@@GTE_Channelyou can see what's in a week ahead, and even replace today's workout with something suggested later in a week (personally do it sometimes if I'm not in a mood for a tempo or a long training session).
I had a 10km race just a month after a half Marathon and couldnt find such a short training program so decided to go with Garmins DSWs instead. Had to replace some suggested intervall sessions with my own (the suggested ones can be a bit weird) but otherwise it worked well and I got a PB at the 10k!
I never ran in my life, no exercise for over 10 years. I just turned 42 and overweight. One day I just decided to get a Garmin and put 5K goal in 9 weeks. I couldn't run for 2 minutes in week 1 and 9 weeks later, I am running 5K this Sunday. (I am ~80% comfortable I can complete the run)
@@runningchannel Thanks for the reply. I am actually on a business trip, so I will have to finish my 5K on treadmill. I have no idea how Garmin will measure my 5K, but I will stick to the plan.
I just want to tell you that you did great and that you're not less of a runner because you had to walk. I also had to walk on my first 5k race. I was going way too fast, and on some days, runs feel harder than they usually do. The most important thing is that we listen to our body and don't overdo it. You did great!
I can't believe with all the amazing Races you've done, and the awesome places you've run, the negative, abusive, comments from people are what you remember? When I see you on the Running Channel, all I think about is ULTRA's, "ULTRA JAMES", the guy that never stops! Great comment. The human mind can be terrible for concentrating on the negative. This affects so many people including the some of the best sports-people in the world.

Except life isn’t a Disney movie- most people who make fun of others is because they’re superior to them in a common interest.Plenty of fast runners look down on and mock slower runners, you can see the same thing in different sports/hobbies/etc.
I can concur that running slower more often worked for me as I managed a pb on a 10k a couple of weekends ago. No Garmin, just watching The Running Channel. Thanks guys!
I recently completed my Garmin 5k 13-week plan (running 3 days a week)... my PR was 28.37 now it's 25.21, yes it's a huge improvement. After watching this video, now I'm going for 10k ;-).
I used Garmin's suggested workouts almost exclusively for my half marathon training (my first half ever) and I really loved it. It's great to wake up in the morning and check my watch to see what I'm going to run. Plus, since it knows half marathon training better than I do, it suggested sessions that I wouldn't have thought to do. A nice balance of structure with some wiggle room if you can't make a run day or you get sick, etc. Hope you get that PB James! I'm crossing my fingers for a sub-50. 😄
@@runningchannel 2:29:40! Was aiming for 2:20 but I hadn't trained enough with the energy gels beforehand and they didn't sit well in my stomach after mile 9, haha. Still happy to get under 2:30.
Hey James, love your energy and positivity in all of the videos from this channel. I can really relate with your message about running alone and at night, to avoid feeling self conscious. I've always had a thicker build and I've struggled with that mentality myself sometimes. I love that you're in a place where you can share that with others. You're a bright shining star on this channel. I hope you get some rest when the little one can stay asleep. Cheers mate! You're awesome!
People can be very mean but in the end you should not care what randoms are saying to you. Most important is you are doing something very good for yourself and every run you do is improvement. So face the fear and run in daylight sometimes 💪🏼 i'm rooting for you and remember there are more people like me outthere❤
Doing a lot of Zone 2 training plus some variety with threshold and intervals over the last 3 months (a lot suggested by my watch) is what got me to a sub 45min 10k pb and a sub 20min 5k pb 2 weeks ago. I always stick to the heart rate based training rather than pace
I’d highly recommend switching Daily Suggestions to heart rate rather than pace! I find it helps me go by effort and gives some grace when hills make it tough to stick to a prescribed pace while also keeping my effort easy
I had to abort the half marathon plan because of an injury and missed the race. I switched to the running suggestions between plans and it is a real nice experience. And now I am back in a training cycle for the half marathon.🎉
I tried heart rate and quickly realized that it isnt possible for me, i am used to higher heart rates due to a heart condition i had once so my bpm are about 10-20 higher at low intensity, on steep uphills at low pace up to 190 so bpm training isnt for me. (My heart condition i had once brought my pulse above 230 bpm, was in intensive care and had to stay in bed Plus 3 years of monitorisation afterwards with the frequency going down over time)
I am so sorry you experienced horrible people. Some people are not kind, compassionate or nice. The only thing you can do about horrible people is just not be one of them. I'm a huge believer that the world is full of kind people if you can't find one be one.
