Ultimately - ended up springing for the Epix for the better build and screen. With five kids - I've scratched up gorilla glass more times than I can count. As always - great video.
I have the 965 and I’ve been using a flexible TPU screen protector. The fit is just about perfect and it conforms to the bevel of the glass nicely. I can’t even tell there’s a screen protector installed.
Thanks for doing this. I appreciate the close-ups as well as your first impressions. I wonder if the inclusion of a more traditional band is a throwback to concerns with earlier Forerunner models (310, I think) which triathletes somewhat routinely lost during the swim phase. Also, the choice of Gorilla Glass may be based on the idea that, unlike the Fenix for example, this is characterized as a triathletes’ watch and that Gorilla Glass should suffice for that type of use (i.e., not rock climbing or working on cars and so on). I switched to the Fenix series several generations ago (currently wear the Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar), which I routinely clunk into things and yet have zero scratches. The titanium bezel on the 965 is a nice improvement. People tend to overlook that the Fenix series also uses a composite case, just with metal bezels and back plates, but, as you mentioned, that bit of premium materials does contribute to satisfaction that you have purchases a quality device.
I've been wearing my fr965 for a week, and love it. The battery is fantastic, especially considering I use it every day for multiple activities. Still have 21% left after a week. I was a little miffed at the 6 data fields initially as well. But considering you can go into the app and create multiple data screens of 6 fields each, having 12 data fields at the flick of my finger is more than enough. I did put a protective screen on my Gorilla Glass, and I'm glad I did. I took a hard hit on the corner of something and cracked that cover film straight through. I can't imagine what it would have done to the Gorilla Glass. Overall, very impressed with this watch.
@James Kitchen I wouldn't say that it fits well. The glass sits above the bezel, so it's fairly prominent, and I'm already on my second protector. I need to do some more searching to see if I can find one of the rubbery ones to put on because the glass protectors are just too easily broken. That said, no air bubbles or anything like that.
Thanks for the video. Couldn't wait and went for the fenix 7x. No regrets though. Always on display and the metal finish make a difference for my use case.

Presently running with a Garmin 245m. The only thing I dislike on it is the display. Contrast is terrible. That new AMOLED display ooh baby. So lovely. But not enough for me to upgrade at this time. Aside from the odd band on the 965 I see Garmin is staying with their woefully short charging cable again. Thanks for the unboxing
Ive got a 965 and it will be with me during an upcoming 50k. So far the battery has held up no issues on 20 milers. I think my last one it was > 70% with default screen/power settings.
I went with another apple watch because I couldn't justify the Epix price and the display on the 955 was a turnoff. This is really making me have watch envy.
I came here to see if I got a fake watch. Cause the package wasn’t sealed or covered in plastic. Just like in this video. For a $500 watch!!!!! Amazon.
Just got one, coming from 945 lte. Super confortable, screen is very readable outdoors. Only complaint is that the activation of the screen by moving the arm doesn’t work 100%. Hope they fix it soon.
I have been using a garmin forerunner 55 for the last 16 months which was my first GPS watch. I love it, have had zero issues but im ready for the upgrade. I ordered the 965 today. Will see when it actually arrives since everything is labeled as a pre order. But im definitly looking forwaed to wearing it. It may take a few runs to get used to its size and weight on my skinny wrists.
I am sure that it is a great watch and it looks nice too. For me personally I will only ever buy a watch with a Sapphire lens though. I have tried the Gorilla glass on Garmin watches before and they just scratch too easily. Yes, maybe I am a little OCD in that regards but I just do not like the lens to be scratched within the first month or two and while I am aware that you can buy all sorts of aftermarket protectors for the lens and the bezel I will much rather get a watch with a Sapphire lens and not have to worry.
Hi Dave, Nice video as always 😊 I was deciding between 965 and 265 and eventually got the 265 for a couple of reasons, like a lower weight, my wrist being quite thin and also an honest discussion with myself that I really don't need a titan bezel and maps😄 . And I am very happy with the 265, especially with the amoled display and the much lower weight compared to my previous Fenix 7s. But I still think that 965 is an amazing looking watch.
i also just purchased the garmin 265 and I'm having issues with my bluetooth headphones not staying connected and not staying synched to phone. Are you having any issues with yours?
