actually grew up in Lansing and attended MSU. I also know how gloomy our Michigan winters are. I have all ‘daylight’ bulbs in my home, and even a ‘sun light’ to ward off the blues.
Hover your mouse cursor over the video. You should see some icons pop up in the lower right corner. One of them is a "gearwheel." Hover over that and you'll see it says "settings." One of those is for playback speed. Click on that and it will show you several options. You'll probably be happiest choosing "Custom" and move the slider to 0.8 or 0.85. I hope this helps :)
I’ve been totally binge watching your channel! Thank you for sharing your talents with us, I love your videos! Do you have a type of thread that you typically use? Cotton vs multi-use? That sort of thing.
Ah I love knowing that! Thank you so much! I use Gutermann thread almost exclusively, and usually the polyester all purpose thread. They have different threads for specialty applications as well. I really like their Mara 70 topstitching thread for making jeans too. :)
Thank you Casey for the advice. My local fabric stores are awful, they DON'T carry quality fabrics at all. I bought some wonderful matrix paper from Mood Fabrics. I had a good experience with them. I see they were on your list. I'll try them as well as the others. THX!!!
This was helpful! It’s fun to hear how other people shop and get some tips. It was so fun to see you mention Field’s! I work there! I don’t know if it’s just the location I work at but it often feels more quilt centric so it was encouraging to hear that you have found some things. Thanks also for mentioning other shops in Michigan. I wasn’t sure what else there was so I’m interested to check those out. A customer recently mentioned that Rainbow Fabrics in Chicago is a good place to check out.
Oh that's so cool!! Small world! :) I haven't heard of rainbow fabrics, I will keep that one in my back pocket in case I'm ever over that way! Thanks for watching!
I get my fabric on market here they have lot of choice now. Love stretch fabric causa do not need to iron after you washed them. 😅 big hugs from Italy 😊
I've just found your channel and I'm really happy to have come across it. Fabric Mart in Pennsylvania has some great buys. I live in Canada so I don't buy from there often. They charge almost as much to ship the package to me as the fabric cost. Fabricville and Fabric Fabric are two Canadian stores that I've found have good fabric. Fabricville always has a buy 1, get 2 sale, meaning buy 1 yard, get 2 free.
Thanks for a very informative video. Look forward to more tips. I’m in the U.K. and we don’t get coupons like you do! I also got stung on the half metre sale amount, what made it worse is that they had run out so I was left with fabric to be stored until I can find a use for it! 🥰
I just found your channel and while watching this, finally realized you’re in my state. Hello fellow Michigander! Have you checked Discount Fabric Outlet in Clawson (it’s about 1/2 miles east from Haberman)? I’ve yet to get over there but it looks like they have a lot of stuff and nothing is over $7.99/yard.
I made a bunch of heirloom children’s clothes that are beautiful but I used quilting cotton and of course they require ironing! Do you know where to buy cute no-iron children’s fabrics?? TYSM!
Great info and suggestions! If you have time to answer, how much fabric do you buy if you’re not sure which project you’re going to use it for? Thanks!
More awesome info -- thank you! I've been mostly shopping from my own stash (fabric hoarders unite!), but I've been really happy with my purchases from Fabric Warehouse Direct. I love their muslin, and their solid basics like rayon challis, flannel, cotton voile and ponte di roma are great; lots of colours, at very affordable prices. I also got some of their stretch denim for a jumpsuit and loved it. And they have swatches! Their customer service is also top notch. This is starting to sound like an ad -- I promise I don't work for them! 😄They're just a little not-so-secret gem for some basics...
Ok you sold me on FWD! I need to check them out (I feel like I have browsed on their site a few times and never made a purchase, but with this endorsement I might have to haha!). ;)
Hello, I love this video. I am checking out some of these websites right at this moment. I do love the blouse you are wearing, I am sure I saw that on your website/channel and it caught my eye. What type of fabric is it? is it a polyester or cotton? Thanks:)
Thanks Casey for these tips etc. Had no idea there were free samples online so did a quick search here in Australia and found a few but they are from Eastern Australia which is good anyway I am from the Western Australia. So looks like I might order some samples and see how I go etc.