Yes! I love this. my Garmin suggested runs allowed me to run for an hour straight for the first time ever. I never before thought I could do it, but since my watch suggested it, I tried. :) I also love the kind of surprise aspect of it and not having to think about what I wanna do, then change my mind, decide not to do it, decide oh yes I do want to run, but do some other distance or time etc.
Don't focus on the negatives or crappy things people said, focus on what you are achieving. Yes for you personally, but also for others. I started running 5 weeks ago and ran my first official 5k race last week. No small part is seeing you put the time in and showing me that the path is there I just need to walk it (or run it as it may be). When thinking about what people yelled at you when you started, remember you have far more people who want to yell encouragements for you instead.
I started running 14 months ago in age 39. After one month of random runs, I purchased Garmin watch and used a workout plan to prepare to half marathon. It took 15 weeks and my result was 1:52 in my first official race. I must say, I was pretty satisfied with the training process, I was working hard, but without overtraining or injuries. The variety was also pretty good, not boring at all. After that I used suggested runs after I set the next half marathon race date. I think those were more various in terms of different types of workouts, but less systematic if you would say. However, there were also phases, like base phase, tapering before the actual race etc. Again, satisfying experience as well as the previously used "workout plan". My performance became better. I cannot choose which of those two options was better though. Both felt good enough and helped me progressing without injuries and overtraining.
I love the running channel for your inclusive message!! All types, all speeds, you are all runners and should be proud! I’m sure you motivate many people who feel the same as you did(do)! Love the content!
I started running at nights to avoid the stupid comments from people. Once I was really struggling. The run hurt. I was exhausted from the tough day at work. I did not sleep well. The weather was bad. The pace was super slow. Then a car with some youngsters passed by. And they yelled run little runner run. And I thought omg they think I am a runner :D and it made my day I was so happy.
I let Garmin coach me from 1st Jan this year, for my local (Cardiff) half marathon. Didn't go to plan - aiming for 2 and finished in 2:08 - but really enjoyed using it.
I followed my Garmin training plan to run my first half marathon (ended up being 25k). Really enjoyed it. My watch took the decision out of my hands. I just needed to put my shoes on and do what it said.
Used this feature and made my half marathon training based on Garmin daily suggestion. Scored my PB of an 1:41 in May. It worked so well for me that I used it for my full marathon training. It's on 15th October, fingers crossed :)
Really loving your content! I just started running a month ago for the first time ever and loving it. I enjoy how down to earth you all are and manage to make the content and running community so approachable for people like me!
@@runningchannelI started doing parkrun a couple weeks ago and signed up for a night time 7k trailrun with Maverick in December as something to look forward to. Thanks for asking:)
I followed the Garmin suggested workouts for the best part of a month earlier this year. Have a ~1 year old who doesn't sleep well, so stopped using it when Garmin started changing everything to base and recovery due to a poor sleep score. I'm sure it was telling me to do the right thing, but I was missing the tempo and threshold runs! Currently on the tail-end (I hope) of an injury so I intend to use it in the run up to Christmas, before I start my first marathon training block in January - just for a bit of easy structure.
Really great watching this! I love my garmin suggestions. Every now and then I switch the speed work in my plan with the garmin suggested speedwork. As for the idiots shouting abuse - so hard to ignore BUT, remember it’s you on two legs looking after your health. So well done you!
That’s a great way to do it, good thinking! And thank you for that lovely comment about the abusive people. The running community is so great we drown out those lone idiots 🙌🏻
I used my Garmin to train for my first half marathon in Cardiff at the weekend and managed a time of 1:48:23. I followed it to the letter and I’m amazed by the results!