I just ordered mine after seen a few reviews on it. It looks awesome! I am using 945 at the moment, previously 645 235 and 45s. What can i say, I love the forerunner series!😅 I ordered for the better map mainly because I get lost sometimes during my running 😂.
Have FR 965 already. LOVE it although at the same time got a bug for some other watches and changing between them: Epix-Fr965 - COROS pace2. I guess you will do a comparison soon: FR965 vs Apex2 pro would be great.
Seems like a great watch... And the AMOLED displays looks adequate to the more sporty and modern style of it. While I still prefer the MIP for a "Fenix" style watch - meaning I like the Fenix 7 more than the epoxy gen2 - this one is actually really attractive.........
Good video. I already got one. But I had to send it back, because of sound and vibration issues. Garmin send me new now and everything works perfect. I have sugestion for U, to make a video wich protectiv glass to buy. Because of rounded edges it's hard to find wich to buy.
Nice video! I believe the reason for not shipping Forerunners with quickfit bands is weight, the metal on the quickfit system adds a couple of grams and these watches should be all about being as light as possible. Personally I'm not happy they increased the size of the watch, the 955 was big enough already and a 1,3 inch screen works fine as well. Next to the 955 it does look bigger I think. Of course it being thinner helps, but they could have still done that.
I ditched the AWU for the epix, best decision ever! I’ve never used garmin before and I have to say is way better! Unless you want to reply notifications (which I don’t see the point on a watch). Garmin not only records training and wellness data but also helps you understand it and integrate it to you day/life
This new thing of etching symbols or words into the physical buttons is my only issue with these watches. I still run in the FR645 because it easily passes off as ‘normal watch’, and so I am comfortable wearing it all day everyday. I’d never go to a cocktail event in these x65’s.
Dave doesn't have much sense in the watch having a titanium bezel and not having a sapphire crystal, this being the most exposed part. Thank you and a hug from Portugal (the California of Europaz🙂)
Sapphire does add a bit of cloudiness to the display because it's more reflective but... it's WAY more durable. Time will tell how this curved glass screen holds up.
Thanks, i used a 945 lte for an ultra yesterday. I had it in ultra track mode since i was concerned about the battery life and didn't think i could manage to have an external charger going in the rain. Ultra track was about 2 miles off. Will be interested to hear your thoughts, from an ultra point of view
It changes frequently since that's kinda my job at this point lol. I was wearing the Instinct 2X for the past month but I'll be dailying the 965 moving forward for a longer term review. The Epix is still one of my fav's though!
Thank you for a great review. I just bought FR 965, and I am loving this watch, switching from apple is a bit challenging but it only takes 2-3 days to get used to. I have questions, I selected a course, for riding bike unfortunately a part of the course /trail was under repair and they had put up detour sign, I am not sure what happened, may be a missed a signed but I was kind a lost, options available on Garmin was ‘ back to start’. Are there is any other workaround like detour back to course? Or any other ideas? Thanks in advance
Hope I will eventually get mine. Odered it 2 months ago (Germany) and the expected delivery date got updated back to 3-5 weeks yesterday - for the third time now :cx *update*: speak of the devil- apparently today my package has been sent out.
While I do love the Amoled upgrade, I am still hesitant to get this watch because of the significant decrease in battery life compared to the 955. In fact, I notice that many reviewers seem to just brush over this issue. 31 GPS hours may be good enough for a 100k ultra marathon, it won’t suffice for a 100 mile race. Hope to hear your thoughts on this matter. Thx for the video!
@@macau.friend you dont spend some time in aid stations? I did a 4 minute prayer and my watch went from 68% to 96% . Ive never done 100mile ultras so i wouldnt know, Which garmin watch would you recommend for 100 mile ultras ? I dont care about the features, just battery life
I still find the black circle around the screen way too thick, really prefer bigger titanum bezel instead of black line. Garmin thinks that amoled display will hide it but not.
