I just went for the 965 a few days ago over the Epix pro. Money wasn’t an issue. The reasons for my choice were weight/battery life. As a marathon runner I just felt that the weight and size of the unit was more ideal than the Epix pro. The battery life was an added bonus. I also signed up for the beta software and have the new features of the Epix pro. I got a matching titanium strap for when I'm not running and I just can't get over how good this watch is.
Any issues on the beta so far? Been thinking about jumping on but been hesitant as I have a few races in sep/oct, do you think the full release will be out by then?
If price is the deciding factor, you could still get the non pro Epix gen 2. Over here the 965 is 650 euro, while the cheapest Epix can be found for just under 700.
Indeed. I got my Epix 2 a month ago and I'm really happy with it. Especially with the latest beta firmware the software is basically the same. I did contemplate getting the 965 for it's larger screen but ultimately went for build quality rather than screen size.
I own an Epix gen 2 Sapphire (not Pro) and i just love it. Its an EDC watch, for sports and any non sports activity. I wear it 24/7. Its a little expensive, but its elegant, durable, and totally worth it. BTW great video. Thumbs up!
sapphire lens on 965 and it would be perfect, I've scratched mine a few weeks into owning it and my 5s fenix lasted 4 years with not even a hint of a mark on the glass.
Great video Dave as always. I’m a FR 965 guy myself. Don’t find that one true overwhelming feature that would make me go to Epix. Maybe a future version but not yet. Solid comparison video though. #trustthesummit haha
Just tried the 965 and returned it 3 days later. Build quality was the biggest deciding factor, slight Ui differences(watch faces), buttons on dial feel (tactile). The 965 does not feel rugged and is much more suited for runners, then hikers or ultra runners. I picked up the Epix Pro 47mm while on sale for $700.00. The addition of the flashlight, ecg functionality , newer sensor for heart rate and the more fluid UI experience is well worth the extra cost.

I have the Epix Pro 51 and love it. No regrets at all about choosing it over the 965. Weight doesn't bother me at all and battery life is amazing. I also have the AWU with cellular service which I wear on my left wrist while I wear the EP51 on my right. They complement each other very well and now I don't take my iPhone with me on any of my runs and other outdoor activities. I can still make/take phone calls and messages, play my Apple Music library and playlists, and use other general things with the AWU while getting all the activities data and metrics on the EP51. I also use the AWU with Stryd for another set of data. Super happy with this combo and not having to take the iPhone with me everywhere is a huge plus.
@@mikem4215 My wrist size is right around 170mm. I'm a small and slim guy and the watch chassis does cover the entire width of my wrist but it looks and feels fine. The brilliant large display and the battery life are worth the extra heft. I wear it 24x7 except for charging once every 10 days (I have it on always-on mode) and it doesn't bother me at all. It feels light for its size. It feels less dense than the AWU.
This is exactly the setup i’m considering. Do you ever tun to unfamiliar routes which the garmin can give you? That’s why in thinking to get the apple watch: music & phone on one wrist, and maps on the other. But for this scenario i’m not sure which one to actually log a workout on…
@@Seanonyoutube I have yet to use mapping on the Garmin as it's fairly new and I haven't ventured into unfamiliar areas. I'd feel more comfortable with the AWU at this point in time as I've had more time with it. Most of the time, I'm running in my neighborhood and through very familiar routes. You can still log the workouts on the background on either watch. That's no problem at all. I often check on other things on the AWU while it's logging a workout. That's the edge that the AWU has over the Garmin - multitasking and being able to switch quickly between different apps that are running concurrently.
@@alexkhan2000 yeah. But even on apple watch, I find switching a bit annoying. I’d rather simultaneously be a to keep a map and my running stats visible. I feel like I’ll end up being a dual watch runner haha. But at least it will eliminate the need to bring my clunky phone!
Hello friend. all OK? Between the Garmin Epix Pro 51mm, Tactix 7 Amoled and FR965, which one would you go for?? Don't you think the Tactix is too big?
Yesterday I was watching your presidential trail video and was wondering which of the epix and fr965 you prefer, and here you are today! Also I think the non-pro epix would be a more relevant comparison, but no big deal I guess.