Forget the negativity. Like David Goggins says, you’ll never hear smack talk from someone doing better than you. I guarantee that the people yelling haven’t run since high school.
I've been using the daily suggested workouts for 6 months now and have seen some steady improvements. Initially, as an older runner and "listening to internet advice", I forced myself to never run more than 3 days in a row, notwithstanding what my watch was suggesting. However, encouraged by a comment on reddit, I took the plunge about two months ago and just listened to my watch. I am now running 6 or 7 days a week, and never really feel overly tired. I have a 2 hr 19 minutes long run scheduled in two days. As for your PB: I commented on an earlier video when you mentioned your goal and stated that, based on what was shown as recommended pace for your base runs (and comparing with mine), I didn't think that a PB was in the cards for you; I think you will run 51:30, about one minute shy of your PB. I hope that I am wrong and wishes you the best of luck!
I’m like you. I’ve been afraid of running too much. I keep seeing people say that they have 5 and 6 days per week runs scheduled and are doing fine. Another gentleman has aid his watch had him run 27 days without a break. He said he was concerned after day 8 but kept it up and felt great. I’m almost comfortable with listening to the watch.
I got my 5k PB down from 28 mins to 24 mins with my own custom training. I've decided to do first half marathon in Feb, aiming for a 2hrs, and wanted more structure in terms of a training plan so actually started a Garmin 12-16 training plan. First week in and liking the runs so far and love that i dont have to think what to do each day!
I attested the effectiveness of the suggested workouts, it really improved my running!!! I returned last year to run after self-imposed pandemic break, since December 2022; I followed 90% all suggestions from my watch to run half marathon on July 2023, and I improved a lot; not with my best time ever but I felt great on the race. I took a break sometimes on easy runs and I do some cycling instead, but even in cycling the suggestions come handy and the watch suggested rides at a specific power and time. It is super effective if you put a goal race event and pace along with it, and using the watch to track down your sleep and your rest periods as well
‘Surprised about the abuse you got. Total respect to you for your resilience and perseverance. I’ll think of your +ve character on my next run! More power to you and the channel!
Thanks for this video James, it gives me more confidence in my running watch and why I should be wearing it. It will be nice to have everything in one place rather than across different devices. Thanks man :)
Mate, as a South African, I'm very familiar with the comrades marathon. My brother in law has run it and I've considered it so I know what's involved in even attempting it. The fact that you've not just started, but completed it should shut the nay-sayers and negatives up instantly. Massive kudos to you man!
Used the daily suggestions for training for a 3:10 marathon. It did work (basically nailed the time) but I felt the need to run even longer on the suggested long runs. But it's a super helpful and useful feature!
@@jannemanders9348 Thanks a lot. ☺️ I used a Forerunner 955 Solar. But in the end it will also work with a 255, 265, 945 LTE, 965, Fenix 7 und Epix. Not sure about older models.
Used the Coach feature to prepare for a 27k race. However, I found it more effective to train according to heart rate instead of the suggested pace during training. It's a bit of a change at first, but the results were much better after a few weeks.
I used Garmin coach for my first ever half. Then again to PR a 5k. Right now I'm just using the daily suggestions without a goal as I'm recovering from an injury. I love someone else keeping me balanced without me thinking about it.
You missed quite a few features of the race day widget and suggested training, for example you can select heart rate instead of pace which helps if you live in hilly areas, you can also see a week of workouts in advance and select one of those if you don't fancy the workout it's suggested
I wish they would push the race day widget down to earlier models. I have the Fenix 6s pro and I have myself set up for beta testing but the race day widget seems to be post Fenix 6. I would love to be able to use it but I’ll have to wait until someday when my Fenix dies. Unfortunately, it’s still awesome!