Such an exciting time for bike computers and climbers. I think we all should thank Hammerhead for pushing the competition and showing that there is a market for free ride climb information. Wahoo are also about to release their updated Summit features with the addition of being able to see future elevation on the screen and add data fields from the Summit feature in other data screens.
Thanks for liking this, and I do like your videos. However, I intended to post this is another UA-cam video - hence, my comment had nothing to do with the 965.
I pre-ordered one from playbetter using your affiliate code but Garmin kept pushing the delivery date back... Had to cancel and ended up getting one from a local running store.
For MOUNTAIN BIKING-best watch for accurate physio(heart rate, training level, readiness, sleep, O2, etc.) GPS accuracy, etc.? I am NOT a runner. Thank you!
I use a TPU screen protector and it works well so far. I can't even tell it's on there and is very clear. Yes, you won't be able to use a Tempered glass screen protector. But I don't think that really matters.
As I own an Epix 2 I have no real interest in this watch but I gotta admit it looks cool. The menu's looks much nicer imo than on fenix/epix. The big drawback is that it has no sapphire screen, like why?
Garmin tends to reserve the Sapphire option to the Fenix/Epix line mainly because those are considered "outdoor/adventure watches". Gorilla Glass also has a slight advantage in terms of visibility since it's less reflective and doesn't create a haze/fog like sapphire. Though it is a minor thing, a lot of people prefer GG for this reason. Personally? I'd take Sapphire in a heart beat if it were offered on a 965!
Sometimes my Garmin has not recorded an HRV. Yesterday for example, my watch recorded my sleep, but didn't get any hrv data for some unknown to me reason... Now my watch says HRV baseline interrupted. Does this fully reset my HRV? I work nights, and sometimes the watch struggles to see my sleep at all... Any advice? Really looking forward to HRV baseline since I think it will help so many other categories... ps. Used your link and bought from PlayBetter. Purchasing was good, got a nice cts sticker.
I have the watch since a few days and there are two things that make me want to send it back: - the accuracy of the heart rate sensor is way off - with Airplane mode on coming back from a run my activity is ready to be viewed in Garmin Connect I am curious if this happens to others as well
They're pretty similar. The Epix has a sapphire lens which makes the display look a little foggy and reflective but it's much more durable. The actual AMOLED seems similar in terms of brightness and resolution.
I have the 965, and have a navigation question. I was running on trails in a state park and stopped by the spring to get a drink. Is there a way to mark that on the map or some how to mark it so I know how far I am away from that particular water location when I'm in other areas of the park? thanks
@@ChaseTheSummit I'm usually the local Garmin expert but having trouble finding it So if I'm in run mode and hit stop, what are the exact steps to get to the place to hit SAVE Location? Thanks again
Hi there! I also have a Garmin 245 and I’m thinking of changing for this 965. But I have a question that I think you can help: wile on hiking ou trail running can I see de elevation gain? When I start the watch can I see the elevation gain from zero on the screen? Or just in the final os the track when I connect to my phone? Thank you very much.
FR 935 3y old ...display always on....battery last about 15 days with 4 running training a week about 1,5 h each at least...3.5 h marathon battery drains about 15%...this is my real use !
08:52 FR965 uses the same CPU as FR955. We will see in the future if Garmin provides new features for 965 and not for 955 even with this fact. I hope that they won't do this as these watches are not even a year apart.
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks … as in the old days Garmin distinguished between Asian version from the rest … my Fenix 6 Pro simply can’t display any Chinese characters as it was purchased from US
It's a matter of preference. The AMOLED is nice but the MIP display on the Fenix has advantages as well. It's less distracting, has longer battery life in some situations, and is a true "always on" experience. Depends on what you're looking for!
