George Carlin's Advice on Dealing with the 2016 Election

- An Excerpt from George Carlin on Charlie Rose: 3-26-1996
To those incensed by the intentional inaccuracy of the title:
This is not George Carlin literally speaking about the 2016 election 8.5 years after his death, but his outlook on his life and creativity can be applicable to today's grueling social divide. Maybe you disagree and I respect that. I'll admit it's cynical as fuck. This is also not posthumously assigning Carlin to a modern candidate. He claimed that he didn't vote and he never publicly supported any politician. This was posted before the election. It's not intended as a left/right thing, and I didn't monetize it. I'm not selling anything. I posted it to get your attention in case it could inspire some calm in shaky times.
"Inside every cynical person, there is a dissapointed idealist."
-George Carlin
"Scratch a conservative and you find someone who prefers the past over any future. Scratch a liberal and find a closet aristocrat."
--Frank Herbert, _God Emperor Of Dune_
@@negascoot23 I'll second this. Liberals are not left-wing; they're just money, new and old alike.
@@stateofopportunity1286 And I *am* a liberal (by most definitions), I'm just owning my essential nature.
There's a sense of "noblesse oblige" among many liberals (I won't speak for all of us).
We don't like to talk about it, but I think a lot of us would attempt to compel or legislate that which we believe to be good, wise, or beneficial to society if we could...and we would do it with the best of intentions.
But tyranny is tyranny--whether in the name of the ruling class or the common people.
Tyranny in the name of the people is actually *more* dangerous: It's harder to spot, and its leaders really are sincere...
They honestly want to make the world a better place--they just forget that forcing the world to be "a better place" never results in anything but destruction.
(See? I think I'm wise enough to teach you, and whoever else is reading, about these things. Noblesse oblige 😛)
@@negascoot23 Modern liberalism has already embraced tyranny and abandoned the laissez-faire ideals espoused by its progenitors after the fall of Mercantilism. Now that value set is relegated to so-called "Libertarian" circles.
Socially...authoritarian speech restrictions, tribal cultural programming, employment of mob mentality, and legislation/taxation to elicit behavioral change have all been employed with draconian efficiency by liberal politicians, think tanks, and pundits. Stray too far from the Overton Window and you will find yourself on the receiving end of a rapidly deployed witch hunt, regardless of what sort of ideas you were discussing. Even crafting practical plans to address the crises liberals milk for votes will result in ostracization. After all, if one fixes a problem, like the border, one can't use it to buy votes come election time anymore.
Free-trade rhetoric has been hijacked to allow export of production and to leverage the profitability of slavery/indentured servitude against the labor capital of workers in developed countries (outsourcing). Simultaneously, trade blocs were crafted under the auspices of free trade that suppressed the sovereignty of nations under that of private corporations unattached to any particular country. Tribunals were designed to supercede laws imposed by governments, thereby turning them into population middle-management for global non-landed oligarchs. This is the ISDS and the ability of corporations to sue governments for potential lost future profits. Corporations would also be free to invert and relocate to any country in an overlapping network of trade blocs, employing the economic/media structures of loyal nations to sanction and bring to heel any government that disagreed with the plan. Liberal aristocrats enabled and facilitated this. I suppose it shouldn't be surprising that an aristocracy wouldn't share its designs with the larger populous, and that it would craft any narrative necessary to usurp the democratic systems of power.
This era is ending. We will end it.
@@stateofopportunity1286 I'm going to admit it, 90% of what you just wrote is so far beyond my ken that I don't even know if I agree or disagree😜
That's a huge problem in public discourse:
Starting or entering arguments we're completely ignorant about...but we know (or *think* we know) that the other person is on the "opposing team", therefore they are wrong by default.
And if your "enemy" is always wrong, understanding them is unimportant--all you have to do is oppose them. By any means necessary.
That's why political/philosophical/religious debates on social media almost always devolve quickly into name-calling and insults.
At which point it's no longer a matter of right or wrong, correct or incorrect, valid or invalid...
"Winning" an argument now means being so insufferably cruel and offensive that your opponent can no longer stand talking to you 😝
Point is, I barely grasp what you're saying...but I'm not going to pretend to agree with you to look smart, mount some babbling opposition that will only highlight my idiocy...
...OR just say "fuck it" and start pelting you with hate speech and vicious obscenities.
You're clearly an intelligent, thoughtful person--and my ignorance is no excuse to disrespect you.
Amazing how he came back to life from dying in 2008 just to comment on the 2016 election. Real dedication right there.