Inspired me to give this a go. Totally get you on doing runs when its was quiet ,i struggle with feeling self conscious especially as i carry a few excess pounds (egg on stilts srings in to mind) Good luck with the 10k🙂 and carry on making great content
That's a weird Garmin interface :) I'm training for my 10k sub-60 minutes, and I think I could do it already cardio-wise, but my weakest side is legs/knees, feeling pain after some of the trainings. Using Garmin coach for the 3rd week, got a final "race" in December. So far I really like that I don't have to think about my intervals and programme, even though I still have to think about the route, so I come back home on time before the first work meeting in the morning. Enjoy your running, Cheers.
I’m always struggling to reduce my pace for training and always jealous my training partner has her Garmin with her. I’m getting ready for a 42k in about six weeks so hopefully I can follow your example since my watch doesn’t have training functions like that. I’m sending strong thoughts towards Santa at this point :D. Good luck in the 10k James and keep ignoring dumb comments when you run! We used to get them even as half decent runners in the old days, some people just have nothing better to do with their time. One of my happiest things about the U.K. has been seeing from afar how many people are taking up running through park run and the myriad events that have sprung up over the years. This channel and your videos are really helping inspire loads of us to keep going with our own training. Keep being awesome! P.S. defo a PB for this 10k.
I could barely run a 9 min mile to start.. and I followed the 1/2 Marathon Garmin Training Plan going for a sub 2 hr, 9:10 avg pace. After following the plan from January to June I completed the 1/2 in 1 hr 48 min 8:15 per mile. Really worked for me. Most of my runs were running slower than I felt I could so going slower with volume pays off.
Good video. I'm in the 2/3 week of getting ready for 5k, using Garming Coach. Can't believe that I feel more comfortable running in every workout session. I'm expecting to run 5K on december 7 🤞 I never ran that much in my life, so, if I achieve this, I will cry, for sure :P hahaha.
I did a garmin plan earlier in the year while training for a half marathon. Mine wasn't as smart as this, it set a plan at the start of the week and didnt adjust at all in the middle of the week It was nice for it take thinking out of it, but i didnt like not being able to plan ahead like you can with a regular plan. I'm training for a marathon at the moment using a traditional plan and its nice to be able to say , "oh that weekend im doing 32k, so i cant organise anything for that day!"
It seems you use garmin training plan (the one you select) and not the Daily suggestion. Check that your watch is compatible and how to activate it. It's not perfect but definitely dynamic as it adapts to your training and overall state.
Pretty neat how the watch can adjust the plan according to the data it measures. I don’t like wearing my watch 24/7 so my watch probably wouldn’t ever have accurate enough data for me to do this. But I love all the options people have for getting training plans and help with training.
I know I’m late to this video but it would be very helpful to have a short video on how to actually set this up on a watch please (also which watches support it)
Im very sorry to newer runners, but those really short runs just seem crazy to me! If my run doesnt last longer than my stretching and shower, I'm not sure it's worth it XD. Maybe you will get a PB and prove me wrong, but I'm thinking your garmin is just giving you whatever it can think of.
I'm following all my garmin suggested workouts during winter season in prep for 2024 summer marathon season...I have the Berlin marathon set in my calendar and a few other smaller races in the calendar, but Berlin is my #1 race. I'm loving the workouts. I'm also really prioritizing recovery. No kids, so it's easier...In bed by 10: every night...Right now I'm killing it... I hope this energy holds out till till end of march when I move to the next phase. I follow my suggested workouts based on heart rate instead of pacing.
Do most of my base runs with my dog. In fact as soon as I open the closet to get shoes he knows what is happening and drives everyone in the house crazy if I dont take him 😂. I use the exact same harness and lead. Same colors too! 🐕🦺
I struggle with finding suitable plans and thought I’d give the garmin plans a go and loved the adaptability of it around your work/life. I followed a 12 week one for 10k and despite being having a cold during race week still managed 52:17 which was over a 5 min pb
i started training by my watch last year (after a year of not knowing how to train) and managed to get my time from 18:15 to 17:03 in a matter of months (i then got injured and haven’t beaten that PB yet, but we’re ignoring that) the training plans may not be elite level, but they do help a lot
I have used the widget for over a year. I set mine to hr zones for the pacing! For the base runs, its helped alot. My base pace has increased by a considerable amount (over 1min per KM).
