Hey guys, I whole-heartedly respect your religious beliefs, and that your devotion to your God is something that a) gives you comfort, and b) gives you direction. That said, I think for the sake of really, actually grasping the meaning of the song, you may want to not rely so much on your knowledge of religion, because this is not in any way religious music, as you've already gathered. Let's start with a breakdown of what you're hearing.
"Kill does not mean die." -Well, obviously in a literal sense, it does. But this particular song is about the music industry. I don't personally understand exactly what this line is supposed to mean, but I would assume it has something to do with the life of a piece of music. Because something new has come along and 'killed' the old piece, that does not mean that the piece is actually 'dead.' People will still go back to it if it's a worthwhile piece. This ties into the "New does not mean best" line. People are so quick to try and find the 'next big thing' that they have a tendency to sweep some great things from the past under the rug, and just ignore it as if it doesn't mean anything anymore.
"Children are afraid of the gods." -In the context of a song about the music industry, to me, this seems like a jab at the really big names that don't actually put out music that means anything. The level of popularity is intimidating and may discourage people who don't want to listen to their music from listening to what they actually want to listen to. I know that I felt a lot of pressure when I was younger to listen to what was popular, even though I didn't want to. I listened to a lot of Slipknot in middle school, actually. This line may also speak to the level of maturity of listeners who are afraid to go against the grain, if you will.
You guys don't seem to have much faith in the way the song is written. "I'm guessing it just rhymes." Yes, it does rhyme, but those lines do mean something. Every single line is written with deliberate meaning. Corey is smarter than you're giving him credit for.
I don't want to completely write your eyes out so I'll sum up my thoughts as this. Don't rely so heavily on your beliefs that you miss the point of a song entirely. Not everyone is going to set out to speak the word of their deity, it's not always a spiritual thing. I also noticed that you guys have a tendency to take things a little bit too literally. A lot of the language is figurative, you can't really take it at face value. Corey wants you to think. Not to say that you guys aren't thinking about it, but I feel like you are expecting it to be more basic than it is. Also fun fact, more than one member of this band is religious. Christian, to be more specific. I don't know exact denominations, but that's not as relevant. Hit me up with your thoughts, I'm curious to know what you think of my ramblings. Have a great day!

Iscariot90 thanks for sharing The more I learn about this song the more I understand it’s meaning I am seriously impressed with it. It is a lot deeper than I gave it credit for.
Your observation on “kill does not mean die” and “children are afraid of gods” makes a lot of sense.
To be honest it seems I share the same views as they do regarding current mainstream music. Lol.
Making this video was fun and a learning experience for me. My goal was to learn more about the culture and so far I’ve learned more than I expected. I look forward to doing more videos.

@@roberthoughton7127 Yeah man, I definitely encourage you to keep delving into this stuff. If you check out another song by Slipknot, maybe go for something like The Devil in I, which was written about the passing of the former bassist Paul Gray, who unfortunately died of a drug overdose. Or, if you want to hear a different side of Corey, check out a song by Stone Sour called Through Glass, which happens to be another song about the music industry. Or anything by Tool. Just literally anything, lol.
As for the culture, in my experience, metalheads are some of the chillest, most friendly, and just generally cool people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting, regardless of race, religion, gender, or whatever other labels we like to box ourselves in with. @Robert Houghton, you might find an interview with Corey interesting. He actually did a couple with Larry King that are kinda a fun watch (despite the heavy subject matter at points) because of the contrast between the two of them. One was a few years ago and the other a month or so ago.

      ua-cam.com/video/gU8iGCe9ohk/v-deo.html
If you decide to dive into more metal I'm sure you'll get swamped with requests. May help to either watch the lyric videos or pull up the lyrics to reference as you watch. Takes a bit to adjust to the unclean vocals for most people. Probably what turns so many off to the genre before they give it much of a chance.
Edit: You should check out August Burns Red. Great band IMO, and the members are all pretty outspoken about their faith. Might be a good jumping off point because they do use sort of spiritual imagery in their lyrics.

False dichotomy. The compartmentalisation of things into "religious" vs "secular" is an 18th century invention to enable bourgeois control and amoral business and political decision-making, and the alienation of people from spirituality so that addictives can be marketed in place of it, and ultimately so that spirituality itself can be commodified and repackaged to people as a range of products for sale, rather than an intrinsic part of yourself which cannot be bought (as grace cannot be bought).

But based on a video with people thrashing around covered in blood I have to wonder if he's being consistent. With very few exceptions a majority of blood is recovered through violence of some kind especially the quantity shown in the video (obviously it's not real blood but an artistic representation). He may not be violent as an individual but he is presenting it symbolically through his video and condoning it through moshing at shows. I've been in a mosh pit once, IT WAS VIOLENT!