Thank you for this information-I learn so much from your videos! I recently went to a sale of precut/pre-owned fabric. I picked up two pieces of beautiful linen. When I got home I washed all the fabrics…the linen came out of the dryer without a wrinkle. What fabric mixes with linen to create the fewest wrinkles? Again thx for sharing your expertise😊
Oh I'm so glad to know that! Thanks so much for watching my videos :) I love finding little gems like that! I'm not sure what the blend might be--but it sounds awesome!
I would like to win the Janome Pink Lightening OR the Janome 1522 DG either one would be fantastic to replace my old used machine. Thank you for all you do.
Hi Casey, I have just found your channel and have subscribed - I love your approach and style! This video was really helpful - thank you! I find that I end up buying off-cuts of fabric, but then am not sure what I can do with 2-3 metres, so a video with suggestions for using up smaller lengths of fabric would be really appreciated. Thanks!
I love fabric mart. They have sales all the time. Beautiful fabrics from designers, and from Italy and Europe. The shipping is 9:99 but there’s always shipping sales as well. If you watch for the shipping sales, you can get free, or nearly free shipping.
When you impulse buy, do you have a particular garment in mind so you know how much yardage you need? Dress? Slacks? Blouse? Or if not, how much yardage do you buy just because you love that fabric.
I can usually dream up a project idea when I find the fabrics...so for tops I'll usually get about 1.5 to 2 yards and for pants and dresses I'll get anywhere from 2 to 3 yards to be safe. And sometimes I'll get more if I think there is a possibility for multiple projects, haha. I feel like 2 yards is a safe bet for a lot of projects, depending on the fabric width. Hope that is helpful! :)
@@PatternScout Very helpful. Thank. you. I'm trying to get started sewing something for myself. Mostly just watching hours of UA-cam videos (I really like yours) to get up the nerve.
@PatternScout Can you help me figure out if there is a pattern to do a scrub jumpsuit long sleeve? I have tried to google and search on youtube with no luck. The one I currently have is 71% polyester 21% rayon and 7% spandex, however, I am having issues with deciding which fabric to buy when searching online. Any advice you have would be great!
It appears that I am going to have to find somewhere to hide so that I can just binge watch all of your videos. I am 5'8" with broad shoulders and my tits are too big so I've hated RTW my whole life, so I so appreciate your advice on cloning/altering those almost perfect pieces. Very glad to have found your channel! ❤️
@patternscout I’m just wondering what you would use cotton sateen for? I’m new to sewing and I just loved the pattern on it but now am a little lost as to what to sew. Any ideas welcomed. I initially wanted to sew a couple of blouses. Thank you for your thoughts! And hi from Australia
I've actually never made anything with cotton sateen, so I'm not sure! But I think it is supposed to be really nice for dresses and skirts/bottoms, or maybe tops with a little bit of structure.
Hi Casey I’m trying to get back into clothing construction and I am a bit confused. You mention that linens are a fabric you like and I like the thought of using linen but the linen I see gets SO wrinkled with each simple movement! What am I missing!? Please advise. Marian Taylor.
Hi Marian! Yes, linen does get wrinkly. I have just accepted it as a characteristic of the fabric. It is also so comfortable to wear and easy to sew with, and linen is very strong and will last a long time. Some of my favorite pieces are linen :)
Can I line Crepe de Chine with Cotton lawn fabric? I have a floral azure print in the crepe and a very light natural color in the cotton lawn. I live in a humid and hot state so I don’t want to weigh it down.
I probably wouldn't pair those two fabrics since they will probably behave differently with moisture and movement and drape. For lightweight fabrics that need a lining, I try to find something with similar fiber and/or drape characteristics. Hope that helps! :)
Years ago, I shopped at Fabricland and House of Fabrics who had beautiful silks, wools, and linens. If wanted something cheap I went to Discount Fabric. Discount Fabrics changed its name to JoAnn’s then bought out Fabricland and House of Fabrics. To me, JoAnn’s is a Michael’s with cheap fabric that costs a lot. They never have quality fabrics. Never have 100% wool, silk, or linen. As you can probably tell, I’m still angry.