@@runningchannel I did when younger, as well as playing rugby and orienteering etc. I’m sure if I needed to I could run a couple of hundred metres but I wouldn’t be able to walk the next day. 🤣 so it’s walking for now.
Well done :) Running with a dog is amazing. I don't understand people who shout at someone who is out of shape running. Such body shaming is disgusting behaviour. I wonder if that person would scream if you went to the hospital for an operation? It is the same thing, you are trying to get better and if anything they should be encouraging that person not discouraging it.
I run with my dog all the time. He's a 12lb Coton de Tulear, 2,5 yrs old. Started last year with 1hr 10km+ walks and then moved on to running a round where there is two big hills and the rest is flatter or downhill, total 4,5km. Done those until now and ran 8km with him on Saturday, 11km today. He is annoyingly fresh afterwards
I'm using it all the time, currently have 4 races on the planning. Main event is a half marathon on 15th October. I like the suggestions a lot, but I'm always extra happy when an anaeroob one pops up. Today I got one of these by accident. 2*3*15sec at 3:10/km pace. I always struggle with sprints so ended up at average 2:51😂. Hope to do my HM at 1:44 which will be a massive pb from my current 1:55. Keep it up James, and just do your runs, who cares what they shout at you!
Can't stand hecklers but it helps being bald because they can't quite make out if im bald or a skin head. No need for it. Worse when they heckle some of the girls I run with, usually makes me get a bit fighty
I've been doing the daily suggestions for the last 5 month without missing a day, during that time my resting heart rate dropped from 46 to 37 BPM i prefer the heart rate training than pace
I started to use the Garmin suggested workouts before starting my current Garmin connect half marathon program. I liked it, but it suggested a lot of sprint days. I understand the value of those sessions but my body is not in a place where I can do all these sprint sessions. I started to feel tightness in my hamstrings pretty quickly. Garmin doesn’t gradually introduce those quicker sessions, if it knows you have the endurance base.
For the last couple of years I’ve used, with great success, plans printed out that I worked to. As I’ve got quicker and the plans harder I started to overtrain so I switched to the watch prompts with my race loaded in, and I’ve enjoyed the workouts, the way you use pace (the dial on the watch), and how it recognises when to change a workout or give a rest day. In Berlin it helped get me to 02 51 05 a new PB - although it actually predicted me at 02 56
Hi - I started using the Runna app to train for this weekend’s Amsterdam 1/2 Marathon - knocked over a minute off my time for 10km at the London 10,000 a few weeks ago so the training seems to be working.
I'm letting my Garmin coach me at the moment. Don't have a specific target but the variety and lots of base runs is having a good effect on my running.
I used the race widget and daily suggestions to prepare for my first half marathon (starting from couch potatoe). I've had almost 7 months to train, and it went quite well. I live in a hilly area, so I've set up my suggestions to use heart rate instead of pace. This worked ok with 2 caveats. I had to make sure my HR zones were set up correctly (I have a pretty low HR overall. The standard formulas just don't work. Had to do a guided lactate threshold test and set up the zones based on that). Second one is that I would change the setting to be pace based for VO2 max workouts (It was impossible to pace myself correctly for a 2 or 3 minute interval near my HRmax. I would start off too quickly to increase HR, then die off exhaustion after 60-90 seconds). Also, leading up to a race i did not believe I could do what I wanted, which is to finish in under 2 hours. The required 5:36 second pace just seemed impossible after all the easy runs. Turned out it was possible and I've finished in 1:58:48 :) Oh, and the last thing - I was used to running to my HR, but I had to remove it from my data screens during the race. Because of all the excitement I was in the red zone for the entire time. If I had seen that during the race I would probably slow down thinking I can't keep it up.
@@runningchannelI believe I used heart rate because it's what Sarah recommended on the video where she tried out Daily Suggested Workouts. So credits for that idea go to you :)
I use and love the Runna app. Sends the workouts to my Garmin. just have to rearrange runs and adjust the workouts myself around nonrunning life. Working on a half pb.