@Diverse TV yes - nearly as old as George Carlin might be right now. He'd be my oldest brother's age.
these days, we pretty much have to draw cartoon pictures for people to see the solutions...It would have been nice if he was able to incorporate that into his humor

GEORGE COULD HAVE JOKED ABOUT THAT THEN GIVEN A LITTLE BIT OF ADVICE ON THE SIDE -use a local credit union or a local bank that's not traded on the stock market... Account holders own the bank.
Now I want you to think - if George Carlin was able to make statements back then, to guide you out of this Doom he was predicting.. imagine the impact he could have had?

Groups don't form individuals. You can't be an individual if all you know is following your herd.
Why do you think girls in groups look the same? It's a natural instinct to want to belong to groups formed by people that look and act like you, but then again you should wonder if that's a good thing.
I still want to join new groups. From time to time i would join a group and hang out or whatever, but after a while i would get bored, because the people in them are all the same. Dress the same, listen to the same music, talk the same etc.

Jay Torraso he's actually said many times that he doesn't hate people, he just hates competition and honestly thinks that we're soon to die out naturally. He's actually very reasonable to think this in the long term, but he hasn't seen that the younger generations are packed full of people wanting to "fix the freaks".
Frédéric Acord - hate is a strong word. I said: disappointment. And I agree w him. Since I was 14, I would look around and wonder when are people gonna evolve? my mother would always try to the change the subject...I guess she knew the answer. I'm 46 now...and I have only witnessed a DE-evolving occurring with mankind, so I bury my head in creative things and the world of physics. Not living in denial. I just can't look at the horrific car accident that man has become. It's sounds depressing, but just keeping it real
nick nam - yeah, he would have been a good partner for Trump.... everyone needs a good friend to bury them in the backyard... haha:)

'It's not gonna get better, not in my lifetime'
I'm convinced neither in mine George, neither in mine and I'm 19
The Genetik yes it can
I’m under the belief as long as humans are on this earth it will always be a shit show. So I enjoy the highs for what they are and laugh during the lows. Can’t be disappointed that way and if things somehow get better by all means I’ll welcome it but until then I’ll enjoy the ride.
I want to tell you that,..."sure, it can be fixed",..but, I can't. I don't know what's gonna happen. I've been on the earth much longer than you and granted,...there have been some scary times -- but,...right now,...this is different. I would take Georges advice -- don't care about the outcome. Live your life. Do the best you can at the things you love to do. Be as kind and as nice as you can to other people,...because in the end, all of us want the same things out of life.
@Matthew Vides the internets only made everything he's saying worse. It's interesting to see people knew back then. What he would have made of it I wonder?
it might / who knows what could happen / especially if people come together and want it
When I first watched George I never laughed because I was too mesmerized by the truth.
Yes
YEEEEES
He literally gave me a new outlook on life
medschool2626 I feel bad for you.
medschool2626 if that’s your experience, I’m sorry. There are places you can get help for these issues of which you suffer. George Carlin’s experience was different. He was happy, caring, and deeply passionate about the world, his comedy, and his family. You need to grow a sense of humor and stop being moronic. I’m sorry for the ignorance and pain you feel, my poor sweet, dumb child.
Thank you George for being you. I always appreciated your mind and comedy.
This is more relevant than ever! Thank you Mr Carlin!
"Wouldn't it be funny if someone related my words to a future election that I wouldn't be alive for?" -George Carlin 2019
Bring it on I want to see the circus.
So what your saying is that statements made in the past are never applicable to future or even past situations?
@@TheEvolver311 He didn't make them for that Election, you're taking his words out of context if you do, which in my opinion is very disrepectful to anyone, let alone him.
@@loganjackson637 so yes you are saying that no statement can ever be used outside of the specific context and time in which it was uttered?
Pretty sure pseudepigrapha is actually more disrespectful than than finding applicable utility in someones past statements to reflect on current events.
TheEvolver311 I’m not saying applying and using words to guide your decisions is wrong, I’m saying that the title saying it’s strictly advice on the 2016 election is taking it out of context and constricting the advice to only that election. It’s misleading and untrue. Also it was a joke about him not being alive to have advice on the 2016 election, hence why I made up a quote of him from 2019. Wasn’t making huge political statements. Chill out and take his advice.
"when they begin to group, when they begin to clot...they change..." lol Isn't THAT the truth? And it's not often for the better.
To the 32 people who gave this a thumbs up, it's great that you like the comment, but are you doing anything about it? How many of you proudly call yourselves a Democrat or a Republican? Or wear your patriotism on your sleeve? Or identify so closely with one denomination of a religion that it's the first thing that comes out of your mouth at parties? All these great comedians who have taken on the role of philosopher because no one else will--George Carlin, Bill Hicks, Doug Stanhope--don't say these things just to be funny or seem edgy; they say them because there's some truth in it. Carlin was big on individualism and expression, and both get smothered and die when you give them up in order to be part of something bigger. Take these words to heart. Digest them. Look at your own life when you run those words through your head. Don't just applaud and then walk away.
"How many of you proudly call yourselves a Democrat or a Republican? Or wear your patriotism on your sleeve?" Maby not a single person from that group is from us.
Flag Coco Yea I'm doing something about it. I'm staying the hell away from large groups of stupid people. It works wonders to your health.
he uses the example of police officers in his autobiography - cops personally, individually, they always seem like the greatest people, but once you throw 10 of them into a room with a black guy they'll lose their shit and start stomping him to death.
I think it's why we love team sports. Sometimes a group of athletes comes together and they all perform in harmony and toward a common goal.
I think the way he thought about life is very liberating in the sense that you don't have to sort of fight with yourself and reassure yourself that everything will be fine. I think a lot of us have a vision for the future that we hope for and when something that we have no control over endangers that vision we try to find some way to rationalize it and make it fit into the story we hope to play out. When you let go of those thoughts, internal struggles and emotions you start to see life for what it is and not for what you hope it to be.
You can’t possibly be American, too wise for your age (going by the picture).
George knows we never die, energy never dies, life goes on
When he's on stage he's a "comedian" but in reality he is just a philosopher.