They do have 100% linen sometimes, but agree, most of it is a linen blend. But you are right, no silks or wools and I wish so bad they did! My local store recently started carrying LIberty lawns which are gorgeous (but spendy! $$$). So that was an improvement. Finding the really great stuff is a bit of a hunt for sure! JoAnn is convenient but limited.
@@PatternScout I agree. I’m jumping between your video, searching a fabric store you mention, back to the video, reading your comment, and back around the circle. Maybe I’m feeling crabby today, but since when do they sell fabric by the half yard and half meter. Reminds me of when they started selling carpet by the square foot instead of square yard, then up shoots the price. I really enjoy your videos and patterns.
Clearance racks with skirts or dresses that have a lot of yardage when taken apart. Thrift stores often have men’s shirts, especially larger sizes can be fun. I thrifted a Tommy Hilfiger shirt, cut it apart, incorporated it with several other shirting fabrics (color blocking) and used the pocket with logo and the buttons. I giggle every time I wear it!
This is the single most useful sewing video I think I've ever seen.
I enjoy very much your delivery.. very clear, not repetitive ; encouraging but never patronising. Helps us go beyond our skill level.
Thank you.
I am coming back to sewing after decades - long hiatus. ,
Thank you! So glad to know that!
I agree, and she also doesn't try to put on an obnoxious and distracting comedy show like so many other youtubers.
I am also coming back after many years and am learning so much on this channel!
As someone mentioned in the comments, I also tried Fabric Wholesale Direct and have been happy with my purchases. I also get samples, which are very helpful.
I am glad that you pointed out that sewing for yourself is not necessarily saving money. Quality fabric is pricey. My entre into sewing for myself was to create maternity jumpers that I could wear with my bow blouses. Maternity wear for professionals was almost non existent in the late 80's early 90s. And we passed all of our stuff around! However, a me-made constructed garment in quality material will be a a far greater value than the comparable rack.
My humble input on the fabrics: always buy natural, and preferably from good brands. There are only cotton, linen, wool and silk to feel healthy, comfy and beautiful. Also, there are a lot of stock fabrics from high-end fashion houses like Gucci etc, so you can get a really good fabric for reasonable price. I grew up going to the Pendleton Woolen Mills factory store with my grandma, so yes I'm spoiled. She made me a Chanel suit when i was 7.
Thank you for the great delivery in your videos. You're intro is short and to the point and every nanosecond of the whole video is informative. Thanks so very much!
So glad you found it helpful! Thank you for watching!
I get a lot of my fabric from Fabric Wholesale Direct (FWD) and a recent haul from Fabric Mart. Both businesses are New York based.
In Spokane I use Hobby Lobby, Quikting Bee or, of course, Joann Fabrics. Thanks for your videos.
Excellent, thanks! Sometimes I've found full skirts or dresses in the thrift store that have lots of fabric in new condition.
Thanks so much! Yes, repurposing thrifted skirts is a great option!

What a pleasant surprise to hear you're in Lansing! I'll definitely save this video to refer back to for when I'm home.
Could you please do a video on found linens turned into clothes?
I appreciate your being direct, without a lot of unnecessary chit chat. Just found your channel today. Will e back,

The Liberty Lawn fabric is very expensive at Joann’s. It is $35.00 a yard. Beautiful fabric but out of my price range.
It’s my goal to be able to sew well enough to make a blouse with liberty. Someday 😂. I am glad Joanns makes it available. But it is expensive for sure!

This is starting to sound like an ad -- I promise I don't work for them! 😄They're just a little not-so-secret gem for some basics...
Ok you sold me on FWD! I need to check them out (I feel like I have browsed on their site a few times and never made a purchase, but with this endorsement I might have to haha!). ;)
Ok, I just went to their site and holy wow, they have so many awesome fabrics!!! I'm in a rabbit hole now...thanks for the rec!
