No gimmicks, no expensive show visual effects, no backing dancers, no lip syncing. Ladies and gentlemen, this is 110% talent.
No computers, no half dressed screaming woman.
So true, well said.
No fucking autotune.
And a self taught finger picker who is left handed but started to play right when his sister told him to when he was a kid
Only skill, decipline, LOVE and PASSION.
Knopfler's skill as a poet - telling a moving and thought-provoking story - is often missed. Yes... he's a masterful musician - but a great poet too.
Three guitar solos from the master.
Alchemy is sometimes called the greatest live album ever done.
Hard to argue against it.
And it is the best live album ever.
And one can see why right here !
Of course it is
I agree, absolutely
Telegraph Road Alchemy is the 9th symphony of the Rock and Roll. There isn't anything like that on the planet earth.
Agreed modern classical music
It's incredible I wouldn't have heard this but I met a girl who became my girlfriend she later became out as a lesbian I knew there was something different about her but she played this one night and omg it blew me away so I thank Michelle for the worst relationship of my life but the gift of dire straits ❤️
So what are the first 8 symphonies ? 🇬🇧 This is an absolute classic never to be matched !
Should have called the album Knopflers Ninth
Perfect comment
I am 89 and just came upon this whilst surfing. I would just like to say I wish to God I had had found it 45 years ago. Incredible talent. Not a weak link to be found.
the drummer is something 🥁🥁else ,piano yes guitar yes
They will be playing these performances one hundred, two hundred years from now. If you die and reincarnate many decades from now, you'll still find this music!
This song was inspired whilst Mark Knopfler was on a dIRE sTRAITS tour bus along Telegraph Road in the USA whilst also reading the book “Growth of the Soil” by Norwegian author Knut Hamsun when he wrote this song. Growth of the Soil is regarded as a historical classic. ... The novel exemplified Hamsun's aversion to modernity and inclination towards simplicity.
I feel this is the best ever piece of piano playing in a rock band. He just ties every other instrument together like a family and it's also such an important instrument in this song, if it wasn't used in this song this song would never be this epic. I've always considered Mark's guitar playing as the best in the world but Alan on the piano is brilliant. He used to play with Eric Clapton and is the only player in Clapton's band to ever leave on his own accord and he moved to Dire Straits and that says it all.
The Piano and Alan is as much of the star in this song as Mark and his guitar.
I also love the bass and the rhythm guitars as well but really love just how delicate Terry is on the drums when he's just tinkling the cymbals gently and Alan is gently doing the same on the high notes on the piano, so much power and so much delicate playing is just bloody awesome.
And at 56 years old I've loved this song for 40 years and my love for it gets better and stronger by the year.
Sometimes when I'm listening thru headphones I just tear up with happiness due to such beautiful music.
The main reason they're so bloody brilliant is because they're all happy smiling and jamming to something they love doing
Try to listen "By kind permission" from Jethro Tull
Ditto.
Я в свои 28 лет также как и ты плачу от радости, когда ночью перед сном в одиночестве в наушниках слушаю Dire Straits. Это алхимия для души
Loved your comment, says so much, so accurately! And, yes for the pianist to leave Clapton for Dire Straits is a story in itself!
I m exactly your age and i love them sane as you for sane period of time.I NEVER get tired of their pieces of arts and particularly of this song which i used to call it a symphony.Your comment truly inspires me.Thank you.
in the 80's I used to play guitar all the time 5 or 6 hours a day, my friend asked me if I wanted to go see Dire Straits... As you would expect I did, I think I have seen them at least twice live (in Australia). Pure, clean guitar, and the band is next level.
Mark Knopfler is a brilliant guitarist and a superb song writer - pure genius.
Truly a special talent. So unique. Dire straits live.. they slayed it!
and a Geordie to boot !
Lets not forget our gratitude for the internet, and UA-cam, and being able to watch their performances endlessly. You are, by far, my favourite reactors 💜. Thank you
Alchemy album is the best live album ever made in music , too much talents ans too much , i v never seen a live performance so clean like that
Talking Heads- Stop Making Sense is equally good and for a clean, live you need to go and see Steely Dan.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Telegraph Road isn't a song, it's an entire album. Best. Song. Ever.