as a bartender at LAX in the 80's, I had the pleasure of mr. carlin quite a few times, a true human !
Russ Cobleigh nice
Geez you are so lucky!
I envy you, sir.
...And...?
He lived close to the airport ... he was out in the public!
I got to see you this man live twice and I'll honestly never forget those nights. We didn't deserve him but I'm glad we got him.
I suspect that Carlin's cynicism is the cry of an idealist who's given up. Given the politics he's lived through, it's difficult to blame him.
I don’t think he ever truly gave up.
dil oreo If he did, he wouldn’t have continued to make political comedy.
There's a difference between taking a cynical approach to life as a comedic strategy and being a cynical "wise guy"
@dil oreo there's no hope for humanity!!!! That's a lie!!!!! Carlin lied!!!!!! Jesus Christ was the hope for humanity!!!!!!!
And what about mother Teresa she had an interest in helping the poor!!!!!!!! For good causes!!!!! Carlin suffers from very very low self esteem!!!!!!!!
"I love people as I meet them one by one.....but as soon as they form groups, they begin to change....".....Carlin was such a brilliant master of separating himself from the world and observing it as an outsider.....he told the truth, knowing that lots of people would be offended.....
his comedic voice ascended to a much higher level once he decided he didn't care!
And why was he able to do this ? He didn't need to belong to any groups. He thought for himself. Ive always said, Ive never met anyone as interesting to me as I am to myself.
Yep
Not really, go read some of his man hating stuff. he was entirely trapped in the world of his father abusing his mother. He never was able to see past it and applied his personal experience to all men, while conveniently excluding himself. He was a hypocrite.
@@based9930 he was right though we are circling the drain... Facts no longer matter all the human education and understanding has given way to feelings. The level of stupidity America has sunk to is amazing.
No....people didn't get offended back in 1996 and before. Now they look for a reason to be offended.
I truly admire how he described his process in taking people over the line and then making them glad they went. What an amazing approach.
This conversation took place in the '90's......but the sentiment still stands today.