Currently training for my first half-marathon, using racing widget. Loving the trainings, lot of training that i wouldnt normally do. Really motivating to see improvements on race predictor. Fenix 7
Right now I am doing my Garmin half marathon plan but going forward I will do the suggested workouts simply because it is less rigid in terms of how many weeks should be in a training block
What those really slow running paces suggest to me, is that one can substitute those slower running days with a brisk walk. I have come to realize in recent years that walking actually has a benefit for the cardiovascular system.
I haven’t followed my Garmin! Strangely my colleague at office who is following a Garmin plan for her first Full, suggested I follow a plan 🤔So I am planning to try it out 🤗
The general consensus seems to be that it's better to have your Garmin set to heart rate based training, but you seem to have used pace? I think this is particularly important if you live somewhere hilly as pace and heartrate will vary considerably depending on route.
I use it as a guide, garmin is always super accurate at tracking how I feel after a bad night sleep and using HRV. The interval sessions it never is that good at though, always suggests something crazy like 3:00k for 15 secs x 3. Never see anything like 400m intervals or 1k repeats which I find way more effective
I have used it for three races this year although I modified it for the marathon block in the spring as the longest run wasn’t long enough as I wanted to run at least one run over 20 miles. Two out of three PB’s and the half marathon was incredibly hilly so would probably have been a PB if flat. On your training it seemed a bit sparse on the speed work but as you ran most days you should hopefully pb.
I was gonna say James is an underrated presenter. But I don’t talk to a ton of people who like to run. It’s me. I have underrated you James and I apologize 😂 keep it up!
Garmin training program is sick! I set one up when I first started running. I went from 45 minute 5km to 30 minute 5km in 3 months. I'm having a break to do some big cycling trips and then aiming at the 25 min 5km.
I have used dayli suggested workkouts for 2 half marathón trainings this year. Both ended up with a new PB on the hm distance :) I do however sometimes struggle to run as slow as it want me to, especially on recovery runs
Think the watch makes people go easier per run but more consistent running which is the ultimate goal for longevity. And if you go longer then eventually you go faster.
I’ve used this widget a fair bit . I like it .. just not the uncertainty of going to bed and then waking up to find my suggested run has changed overnight
I've tried doing 10k from Garmin Coach section. Basically a 14-week plan which aimed to guide me to a 10k "race". It was great, unfortunately injury I got riding MTB stopped me at week 13 and I had to drop. I'm still planning to try again on spring :)
James runs through the screens early in the video so take a look or DM us on instagram and we can run you through it. You can’t input how often you run but it will learn your habits and adapt accordingly
I trained for my first 10km following a Garmin program, it released video as I went. It was a pre written plan. But like you any structure to tick off is except.

I haven't yet, but I think not knowing what my weekly schedule is going to be, does not something I would prefer.

Have you used any training plans from garmin coach? Or just the daily suggestions?
I’d highly recommend switching Daily Suggestions to heart rate rather than pace! I find it helps me go by effort and gives some grace when hills make it tough to stick to a prescribed pace while also keeping my effort easy
Great that you’ve found the best of training for you! Have you got any races lined up?
Hey matey, can this be changed within Garmin? if it's a Garmin device you're talking about.
I had to abort the half marathon plan because of an injury and missed the race. I switched to the running suggestions between plans and it is a real nice experience. And now I am back in a training cycle for the half marathon.🎉
@@StHabibiJohnsonAhmedFranklin yes. You can still change it on your watch just before your run.
I tried heart rate and quickly realized that it isnt possible for me, i am used to higher heart rates due to a heart condition i had once so my bpm are about 10-20 higher at low intensity, on steep uphills at low pace up to 190 so bpm training isnt for me. (My heart condition i had once brought my pulse above 230 bpm, was in intensive care and had to stay in bed Plus 3 years of monitorisation afterwards with the frequency going down over time)
If people ever shout at you again just think the thought " i am on the road putting in the miles and hard work , what are they doing?" 😎 Great job !
That’s so good to hear thank you!!