It's a MOVIE!
Definitely one of my favourites
Agreed. Song never gets old for me. It really is a composition and transcends rock and roll to a lofty art! Such a gem .
And never forget, this is LIVE music, no autocorrection, just pure, raw talent.
I first heard this aged about 10. Even well over 30 years later I still get goosebumps. Absolutely incredible.
The Maestro Mark Knopfler and his Band , Dire Straits , at the HEIGHT of their Abilities . Incomparable .
For sure best live album of all time.
It's awesome to see your reactions. You have got to understand that when this LP, Love over Gold came out, in 1982, it knocked everyone of their chairs! I was 16 and I will never forget laying on the livingroom floor, reading the lyrics and listening, over and over again. Saw them live in 86 ❤ Do not forget Mark Knopfler as a storyteller. He always means every word he is singing and in every song, there is a story! Then and now! I love it, and I feel really lucky to have followed his music since -78. It's truly incredable. True love of music can never fade. Thank you Mark! No words are enough to describe this feeling of gratitude. ❤ 🎶🎸📚
Я завидую вам. Вам удалось побывать на концерте Dire Straits в самом разгаре их творчества. Это моя мечта
It floored me ...but it got no airplay
I've listened to Dire Straits almost every day for more than 40 years. Your reactions to them are what I feel inside practically every time I listen to them. It's great to see you sharing in their greatness.
👍👍
Same same. Im much younger but also a fan for almost two decades. I like to watch the reaction videos because it reminds me in my own feelings about this music. I've been 7 times in Mark's concerts. Epic stuff.
@@gasperek We have impeccable taste 🙂
Love Dire Straits...the guitar playing is just phenomenal
Simply... the best reaction of Thelegraph Road. Congrats bros.
Just solid blues/rock of the American South performed by a top tier British band in its prime.
Dire Straits - Best live band ever ! Mark Knofler not only that he is master on guitar, he also is master of writeing songs ! For me he is best guitar playr and there is one more, from Serbia, Kragujevac, Radomir Točak, band is called SMAK !
"all the birds up on the wires and up on the poles, they can always get out of this rain and this cold." ............wow!.....
I guess I'm very blessed to have seen them live once, in their Brothers in Arms concert in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
I truly believe that this song alone packs more emotions than all the FM music stations in America in a whole year in fact if I had to pick just one song as my all time favorite this would be it , despite I'm a big Pink Floyd fan!
My all time favorite too, listen to it every day🎸🎶😍
I have said this before but I can’t believe how they manage to convey SO much emotion with their music!
Alan Clark is my favourite keyobardist ever, he made me start learning piano
Yes exceptional
There can never be enough words to justify just how brilliant Dire Straits are.
Ive typed out 3 different messages here but like i said, its impossible to describe
My favourite band of all time
Dire Straits truly were a phenomenal band.
"Private Investigations" from their concert in Nimes, France in 1992 adds even more sounds, it'll blow you away.
The highest level of musical performance.
Terry Williams on drums Mark on guitar pure genius
They're gonna go insane...I'm preparing myself....Woooow!! You can take that to the bank!!!
Mark Knopfler has produced many movie soundtracks as well. He was Dire Straits
Jesus, that was INTENSE, gets me every time.
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are probably two of the VERY BEST guitarists of modern times, if not THE best. But their styles are quite different I think. Mark's fingers dance ACROSS the strings, whereas David's dance ALONG the strings. Both BRILLIANT, and capable of stirring your innermost soul.
Both Dire Steaits AND Pink Floyd are just beyond compare, both bands have BRILLIANT Drummers, Keyboard players, Bass players, AND guitarists.
Best two bands for me. Talent, style and between them, they have some of the best songs of all time.
I'm late finding this reaction. I'm not joking, I was there! (I'm a blob in the crowd on the inside of the album cover)
I was 18 years old and I went down there on the train with some fellow apprentices from work.
When they played this live, we couldn't believe it, it was better than the studio version.
