Corey Taylor explained the song's meaning to The Pulse of Radio: "'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself," he said. "Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest things you can do, is to give into that side of yourself." And that you can have fun. Crahan also explained at the song was about "finding past devils, past things, becoming one with it, and doing away with it."..

Of all the deaths shown, Mick's is the most poignant for me. He's well known for being the band member that takes his role in Slipknot the most seriously. His position in the band (#7) is important enough to him that he has it tattooed on his arm, and inlaid into his guitar fretboard. It's a part of who he is.
The director of the video asked each band member which death scared them, and that's how each member was killed in the video. When Mick removes his mask, it tears his face off as well, because it's become part of his being. I think it's symbolic of his biggest fear: not being part of that brotherhood anymore. He'd rather die than lose his band.

I think the reason that most people like Iowa and self-titled more than the others is because they are more raw and pure. All of their music is very emotionally powerful and intense, but those two albums in particular express those emotions much more powerfully than the others.
That being said, their newer music expresses those same emotions in a much more refined way. It represents the band’s slow catharsis that happened throughout its life.

From what I've read as well as what i percieve from it as well as the entire Grey Chapter album is moving on in life. You've grieved and mourned the loss but you have to let it go at some point or else it can consume you. I've lost alot of loved ones but none crippled me like the loss of my mom did. I had an unstable relationship with her and near the end it was almost non existent. She had alchohol and substance abbuse issues that i just couldn't deal with anymore. Before she died, my last words to her were not kind. Up until a couple of years ago, there were years of anger, guilt, pain, and confusion that i had refused to confront. If you don't bring those emotions out and confront them and lay them to rest, they can begin to alter your personality and your very being. Life is too short to be carrying such a burden.

You guys deserve a lot more viewers. I really appreciate the structure with thoughts and analysis put into every song, it makes for very entertaining content. Best reaction channel I've come across. Hoping to see more metal down the line from you two boys.
And since you are big on the biblical themes, I have a suggestion for you that I believe you will enjoy. I will not write too much here, but this song has A LOT of meat on its bones for you to pick at and analyze both in terms of its lyrics and musical composition. Please consider: Ne Obliviscaris - The Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope.
(Some prior research about the song is highly recomended).
Greetings from a norwegian heathen. Keep it up.

Burying your past and trying to forget it will only lead you to repeating the same mistakes, not to mention the stress, anger and depression it can create.
It is not good to obsess about your past or to dwell in it, but it is essential to acknowledge it and learn from it in order to move forward.

I've used this scripture so many times. I'm so glad it can be brought up in a slipknot video. I'm not by any means as close as I need to be to the Lord, and I try to be as knowledgeable as I can of the Bible. I've been back and forth with my relationship with God, and I do believe, bit I don't wanna feel like a hypocrite because I don't live every day like I should. And you so perfectly brought this up towards the end of the video. THANK YOU.

Always love watching your reactions particularly when it's from my favourite band! Take care (ps the 3rd reaction was unsainted Rob, you were right)
This is from Corey Taylor: Corey Taylor explained the song's meaning to The Pulse of Radio: "'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself," he said. "Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest things you can do, is to give into that side of yourself." And that you can have fun. Crahan also explained that the song was about "finding past devils, past things, becoming one with it, and doing away with it."..
I also read it was about shedding their former selves and the birth of a new beginning hence why their older masks and costumes were being killed off in wake of the birth of their new selves. So you were pretty spot on with you analysis Rob! Great stuff. I'm not a religious man but I really enjoy hearing your analysis on songs afterwards, you have a great understanding about psychology, all the teirs of human emotion and thanks to your channel I've been able to see the correlation between verses from the bible and almost every emotion people can go through and I can completely see how reading the bible would help people find themselves and heal. I never thought I would find such an interest in this but you're so well grounded between your relation with your beliefs and understanding of people it's hard not to appreciate and enjoy your work. Thanks again.

As someone who suffers from repressed childhood trauma, PTSD, depression, and anxiety it all VERY much impacts you and the point of unpacking it all is to identify why you feel certain ways in reaction to other seemingly normal things (like someone wanting to help you but you lash out instead of accepting help due to learned behavior to be self sufficient), or why you have toxic behavior or have intrusive thoughts or can't control certain impulses. Once you have a clear picture of where it comes from you can learn healthy coping mechanisms and rebuild how your brain thinks. If these things go on for a long time, especially during adolescence, it impacts the development of your brain. Obviously we're all unique and react and handle these things differently due to our genetic makeup and specific experiences etc.

To truly understand what is going on you must listen to the entirety of this album start to finish. The album was dedicated to the former bassist Paul Gray who overdosed. This album got me through the hardest time of my life. It is all about the grieving process and it helped me get passed the death of my grandfather who was more like a father to me than my own father. This album is a 10/10 recommendation for someone who has lost someone.