Aw that’s so good to hear a positive experience!
Can i ask how you got on?
@@georgedawson235 sure thing, I finished marathon in 3:27, did the whole training based on daily suggestions for that too 🙌
Really loving your content! I just started running a month ago for the first time ever and loving it.
I enjoy how down to earth you all are and manage to make the content and running community so approachable for people like me!
So glad you enjoy our content 🥹 We love what we do and really appreciate the lovely feedback! Have you got any races or adventures coming up?
I did my first in 1:48:25! lol, nice. I was also very happy with the time.
Extremely impressive time🎉.
@@Martin_Edmondson haha, pretty spooky!
@@edwinchen7729 thank you!
Wow that is very good! What watch do you use?
It’s great seeing a regular person doing this type of content.
Why would people be so rude. You're out there. You're putting in major work. Great job!
That’s great to hear let us know how you get on 🙌🏻
You’re a hero James! Love how resilient and relatable this video was!
Thank you! Really glad you enjoyed it!
💪
love it - started the nhs couch to 5k in April and have a decent base now - got a forerunner 55 last week and letting garmin take it from here 😁
Thanks for this video James, it gives me more confidence in my running watch and why I should be wearing it.
I love running with my dog! I always take her on trail runs or easy runs when it’s cool enough. She loves going fast
Awwwww lovely! What kind of dog do you have?
Used the daily suggestions for training for a 3:10 marathon. It did work (basically nailed the time) but I felt the need to run even longer on the suggested long runs. But it's a super helpful and useful feature!
Amazing time!! Well done 👏
Very good! Congratulations!! Which watch did you use?
That’s exactly why James loved it too!
James makes excellent videos! Thank you! 😀
You missed quite a few features of the race day widget and suggested training, for example you can select heart rate instead of pace which helps if you live in hilly areas, you can also see a week of workouts in advance and select one of those if you don't fancy the workout it's suggested
We couldn’t get everything into this video unfortunately, but we do touch on more widget features in the upcoming video 😁
Totally get you on doing runs when its was quiet ,i struggle with feeling self conscious especially as i carry a few excess pounds (egg on stilts srings in to mind)
Good luck with the 10k🙂 and carry on making great content
Let us know how you get on with it!
You are inspiring. 🎉 Cheers on your 10k. In the end we are all racing ourselves.
Great video can't wait to see what happens in your 10k. Best of luck James!
That's a weird Garmin interface :)
I'm training for my 10k sub-60 minutes, and I think I could do it already cardio-wise, but my weakest side is legs/knees, feeling pain after some of the trainings. Using Garmin coach for the 3rd week, got a final "race" in December. So far I really like that I don't have to think about my intervals and programme, even though I still have to think about the route, so I come back home on time before the first work meeting in the morning.
Enjoy your running,
Cheers.
Run gorgeous, run! 😃
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I could barely run a 9 min mile to start.. and I followed the 1/2 Marathon Garmin Training Plan going for a sub 2 hr, 9:10 avg pace. After following the plan from January to June I completed the 1/2 in 1 hr 48 min 8:15 per mile. Really worked for me.
Most of my runs were running slower than I felt I could so going slower with volume pays off.
Really glad it worked so well for you!!

Mine wasn't as smart as this, it set a plan at the start of the week and didnt adjust at all in the middle of the week
It was nice for it take thinking out of it, but i didnt like not being able to plan ahead like you can with a regular plan.
I sometimes do wat Garmin tells me an after I stop the training session I run 1 hour mor in easy pace
I have just recently got a Garmin watch and it said to do a base run today. And I did it but I was very slow. I'm so happy I did it.
Great job!
Just ran my first half marathon last sunday. Followed my Garmin from the start of the training block down to the end. :)
Love the running channel. Watch one of these videos and I’m motivated to do some more training.
Really glad you enjoy our content ☺️ Is there anything you would like to see more of?