It was an amazing concert, Telegraph road was the highlight.
Amazing!
Thanks for reacting to this and bringing back memories of when I had hair!
A mastercalss in dynamics....that´s Dire Straits for you...every.freaking.time.
The distinctive chikn pickn technique and tone of Mark Knopfler!!! 🎸🔥🔥🔥
Chicken pickin?! 😂 Sounds like something to do with Kentucky Fried Chicken. I think you mean finger picking I
That was a joy to watch this with you. You feel like I did over 40 years ago, watching it for the first time.
In a 1985 interview David Gilmour commented, “Mark Knopfler has a lovely, refreshing guitar style. He brought back something that seemed to have gone astray in guitar playing”. I worship the music of Mark Knopfler, with Dire Straits and now with his even longer solo career.
So nice to see you guys react just like I do. It brings me to tears often.
Now that is how you do rock n roll!! Defies adequate description. Thanks for sharing your reactions.
I've heard this song hundreds of times, and I feel the tears every single time !
He swapped guitars with his brother! WOW! way to show off how good he is.
Every time he gets those fingers going on that guitar the World pays attention...in anticipation of another masterpiece!
Saw them in Austin on this tour in ‘85. Best show I’ve ever seen, to this day.
private investigation - THE MASTERPIECE
It's absolutely crazy to think that when they produced the brothers in arms album one of the recording producers said Terry Williams drumming wasn't upto scratch and they had to redo the drumming with someone else,,,, WHAT 😮 how is that possible, Williams was an absolute machine 😯, you will never see a better drumming performance than that
A master class in rock showmanship.
This song is more than just a beautiful song, it is a history lesson and a look at the angst of youth in a town like the one that grew here. When I listen to it I feel it, I lived it. The "Bet on a race between the lights", the feeling of the need to escape and find a better place. I am older now, I made my escape, I found a better place, I made a life for us. But this song brings it all back, and I remember the places I escaped, the choices I made, the long years of hard work.
this band played rock and told stories like jazz players paint emotions
and by the way.... their studio albums did not do them justice
Thanks for this guys... I think it is important to keep in context that this performance was an encore after a 2-hour concert of their greatest and latest hits to that point. I think it was an incredible live performance the likes of which we don't see these days. The concert tours of the late 70s and early 80s were a high mark for live sound quality and polished musicianship. I fondly recall the days in high school '78-82 where the big thing to do was attend the rock concert that weekend and wear the T-Shirt to school on Monday. The shows were incredible live performances with the musicians playing and singing everything LIVE. It was just about the music... pure, raw, magical...
hey guys, these guys are all now in their late 60s! MK is now 72. And still the best. this was my generations music and on til this time and so happy you are finding these concerts
MK is simply the definition of cool.
They made music for all of us , for your too! ❤️
Goddamnit I love your twos passion for the phenomenon that is Dire Straits
The piano player is Alan Clarke. He eventually left the band to be Tina Turner's musical Director.
Incredible lyrics, telegraph road is a masterpiece of art and music.
18th birthday present was two tickets to see Dire Straits years ago. Mind blown then - STILL blown now (and I'm 54)
Mark is a natural left handed player, playing right-handed, when he ggot his first guitar, his Dad could only afford a right handed guitar.
We were spoiled with great music then, a fantastic period for us.❤️❤️❤️
Dude, it's Mark Knopfler. His music is everywhere. He really studied the blues and country music. In fact, if you wanna know which guitarist most influenced him, it would have to be Chet Atkins, who taught him to make his guitar talk.
Don't worry about broadcasting it, but you have to listen to their first three albums. The rest are amazing, but it will give you an idea of just how insanely mature Mark's compositions were from the very beginning. "Wild West End" from the first album is an absolute masterpiece. All of Communique will melt your brain. Then Making Movies, which features "Tunnel" and "Romeo and Juliette", which are iconic. Then move on to Brothers and Every Street and so on.
You guys will be amazed. Just drop a tab, find a beach and make a day of it. You will come out younger and filled with hope!
Somewhere on youtube is a video of the SkyArts docu Guitar Stories, which did an episode on Knopfler
Absolutely spot on man!