I recently bought the 965 and I'm so happy with it. The pros and cons in mentioned in this video makes me even sure that this was a good choice. First off, the Epix Pro would be out of reach economically (as was the AW Ultra) but the advantages of getting more screen out of a lighter, smaller watch is key for me. I mainly use my Garmin for swimming (pool and open water) and the size and weight do matter more there than for running (or everyday use). Especially in the pool where I'm new to swimming with a watch (and tbh, I'd still rather not). The battery life is good enough for all of my endurance activities, I did a 17k swim one day and a 7+ hour hike the next and I was still at around 50 percent.
@@craigholden3547 Yes, it was a race called Wörthersee Swim in an absolutely beautiful alp lake in Austria a couple of weeks ago, very nice swim (also nice to win it 😎✌). But that was not even the most crazy race, the day before I participated in 1000 meter butterfly, that was something!
How do you find the open water gps accuracy of the 965? I have the AW Ultra and it's terrible in terms of gps reliability in open water. When it works it does work well but sometimes it just ruins my gps tracks and gives me like twice the distance that I swam. Also with the Watch OS10 Apple ruined the swimming data, both open water and pool swim give wrong data on Watch OS10.
@@CanInelli I haven't used AW in open water myself, but generally it seems to be very good at GPS accuracy, like when DC Rainmaker is testing open water swim the AW and Garmins are usually the best. So it's surprising to hear your problems. Do you swim freestyle or breaststroke? I think any watch will have trouble with breaststroke since the watch i submerged all the time. Anyway, as for my new Garmin 965 I have had very good results in open water so far. It seems very accurate. My previous watch was the Garmin FR 910XT and even though that model is old (from 2011!) it had very good GPS accuracy for freestyle, better than a lot of later models, it seems. But one thing it could not handle was butterfly in open water, the track got all messed up. But with the 965 even the butterfly got a more or less perfect track, so I'm very happy with it so far.
Should mention that the 965 can only have a maximum of 6 data fields per page despite the biggest high PPI 1.4” screen. Even the 1.2” (and 1.3”) OLED screens on the Epix/Marq series can have up to 8. Deal breaker imo, but idk if this has been (or will be) updated since the 965 came out.
You are correct and I agree that it’s a silly limitation given that the 965 has a bigger screen than the Epix in the same 47mm case… why garmin?! I would have included that but like I said this video would get WAY too long if I included every single difference. Thanks for watching.
Hello friend. all OK? Between the Garmin Epix Pro 51mm, Tactix 7 Amoled and FR965, which one would you go for?? Don't you think the Tactix is too big?
I went with the Forerunner 965. I personally like that it’s lighter, weighs less, larger display and of course the lower price. I think the HR sensor demonstrates the reason not to spend more money on premium materials on a Garmin Pro watch. Plus most people that are interested in capturing better data use a HR monitor chest strap that also links to your other equipment. The flashlight seems lame but maybe that’s just me. The forerunner has a flashlight mode if you need
Don't knock the flashlight until you try it lol. I thought it was silly when it was first announced and I find myself using it all the time. It's totally different than using the display of a watch as a "flashlight". The 965 is an awesome watch though!
Great comparison, thank you. Personally I am going to stick with my Forerunner 935 as it is all I need for now. I do like the newer models though and hopefully by the time my current watch breaks there will be something even more awesome on sale. If I had to choose now, it would be either the 965 or a Coros Pace.
I prefer Gorilla glass. BTW, way back, I had a VivoActive 3 Music with Gorilla glass and the "domed" glass. Never broke it or scratched it with heavy use. Thanks. @@ChaseTheSummit
Great video as usual Dave. I went for the 965 after having the Fenix 6 sapphire. The size and form is better for me......... Would love the flash light though.
Good Review! I think there is another deciding factor out there... Water sports! F965 doesn't come with these sports like surfing which Epix (Gen 2) models does.
If Garmin made the Forerunner 965 with sapphire glass it would definitely be worth considering but as they only do the Gorilla glass version I would never dream of buying it. I have already own one Garmin watch with Gorilla glass and even if I tend to look after my things fairly well it is simply impossible not to scratch the lens, and to me that is a very expensive eyesore that I think is more or less unacceptable at $600. On a side note I am not sure that the Epix Pro is Garmin's flagship when you compare it to e.g. the MARQ series but yes, absolutely one of the more expensive models.
