Killer track, IMO, the guitar outro is among Marks finest solos. Needs to be heard more.

This was their first album to reach number one on the UK charts so the British public must have enjoyed it.....

Contemporary Rock transitions to Rock transitions to Hard Rock all bound together by the lyrics and vocals. Continuing the vocals into the first part of the Hard Rock/outro is smart, if they hadn't continued the lyrics into the first part of the Hard Rock transition the song would have fallen apart imo. Very Dylan lyrics and vocals. Where Mark sings about the organ grinder you start to get that very poppy Dylan organ from Highway 61 Revised. I think the first two styles of music here sound like a mix of Blonde and Blonde and Highway 61. My personal favorite right behind Private Investigations. Awesome song.

Down The Road Wherever by Mark Knopfler 2018 is so impressive. It's his 9th solo album. My favorite from all of his huge catalogue. He also has 9 Movie soundtrack scores dating from 1983 to 2017. When he wrote Private Dancer he said it feels like it had to be sung by a female so he gave it to Tina Turner. Also in 1983 Dire Straits released a 4 track dance EP with a fun type atmosphere as he said it was just a break from this "careful" Love Over Gold project. I love it too. Anyway Cheers All the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸

Incredible musicianship and songwriting. You might check out 'Communique' or 'On Every Street' next. While 'Making Movies' has some excellent tracks and classic hits (especially on side A) from the band, I think you might feel the same way as you did about this album and 'Brothers in Arms'. Each Dire Straits album is unique in style, but some are just more cohesive and flow better than others when listening to all the way through. 'Communique' does have a vibe closer to the debut album but I think it was also fresh in many ways. 'On Every Street' gives you a bit of an impression of where Mark was heading into a new direction outside of Dire Straits. Some atmospheric songs as well as more country rock/ blues tunes. He wrote the songs around the time he was playing with another group The Notting Hillbillies. They even performed some of the songs he wrote for that last album.

Comminiqué is basically a follow-up to the first album with a more polished production. Making Movies was a more mature sounding album and all the better for it.

@@DavidG-u2k They are all great. Many people think Making Movies is their best album and I can see why. I just personally like the more raw or pared back sound of Communique if considering the album as a whole.

That's a kitchen sink album. Has a little bit of everything and then some. Their most diverse album as far as musical styles and it all fits together great imo. Love that album, the Country flavor songs are fantastic Country.

"Planet of New Orleans," "You And Your Friend" and "Calling Elvis" are stellar standouts!

Holy crap! Feel the emotion!!!! The 5 songs on this album are GOLD! I understand your feelings, but that would have required 5 albums in the appropriate style of each song.
This album shows the genius of MK; his song writing, lyricism, guitar work and story telling. GOAT in my opinion.

Of the three remaining Dire Straits albums I’ve always favored “Making Movies” over “Communique” and “On Every Street”. I’ll wait until you get to the latter two to listen again and reevaluate.

And there was also "Extendedance Play" wich only had 3 short songs, but good and fun songs like "Twisting by the pool" and "Two young lovers". And there are of course Marks 10 solo albums and 9 movie theme albums

Twisting by the Pool reminds me of The Ramones. Two Young Lovers reminds me of early Chicago style Rock. Fun songs.