Yay! And it’s really easy to rack up rewards points with them, too. Happy shopping! 🤩
Thank you !
Hello, I love this video. I am checking out some of these websites right at this moment. I do love the blouse you are wearing, I am sure I saw that on your website/channel and it caught my eye. What type of fabric is it? is it a polyester or cotton? Thanks:)
Thank you! That blouse is made from a polyester that I found at JoAnn fabrics. It's a really pretty fabric!
Thanks Casey for these tips etc. Had no idea there were free samples online so did a quick search here in Australia and found a few but they are from Eastern Australia which is good anyway I am from the Western Australia. So looks like I might order some samples and see how I go etc.
Oh that's great! I order samples a lot (especially for new-to-me fabrics). Thanks for watching! :)
Do you ever thrift clothes for fabric? Thanks learning a lot from your channel:)
Occasionally, but rarely. I used to do that a lot more, but haven't had much luck with it consistently.
Do the patterns like the one you showed here have a recommended amount of yardage I should buy on the packaging?
I like to get some of my fabric at Missouri Star
For knits, Surge fabrics in the US.
Oh, yes!! I think I may have purchased from them in the past! That's a good one!
I would like to win the Janome Pink Lightening OR the Janome 1522 DG either one would be fantastic to replace my old used machine. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks for watching! ❤
A lot of great information, thank you.
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Claire! That is a really good video idea...perfect for summer, too! I'll add it to my todo list :)
@@PatternScout Thanks, Casey - I look forward to the video! I'll be going through your other videos in the meantime.
Thanks for sharing 😋
Very helpful!! Thank you!
So glad! Thanks for watching! :)
Have you tired Stylemaker Fabrics? If you have, any thoughts?
Great info, Casey! What pattern is your blouse? Your upcoming pattern?
Thank you! Yes! It is a pattern I will be releasing later this week 😊 stay tuned!
Thanks! I will.
Fabricmart also has tons of Fabric. But 😫 fabric is not cheap with the shipping etc so yeah shop the sales. I'm with you there! Great tips.
OOh yes, I have been on their site a few times but haven't purchased yet. I'm all about them sales! :)
I love fabric mart. They have sales all the time. Beautiful fabrics from designers, and from Italy and Europe. The shipping is 9:99 but there’s always shipping sales as well. If you watch for the shipping sales, you can get free, or nearly free shipping.
@@francisaugistino701 Really! I didn't know about the shipping sales! 🤔 Thank you!!!
Right. Decades ago used to be cheaper to make one's own clothes. Now mass produced clothes are way cheaper tho not as nice.
Wawak is a lot cheaper for notions and zippers.
I’m glad I found your page and your also a Michigander lol
Great info. Really enjoyed this video!
I'm so glad, thanks for watching! :)
Thanks!
I use Surge Fabric Shop in Lebanon,Mo.
I have heard of them, I need to try them out! Thanks for the rec! :)
Very helpful.
Glad to hear!
Great video today!
Thank you!
Thank you, very informative.
Thanks for watching!
@patternscout Thanks so much for your reply! I’ll look for a pattern that suits my figure and fabric.
If you still have this question, try The Closet Historian here on youtube. Most her makes are from cotten sateen.
@@PatternScout thanks for your reply I just wish it would not be so much.
@@PatternScout thank you
Perfect video.
Thanks!
Have you shopped Olga’s Closet?
In USA I also like Hart's
I haven't tried them yet but want to!
Emma One Sock, and MarcyTilton both offer lovely fabrics online
Hi how to get fabric when on disability and low income
@@kathygann7632 I think they do it so you don't have to purchase a whole extra yard if you only need 1.5 for example--but I hear ya! :)
Could you add the links to all the online fabric stores?
I provided all the store links in the description :)
I want a machine to start a business
Italy clothes which city car fabric
The Joann’s in ,y area fabric for clothing is awful
Super helpful information. Thank you!!!
Very Interesting - and helpful. Thank you!
Sooooo helpful! Thanks so much!