Returned the 965 for the epix pro gen 2 47mm. The 965 just seemed a bit goofy to me as it looked like a computer on the wrist, it just looks too big even compared with the 47mm epix pro which has a more classic watch screen to bezel ratio
Man, great video! I have watched it ten times already and still can’t decide between the two. I even bought them both from Playbetter to test them in “real life.” I hope that I won’t keep them both! I’m not that rich! I feel I share your thoughts, though. I like the build quality of the Epix, but I prefer the form factor of the FR. I should ask Garmin to make a Frankenstein watch with these two! 😜 (Great work, Dave!)
@@ChaseTheSummit Awesome! Not that it matters, but in the end, I settled for the Epix. It's much more money, but the build quality represents a better investment. I know myself; I would go mental if I had a scratched watch. Plus, I would like this watch to last a few years; hence, let's go with the 51 mm tank. Thanks again for recommending Playbetter. They have been accommodating and understanding.
I wanted to buy 955 but then saw epic gen 2 on sale similar price... I have a big wrist but worried about the weight of the epix during run and when sleep
Need a watch deciding between the Epix gen 2 pro and the 965 as my first running watch since i have just been using my phone to track my runs. I like that silver bezel and the gold variant.
A 300/300+ bucks saving would be enough for me to ignore the Epix Pro and seriously consider a 965 when my trusted Fenix 6 Pro will die. Hopefully not soon, so I'd probably have to reconsider the differences between Epix Mega Ultra Pro at 1500 and 985/995 at 1000 ... 🤬🤬🤬
I tried both, but kept the EPIX Pro 47mm because the plastic 965 with cartoonish watch faces is (to me) completely unsuitable for daily wear! And without all-day wear, the latest Garmin features (body battery, sleep tracking, recovery, training status, etc) are useless. For running only, the 965 certainly is a great watch, but ... for running only ... the 955 beats the 965 (because it has all the same features and superior outdoor visibility). Overall then I do not see the 965 as wise purchase because it's neither daily wearable nor the best run-only Garmin.
Would go for the Epix, as I also do trail run and MTB I feel it will last me better… currently I am using the Fenix Sapphire 6 and an Apple Ultra … use trainingpeaks to keep consistency with the exercises
Have my FR965 since April and one stupid mtb crash scratched my screen and the titanium bezel too - however I think of it as a piece of equipment for outdoor activity, so as long as it keeps working, I´m fine. Still, I would support you in getting the saphire glass, it will forgive more abuse for sure.
Garmin can be well paid for high quality materials and sapphire glass. That's fine, and it's no different with regular watch manufacturers. Still, the price difference between the two watches is a bit too much.
It is a bit weird that the UI is not just the same? The more colorful / animated UI of the Forerunner could be an option on the Epix - looks better to me. Like the Apple Watches are all the same UI even though the Ultra has more features
I feel like Garmin are shooting them selves in the foot. Up until the finex 7, there were huge differences software wise. However, recently they have shrieked the differences significantly with the recent updates. I believe Garmin needs to unify the watches under one name where the main or difference are the Hardware and screen size. That’s just my opinion.
I’d be on board with that. Sometimes I wonder if they’d sell more units if they had more of an “Apple approach” with only a few models that all have the same software and only hardware/battery differences… but what do I know!
I brought the 965 when I got home and opened the box and put the watch on I was very disappointed it’s too lightweight so I returned it back to the shop and got the Epix pro 51mm
I am trying to understand why the Forerunner 965 has a fresher, more fancy, modern screen display than the Epix watch. Maybe, metaphorically speaking, since I own an Epix, I am mentally biased by the "grass looks greener on the other side", or maybe not, but one thing is for sure - I want a screen replica of the 965 on the next Garmin's flagship release.
I think it’s by design. The Epix is the “tactical, utility, adventure” type of watch so they skip the fancy animations and colors and stick to a basic display that gives you the information you need. The forerunner is a bit more recreational/fun in terms of marketing. They are nearly identical in terms of function though!
Nothing short of a brilliant video. Enjoyable relaxing informative. You’re really good at this UA-cam presentation. I’d love to start a channel but a bit shy:-)..