This song is about the sad state of the current music industry. So my interpretation The crazy looking on the bus represent the “band wagon” that believe music is only good for a month and then it’s dead and played out. The people in black represent the record labels who pretty much control the masses however they want by just pumping out terrible single after terrible single after terrible single. The people on the floor are literally begging for more and more out of these labels. And then the blood being rained on them is the actual meaningless/thoughtless singles themselves being manufactured solely to sell for a few months then disappear due to having no substance
That’s pretty much what I took from it

The lead singer Corey Taylor is an Atheist. He's openly admitted it. But he has no problem with people having their own faiths (so long as they don't try to force it on another person after that person says that they aren't interested in it and then after a person says that they aren't religious or Christian they're told that they will go to Hell etc.) As for the rest of the band I'm not sure what they believe. But Corey has stated numerous times that they aren't a satanic band. A lot of people think they are because of some of the lyrics (and a song called "The Heretic Anthem" where the choirs of the song is "If you're 555 then I'm 666! What's it like to be a Heretic?!!" I'd actually be interested in seeing your take on that song. It's actually about how his genre of music is treated in the music industry) but those type of lyrics are more symbolic and metaphorical of being viewed as an outsider because he doesn't follow the typical lifestyle of "normal" society and isn't a religious person so a lot of people around him while growing up in Iowa dubbed him as a Satan worshipper or just another dredge of society for being an outcast. Slipknot does not condone or promote violence. They sing about it sometimes but it's metaphorical. They do not want their fans to do any of the things that would be considered violent in their lyrics. They actually want their fans to use the music they make to purge their "demons" and use it to get through the hard times in their lives. They're about making it easier for people who feel like they don't fit in to the stereotypical mold of society and having something they can feel a part of with like-minded people. They've become a culture of exceptance for the disenfranchised of the world. Slipknot statistically takes a four year break (the longest being six years but that was a rough time for them. They lost their bassist Paul Gray (may he RIP) and not that long after their drummer started having complications due to a disease that affected his spine so he wasn't in the band anymore. They had to decide wether they would continue on or call it a day.) between albums and a lot of the members (there are nine of them!) do side projects on their "off" time or are in other highly successful bands, the most obvious being Corey Taylor's original band Stone Sour which is the band he actually left to join Slipknot he and got back together after Slipknot put out two highly successful albums and had toured relentlessly so they needed a break (there was even talk of breaking up because it was brutal the way they toured their first album and then imediatly wrote the second and went back out and toured that one.). This song All Out Life is going to be on their upcoming sixth album that is rumored to release sometime this summer or fall. They recorded and released this song early because they wanted to do something special for their upcoming twentieth anniversary of their self titled first album and what better day for Slipknot than Halloween?!!! But it's not a comeback or anything like that. They've still been highly popular and successful over the years and if you count touring haven't actually been "gone" all that long. They will start recording the album late spring/early summer after Corey has had a chance to catch his breath after touring with Stone Sour. That man never stops! Two larger than life bands, a cover band called the Dumfux, four successful books, acting, so many guest appearances with bands (like Korn), podcasts, interviews and so much more. Soooooo, got carried away with it! Anyway, I'd really like to see you do some more Slipknot reactions and Mudvayne too. Thanks for the video!

This was an excellent comment. Very informative and gave me lots to think about. Between yours and a few other comments, I have a new perspective on the band. It's confusing because their metaphors and visuals seem to contradict their message but I guess this is what makes their art special to their fans. It's almost like a reverse subliminal message. They appear one way but are saying something else. I respect that from an artistic standpoint. I read the lyrics to Heretic anthem and may do a video on it. But lines like "Throw a suicide party and I'm guaranteed to f****ing snap" confuse me? Based on what I'm learning about them this must be a metaphor? Could you help me undertand it?

I must admit that some of the lyrics are rather obscure in this one. okay, that's fine and dandy and all but to clarify ,more often then not, bands use this kind of depiction, not to be all like "i mean one thing but say something different, expecting you to understand us without the key singals.", but to show that in a lot of supposed "bad","horrific" or "disturbing" scenes there is a ambiguous grey area. Especially when you're dealing with such a powerfull and raw emotion like anger, sometimes the message gets lost in ther translation. Plus it's not exactly helping when you are missing the context of a situation and trying to analys it, then there's just not enough info to make a justifiable jugdment. The perferct song to properly illustrate this specific thing would be imho "Wrong side of Heaven" by Five Finger Death Punch.

Okay, I was about to rip into this but I read some comments and I'll give you credit for your open mindedness in the comments section so instead I'll offer some advice and encouragement. First, most metal songs are written with little to no theology in mind. Try judging it from a world view first and then, as you see fit, use biblical passages to judge how it relates from your perspective. I say this because viewing it from a theological point of view first will often confuse the artists message, defeating the point in the first place. Second, concerning your remark about how the positive message of this song didn't match the music or video (I'm paraphrasing), metal music taps into anger much like romantic songs taps into love. Anger isn't a bad thing, even Christ got angry, it's often about tapping into and dealing with injustice and venting the anger over something wrong. Using the music for Happy by Pharrell Williams to talk about how mad the music business makes you just doesn't make any sense. Last... metal heads don't really take themselves very seriously. We know that much of what we watch and listen too can be over the top and kinda silly, but that's part of the fun of it. We make fun of ourselves a lot. We do, however, take offense when an outsider uses a public platform to tarnish our music and message from an apparent standpoint of ignorance... BUT... we are patient and understanding as well when someone shows that they are at least willing to listen. For most of us, having someone that doesn't get it but is willing to listen is a rare treat. I look forward to watching your future content.

