Mark wrote this song after his tour bus traveled down the actual Telegraph Road, US Highway #23, that runs some 70 mikes along the border of Detroit. He and the tour bus driver had a long conversation about the rise and fall of a once great city. This song could describe any large city that has fallen into blight and decay.

I think everyone here is a star. They all go together and without overshadowing anyone. And best of all, they enjoy their work and infect you with their energy. There is not a single song on Alchemy that is not great. But telegraph road gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. The last part transports me to a highway at full speed.

Mark Knopfler is one of a kind, his clean tone is perfect. His finger picking technique allows him great phrases, syncopes, with a clockwork precision. And all that in a LIVE SESSION. IMO this live version of Telegraph road is his masterpiece. And an iconic piece of 80s rock music.

I applaud your way of responding to this spectacular performance with enthusiasm and appreciation for all the elements that make this so epic. You're right that the performers are at the top of their game, here with Mark and Terry Williams being the highlights, and that the song takes us on an epic journey with beautiful pacing and variety along the way. Mark plays with incredible clarity, melodic quality and creative flourishes. It's the kind of solo guitar playing that very few guitarists can do--where the playing is like a singing voice going through a range of expressions, rather than just doing some fast playing with no substance to it.

    • @setonhillstudios

It was a joy to watch you react to what is without doubt one of the best live performances EVER ! I was in a pub back in the day when I heard this sound come out of the Juke box - it blew me away ! It was Dire Straits who hit the ground running with Sultans of Swing. That was in 1978, and I don't think a day goes by that I don't listen to them. I'm now 77 years old. I was a teenager in the sixties which was the decade that ushered in the greatest music metamorphosis, and I got another crack at it tn the 70's with the phenomena that is Dire Straits !! - Keep em coming. Best wishes from across the Pond !

      @brianshickey 2 місяці тому +1

Very true! Terry’s best moments came on Sultans and Telegraph however as you pointed out, Alan is who truly shines during this performance. His tempo changes are beyond beautiful and his part in the crescendo is brilliant! He deserves far more praise.
Though John was the only active member from start to finish, Alan was very close in that I believe he only missed a year or so of not being an active member. He was that good and was the glue that kept the boys together.

Because it’s quite obvious you’re a musician and know your stuff, I love your analysis of the Dire Straits videos you’ve covered. You’re right in that bands from this era approached playing music live differently. Mark is an old soul and evokes emotion from his songs. This is his true gift. Yes, he’s an incredible guitar player but it takes a village and his band feeds off of one another, letting the music breathe with 10-15min songs. I often tear up watching Dire Straits live as they transcend beauty. This is the mark of musical genius and I really wish today’s bands had the courage to learn from the great bands of this era. Okay, enough from me.

I knew Dire Straits from before they hit the big time. They became and remain my favourite band. Not only is Knopfler one of the greatest guitar players of all time, but his writing is top notch. The poetry in some of the lines is extraordinary. "Running every red light on memory lane" is one that will always stick with me. Also, he was surrounded by class performers, from guitar, to keyboard, to drums. I was lucky enough to be at the Alchemy concert between deployments with the Royal Navy, and was actually present for the night they recorded Sultans. I recall feeling hollow, almost empty during the track, but by the end I was filled with such joy and appreciation.

Michigander here. I absolutely hate Telegraph Road, aka US Highway #23. I used to work in the Ford Headquarters building in Dearborn and I lived in Novi. They were doing construction on both I96 and I275 at the same time. I would have to go down Grand River to Telegraph and take it all the way down to Ford Rd. What a horrible drive. The traffic is so heavy and
stressful and it was depressing as well. Its never easy to see a once great city fall apart. I am so glad I do not have to deal with that drive anymore.

As I said after Sultans, I was there, at Hammersmith, the whole thing was brilliant, even at age 18, I knew how good it was.
This is such a complex piece that we didn't think they'd be able to play it live, how wrong you can be!
This was the encore, I don't know how they played like that for 2 hours or more.

New to your channel, but glad I found you! May I make a few suggestions for future Dire Straits reactions: The official video for ‘Money For Nothing’ from ‘Dire Straits (Live) - On The Night’ 1992, it’s one of the all-time best guitar riffs! Another mind-blowing (although more somber) track to check out is Brothers in Arms; I would suggest watching the official video first, and then checking out a live performance to appreciate Marks extended guitar solo improvs. I also really like the upbeat “Lady Writer”, which is a little shorter than some of their other tracks but very enjoyable, especially Mark’s signature style.

What I love about Dire Straits is not only their talent and ability to write and perform amazing tunes, its that they look like they are genuinely enjoying themselves on stage. As you said, they feed off each other and they also allow a moment for each member of the band to shine. They also feed off the audience with dips in the tempo that allows the enthusiasm of the audience to be heard.
The entire Alchemy Live concert is fire. Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing and Brothers in Arms really allows the band to bring everything they got to the table.
However, there is another song, which you may know and have most likely heard, at least in part, that is best to review using the official music video instead of the live versions. Walk of Life is a song that goes back to the days when Mark Knopfler was just starting out, playing music as a busker in the London subway system. If you listen to the lyrics, he lists out some of the songs he would play or he alludes to them ("the song about the knife" is in reference to Jack the Knife).
Not only does the video show the band playing a live performance of the song, it also uses sports bloopers to show you have to take your licks in life along with the high points.
Hence, the Walk of Life. Mark's brother is also in the band for this video (white suit, purple head scarf, no shoes). The band is having so much fun in the video. It makes you appreciate the music even more.
Warning: The music in Walk of Life is fresh and catchy and it will live in your head for a while. You may also find yourself belting out "Woooo-hoooo!" for no reason.

Telegraph Road is a significant 70-mile north-south route in Michigan. Mark Knopfler found inspiration for his song while traveling in the tour bus along Telegraph Road. Now at 80, I've witnessed numerous rock bands rise and fall, yet Dire Straits remains my unrivaled favorite Here, the absence of headbangers allows you to appreciate the music, which may sometimes be less than stellar. You're experiencing pure rock and roll, delivered by top-notch musicians. Dire Straits distinguished themselves from their contemporaries with their musical ethos; they played for mutual enjoyment, not just for fame or wealth.