@@ChaseTheSummit hi Dave. I got the 965 and tested it out for a week. I realize you can’t dismiss notification easily in the list of notification by swiping left like i could on fenix 7s. Wonder if you experience the same thing or was it just a bug. 😄

Odered it 2 months ago (Germany) and the expected delivery date got updated back to 3-5 weeks yesterday - for the third time now :cx
*update*: speak of the devil- apparently today my package has been sent out.
Nothing worse !

is it better to buy 2x instinct or the forerunner 965?
While I do love the Amoled upgrade, I am still hesitant to get this watch because of the significant decrease in battery life compared to the 955. In fact, I notice that many reviewers seem to just brush over this issue. 31 GPS hours may be good enough for a 100k ultra marathon, it won’t suffice for a 100 mile race. Hope to hear your thoughts on this matter. Thx for the video!
It takes you 31 hours to finish 100 mi race?
@@rxonmymind8362 Don’t know about you, but I’d be lucky to finish the UTMB race before the cut off time of 46 hours
They charge pretty dang fast 😂
@@bikerdude6119 I am sure they do, but there isn’t really much time to charge your watch during a race.
@@macau.friend you dont spend some time in aid stations? I did a 4 minute prayer and my watch went from 68% to 96% . Ive never done 100mile ultras so i wouldnt know,
Which garmin watch would you recommend for 100 mile ultras ?
I dont care about the features, just battery life
Now the Epix is in a difficult position. That 1.4-inch screen on the 965 is tempting, but I would much rather have an Epix 2X.
Love my 965!
Question-how do you buff out scratches right underneath the titanium bezel? Is that a plastic material?
Definitely
The case is made of plastic. The only metal is the bezel and buttons.
@@NeilLavitt lol I was wondering what bike computers had to do with the 965! Thanks for stopping by anyways!
Not available in Germany for another 3-5 weeks. 😢
Just arrived 🎉
I really want this watch, but I am not sure about the size. I usually wear 42mm watches, at best 45mm. However, 47 is kind of too much for me...
I pre-ordered one from playbetter using your affiliate code but Garmin kept pushing the delivery date back... Had to cancel and ended up getting one from a local running store.
Think you got a used/return?
The retainer not in a bag, the sticker on squint....
great job!!
For MOUNTAIN BIKING-best watch for accurate physio(heart rate, training level, readiness, sleep, O2, etc.) GPS accuracy, etc.? I am NOT a runner. Thank you!
Is it true you can't even use a decent screen protector because it's the shape of the glass?
I use a TPU screen protector and it works well so far. I can't even tell it's on there and is very clear. Yes, you won't be able to use a Tempered glass screen protector. But I don't think that really matters.
Seconding the TPU recommendation. They’re a bit painful to install but once on there well, almost unnoticeable.
Test the battery please :) Maybe you could do test to get max hours from this watch? Like very long workout. Thanks!
Hey! How much of an upgrade is this watch from the Venu 2 Plus?
I have the watch since a few days and there are two things that make me want to send it back:
- the accuracy of the heart rate sensor is way off
- with Airplane mode on coming back from a run my activity is ready to be viewed in Garmin Connect
I am curious if this happens to others as well
Do you see the difference between the AMOLED Screens of the Epic II and the FR 965; in terms of brightness, clarity and contrast?
They're pretty similar. The Epix has a sapphire lens which makes the display look a little foggy and reflective but it's much more durable. The actual AMOLED seems similar in terms of brightness and resolution.
Nice watch but only SAPPHIRE is foe me, therefore I wear Epix2 Sapphire!! 47grams with Enduro style strap from Ali Express....only Sapphire
Does the box come in sealed plastic?
I have the 965, and have a navigation question. I was running on trails in a state park and stopped by the spring to get a drink. Is there a way to mark that on the map or some how to mark it so I know how far I am away from that particular water location when I'm in other areas of the park? thanks
Yep, in the navigation settings click “save location” and it will be stored as a waypoint you can naivgate back to.