Weather forecast for tonight: dark.
-George Carlin
Continuing mostly dark tonight, turning to widely scattered light in the morning, man!
Let's take a look at the weather map... There it is, man!
This weather forecast was brought to you by Parsons pest control. Do you have termites, waterbugs, and roaches? Well Parsons pest control will get rid of the termites and waterbugs then help you smoke the roaches.
This is Al Sleet, your hippie dippie weatherman
I'm just glad that he was around in my lifetime for me and my friends to enjoy, nobody could make you laugh at the absurdity of ourselves like he could. We didn't always want to hear it, but he certainly always nailed us!
No matter how many times i see clips of this man he never ceased to hit the nail on the head people seem too afraid to speak their minds the way George did at least he got to speak his mind while he could thanks George 🙏
Imagine if we still had George Carlin, Carl Sagan, and Christopher Hitchens with us today? Fun on the Sun without religion!!

@Blow Me well Well, it's gonna be waiting a long while. Happiness for one whole day in my insipid life would be like a hard-on for a ninety year old ... ain't gonna happen.
That's funny, because I've been saying that for years. I've told people, that's why there are earthquakes. It's the planet trying to shake us off of it.

Great stuff. Probably some of the best things ive ever heard. What most people wont hear is that george carlin is inspirational. Sorry, but if you want to be like somebody, even your hero, you don't matter as much as the people who want to be totally unique. When george carlin talks about his choice to be a spectator (walking it back by the way with that beautiful quote about seeing the universe in the individual's eyes) he nudges me to be anything but a spectator.
Is wish there were more comedians like this. These days we have bad comedians like Amy Shumer who have an obvious political bias and think just saying "pussy" is funny.

Dave Chappel is a pretty smart guy too. Yeah Bill Maher also.
Joseph G Fucking Louis CK..
There's currently many brilliant comedians. I like Shumer, and Maher, Rock and CK are among the best.

hi
there's not a thing I wouldn't do to go back and see George Carlin do a show he was hands down my very favorite comedian off all time.
Rastko Bojkovic I've never heard of a man cutting of his dick I've heard of man cutting OFF is dick and the answer to question is yes I would let a fucking Rottweiler chew off my dick if that would give me a chance to see the great George Carlin same goes for Layne Staley from Alice in chains I would take a blow torch to my penis if that meant I could see Alice in chains some time in 91.
Ryan Beasley You'd prefer to see AIC before the Dirt album? Respectfully agree to disagree man but Carlin and Staley... two incredibly talented human beings.
BlackDogsMatter George carlin and layne staley are my two biggest idols...
BlackDogsMatter Facelift was as good, if not better, than Dirt IMHO.
Awesome note on your intentions. This definitely speaks to the cyclical nature of our existence. Thanks. Be Well and Good Journey Richie
This man made me take a new perspective and look at things differently. He inspired me to not just think my way or beliefs were right but to take the other person’s point of view and take that into consideration. Boy how I wish he was still with us now!
It's not going to get better, not in my lifetime. Boy was he right.
That interestingly is always the case, but if we don't do anything, it won't get better in our children's lifetimes either.
From 1988 to 2006 I saw George Carlin 6 times in concert. I learn more from this man than all the years in school. One of the best things that ever happened in my life.
This man was a treasure. May his words never be retroactively cancelled.
True free speech i watch carlin i dont agree with everything he says but he has a right to his opinions
"It's a big club, and you ain't in it." - If only he had lived long enough to see this world now. Absolute genius.
“The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who stand by and do nothing” - Albert Einstein
Thats pretty stupid
@Shockheadd45 :)
Nah, it is stupid. Only because BOTH are bad. And I put more responsibility on those who do evil. So do most civil societies by the way... that’s why we prosecute criminals, not bystanders. Also, Einstein was a great scientist but not such a good human being. He estranged his sons, cast out his mentally-challenged daughter, fooled around with plenty of women, including the daughter of his second wife. So all I’m saying is, maybe he’s not the best person to talk. This quote has also been used by anti-Semites to attack Jews by saying that Nazis aren’t as dangerous as the poor, marasmus prisoners in concentration camps who didn’t do more to stop them. That’s an insane argument, I hope you agree. Do you see the fault in the quote? Both evil and apathy are bad.
@Simeon Lindsay That's ultimately where a lot of the world's problems come from - immaturity. People who can never grow up, who can never own up to their own faults and issues.
"Fuck Einstein " that's what they said in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but in a polite maner of course.
