Darryl Hall! Blue-eyed soul with that voice! Great stuff, great songs. Absolute shame what has happened between him and John Oates. Just think if they would have kept going. 🤷 Thanks Professor. Everybody have a great Hump Day. 🐫
I 100% agree with you about “Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid”! You are the only other person I’ve heard say that. It’s amazing. The drums during the climax of the song are fantastic. All of it is.
I was a huge H&O fan in the 80s (4th row in Atlanta in 1988 for "Ooh Yeah" tour!) & found myself discovering other music in the 90s. I watched the VH1 show "Behind The Music" & they featured H&O in early 2002. They've practically become my fav group-I bought all of Daryl's solo CDs. "Do It For Love" & "Can't Stop Dreaming" (Daryl solo) might be my fav CDs of theirs
Hall and Oates snuck up on me. I never paid a lot of attention to them, I just liked each song I heard from them. Then, one day, I realized I liked a LOT of songs by them and had become a fan without realizing it.
You can almost hear the contempt dripping from his voice when he mentions his former partner’s name. It’s such a horrible shame that it had to devolve into this.

It's always great to see, read and hear what Daryl Hall and / or John Oates have to say. Thanks, Professor. Your description calls his first name just "Dary" both times.
Uh oh!
@@ProfessorofRockJust saw that.
In my comment I noticed I spelled Oates as Oats. Happy hump day 😂

I’ve always loved Hall & Oates, and later when I saw Daryl‘s House and how good he was at participating in other people’s songs, it solidified that esteem. He’s really an amazing musician-super talented, and I’m not surprised he’s still going strong! I also like that he collaborated with Dave Stewart for his latest album.
Born in 1966, they carried me through my youth, adolescent years and through my teens. I love them dearly.
We just saw Daryl solo with Howard Jones in St. Augustine, FL. My husband wore a Lynyrd Skynyrd shirt like you have on! It was our 5th time seeing him solo, and easily the best time! Daryl’s voice was at peak performance.
🏆⭐😎🙏
Thank you for sharing this. I always love to hear a musician and singer discuss what a song meant to them and how it was inspired.
Not being critical, but wondered why Sarah Smile n wasn't discussed? From the first time I heard that song, and still today, that song is difficult to listen to. Just EVERYTHING... It's very moving and sad and mournful and I can't do anything to change that. 🥺😢💔
Hey Professor of Rock, Just want to Thank you for asking Daryl about "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid". That's definitively my fave song by them.
So cool! I agree. Masterpiece!
That song was ubiquitus on the radio back then for sure
I always found that many of the Hall and Oates videos were just kinda silly and distracted from the excellence of the music. Great interview once again Adam
Thanks Fred!
I think the band would actually agree with you on that. But they were still fun to watch.
Interesting story. Rock & Soul pt 1 was the first album that I ever purchased. Then after-hearing "Somethings Are Better Left Unsaid" I didn't care what I had to do to get that album. I'm not ashamed to admit that song gave me chills and often tears would form in my eyes. it was such a powerful song. I had to have it, and that album became the second one that I ever purchased with my own money.
My favorite hall and Oates song rn is I can't go for that
Darryl Hall one of the best singer's in my opinion. one on one is one of my favorite songs too. Every song hall and Oats released were great. Possession Obsession is one of my favorite songs of hall & Oats.
Thanks Wayne!
Mine too.
I absolutely love Somethings Are Better Left Unsaid. It's one of my favorite songs of all-time from any artist.
Always love y'all's interviews with the artists! Y'all just know how to get them to bare their souls! 🤠
My favorite band of the'80's!!
Big Bam Boom was a cassette that was on heavy rotation with Born in the USA and Purple Rain in 1984 and '85.
One of my favorite bands while growing up in the 80's.
This was interesting and fun. 12:37 Out Of Touch is my favorite Hall and Oates song. Cool video. ^_^
One of my absolute favorite groups of all time and one of the greatest PURE Singers of the last 50+ years!!!
Sadly I wanted to take my mom who's a huge fan of Hall & Oats, to see them live here in Miami about a decade ago but tickets were an insane $50 each for nosebleed seats!
Been a fan of Hall and Oates since "You Make My Dreams". Instantly hooked by that bouncy groove and Daryl's punchy voice, and been bopping along ever since. PS: RIP Quincy Jones, probably the finest producer ever. He brought out the best in everyone he worked with, and he worked with so many giants!
So true!
Loved Hall & Oates, since their very early days, in Philly. Abandoned Luncheonette is a classic.
Loved Hall and Oates back in the 80's. Saw them in concert long ago, so glad I saw them before their breakup.
Same!
same us were like late 90s maybe
Hall & Oates was a big part of my 80s soundtrack. Great stuff. Thanks professor!
Thanks for listening
Great interview again Professor! Absolutely one of my favorite bands!! Such a talented musical genius!🤘🔥
Rock on!
Fantastic interview. Love several songs by this legendary duo. Shame that he and John had a major falling out.
growing up with Hall and Oates( late 70s to present).... all over the radio and started to hate them... then in 1980s picked up the private eyes cassette and now today... I cannot tell you how much it has become my go to songs/sound artist!!!
Love Hall and Oates, huge huge part of me growing up. Great music, great videos and dahm Darrell's hair always looked better than mine. Loved his beautiful hair!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Again , shows me i know NOTHING about music. But i know what i like. Great interview
Thanks!
I got his latest on vinyl autographed, sounds amazing! Always been a huge fan, many memories especially in the 80's. Keep on rockin Professor!
One of the greats! Big Bam Boom is one the best 80s albums. One of the few I owned as a kid
One on one is an absolutely brilliant song and has always been one of my favourites.
So good!
Jeez, been so long since I heard this song! It's still one I stop and listen to.
Great interview. He's so down to earth. It's great learning things I never knew about their songs. Now I cant get Private Eyes out of my mind 🎸🎤♥️🇨🇦lol.
Same! Ha ha!
I love all the songs but the deeper dives like Downtown Life and Wait for Me really showcase the genius level writing and vocals.
Hall and Oates have done nothing but rise on my personal favorite artist list. From Sara Smile to all of their 80's hits, they are just gold and so timeless in a very odd way because they are also so of their time....... I love the joy of Your Kiss Is On My List and the catchiness of Private Eyes, those rank very high for me.
I still love Big Bam Boom. What a great album.