@@ChaseTheSummit I'm usually the local Garmin expert but having trouble finding it So if I'm in run mode and hit stop, what are the exact steps to get to the place to hit SAVE Location? Thanks again
Getting it today
Would you get the new 265 or the 955 ? (Both are at 480€) I honestly do not know what to do😅
Knowing Garmin for sure the sapphire version will come out within 4 months..🙂
I don't think Forerunners will get a sapphire screen. It's a way to sell more expensive Fenix models.
965 for $599 or the 955 for $399. Is the 200 difference worth it? Thanks
That's a great price for 955.
in my opinion no
Can you turn the digits white as I can't stand these poshy colours?
Can you switch off second-display?
There's lot of watch faces to choose from this is just the default one that's pre-loaded when you take it out of the box.
@@ChaseTheSummit the questions are not personal😜 they should sound like CAN I...( do it )/IS IT POSSIBLE...
I’m waiting for it and they said it was going to be 3 to 4 weeks so I don’t know if that’s still true or not but looks like it’s worth the wait
Thank you very much.
yes you can add a elevation gain data screen to the hiking/trail running activity
can it answer mobile phone call?
Yes but it doesn't have a speaker or mic so you need to speak into your phone still.
Do you have to charge it immediately after receiving it or wait for the battery to drop to let's say 10 percent and then charge it?
With these new lithium batteries it doesn't really matter but I typically charge mine to 100% right off the bat.
iam waiting 2023 top 10 best fitness tracker watch list
I’m thinking about switching to a Garmin. Does the display stay on or do you have to press the side button to see it?
It can be set to always on
@ okay, thanks for responding. With that being said I’m definitely getting one now
Does any of the Garmin watches have 100% "always on display"? Im just want it to not to be black or dimmed
FR 935 3y old ...display always on....battery last about 15 days with 4 running training a week about 1,5 h each at least...3.5 h marathon battery drains about 15%...this is my real use !
All of the models with transflective displays are 100% always on, or any of the AMOLED displays have a setting to keep on 100%
Cheers Dave, not sure if I should buy the 965 or wait for the new Epix gen3 which the FCC compliance has been leaked for 🤔
08:52 FR965 uses the same CPU as FR955. We will see in the future if Garmin provides new features for 965 and not for 955 even with this fact. I hope that they won't do this as these watches are not even a year apart.
I think the user experience has more to do with the refresh rate of the screen. It just "feels" snappier than the 955.
@@ChaseTheSummit Yeah, I just wanted to point out that they have the same CPU, that’s all.
Does it has an auto rest timer function like when youre running and take a break? Enduro 2 has that function what about 965?
In the Ultra Run activity it does… yes.
Could you check whether it supports Asian language out of the box such as Chinese?
It does support asian languages.
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks … as in the old days Garmin distinguished between Asian version from the rest … my Fenix 6 Pro simply can’t display any Chinese characters as it was purchased from US
I have a fenix 7s but i am so tempted with the 965. Any advice? 😅
It's a matter of preference. The AMOLED is nice but the MIP display on the Fenix has advantages as well. It's less distracting, has longer battery life in some situations, and is a true "always on" experience. Depends on what you're looking for!
@@ChaseTheSummit totally agree. I think i need more hands to cater to more watches. 🫣 thanks for the advice!
@@ChaseTheSummit hi Dave. I got the 965 and tested it out for a week. I realize you can’t dismiss notification easily in the list of notification by swiping left like i could on fenix 7s. Wonder if you experience the same thing or was it just a bug. 😄
Hi Dave, love your reviews, as always! Having a Fenix 6s because it was the first with mapping, but I’m making myself crazy wanting the FR965 now 🤩 not sure the lady would be happy with that.
But, what I wanted to say, maybe the ‘garmin logo’ on the side button might be just the ‘Play’ button? FR265 has RUN, so it would make sense in a way 🤷🏻♂️
If I don't need a map, better choice is 965 or instinct 2x solar?
The 965 has a map... in fact it's probably the best map out of any garmin!
@@ChaseTheSummit If I need a map, your choice instinct 2x solar or 265?
great video again!. Anyone, any advice about putting the water bags in the Salomon vest? i find it very difficult, i bet there is a kinda trick out there.