I have the opportunity to get a second-hand 965 for 350 VS epic pro gen 2 51mm for 700€… I like the aspect of 965 due to the smaller bezel, but I don’t know if the forerunner has the possibility to install other watch faces and kind of activities as I’m doing now on my Fenix 5.. I also fear that 51mm are too much but 1.4” display is beautiful
I really enjoyed your videos and yours is among my top 3 fitness-smartwatch UA-cam sites. But I do wish to provide some FYI which is solely meant to be my opinion and informative to you. You often do watch comparisons and, invariably, when you do, you often show the watches with toally different screen faces [like very different time faces or performance metric face] when each of the watches you are comparing have either the identical watch face or comparable ones. It makes it difficult to compare the display on the watches and to put what you are saying about the differences in context. Also when AOD displays first came out, one or more of the watches in your comparison would not have AOD on, or would time out to quickly. Then you would have to tap or keep flicking the watch which is distracting. I noticed that other reviewers simply put in the longest display timeout at least while video recording. For this video, when you discuss the size differences in F965 vs Epix 2 pro, you mention the body diameter diameter differences without mentioning that these two watches have the same screen size - usually the most important feature. Yes, I do know that towards the end of the video you do discuss this in body-to-screen ratio but this topic should be placed or integrated into the size discussion. Thanks. I do watch just about every one of your videos.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. In this video I do in-fact have both displays set to their maximum time-out which is 15 seconds. Unfortunately AMOLED display watches don't get longer timeouts like other models. I think I do mention the screen size thing a couple times in this video but again... I always recommend folks check out the dedicated in-depth reviews for models discussed in these "quick comparison" type videos. Thanks for tuning in.
Garmin Epix Pro Display has the best aspects of an indoor screen and outdoor screen in one. I’d just love some alternative material choices like a carbon fiber bezel or gold and black titanium. Or both.
Hi Dave, thank you for the video! its really cool. I don't know whether you already discuss this, but have you make watch comparison based on the offline map quality and feature? I've seen you discuss about this feature on each watch but cannot find the specific feature comparison (or i missed it). I need a suggestion for a watch with offline maps and compass feature that work well on a location without cellular network. Thanks!
I don’t use the 965 a whole lot for mapping. With that said, I have used the maps on the 965 for routing using a downloaded GPX route via Footpath app or Garmin connect app it works just fine with turn by turn direction
@@JordiRuns does the map orient so the arrow always stays pointing up, or does the map stay fixed meaning that the arrow sometimes points to the sides?
@@Seanonyoutube so I mainly run with the 965 and the arrow is typically pointing in the general direction I should be headed in and as you get closer to a turn, the UI presents an arrow with the turn direction and distance remaining to perform the indicated turn. All this is displayed in the standard data display window for running and it’s not necessary to be in the map display window. In the map window you get full mapping experience with the highlighted route you should take. It’s very useful and intuitive. Again, I don’t use mapping much since I run flat routes that I recognize or have ran in the past. Hope this answers your question
@@JordiRuns excellent thank you. I think I’ll invest in a 965 as I enjoy exploring new cities or trails or even new neighborhoods in my city by following routes and running to them and my apple watch doesn’t have this feature and footpath sucks on my apple watch so I guess I’ll be owning both haha.
I’d like to know what Corning is comparing the “scratch resistance” of their gorilla glass to? Because frankly, it’s a joke. The screen on my 965 seems to scratch if I look at it cross eyed, with it already having a couple of tiny scratches in just the couple of months I’ve had it. My COROS Apex Pro, with sapphire glass on the other hand, has seen 2+ years of hard daily use and doesn’t have a single scratch on it.
Coming to this video a couple months late but it’s a great comparison thank you. Quick question though how has the white epics held up? Specifically the sides where the buttons are but also the band?
My opinion has changed over the years. I think the 47mm Forerunner 965 is my favorite size/weight watch right now. The 51mm Epix Pro or similar is "doable" bit it's a big watch on my 165mm circumference wrist! Of course, this is just my opinion so take that with a grain of salt!
Hi, I'm particularly interested in the mapping aspect of the 2 watches: are there any differences at all in details displayed on the map at the same zooms?