And Industrial Desease = 2 man say they're Jesus one of them must be wrong
You speak truths. I actually prefer the first three albums, with Pick Withers on drums. Like you said, 'Wild West End' is an absolute masterpiece. Also 'Six Blade Knife' imho.
I feel both Lucky and Sad. Lucky that I was born in 1961 and started going to concerts in 1973. I feel sad, that this music will never be created again. I feel my Youth has been regenerated, by you guys, listening and appreciating this era of great legendary music. I want to thank you 🙏 from my old Heart ❤️
1959 agrees with you! :)
So your mother drop you off at concert also.
@@carolrademacher7002 actually, my Brother was 16 and a guitar 🎸 player, so he took me to all the concerts in the early 70’s. Sometimes I went with boyfriend’s on dates.
1957 here. Will never hear a band like this again!
I was born i 1963, and i can only agree, we were lucky to grow up with bands like Dire Straits!
Each band member is incredible but as Dire Straits they are out of this world! ❤
I always say the same "Why does that guitar sound like that?", you can hear only two notes and you can say "that's Mark Knofler's guitar". Good reaction as always. :D
I worked all their shows (security) in London in '85 and the best one was the legendary hammersmith odeon concerts.
I'm in a few shots as i worked front of stage.
A privilege to be there.
Hammy Odeon , best gig house ever !! Like a second home to me in the late 70's 😊🙌🙌
@@tenchmagic i probably pushed you back into your seat row!
Late 70's?
Did you go to the Rainbow gigs?
Another massive high.
So many legendary gigs at that venue.
@@TheCornishCockney yeah , probably 😆 Lizzy , Rainbow , Blue Oyster Cult in 77. Rush , Lizzy , and so many more in 78. Sabbath with Van Halen in 79 was interesting 😆😆. Epic times mate 👍👍
Lucky you.
One of the greatest jams ever
THE Best band of all time. No more to say.
Thank you, guys. Great reaction to one of the best bands of all time! Period.
Dire Straits are masters of dynamics. Dynamics are how to change intensity and energy of music. It gives the music so much emotion and excitement.
Modern music has so short time on each song so much less space to change dynamics.
man these were the times. pure/raw talent. look optional. guys looking like they just came from a tennis practice and be like "ok lads lets get on stage and play something yeah?" . the crowd losing their shit. THIS IS MUSIC!
I"m wondering how on earth one can smash a thumb down button after hearing one of the world"s best rock ballads
Jealousy
thumb slipped!
I’m in my 70’s and a guitarist,we thank God we grew up in a magical time for music, bands like these still get me right inside ,wonderful,so glad you guys feel the effect now,🎸
I seriously doubt we will ever experience new music like this again. How sad if im right.
You are right for sure
Check out Tedeschi Trucks Band. Not quite as"epic," but equally as talented. Best touring band on the planet, imo.
Quite possibly the the most talented group of musicians to play in one band. I don't care where you look, guitar, keyboard, drums, Saxophone. Pure genius from a group that will never be matched live.
When i was 16 i passed on tickets to see them at the NEC in the UK touring Brothers in Arms. Biggest regret of my life.
Those goosebumps you both had ? A 15 year old schoolboy who bought this album as soon as it was released in 1983 can vividly remember having those same goosebumps listening to this same song. Crazy that 38 years later, I can still remember the experience.
Também, abraços!! 🇧🇷
Finally got around to watching this , brings back so many great memories . I saw this concert when they came to Vancouver , yes , I'm an old man . I saw the Brother's In Arms tour as well . Just a great band , so tight . Mark is their leader and it was an incredible show . As I've said before , I left that show with my ears ringing and I was a foot off the ground . It was so pure and I've been to many many concerts , Doobie Brother's , Elton John in '72 , Bruce Springsteen , Queen in '76 , Chicago in '77 and '79 and they were all great shows , but Dire Straits are the bomb , my favourite live band and my favourite band , enjoy the sound Mark creates , it's unique and in my opinion he is a guitar genius . Chris
If I was on my deathbed with one wish only that would be to go out listening to this version. I'd go a happy man.
