It was a wonderful choice! Corey has opened up a bit about the song but essentially he's facing his depression and his demons but is also saying that "if the world wants to paint me as a villain, then that's what I'll be". Many congrats on the new studio by the way and a suggestion for the future would be monsters by shinedown, it's really new but i had to watch it a few times to see and hear all of the intricacies.

“Reaching out for the hand of God but did you think you’d shake your own” is my favorite line in this song. I’ve always taking it to mean that people are so arrogant and naïve that they fancy themselves to be God but when you’re looking for help that’s not how you’ll be saved because you hold no real power. This also comes from my Christian perspective where I know God is all powerful and humans are not anything like matching that so I just think that they’re pointing out how when people fancy themselves God they are left in their despair because that’s not the case.

I think the biggest factor in that is how "did you think you'd..." is one of the most common ways to start a rethorical question. It's framed as a question, but in truth it's a warning.
Also like the whole song has the tone of a depressed person snapping at someone who keeps telling them to just pray the depression away, and telling them how they're misinterpreting and misusing the Christian faith.

I think the "never kill myself to save my soul" line is more literal.
People with problems, depression, suicidal thoughts, often are called "troubled souls." The lyric from Corey Taylor is saying that he's overcome or overcoming his own depression. if you know the bands history you know a small sliver of shit that Corey Taylor has been through.
Of course the line also references religion and how Suicide is the ultimate cowards act. People often think ending one's own life is way to escape the pain, but all it does is hurt the people around you.

the original reason was because Shawn Crahan used to bring a clown mask to rehearsals when they started as a band. but Corey did state they wear masks more or less let the animal off the chain and feel free on stage. there was also someone in the band saying that we as people are looked at as numbers and not anything else to a lot of people and the uniforms with numbers was just a play on that idea.

They took the joy of faith out of me, they made me skeptical of faith, until I was much older and realized the church and the faith are not the same thing.
I feel like a lot of people raised catholic have the same experience, and non catholic christians always think when we talk about that that we are attacking all christians, rather than the church, and in fact even take it as a personal attack on THEIR faith, which is often miles apart from what we have an issue with to begin with.

Max Sand I listened to the song and it definitely could be taken in different messages. “Pick a lord and you pray to it” for me was criticizing how people put superficial things on pedestals in their lives, something which I never really understood. Also, the line where it says “But your bibles don’t work on me,” I was thinking about negative or false preaching that goes on in the Christian faith in general, where instead of being an open-arms and loving faith, it’s presented as “Do this or go to hell!” Another thing that’s always bothered me.
As for what you said about “You killed the saint in me...”, I definitely agree with that. I was also raised Catholic and hated how other people of my faith and non-Catholic Christians look down on you when you have a certain music taste and pull out “the devil” card.
The Church and the faith might not be the same thing at all but people within the Church (from ordinary people to the archbishop who confirmed me) have strengthened my faith for sure. What the song did for me was basically give me all that anger and rage from the negativity I experienced from other people of the faith and turn it into as being part of the community that wants to help. Instead of turning back on the Church, I’d rather turn my back to the negative ideas and views that plague it.
But I think it’s awesome to see other Catholic metalheads. It’s always a funny dynamic when you have people from both sides saying one isn’t compatible with the other.

    • @BlameMaxSand

@@gabrielcabello9227 and there in lies the main hook of the song "I'll never kill myself to save my soul". I like metal, it's a part of me, and to not listen to it because some people interpret it wrong or whatever would be killing a part of me to, in their mind, "save my soul". I refuse. I don't believe God will damn me for eternity over my taste in music, and in fact God would understand the message the artist is getting across better than anyone, so there is zero chance God would misinterpret some lyrics. If I am to be judged harshly it's going to be because of my Faith or my Deeds not living up to what they should, not because I listen to Slayer.