Not about religion or theology. It's about the record industry and pop culture, and how it's there to turn out talentless artist sell an image, increasingly shallow and celebrating violence and crime (mumble rap) or glamorising sex and image (pop and r n b).
Metal tends to have more a diverse subject matter and complex formation of lyrics and instrumental composition, using challenging subject matter, metaphors, and themes to get it's point across.
Some straight out just tell stories, some are political, and some are just dumb throwaway tunes.
The comment 'we are not your kind' is a statement of how retailers and alternative fans can like and appreciate some (and I stress some) commercial music, but would be just at home listening to a piece of Wagner, or classic led zep, as much as a player song or some slipknot.

Just because slipknot plays what they play and us fans and us atheist live our lives the way that we do, doesnt mean that we live in anarchy or that we do drugs or that we go out there stealing and killing. Just because we are not part of your believes doesnt mean that we are bad people. And yes we hold the keys to our success. The fact people still believe that they depend on something or somebody else says that they are afraid of taking responsability for their actions. Instead of preaching that people need believe that some higher entity will fix their problems why dont you start teaching people to grow some balls and take ACTIONS for what they do. Max Goldberg thanks for the comment but they are about the same as Slipknot and Justin Bieber. Lol.
Just to clarify, when Christians use the term God they are referring to Yahweh, the God of the Bible. According to the Bible (which we believe to be true) there is only one true God. Making all others who claim to be God false. So by default the term “God” can only apply to Yahweh. Even from a theoretical perspective the difference between “Allah” and Yahweh is pretty drastic. The biggest difference is Yahweh offered His only begotten Son Jesus Christ (Yeshua) as a sacrifice for sin and salvation only comes by faith in Him and not by works (Romans 3:20). Allah offers nothing like this and requires you to earn your salvation. The Quran teaches that salvation is based primarily on purification from good deeds (Quran 7:6-9). A Muslim can become righteous through prayer, almsgiving, fasting, and living according to the Quran. This is in opposition to the Faith based salvation of Yahweh.
A devout Muslim would assuredly tell you they are drastically different and consider such a statement to be “blasphemy” of the highest order. In some Moslem countries people have even been put to death for similar statements. (See Wikipedia’s article on “blasphemy and Islam).
Hope this gives you some perspective.

@@roberthoughton7127 Its just an Arabic word for God, Arabic speaking Chrsitans say Allah, just s German ones say Gott. They, much like the Jewish faith believe in the same god as you, its just a very different path and culture that birthed it.They even count Jesus as one of the prophets.

    • @roberthoughton7127

shannon smith I understand “god” is a generic term used to reference a deity. my main point was to show that allah and the One true God of Christianity are not the same deity by comparison.
You’re correct about Muslims seeing Jesus as a prophet. They consider him one of 5 messengers from god known as “Ul al-Azm”. The Quran also refers to him as “servant of Allah” (19:30), “messiah” (5:75) and “messenge or prophet” (61:6).
The problem is they don’t believe he’s God which Jesus claimed on numerous occasions. This, by their own definition would make him a FALSE prophet and blasphemer. By necessity this would make Muhammad a false prophet for calling a “liar and blasphemer” any of the above little titles.
My goal is only to give perspective. Hope my comment was helpful in that.

The band Slipknot write their songs in forms of poetry. You have to dig deeper, in between the words, look at the big picture. When you read poetry, you don't just take it "by definition".. you decipher it and you feel and sense for what it means to the writer. You have to have a more broad perception, more knowledge on life, the media, music industry, Corey's life... in order to understand. But..Your religion has caused you to have such strong tunnel vision on certain topics, and I truly don't mean that rudely. It just seems like you're being too.. eh... shallow. Dig deeper.
    Also....♡ I love Slipknot ♡

This song is for all of us who miss Good music , not face neck tattoo , trash garbage perverted violent prideful lyrics that music has become. To me he's calling them out and telling ppl what's going on behind the scenes cause he's living it and knows the truth of the music industry and the ppl who run it.I do believe in God and put him in the songs I write, and try to speak on honest truths I've learned or felt through experiences in my live . I feel Corey is calling the young musicians to take a stand be true to the music life and themselves for ppl follow music especially kids. And he and his band have children now so there probably focused by the scene there kids get to grow up in. He grew up in the 80s when music was 👌🙌. Thank you God bless you like your channel .