5 minutes?! That’s amazing 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Love how vulnerable you were in the middle there 🥰

i started training by my watch last year (after a year of not knowing how to train) and managed to get my time from 18:15 to 17:03 in a matter of months (i then got injured and haven’t beaten that PB yet, but we’re ignoring that)
the training plans may not be elite level, but they do help a lot
I have used the widget for over a year. I set mine to hr zones for the pacing! For the base runs, its helped alot. My base pace has increased by a considerable amount (over 1min per KM).
That’s great Clive! 💪
Go Echo! Looking great out front setting the pace 💪🐾

I’d LOVE to be able to run like you. I do 8+ km fast walks due to arthritic knees but running would be awesome. Inspiring video!
Sorry to hear about your arthritis, that must be incredibly frustrating. Did you use to run?
@@runningchannel I did when younger, as well as playing rugby and orienteering etc. I’m sure if I needed to I could run a couple of hundred metres but I wouldn’t be able to walk the next day. 🤣 so it’s walking for now.

Running with a dog is amazing.
He is annoyingly fresh afterwards
yeah Echo, James' dog is the same!

@@lewisgreenhalgh7546 no, Dutchie here,🇳🇱, it's Amsterdam half
Can't stand hecklers but it helps being bald because they can't quite make out if im bald or a skin head. No need for it. Worse when they heckle some of the girls I run with, usually makes me get a bit fighty
It’s so tough to not react to them isn’t it?! They should be encouraging people out there improving their life not dragging them down 😡
I've been doing the daily suggestions for the last 5 month without missing a day, during that time my resting heart rate dropped from 46 to 37 BPM i prefer the heart rate training than pace
Best of luck for Amsterdam, let us know how you get on!
Yes I am using it for my half marathon training. It's awesome and my dog is training with me
Amazing!!
Turned out it was possible and I've finished in 1:58:48 :)
Oh, and the last thing - I was used to running to my HR, but I had to remove it from my data screens during the race. Because of all the excitement I was in the red zone for the entire time. If I had seen that during the race I would probably slow down thinking I can't keep it up.
That’s an incredible time well done!!! Smart using heart rate instead of pace for your training that must have made such a difference 🙌🏻
@@runningchannelI believe I used heart rate because it's what Sarah recommended on the video where she tried out Daily Suggested Workouts. So credits for that idea go to you :)
James - you are a star! Ignore the comments - bet they couldn’t run 1 km!
Wtf! People shouting out of their cars? Says nothing about you and everything about them. Bet they make their parents so proud! Love the video
What those really slow running paces suggest to me, is that one can substitute those slower running days with a brisk walk. I have come to realize in recent years that walking actually has a benefit for the cardiovascular system.
Great job sticking with a training plan James. I predict not getting the 2018 PB time but getting very close like less than a minute off.
I haven’t followed my Garmin! Strangely my colleague at office who is following a Garmin plan for her first Full, suggested I follow a plan 🤔So I am planning to try it out 🤗
Let us know how you get on! 😁
The mullet of running gear! HAHA! Great short documentary!
That’s amazing! What a set of results you must have been proud of that 🙌🏻
I was gonna say James is an underrated presenter. But I don’t talk to a ton of people who like to run. It’s me. I have underrated you James and I apologize 😂 keep it up!
Haha he still says thanks! Underrated is a great way to describe him 😂
Atleast now I get to go watch all his videos now! Much love!!
Great video! I bought a Garmin last month and I love it. Haven't followed their training plans yet but I have high expectations.
Both ended up with a new PB on the hm distance :)
I do however sometimes struggle to run as slow as it want me to, especially on recovery runs
That’s amazing!! Congratulations on those PBs 🎉🎉🎉
How do you set up the Watch, so it knows that you are training for a 10k? And Can you say that you only wanna train e.g 3 times pr. Week?
James runs through the screens early in the video so take a look or DM us on instagram and we can run you through it. You can’t input how often you run but it will learn your habits and adapt accordingly
I trained for my first 10km following a Garmin program, it released video as I went. It was a pre written plan. But like you any structure to tick off is except.
Garmin coach plans are also really good. (Rather than suggested daily workouts)
Great job keep it up 😊