Detail is basically the same. The only real difference is some of the functionality is different (as mentioned in this video) largely they're very similar though.
On the Epix Pro both the bezel and rear cover are titanium. It's specified on Garmin's website under "case materials" quoted here: "fiber-reinforced polymer body with titanium rear cover"

Weight is my decisive factor 🔥 FR965
This was super helpful. Thank you. I plan to upgrade to the 965 from a 935. Epix Pro 51mm is not worth almost twice the price IMO
I love my FR965. Very clear and easy to see screen display compared to 955! 😛 I do own both tho...
Out of curiosity why would you have both watches?
I can’t decide between 47mm and 51mm. What is your wrist size ? I am approx 175mm wrist so could go either way on the epix sizing
Hi Dave, Thanks!
I return my Fenix 7 pro. I have a Fenix 7. The pro doesn’t seem to be better in heart rate tracking then even Venu 2.
I've selected Forerunner 965, I have it for two months now and I am super happy bith battery, performance, and the general look of the watch.
Hello friend. all OK? Between the Garmin Epix Pro 51mm, Tactix 7 Amoled and FR965, which one would you go for?? Don't you think the Tactix is too big?
Great comparison video. To me the design language of the epix is a lot nicer than the 965.
Yesterday I was watching your presidential trail video and was wondering which of the epix and fr965 you prefer, and here you are today! Also I think the non-pro epix would be a more relevant comparison, but no big deal I guess.
I have a FR 965 and it´s just amazing! Practical, light and beautiful. I wouldn't change it for any other Garmin.
Excellent comparison!
You swam 17km in a day??
I love my epix 2 pro 51mm! It looks amazing!
Indeed!
@@ChaseTheSummit true, I had a zip up hoodie that had a small flashlight on the zipper. It was really nice and more useful than you might expect.
965 has better price, larger screen pixel resolution, less weight and really the weight is everything for a runner.
I am hiker and i still choose 965 its light ton of battery life, no problem with gps in mountains
Great comparison, thank you. Personally I am going to stick with my Forerunner 935 as it is all I need for now. I do like the newer models though and hopefully by the time my current watch breaks there will be something even more awesome on sale. If I had to choose now, it would be either the 965 or a Coros Pace.
Weight and cost it's enough to definetly prefer the 965!
Waiting for a 965 with a speaker 🔈 to text to talk and new HR sensor. Thanks again
Love when you' "compare Apples to Apples" between these two @5:30 :)
Hey love the channel and the podcast. Would love to hear for podcast about the Apple Watch ultra
The video we’ve been waiting for!!!
Awesome comparative as always. Thanks Dave, great analysis.
My biggest issues with the 965 are 1) no sapphire glass and 2) no surf activity. 5 ATM is plenty of water proofing for water sports
I have an Epix Pro, and I have recently moved to a 965. I prefer the form factor and weight, although I do miss the flashlight!
Same! I love that little flashlight. I hope they add it in the next revision!
My perfect watch: 965 w/cellular and wireless charging.
Add sapphire and we're golden!
I prefer Gorilla glass. BTW, way back, I had a VivoActive 3 Music with Gorilla glass and the "domed" glass. Never broke it or scratched it with heavy use. Thanks. @@ChaseTheSummit
Surfer, Paddleboarder and other water sports the Epix was the only way to go!
This was added via firmware to the 965!
Now the ECG feature brought by gen 5 heart rate sensor is making a little more difference.
Very good comparison video with points that matter.
Thank you for the good video. I like FR965, and I wish it would have sapphire lens material and new heart rate monitor.
Sapphire would have been awesome. It would have made the decision easy for me.
The MARQ series makes no sense as a digital smartwatch though
Returned the 965 for the epix pro gen 2 47mm.
The 965 just seemed a bit goofy to me as it looked like a computer on the wrist, it just looks too big even compared with the 47mm epix pro which has a more classic watch screen to bezel ratio
Hey Dave, if you had to keep only one, which one would you choose? Not only from those two.
(Great work, Dave!)
A FrankenGarmin! Thanks for tuning in and supporting the channel! Your hats will go out tomorrow bright and early 👍
Thanks for sharing.
Agreed, I had both and the 965 looks like a toy in comparison.