    • @gabrielcabello9227
      @gabrielcabello9227 4 роки тому +1

Max Sand I completely agree with that! I took it the same way too, “I refuse to change who I am just to accommodate what *you* think is a ‘good’ Catholic” was the thing that played in my head.
And yeah, God is omniscient so even if a song is really anti-Christian, He would know if you’re still true to Him.
I agree with the last part too, judge me on my character not on my tastes.
Metal to me has a really big thing that is common with Church: You’re part of this massive body of people, a community, and everyone is part of something that is way larger than themselves.
God knows that when my love for metal was strong, my faith was too at the same time. Metal can just be another pipeline that leads you straight to God.

Most of my family is Christian and they are some of the best people you will ever meet. I don't go to church, but there is a place called riverside in my hometown that has a big following and they do a lot for the community. Not only do they not help a lot of people, they are super open minded. I went for a service once with my mom and I left feeling better about life. Everyone is very nice and friendly and they don't judge. I'm not saying that Christians are wrong, but I think no one really knows until they die and after that point how do you pass along the knowledge. If you guys read this comment I am actually curious about reincarnation. They say that christians use to believe in it and then it was taken out of text or however you want to put it. I would like to know your thoughts on that. Keep up the good work and thank for being open minded about the metal community. Some of the most talented musicians exist in this genre not to metion the most diverse type of music is metal.

Pastor Rob your the man if everybody watched this they would understand slipknots message better. I was just dealing with my depression over an hour ago and I turned on slipknots new song solway frith and it locked my depression away for now. Depression is hard to deal with and slipknot is the best release I've found in life.

So about the chorus lyrics.. I though about it for a while cause it hits home hard - I relate so much. I came up with this: "I'll never kill myself to save my soul" - I will never literally kill myself, to stop the suffering inflicted on my soul by living; the pain, the depression are things that physically hurt the body (and mind) and tire out the soul. You know the old "permanent solution for temporary problems" thing.. But by abandoning the body, will you really relieve your soul from them?
This is how I interpret it, love your channel guys!
Amazing to see Christians who keep an open mind and don't just "oh noo it's the devils music blabalba", so thank you for that!

I reccommend taking some time and reading 7 Deadly Sins By Corey Taylor. the book is his thoughts and life experiences with the 7 sins. It helps put a lot of perspective in his lyric choices.

One thing about slipknot (or stone sour), especially if you listen to interviews with Corey about Songs and/or lyrics: Don't take them at face value. The meaning can be something totally different. An example being "Killpop", "30-30-150", "Duality". The man is a lyrical genius, and as you can tell from Snuff, there's a lot of depth behind what he's saying. Definite props for giving them an honest, unbiased review

I'm not religious myself, but I do believe in a higher power. So it's always refreshing to see people of faith who aren't super judgmental.

I get this whole thing about martyr totally different.
I think when he sings :
" Did you think you could do it again? I'm not your sin
I was all that you wanted and more, but you didn't want me
I was more than you thought I could be
So I'm setting you free, I'm setting you free "
He talks straight to god who created us and its a metaphore to creation of the world and first sin.
" I was all that You wanted and more " - God wanted us and created us on his image, then " i was more than You thought I could be " Human that god expected to be "saint" made something that he didnt even think its possible thats why he says "more than You thought" that answers " but You didnt want me " - when god got rid of us on his sacred land.
"How dare You martyr me im not Your sin"
I think he means that the fact god created us that way and didnt think it through is not our sin and that is gods sin, and for punishing us for being the way he created us is martering humans for the fault of his own.
Just my quick interpretation of the song.
    God Bless!

I would say that the "you" Corey is shouting at can be interpreted as God but I think it can also be interpreted (for us peeps who prefeer a non biblical connection *I don't mean to argue against your take*) as the world and the people around him, forming his character and molding his personality and therefore also trying to force him into a place he does not want to be in.

The thing with depression is it literally is a dark devilish cloud that sucks all the goodness and all the life out of you. I’ve suffered with depression and anxiety for years now and it gets so overwhelming it consumes every ounce of you as a human being. I’m a big Slipknot fan and unfortunately for people like Corey, myself and many others, the dark cloud blocks out any goodness. No matter how much you Pray, no matter how much you beg and plead, the darkness always wins