Thank you for a great reaction I love watching you both. I am a child of the 50's so I have had the privilege of seeing this incredible band several times at their very best. My boyfriend at the time and myself we came away from this concert on such a high we didn't come down for days. Fantastic wonderful does not begin to describe it, so talented all of them. I was a little in love with Mark and certainly John Illsley on bass....🥰🥰💗🎸🎸
Thankyou for a brilliant reaction 👍🇬🇧
I agree with you both. There will always be great music across the world because artists rule!
Alcamy is the greatest live album ever made in my opinion! Mark knofler is a f##ing legend!!!
Dire Straits. The greatest Rock and Roll orchestra ! Terry Williams is one of the best rock drummers I've ever heard!
I've said this so many times, better time keeping than Rolex
@@leeharvey876 Phil Rudd is another who is a human metronome. Sure he doesn't play the big runs etc the way Terry (and others) do, but he can hold a beat like few others and combined with Malcolm and Cliff provided one of the best and most solid 'rhythm sections' around for Angus and Brian/Bon to do what they do/did best. Now Malcolm (RIP) was someone who was under-rated as a guitarist IMHO!
Original drummer Pick Withers was great as well
Terry terrorizes the drums on sultan's of swing. If you watch carefully during the alchemy performance you could even at one point see Mark and John turn back to Terry and smile surprized .I'm sure he did something out of script
JUST FLIPPING BRILLIANT
@Dino Govender - I felt sorry for those drums!
I never believed in reincarnation until I seen that performance....those drums are definitely Adolf reincarnated and Terry brutalised him for all the naughty things he done 😂
One of my favourite pieces of music of all time ❤️
They are making me happy every day. After wards I always habe the feeling to hug some one. Even a stranger. It makes me smile more often. Also to strangers. Thank you DS.
Hi guys. I was there at the concert that is in the video, so many years ago now but still so memorable. It is great watching it on UA-cam and even better seeing your reaction
You should give a listen/reaction to Romeo & Juliet and Tunnel of Love!
Tunnel of Love, fantastic, Romeo and Juliet 👎
This has to up their with the greatest piece of work ever done never gets old love it
As much as its the guitar whats missing in music now is beautiful stories in the song. Mark has always been amazing for the unique lyrics.
my vote for best Dire Straits song, honestly
Dire Straits....one of those bands and singers you recognize from the first notes, from the sound of his voice. Distinctive instruments, distinctive sound to his voice. They are awesome!! Thanks Dudes! ❤️
Big Dire Straits fan here and I gotta say it's very cool seeing the honest appreciation you guys show in these vids. Can tell you appreciate the musical talent on display by each of these musicians. It really is amazing how they managed to put together these amazingly layered compositions with space for all the different instruments to shine. And on top of that, they would never play the songs exactly the same way! Knopfler was constantly improvising and coming up with such amazing guitar licks on the fly. Dude is a freaking guitar god!
Really cool channel and reactions, guys. Liked and Subbed
This version of Telegraph road was and still is so important in my life. It has helped me through bad and good times just by listening to it. In 1991 I was lucky enough to see them live and they played almost all the tracks of the Alchemy album in a phenomenal way. You should also check out "you and your friend" ua-cam.com/video/ILRCfeITBns/v-deo.html
Great to see Alan Clark getting the props he deserves!!......longest standing member behind Knopfler and Illsley....and key to their sound
Big shout out to Guy Fletcher who arrived soon after and is still in Marks solo band to this very day. Can't wait for Marks next solo album due out in 2023 at 73 years old. God bless him 😊
@@MinistryOfDarkness11 Guy Fletcher,is absolutely brilliant.I saw the band twice,on their Love Over Gold tour,at Hammersmith Odeon, and Wembley Arena. Also saw Mark with the Notting Hillbillies,at the Leas Cliff Hall. Was standing about ten feet away from him, mesmerized by his playing.
I bet there are thousands of us who would sell their soul to see Mark and David play on the same stage.
Dire Straits my all time favorite band they were so underrated that is a shame