You saying the MIP is MORE visible than the OLED??
I will never understand why the IU between garmin devices have all these differences? Do the developers not talk?
It's very odd. I suspect they do some things to give slight advantages to the more expensive models but other things seem pointless.
Different product managers I guess 😅
Forerunner 965 for the WIN! Absolutely the best Garmin watch. Beautiful screen and graphics and you can wear it without noticing it.
Been waiting for this.
I've only just noticed that the Endurance Score and Hill Score glances came on the latest beta (16.12) for the FR955 too.
But was the map limitation fixed?
@@Seanonyoutube Do you mean for non Garmin maps? Yes, I believe they now work but they do cause the watch to misbehave.
@@nowster no i’m referring to the lack of ability to double tap to zoom in on a map which he points out in this vid

This video was awesome. Time to do fenix8
I brought the 965 when I got home and opened the box and put the watch on I was very disappointed it’s too lightweight so I returned it back to the shop and got the Epix pro 51mm
What on earth is wrong with you
Damn i wanted the 965 before watching this! You for sure changed my mind 😂
Epix ?
@karolinawozniak681 yes it's awesome 👌🏼
@@lowflyingpigeon7956 bought today epix 2 pro sapphire 42 mm 🥰
They are nearly identical in terms of function though!
just go for the Forerunner 965 you wont regret it if you do normal activities few times a week
Thanks for tuning in.
beta version 16.12 got endurance and hill score on fr 965
Garmin Epix Pro Display has the best aspects of an indoor screen and outdoor screen in one. I’d just love some alternative material choices like a carbon fiber bezel or gold and black titanium. Or both.
Put a case protector/ watch face protector on it, and scratches will Not happen.
Thanks!
I have both and I like both.
Is the map limitations mentioned annoying on the 965?
Never understand with garmin way of designing their running watch
Why pay a hefty price for a plastic watch??
I’m having a hard time upgrading my old forerunner 935. I want the amoled watch but end of the day they all do much of the same thing. So conflicted.
Coming to this video a couple months late but it’s a great comparison thank you. Quick question though how has the white epics held up? Specifically the sides where the buttons are but also the band?

I really don't like heavy watches, don't like it when I'm running or sleeping so Epix or Fenix Garmin aren't an option
The 965 is a nice balance of features/weight.
Does Garmin or Apple have a more accurate GPS and heart rate sensor?
Well done video.
Hello Dave! Do you still think FenixS is the best of the size options for everyday use? Or the Bigger size has grown on you?
My opinion has changed over the years. I think the 47mm Forerunner 965 is my favorite size/weight watch right now. The 51mm Epix Pro or similar is "doable" bit it's a big watch on my 165mm circumference wrist! Of course, this is just my opinion so take that with a grain of salt!
I still can't decide fuck
The Garmin 955 have both Hill Score and Endurance score
They do now! At the time of filming this video it was exclusive to the Epix/Fenix Pro and was added later via firmware to other watches.
Hi, I'm particularly interested in the mapping aspect of the 2 watches: are there any differences at all in details displayed on the map at the same zooms?
Detail is basically the same. The only real difference is some of the functionality is different (as mentioned in this video) largely they're very similar though.
Did Garmin add these navigation gestures for the 965?
3m:17s you say that the back plate is also titanium, but another reviewer claims that the back is stainless steel even if the bezel is titanium?
On the Epix Pro both the bezel and rear cover are titanium. It's specified on Garmin's website under "case materials" quoted here: "fiber-reinforced polymer body with titanium rear cover"
Went with the Fenix 7X Pro.
if you are interested in swimming i think epix/fenix is better becose of better waterproof rating, and better drainage holes than forerunner
For sure, though the 965 is also designed for swimming just not deep water diving beyond 10ATM!
@@ChaseTheSummit epix/fenix is rated 10atm, foreruner is 5atm. In my experience not a problem with fenix after swimming, pressing buttons and hot shower. Forerunner not so sure. First thing that will probably fail from lots of swimming is altmetar/barometar becouse is imersed in water, and fenix/epix have 3 draining holes, forerunner only one.
Many thanks for great video. How accurate HR readings in 965 compare epic pro 2? I have Fenix 6x pro solar and HR readings are very bad
